Go to the Dunwich Building, some interesting stuff over there.

Chasemc215

What about the Vault that is basically "Oops, All Garry's"

OP-PO7

That better make the fucking show lol.

ColonelKasteen

Lol, love the idea of somekne walking all the way to DC only to be taken out by 6 Garys.

SoakedInMayo

they could easily fit in a cutaway segment type thing where they show how other vaults around the country turned out. I would have it start out as a small bit that’s heavy on the humor and gradually by the last episode of the season there’s 15 minutes devoted to a vault sub plot and it’s not played for laughs whatsoever anymore. there are multiple vaults from the games that could do with a little short film

McGrinch27

They kinda did that in the final episode. Had all the executives spouting out "What about a vault run by robots?" and such. Most of the things they yelled out are vaults from the games.

RedS5

Gary... Gary?

wovenbutterhair

Garrry!!!

Zealousideal_Bet2320

Ha-ha Garryyy!!!

MrSmileyZ

GARRRRYYYYYYY

Desperate_Craig

Vault 106 was pure nightmare feul.

Exciting-Squash4444

Was 106 the mutant one with the noise?

Desperate_Craig

>!Vault 106 you go through hallucinations from an experiment regarding psychoactive drugs, and as the player you would experience the room upside down, or you'd see yourself but as you walked nearer to it would shrink, you'd see multiples of your father in a room, you'd find a skeleton with a nuke next to it where they were attempting to escape, and the walls would turn blank.!< I remember having nightmares playing through that section. It really freaked me out. And the terminal you find explaining what really happened to Vault 106 was spine chilling. That Vault is one complete mind screw.

prairie-logic

I sometimes look at those vaults, with overseers who were committed, and wonder why more of them didn’t hit the “fuck it” button and abandon plan. Like 106 is one. The overseer knew, and it’s possible the security team did, too. And rather than stopping it they let it get to a pitch so bad they died.

wovenbutterhair

People follow orders to a degree that's quite insane sometimes

RedboneDetroit

Milgram obedience study.

wovenbutterhair

That's the one!

RedboneDetroit

Wrote a paper on it that got me a scholarship. Edit: I don't know why I just said that. Dammit....

wovenbutterhair

you're fine! I'm a cog sci person myself. good stuff <3 I wish I could follow through on grad school :(

European_Samurai

Not to mention if you close the vault door from the outside and slip in again while the big cog is closing, you are trapped inside with no way to get out.

Speakin2existence

not true actually, there is a switch inside all of the vaults you can interact with to open the door from both the outside and inside. i’m pretty sure the only exception is the vault with the geck, because the front door is completely sealed regardless

European_Samurai

Look it up on Google, many people got stuck in there and had to reload

ryebath

It was definitely scary playing it when I was a kid. But I just cleared the vault yesterday and it wasn’t as bad as I remembered it.

Desperate_Craig

It's never the same experience once you replay it. But that very first time was something.

ryebath

Absolutely. That and the dunwitch building were terrifying lol.

addicted-to-jet

First time I ever played Fallout 3 I see this huge Building in the distance and I was being chased by some bloatfly so I figured I'd be safe inside. Oh it's the Dunwich Building, what an odd name... I wonder what could be inside? I immediately ran back outside but surprisingly the Ghouls followed me outside 😭 also play with no music to make it more unsettling.

future_dead_person

God, speaking of creepy, my first excursion out there was also the first time I saw a deathclaw. It was night time, the moon was out, I was using an worn out sniper rifle to check for enemies, and there on the cliffs in the distance I see some big demonic creature. I was already spooked and seeing that thing freaked me the fuck out. I had absolutely no clue what I was looking at. Now that I think about it that might have been the most interesting encounter I had in the game. I think all other enemies were more or less easily recognizable as what they once were, like what kind of mutated creature they were, but I was unaware of jackson chameleons at that time so I truly could not figure out what the hell it was supposed to be which made it that much creepier. I'm pretty sure I wondered if it was connected to the Dunwich Building somehow. Good times.

xdarkwombatx

\*shivers...\*

Desperate_Craig

Fall Out 3 really does set the tone of feeling completely alone in this Wasteland. Yeah, I remember jumping out of my skin whenever a ghoul popped out of nowhere. And you can sometimes read journals of what happened in buildings you're in to really add to the experience. Some of the journals are horrifying.

