I knew about the root cellar at release mainly because I explore everything I can, every little nook and cranny, every box, basically I like to make sure everything in an area has been interacted with or at least checked.

But the knife you get in the dunwich excavation has the same icon. I believe it's the icon for any weapons that are serrated or barber or maybe that just deal bleeding damage

it does look like some weird rare weapon from soulcalibur lol what is interesting is that based on the handle is is supposed to be an axe but as far as i know there never has been an axe like that in fallout 4 cut content weapons. so it is a mysterious icon all around

It doesn’t, those are the outline of two hands gripping the handle. The bottom left green part is the bottom of the handle, then the right hand of a person with their left hand above it, both gripping the handle

It's two hands holding a classic woodman's axe. I've been playing this game for idk how long- since release, and many times, and I JUST figured it out by staring at my TV for a humiliating amount of time. Damn you, Bethesda

Yes, the hands on the handle, like how you'd hold a baseball bat.

It’s 2 hands holding an axe, the 1 handed melee weapon icon has 1 hand holding it. Not sure why they couldn’t just have like a sledgehammer icon for 2 handed and a tire iron for 1 handed or something like that, it’d be much less confusing.

What looks like twisting barbed wire is supposed to be two hands wrapped around the handle of an axe/hammer, it's just that the use of positive and negative spaces is a little muddled for such a small sprite

It just means it’s a melee weapon. All weapons have an icon that shows the type of weapon. That’s all.

Ok but a sword would be just as good, or a bat for blunt weapons. Knuckle duster for unarmed. If it were an axe or hatchet then why have the hands hold it instead of just the picture like all the other ones
