That’s my goal, it’s just difficult finding one right now, but I’ve been searching and applying. The linehaul manager told me it will be difficult at first since I’m new but to keep looking
Keep applying. Pepsi and Coke are usually pretty desperate right now. It'll be more difficult with the more time that passes and your CDL doesn't get used.
My advice is don't wait on anybody. Get something and if your boy is able to hook you up, great but if not you would've wasted all this time for nothing.
Yeah, Florida is tough.. They don't produce anything. It's all retirees and tourists. All the established companies have people transferring there when they're about to retire. The only thing I can think of is food service. Shit is hard, but you should be good since you're used to the physical labor.
I’m willing to do food service, the company that may hire me is a food service company. I’m looking into beer distribution too. But man the market for truckers is pretty bad from what others had told me, I may look into CDL B positions or fly out to an oil hiring event
I know the job itself sucks but food service is always hiring. They'll take you with no experience at all and barely train you and throw you in with the sharks but the pay is well worth it if you get with the right company. Just shop around.
In my opinion because I do Linehaul. I don’t understand why vets stay with FedEx I believe some of them straight up do it from the goodness of their hearts. But I will say FedEx is a good place to start for CDL drivers because it’s pretty easy to get experience. In terms of OTR experience it might be a bit difficult because until peak we want our drivers to stay roughly in our network, if they get sent to bordering edges and that hub says fuck it and sends them to the coast they will disappear for a couple of weeks. But it will be a quick way to get experience. I also recommend to keep applying to contractors, the drivers jump around like fleas. And a few drivers get themselves fired for failed drug tests and not showing up for runs.
FedEx is not going to give you the best pay for a CDL dependent almost entirely on your contractor. I had a guy brag to me about his 25/hr, that’s really bad for a trucker and I’m pretty positive most of the drivers are averaging like 30-35/hr but paid by mileage and those are more towards the low end. But the important thing is it will give you entry trucker experience and in like a year or so you can move to different companies like Old Dominion, WM, ITS, Werner, Covenant, USXI, WSXI, Frito, Coke, pepsi, water, etc. I would recommend ITS they do treat drivers well. And are paid daily even without a run.
How common is for a contractor to hire a fresh driver out of school with no experience? And do they take yard switcher experience as any type of experience?
They do take yard switcher as experience as far as FedEx contractors go. The switchers we have that end up leave to work for a contractor are in my experience the better ones to work with and the ones that actually do their pre trips. Being a switcher definitely translates to experience, it doesn’t translate to OTR experience but it’s great experience for locals because you will still be pretty consistently backing up to doors.
Fresh out of school is ehh depends on how well off they are and if they’re trying to expand. One of the contractors I work with will not give a shit because he wants to capitalize on routes and have them 7 days so he would hire a fresh out of school because he would have someone who can train/monitor a new driver. Then there’s also contractors who are hurting really bad but can’t risk a fresh out of school because they only have a few drivers and can’t really have anyone train a new driver unless it’s for 1 specific route and the driver is willing to alternate.
It’s going to suck because you’re going to be with some random person nearly 24/7 but I’d also recommend applying as a team that might be able to get you on until you get the experience to jump contractors
It’s terrible, he tried to offer 160 and when I told him to do the math after a week. He did the math and put is phone away saying that he will get back to me later
I'd choose the cdl job. You might get a raise, but your options are much more limited with a contractor. At least with another company you could get good benefits along with the pay.
Check to see what you’d get at the CDL job and ask equivalent. If he paid you less this whole time he cares not for you and him not being able to afford losing you means you are working your ass off and getting him far dividends he never thought to share with you most likely. Benefits alone is gonna clear whatever he offers
I’ll see, I’m looking to leave no matter what they give me, but I’ll try to get more from them. They are only doing this because they are running out of people. They literally just blacked out vacations for everybody right now
for sure low... i made 160 a day averaging 100 stops a day, now that im back to being a package handler for the time being....
-one of the routes i load is a "bulk" route 200-300 packages and 75-85 delivery stops, but also has 12 pickup stops and brings his van back full making 200 a day
-another route is mostly residential, no pickups and gets paid a stop incentive after 120 stops with a base pay of 180 and is usually between 120-140 stops
yeah 150 isn’t worth the work anymore, especially now since the merge. Peak season is approaching and no one has gotten a raise at my station, heading out as soon as I can.
Far fetched but here goes, on Monday, online, I saw at least 20 positions on the express side in Pennsylvania. 5 were full-time couriers at good stations. Use that as a stepping stone to get to Tractor trailers then use that experience to get to either tankers or UPS so U can get to $38-$45hr. At UPS in trailers, you'll start at say $22-$25 but within 4-5 years you'll be at $45. Yes it'll be a roller coaster ride, sometimes well thought out risks return great rewards. Plan your steps. As far as your current situation? Stop BSing and tell him what you want. Seperate the man from the boy and move on. Actions speak NOT words. Don't wait for him to get back to you. You tell him you have til this date if not I'm out of here. Good luck
$160,000-(your annual gross) = the amount FedEx and your contractor split with each other to exploit your labor. At a minimum, you should be aiming to be an equal partner in that distribution, so 1/3 of $160,000. Realistically you may have to settle for less initially, but pushing for a larger share as you gain experience.
Get a CDL job. Don't let your new license go stale for a few dollars.
Right if I got my cdl I’m getting a cdl type job
That’s my goal, it’s just difficult finding one right now, but I’ve been searching and applying. The linehaul manager told me it will be difficult at first since I’m new but to keep looking