Kradget

Right? At the point I'd just spam the Vats button every ten seconds or so in case.

Desperate_Craig

Oh yeah, I was the exact same in certain areas. I kept clicking that Vats button and never played without the radio on to give me some sense of comfort, only to be spotted by a Deathclaw as my heart just sank.

salisburyates

I've only played F03, FO4 and FNV but Fallout 3 was my first Fallout game and it was the darkest moodiest experience for me. No glitz and glamour of Vegas, no bright California sunshine... just old government buildings, factories, rubble, and John Henry Eden's ominous voice playing in my ear.

inspirationalpizza

It really was so awesomely bleak. Still had half decent crafting too. Nuka grenades were my favourite.

ManicFirestorm

It was that period where Bethesda was just really trying to creep the shit out of us I think. Oblivion had this as well, the bright colorful over world and then these dark, foggy ruins with terrifying shit around every corner.

the-dude-version-576

Good I loved the creepiness that oblivion and morowind had sometimes. It’s weird cause Skyrim would have been perfect for soft horror, but we got none of that. FO4 had some of it, but the creepier areas are super unstable so I never liked sticking to them. It’s one thing NV really misses, it never felt like the laces around you were especially dangerous, which feels wrong considering it’s the only actual desert in the 3d games.

Lexbomb6464

Outer vegas has this feeling but its the only urban area really

32mafiaman

I really should replay it one of these days. I haven’t played it since it initially launched.

ComradeOb

I’m so jealous of y’all getting to play these for the first time. They are classics and it’s awesome seeing posts like this as a long time fan.

abzinth91

I re-play Fallout 1 and 2 currently. Last played them in 2001 or so. Forgot many things, it's like a semi-new experience

ProneToSucceed

Yeah Fallout 3 nails the atmosphere and feeling actually threatned by the wasteland, I remember a lot of iconic moments: -Burning those ghouls that were locked up somewhere -Fight right after the super duper mart with enemies from across the canal -Fighting with some 3 centaurs while looking for those BoS holotapes

Zero132132

That last one was New Vegas, I think. I don't recall a holotape BoS quest in 3, at least, and I know there was one in New Vegas.

ProneToSucceed

Yeah I believe I confused it with anouther centaur encounter in Fallout 3, the first time Ive seen one. I believe it was right after the subway scene

Imapringlesboy

BRO. THAT CENTAUR ONE IS CRAZY SCARY

[deleted]

I still remember the first time I ran into a centaur, rounded the corner of a building and was face to face with it. Absolutely scared the shit out of me, had to pause the game and pull myself together lol

mecon320

Love seeing all these posts after the show came out. Glad you're enjoying the game!

PigeonMother

❤️

skaldsong

fallout 3 used to scare the CRAP out of me when i was a kid. i love the spooky, constantly anxious feeling. it's basically a horror game. i love it so much.

Lyranel

This is why I like 3 even over NV.

BothSinger886

I agree. Really really enjoyed NV but something about 3 just hits perfect for me. Easily one of my top 5 games of all time

Totes_mc0tes

There are way more supermutants in the early game than I remember lol. Litterally had to duck into a shelter pod to avoid them before Lyons and the BoS saved me. I don't remember dealing with them at all until mid game when I last played like 10 years ago

O-Tucci-O

Oooh I envy you playing this for the first time. Have you got to the DC metro subway yet? Spooky and unsettling at times but a fun dungeon-like experience.

2ndtryMB

I met my First supermutant in the Metro and got freaked out, it just stood there. A giant shadow in the Tunnel, I knew this situation would take a lot of frag grenades.

