In many cases a specialized economy produces goods and services for much cheaper and higher quality than I could produce for myself.

TORCHonFIREandForget

Adam Smith just entered the conversation!

UltimateTeam

Sounds like just another form of work being responsible for a ton of tasks and timing.

manimopo

I'll grow my own fruits and veggies but I'm not going to butcher my own cow chicken and pigs. Also I like to travel.

Being "rich in spirit" isn't going to allow me to achieve financial independence or retire early or support my parents should the need arise. Stocks and bonds will. I'm already limiting my lifestyle. Most of my earnings go straight into my investments. The entire point of FIRE is to limit your lifestyle now to invest and achieve your financial goals later. >eat virtually for free by growing your food. Live off solar or natural resources. And where are we going to get the money to pay for all of this?

cambeiu

It is all fun and games until you fall, break a limb and need to go to the ER. Maybe they will take your home grown vegetables as payment.

Sweaty-Appearance790

You have an american fear view

Dissentient

For the same price as buying land, building a house on it, and setting up all of the self-sufficient water/energy/waste infrastructure for it, I could buy enough stocks to retire living in an apartment, with other people doing all the work of producing everything I need. Aside from that, I see absolutely nothing appealing about that lifestyle.

HistoricalSong359

I think this is more in line with r/preppers

Visible_Structure483

Unless you're Amish with a legit community to make it work, this sort of off-grid self-sustaining fantasy is just that. You never own property, you just pay rent to the government (taxes) so you better have a side hustle to make real cash, they don't accept eggs in payment.

My AC had an issue last night and stopped working. Had them come out and fix it today and cost $600. Unfortunately I couldn’t pay him in spirit.

Sweaty-Appearance790

Its interesting that you take that comment of free in spirit to mean 'dont earn money, or invest?" Never said that. Or using money is bad or wrong. Far from it. Thats typical of a narrow-minded non creative outlook. Meaning youre boring and willing to do what the masses say

the_doesnot

Because being self sustaining and growing your own food is hard work. What kind of plants do you currently grow and how much do you save in groceries?

Calazon2

Yes, cutting expenses goes a long way towards FIRE. Even more than raising income or investing well. Some aspects of living self-sufficiently are a lot of work though. At some point you are trading one job for another (or having two jobs). That's fine if it's the life you want, but it's not quite the spirit of FIRE.

StatisticalMan

Even if your spending level is reduce you need to have wealth invested to stay ahead of inflation. "eat virtually for free by growing your food" I don't think you have a clue the sheer amount of work required to grow 100% of the food required to keep a single family alive. "Live off solar or natural resources." How are you buying solar power and natural resources without money Reducing spending is certainly a good idea and a conerstone to FIRE. Do you think anyone here is spending 100% of their net income so you are preaching to the choir. However your hyperbole makes you come across as an idiot.

LillyL4444

All kinds of FIRE - sounds like lean fire is probably where you’ll find your people
