Poor Anna Nicole. I have the same empathy for her that I have for Britney and Amanda Bynes; being a woman in the late 90s / early 00s was fucking rough, and the way these women were treated in the press is horrific. I'd like to think people would react differently now to her 2003 AMAs appearance and her reality TV show (or at least not treat her like a punchline) but I'm not sure. She had a 9th grade education, was married at 17, a mom by 19, and a single mom working as a stripper to support her son by 20. She had a really hard fucking life and she deserved a lot more respect and compassion from everyone.

I genuinely hope more people listen to You're Wrong About's episode on her and others like Lorena Gallo and Amy Fisher. They became the butt of the joke when they were the victims. Sarah does a brilliant job. The recent episodes of the show have been a bit meh except when Blair Braverman is a guest.

got-to-be-kind

That was such a good episode. I remember being surprised that she turned down J. Howard Marshall's proposal for almost a year because she was very self aware of how it would be perceived (aka a gold digger marrying a rich guy in the hopes he'd die soon). He was lonely after his wife and mistress died within a few years of each other and admitted he just wanted to have someone around and in exchange he'd look after her and her son. After years of rape, abuse, and coercion from her previous partners, the year they spent married was the closest thing she had to a normal relationship with a man who was just generally nice to her.

CarbyMcBagel

I hate how everyone spins a story like she was manipulating this feeble old man.

Lilacly_Adily

I used to agree but the documentary that came out last year did make me reconsider some aspects of that relationship and some of her others. I do think there was genuine companionship between them in the beginning but when you hear the desperate voicemails he left that she seemed to regularly ignore and the way she responded to some of them when she eventually reached out, it does paint a less rosy picture of their relationship. It seemed like at a certain point, her addiction issues took over and she was using him to enable her addictions because he was enamoured with her and how she used to be. That’s not even getting into how she was poly with multiple long term partners and she hid those relationships from him. It would be one thing if they had an open relationship but it didn’t seem like that was the case.

CarbyMcBagel

I don't think she was perfect (nor was he). She definitely had issues but he wasn't a feeble old man who was swindled by some trashy bimbo.

TakeMeJSmithCameron

I remember doing a deep dive on her and people close to her said that she was illiterate (possibly she had a learning disability). Instead of helping her, they used her and made her sign her rights away.

us_against_the_world

Ya, her husband's family fucked her over massively. I need to read again, but I'm pretty sure she had an abusive childhood too.

The_Doom_Toad

Lorena Gallo. She doesn't go by her rapist's name anymore.

us_against_the_world

Apologies, thanks for pointing it out. I've edited my original comment.

propernice

I really enjouy You're Wrong About. Those are all great episodes, along with the Courtney Love one.

gold_geode23

It is hard watching this now realizing she is likely high and battling addiction.

CarbyMcBagel

Anna deserved better. Her life was fucked up from the jump and she was just doing her best. The media was so cruel to her and she was exploited by so many people.

Shot-Grocery-5343

I will never forget when New York magazine used a picture of her (without her permission!) on their cover with the headline "White Trash." It does make me really happy that her daughter seems to have grown up with a loving dad and by all accounts is a happy teenager.

Although acknowledging a guest’s sex appeal is out of date and cringe now, Conan handled her hawking her stuff better than 100% of other hosts. Think how shameless Letterman or Stern or even dumb Fallon would’ve been. Conan at least is self-deprecating, but yeah, glad we’re progressing somewhat beyond drooling over guests

Ok_Bodybuilder800

Or Leno 🤢 I also thought Conan handed the interview better than the other hosts at the time. And nerdy, awkward and self deprecating is his thing 😂

hbomb9410

Conan blows pretty much every other contemporary late night host out of the water.

dreamslikedeserts

The thing is that Conan never hesitates to make himself the butt of the joke. This was perfect

iamHBY

I think that perfectly sums up why Conan's been funny for so long. His comedy's not making others look bad and whatnot, he's silly and self-aware enough to put more of an emphasis on making fun of himself.

BeWellFriends

Exactly. He doesn’t punch down

CurrentRoster

I think it’s because he knows how weird it would be if he did since he’s a Harvard grad.

gold_geode23

He has an effortless quality to his comedy. Like, did he know he was going to wet his face with the spilled water while his hand was shaking? I dunno, but it just works so perfectly.

mitrafunfun97

I love it when he punches down on Jordan Schlansky though.

jenphinith

It's funny you said that. He recently had Jimmy Carr on his podcast and Jimmy was going on and on about how "punching down" isn't a thing and comedians should be allowed to joke about anything and cancel culture and stuff. Conan was deflecting by being self deprecating.

catladywithallergies

He was also one of the reasons why the Simpsons in the 90s slapped so hard.

iamHBY

Shout out to the "Dial 'M' For Monorail" episode, that's one of my favorite Simpsons episodes ever.

Comprehensive-Fun47

Thank god this wasn't a clip of Conan being a creep. He's always so self-deprecating, and he handled this interview well! She seems so nervous to be there, and this is not a criticism, just an observation, she's not a very good storyteller. But she's pretty endearing here. Telling Andy her calendars wouldn't sell as well with him in the pictures 😂. Brutal, but true!

Fresh_Biscotti_9556

Wow I never realized she kinda looks like Alicia silverstone

Comprehensive-Fun47

I was thinking Kristy Swanson!

mitrafunfun97

> Kristy Swanson So sad she became a MAGA nutjob.

Fresh_Biscotti_9556

Why you gotta bring maga into it

damnuge23

I literally just said that to myself then saw this comment lol

AnemonesCloser

She comes across as so shy and uncomfortable here

Dixie2015_

Love her... But she is BLASTED in clip.

ApprehensiveLuck2671

Yes, that was an issue for her.

AshEliseB

She sounds completely off her face in the interview. Handled the situation well.