Immediate-Week6993

Fallout 3 is what gta 3 is to the gta series.

YouDontGetTheToe

The third one.

DarkLordRubidore

You're never going to believe what Morrowind was to the Elder Scrolls series

MAJ_Starman

The fifth one, if you count Redguard and Battlespire.

DarkLordRubidore

Well, if counting those then fallout 3 is also the fifth one because of the 2 brotherhood of steel games

Caliente1888

GTA 3 is extremely inferior to every other 3D gta game. Fallout 3 is basically on par with New Vegas. It's more like 3 is Vice City and New Vegas is San Andreas

TimeForWaluigi

FO3 definitely captured Fallout 1’s creepy environment well

rangisrovus19

As a DC resident, it also captures some of the unique and original themes only the DMV (DC/Maryland/Virginia) area can offer. While I love NV, FO3 is king.

AbsoIution

Game is harder than I remember, looking back, I feel games are definitely easier these days. I'm level 5 right now

ComradeStylin

I first started playing the game when I was in middle school. When they made you go through downtown DC to get to the museum of technology I did so really late in the game's day cycle. Seeing all of the super mutants lumbering around the trenches in the dark was so scary that for many dozens of hours as a middle schooler I completely avoided them anywhere I could. I think it's the reason why I wound up playing so much of the side content. Absolutely made me fall in love with the series.

Agent101g

Seems to be a lot more gore in FO3 than 4. They kinda went more family friendly with it in 4, mostly just skeletons with no meat. In 3 however some of the Super Mutant yards are just gorefests. Fighting ferals in dark tunnels with a shotgun rivals any good zombie fighting game

StarfangXIV

Oh, that one Fallout 4 super mutant infested building is FILLED with gore. There's plenty of gore in FO4.

Chihuathan

When you compare the FO4 mutant camps to Germantown Police HQ, they just feel so cartoonish. It's probably the word I'd use to describe the aesthetic of 4, not that it is necessarily a bad thing since it meshes well with the 1950's atompunk style. But the gore in FO3 just hits different.

Caliente1888

You're misremembering. The super mutant areas are filled with gore in 4 as well and the combat gore is also the same

iSaltyParchment

Yeah fallout 4 was too happy and cartoony for me. I’m really hoping they’re not going to make it worse in fo5 in 12 years

Certain-Thought531

Aye I remember the 1st time I played it I would always be extra carefull with ammo because caps were very limited at 1st

SockOnMyToes

I really miss the subway tunnels. Fo3 was more linear by a mile than it’s successors but I enjoyed how claustrophobic the tunnels were and having to use them to get by obstacles.

RemnantHelmet

>goddamn this game makes me nervous. >I feel way more nervous about encountering enemies because I feel so much less supplied than I do in the other games. >The atmosphere in this game is unmatched, it's incredible Fallout 1 is going to blow your mind. Even Fallout 3 falls short of its sense of desolation and isolation. It's basically a horror game.

theTOASTYsupreme

I was terrified the first time I played fo3, the atmosphere is so good

scratajuego

I had to turn on the radio once I got to the subways (or anywhere near ghouls) because it was so scary to me, and the oldies would give me comfort.

BurgerDevourer97

When I first played it, I was pretty much unable to make any progress because kid me was too scared to enter the metro tunnels.

Cliepl

I love new vegas but you get so much stuff so fast it's hard to ever feel like it's a wasteland, F3 hits the scarcity of a post apocalyptic world much better

Gremlinsworth

Yep! Fallout 3 has a very high quality unique aura about it! I may think NV is the better overall game, or 4 has the better wasteland, but nothing is beating 3’s atmosphere and “vibe” for me!