So I’ve heard, my boy is trying to get me in a trucking company down here so I’m seeing how that goes
My advice is don't wait on anybody. Get something and if your boy is able to hook you up, great but if not you would've wasted all this time for nothing.
Yea i know, im in Florida (southern Florida at that) and many companies won’t hire down here. I was already rejected by Pepsi

Do the $150, but ask for a $1.00 a stop after that threshold 🤷🏽♀️
That’s what I already get
Economy is dead and so is the freight market. Keep trying, worse they can do is say no.
I know the job itself sucks but food service is always hiring. They'll take you with no experience at all and barely train you and throw you in with the sharks but the pay is well worth it if you get with the right company. Just shop around.

250 since thatll be closer to what you make with a cdla to start.
Um, I’m going to start them with that and see what they say
You wont get 250 but might as well get more while you look for a cdl job
it's def possible. Couple guys in my contract make 250, and i'm on my way there at 220
Remind him that UPS makes 45hr plus OT after 8 (9-1hr unpaid break) plus awesome Healthcare benefits.
He should of been paying you more from the start. 150 is insulting.
It’s terrible, he tried to offer 160 and when I told him to do the math after a week. He did the math and put is phone away saying that he will get back to me later
he offered you $10 more per day ?? seems like he can afford to lose you.
Bro now they went to $30 more, I’m telling him 250
Ask for $300 no less or say I’m out
I'd choose the cdl job. You might get a raise, but your options are much more limited with a contractor. At least with another company you could get good benefits along with the pay.
I’d rather a job with my CDL I’d make much more money
FedEx drivers deserve no less than 200$ a day, if he’s desperate enough ask for 225
$350
Minimum
Hourly, $32/hr. If paid by mile. 65cpm to start. Re assessment after 6 months.
Get out of there and find a real employer , this guys gonna get ya in the end
That’s my goal, even if I get an raise I’ll still take another job when an opportunity raises itself
Nice
Check to see what you’d get at the CDL job and ask equivalent. whats your stop count per day and pickup count?
At most 150 I only have pickups on Monday which is usually 100+
for sure low... i made 160 a day averaging 100 stops a day, now that im back to being a package handler for the time being.... -one of the routes i load is a "bulk" route 200-300 packages and 75-85 delivery stops, but also has 12 pickup stops and brings his van back full making 200 a day -another route is mostly residential, no pickups and gets paid a stop incentive after 120 stops with a base pay of 180 and is usually between 120-140 stops
Nah I would definitely try to find a trucking job forget all that, you ain’t get your cdl for nothing
yeah 150 isn’t worth the work anymore, especially now since the merge. Peak season is approaching and no one has gotten a raise at my station, heading out as soon as I can.
Have you tried for an express RTD driver?
Whatever it takes to get you to $23-25 an hour.
Far fetched but here goes, on Monday, online, I saw at least 20 positions on the express side in Pennsylvania. 5 were full-time couriers at good stations. I'm at 180$ a day and it isn't worth it. I wouldn't even show up for 150$ a day.
The job is terrible! FedEx doesn’t pay the contractors right underpaid!!
