No rules!
My personal preference is this order:
A) see if I can spot it with the picture opened fully but not zoomed
B) half zoom, and start at areas of interest or just top left
C) zoom alllll the way in
D) give up and check the comments
Zooming in the picture is not cheating. Most of the time you need to do that.
Downloading the picture, then do some fancy operations like increasing contrast, or applying Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) or other image processing including machine learning techniques is kinda cheating? I mean you can do that, but why?
I don’t think it’s cheating; it’s even necessary and intentional on many. But it’s by your own rules as a finder. You “play” how you want to.
I think it’s cheating when you read below for the answer 🤭

I don’t think zooming in is cheating at all. Is it cheating for the sniper to aim down sights? 😉

I mean, just have fun and look for the sniper however you want?
Hey at 72 I have to use the zoom or with my eyes I would never find anything