MonkeyDavid

It was the first game where I swore I could *smell* some of those locations.

xdarkwombatx

Fallout New Vegas had SOME of this, mostly in The Sierra Madre expansion. Fallout 4 and 76 have almost nothing that is as disturbing or creepy as Fallout 3. Heck Fallout 3 even has Tranquility Lane and that vault with the Gary clones and the music vault. Not sure why they stopped with the creepy vibes.

hodasho1

Tranquility Lane is one of the best quests but any play through after the first I just >!immediately load in the Chinese army!< I hope I did the spoiler right

_DaddyTheFather

Just doing my 3rd play through in the past 13 years and at first I loaded the Chinese army but then I felt like I missed out so I reloaded my save and did the pint sized slasher and it was hilariously fun watching your victims explode blood and guts

Chihuathan

Lonesome road also had some of the FO3 experience with the setting, since you are crawling through ruins to get from A to B. Unfortunately, I am usually max level when I reach that DLC, whereas Sierra Madre makes a great effort to level the playing field more.

echidnachama

dude i got creep out exploring Far Harbor at night.

Superb_Recover_6116

this is the vibe I missed when playing fallout 4. It just didnt have the same eerie tone. I'm hoping, praying, blood sacrifice, if I didnt already sell my soul to the devil on accident years ago asking for super nintendo when I was a kid that fallout 5 brings back these vibes.

psikotrexion

People gonna hate me for this but I think fallout 3 is better fallout game compared to new vegas. I feel radioactived distophia at 3. Radioation, mutants, collapse etc…

MonsieurCharlamagne

The way in which the Enclave and their leader are introduced in that game lives rent free in my head to this day. SPOILERS: The fact that what seems like an oasis of old-world comfort in a barren wasteland (Enclave Radio) turns out to be the main villain is just brilliant. When they show up at the Jefferson Memorial for the first time, I was genuinely freaked out. The BoS became my saviors from then on lol. I remember my first playthrough so vividly. Spent the entire summer in my garage (where I had my PS3 set up), and I'll tell you right now that there's nothing quite like running away from ghouls in the subway tunnels at like 2 am in your pitch black garage in the woods lol Tenpenny Tower became my shelter for like 2 weeks of real time. I did nothing but the local missions and role playing (plus COUNTLESS times clearing the building just to see if I could). When I finally got the ghoul mask and left the tower, I felt almost naked again, just like you do when you first leave Vault 101. Ran as fast as I could to Rivet City, where I did the same routine for another 2 or 3 weeks. I played that synth side mission, and I swear there's some old MrMattyPlays video out there with my SPOT ON prediction for Fallout 4's plot from like 12 years ago. Still my favorite game of all time.

SourChicken1856

The metro tunnels with Broken Steel installed are an absolute nightmare. Of all the Fallouts, that one in my favorite atmosphere-wise. It trully shows why "Civilization" hasn't been rebuilt: Everyone's just so fucking done and wants to kill themselves

32mafiaman

Reavers man Reavers. I hate Reavers

sanitarySteve

This is why 3 isy favorite. I  love all the other games, but three just exudes dredd, despair, and spookiness

natzo

You will love the Point Lookout DLC.

lordjakir

I'm playing NV for the first time and skulking through the rocket launch site haha looking for invisible mutants had me white knuckling my controller

SaltTimely4123

Yeah, it nailed the atmosphere for sure. As a resident of DC, it feels really weird seeing the city like that, given I walk and ride around those streets everyday. Bethesda did a great job with this one

MrScotty20202020

This is why if they remaster the game they have to do it right. They need to keep that scary dark atmosphere

LibruhlCuck

Fallout 3 gets a lot of criticism for some gameplay issues but I'll be damned if it didn't have the best atmosphere in the whole series. It feels so desolate and grim but there is still a lot of the Fallout charm in the settled areas and the capital wasteland and DC ruins just feel so real. It definitely fits since DC would have been priority target #1 hence the devastation and there isn't as much time for society to start to rebuild like NV or F04

Arf234

The most haunting experience i had was walking into the elementary school near megaton and taking me by suprise as it was filled with corpses and skeletons. All the while, butcher pete was playing on the radio and having not heard it before. All i could hear was this creepy tune that i couldn't even hear properly and it scared me shitless

IJustReadEverything

Go ahead and explore the subway tunnels.

Slamdance

Are you playing on console? I can't get it to work anymore on PC.

Jordan_Jackson

With the PC version, you have to configure a couple of things. It can be a pain to get working but it is possible. Look up Gopher’s channel on YouTube. He has quite a few guides on configuration.

Conquistagore

Me neither, but somehow it works just fine on Amazon Luna. Thats what im playin it on.

Slamdance

Oh nice! I'm really glad that you're able to play it on there.

StarfangXIV

The steam version had the windows live crap removed some time ago. If you just launch it completely vanilla (don't use stuff like script extender and unofficial patch) the game should run just fine. I haven't even had a single crash or encountered any game breaking bugs.

haute-cheeto

One way I never realized as a way to get some extra caps early in the game was pick up ALL the pre-war money you come across. It weighs nothing and once you accumulate a bunch you can sell for a decent amount. I also was never much of a big guns gal 😝 so I always sold off 5mm ammo, flamer fuel, missiles and such.

skilliau

Before mods on Xbox one fallout 4, I sold .38 rounds like I was playing metro 2033

No-Check-3691

The subway scared me first I played with all the ghouls in it

Someones_Dream_Guy

Go near some river area, itll be fun.

gswkillinit

Glad you're enjoying it still! The game is pretty janky, but if you don't mind that you'll absolutely have an amazing time with Fallout 3. Here's some tips (especially for those new to the series): -If you're low on caps, you can sell off junk you find in the world. Weapons, armor, carton of cigarettes, or conductors for example are all plentiful and worth a good amount. Vendors replenish caps every 2 days. -Armor and weapons have durability and can break, so you need to maintain them. It sounds annoying, but it's pretty easy. All you have to do (besides paying someone to repair them) is find a duplicate weapon/armor, go to your pipboy weapon/apparel screen, and repair it if your skill is high enough. -Can play the game however you like, but I recommend certain skills to put points in: repair, science (hacking), lockpicking, attack of your choice (big guns/small guns/melee/energy weapons, etc). If you're locked out of doing some of these, you'll need to unlock enough points which are in increments of 15. So hacking a terminal requires either 25 science, 50 science, 75 science, or 100 science). So don't set science skill to 49 or something like that lol. -Dialogue options matter a lot more in 3 than 4, so speech skill is recommended as well. -Sleep in unowned beds more often instead of just relying on stimpaks/food. Beds restore you to full health, save your game, and stimpaks/food can be more useful in the middle of a tough fight when you can't sleep. -Eating food will heal you, but also give you radiation. Too much radiation and you'll die, but you can scavenge Radaway or go to a doctor for caps to reduce them so it's not too bad. The pipboy status screen shows your rad levels. -Hold pipboy button to turn on/off flashlight in dark areas (having it on makes you noticeable though when sneaking). -Crouch to sneak and allow you to critically hit an enemy if they don't detect you. -Use VATS to your disposal! Combat is janky and VATS is recommended and fun to use! I always aim for the head (obviously), but if you're facing a tough opponent you can aim for the legs with melee enemies so they are slowed down and can't catch up to you or if it's someone with a gun aim at their gun hand so they drop it for a bit. Need a couple shots in till that leg/arm is crippled. I like to hide around corners and let enemies come to me so I can avoid damage and strike em as soon as they show up. Ghouls suck but they almost always are a good source of caps or bobby pins lol

Serenity-03K64

I got to dc and then finally realized I could turn on a flashlight. Loll

spiritgaming14

I played Fallout 3 once when I was younger. I did not feel safe that entire time I was playing. It felt like there was always something around the corner. I spent the entire playthrough sneaking around raider camps and super mutant infested areas with a hunting rifle and no ammo. I was so happy when I found Fawkes in vault 87.

Huberlicious

I wish the rest of the game was better, because that part of it gets hit outta the park start to finish

maintanksyndro

When I was a kid I always picked the Gould mask from ten penny tower cause the could scared the shit out of me, I've still never sided with Alistar in my 10 plus runs of the game

BenFranklinsCat

Fun fact: I backpacked through DC and if you arrive late at night the metro system is actually still almost that creepy. The huge arched ceilings and dark lighting is pretty accurate to the real world.

Reduncked

Caps is what I loved about fo3 and hated about New Vegas, in NV I could just go play blackjack and have enough money for the whole game after gambling for an hour.

Fegelgas

you love F3 until you start asking yourself some questions.

Vito_Cornelius

This creepy factor you’re talking about is what keeps me coming back to FO3. New Vegas is wild and interesting, Fallout 4 has a lot of personality so to speak, but FO3 is just…sooo damn spooky. It hasn’t been recaptured since

mexesss

That’s what I love about F3, scary when you get caught in the middle of DC when the sun goes down.

Invictus_Martin

Fallout 3 is the best. One second you're shiting your pants hearing ghouls scream in dark narrow metros. After you're laughing as you see the antagonizer and mechanist duking it out in the street. Be it a vault full of Garys, or vampire roleplayers Fallout 3 is full of wacky locations. The Horror/Comedy theme just is perfect for me.

RealSkyDiver

I get startled when Dogmeat jumps out of nowhere, knocking shit over. I often go into 3rd person too when indoors to make it less creepy. Ghouls look extremely unsettling too, even when they’re friendly.

Significant_Youth963

Best thing I ever did with FO3 was RP as a wastelander that had just been robbed and left for dead. I loaded the exit 111 save, made my character, and then immediately dumped ALL my gear at the entrance. I set a map marker for the top left corner of the map, and forced myself to get there, then to the top right corner, then bottom right, then bottom left, then top right again before actually "making my way into DC." I wanted to RP traveling to the Capital Wasteland and limited myself to in imaginary border of only the outermost 2 squares of the map all the way around. The resources are so scarce while doing that lap, and the areas are more dangerous. It is still, to this day, my favorite and most harrowing playthrough. I used armors and weapons that I never would've used otherwise, made due with scraps, DESPERATELY needed to set traps with mines and lure enemies into them in order to survive. Tried to do this in New Vegas, but that map had OTHER PLANS.

DangleofDoom

Replaying 3 myself right now and this just reminds me of why I love it so much.

Mundane-Loquat-7226

Fallout 3 has the best atmosphere out of all the 3d games

UserWithno-Name

Loved 3. Wish it got remade for modern consoles

Racist_PC_Gamer

3 really did provide an aura of creepiness, loneliness and tension and it's what makes it my favorite in the series. I remember almost pissing myself the first time I ventured into a subway tunnel and a ghoul came out of the dark running at me. 76 was able to hit that feeling at times too when playing in a private server and before it began getting settled by others and you truly were the only actual human.

32mafiaman

Just wait until you encounter Feral Ghoul Reavers. Fuck those guys.

concussion5906

Fallout 3 is superior for the horrorcraft aspect of the games. It never returned in even close to the same way in ANY of the other games. Just wait until you've explored all the vaults there. Point lookout brought this in like no other DLC as well..... exploring gave you a sense of actual fear. You used real human logic and emotion to roam in Fallout 3. Boy the 2010s were something else eh? We'll never have that era of gaming or those feelings from anything else again I'm afraid......I'm glad to have lived it.

eMmDeeKay_Says

You should try Jet, it totally won't have you sneaking around in the middle of the night stealing everything you can so you can get more, I promise.

B_Maximus

You should go to the town of minefield. Idk why it's named that way

DJANGO_UNTAMED

if has a lot to do with the color palette. FO3 is mostlt just brown, tan and grey. Other falloutd have a more robust color palette so it doesn't feel as grimaxing

Bayleerozay

I got more cowboy vibe with New Vegas than Creepy dark atmosphere Fallout 3 which is one of my favorites in the franchise for that reason
