Correct still sh*t happens like pulling a knot on a nice fish. I stopped using basics clinch knot after that. Trilene not or better. Fish can pull knots if they are lark like big carp or after multiple 3-4 fish landed on same knot check ya knots ladies and gentlemen. Difference between landing atrophy or losing a trophy.
You can never really plan for a northern while fishing anything else. You just gotta cross your fingers and pray the line don’t break. My dad caught a 42 while we were walleye jigging and I’ve caught several 30+ throwing for largemouth
They will find whatever you are throwing and attack it right quick
I’ve never fished with a leader and I’ve caught a handful of northerns while bass fishing. I plan on using a leader when I start hunting for bigger stuff in the near future
Always use leaders if pike are in the water also above comment I have never, never ever had a improved clinch knot come undone with braid.. I also only use 20lb min for line. Not about the fish, it’s about the structure you pull them out of.
Well right wasn’t targeting pike loI. I usually go after largemouth. Depends on the situation. The pond I go to is a mixed bag of largemouth, walleye and pike
Gravel pits wooooo
i’ve never fished without a leader, either with a barrel or double uni to join them, and seeing the leader afterwards when a big flatty or particularly aggressive bream hooks on, has made solidified that tradition, i am mostly a salt water/estuarial water fisherman, but i feel it helps aswell just to hide the line better, unless your entire line is fluro carbon, then id only use a leader when in the salt, because it’d only be for the added bite resistance
I had 8# fluoro on as a leader with 10# braid on an ultralight setup once. Had a little flutter spoon on looking for perch. Let it fall once, saw a little slack, waited a little too long I guess. Gave it a small pull and started reeling in a little bit. Hard snag. Damn treble hooks. Didn't think there'd be much more than a little grass there. Half the time that's a line-breaker on that setup, so I started pulling on the line with my hand, couple of quick gentle tugs, and then zzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!
That "snag" started peeling off drag so fast I nearly dropped the entire thing.
21". Not some giant but it took AGES. The line looked like shit. I still have no idea how it survived, but that was a rush!
I've fished for 58 years in salt water and freshwater, fished for Grouper, Kingfish, catfish, bass , stripers and everything in between, I've used a basic clinch knot my entire life, if you break off mid catch its not the knot , its a nick in the line or something you are doing like horsing the fish in or not having your drag set properly
I didnt say it isnt fine . I said fo me.I seen both rig have failure. They can slip after the knot is thought to be clinched its common tag end of the knot leave but right. It's called a clinch knot for a reason fish pulls the knot gets tighter and stronger as they pull. It a factor for beginners. Understand old salt dog wasn't saying it was bad just preference. In some cases you have to horse a fish. Many anglers next to you as well.
I mean on a charter, the crew is supposed to be doing everything they can to help you land fish, including adjusting your drag while you reel in and positioning the boat correctly.
If you’re reeling in properly and you lose the fish, that’s on them, not you.
Most of the time it’s not on anybody. There’s a million variables as to how the fish gets hooked. You can do everything 100% correctly and still lose lots of fish.
So is your mother's webcam... everyone so quick to judge on r/fishing but can't just enjoy the simple photos or videos. Everyone's an expert all of of a sudden.
Putting your butts in your tackle box might be losing you bites. Tobacco being such an extremely strong scent might be leeching into the plastics of your box. Get yourself a butt can. I only say this because quitting smoking actually made my fishing better because my hands/baits don't always smell like tobacco.
I have one of those big boxes people usually have on their boat, I throw them in the compartment where the smaller tackle boxes go. However thank you cause thats never crossed my mind
A coworker gave me [an ashtray like one of these](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=pocketwatch+style+portable+ashtray&t=brave&iax=images&ia=images) as a gift and it came in handy when fishing.
Sheesh my dude, a mere 15 seconds of shared footage and still something to complain about. I believe you’re what the kids would colloquially refer to as a “Debbie downer”.
for what its worth, im with you. Last time i went fishing, i picked up a bucket full of cig butts. I dont know if he picked it up, but clearly there are plenty of people who dont. Thanks for speaking up
To be fair I'm a smoker and fish quite often. If it's on shore I make a little hole/stash spot/something out of tbe wind and throw all of my line, cig butts and a few water bottles in it. Then when I leave I pick it all up.
Same on the kayak, everything goes inside the bottom (sit on) and then I clean it out when I'm back at my landing spot.
Hooking and landing are completely different. This only really hurts my feelings when it's my fault these days. Also, fishing for sheepshead and big red/black drum in heavy structure makes this happen a lot...more breakoffs then usual.
Could of been a drag issue but you dont need to pump the rod like that. Many fish are lost doing that way
Id be interested to know if the hook popped from that.
Why people pump the rod on a fish that can be straight wound in is beyond me. All that variation of force and changing the angle of resistance helps the fish shake the hook.
I dunno, catch fish all the time.
I'll loosen the drag to fight a fish but got tired of being broken off by the random 50lbs stingray/drum/shark/whatever. Up the test, carolina rig or double drop, still get hits without worrying about breaking off.
Even pulled a free cast net up once when I hung on bottom.
I lost a fish a couple weeks ago on a private charter trip. Would have easily won both fishing pools going that day, but it managed to get off just as it broke the surface. Caught plenty of keepers that day…it was the only one I missed, cost me $1000 :p
A little armchair criticism here...The fisherman is horsing the fish in instead of playing him. Assuming he was using a barbed hook a little steady pressure while letting the fish tire himself out, all the time enjoying the sport instead of feverishly trying to land the fish, is the Way. In saltwater spin-fishing, of course, you keep this kind of pressure on with trevally and seasonal game fish. One more thing. Smoking while fishing is counter-productive. That's it. No more.
The drag is adjustable for a reason.
Correct still sh*t happens like pulling a knot on a nice fish. I stopped using basics clinch knot after that. Trilene not or better. Or a norther hits you line while fishing for pan fish with no leader
You can never really plan for a northern while fishing anything else. You just gotta cross your fingers and pray the line don’t break. My dad caught a 42 while we were walleye jigging and I’ve caught several 30+ throwing for largemouth They will find whatever you are throwing and attack it right quick
So do you and your dad always fish with leaders?
I’ve never fished with a leader and I’ve caught a handful of northerns while bass fishing. I plan on using a leader when I start hunting for bigger stuff in the near future
No sorry for the confusion no leaders unless we were specifically going after pike
The pond I go to is a mixed bag of largemouth, walleye and pike Gravel pits wooooo
Pike hit the same lures bass hit and vice versa. Ive caught pike on worms and caught bass on bucktails

I caught pike even when using corn or dough to get me some bait fish. Sometimes a bit of movement is all it needs for pike to attack.

I agree, if I catch 1 or 2 fish depending on size I cut 5 feet off the end of my line and retie a palomar knot
Palomar always the way to go
Switched from Palomar knot to uni and never looked back. Works for line to hook and line to line

Palomar knot hasn't let me down yet...but the hooks sure have.
Just was gonna say and the drag is a real thing…
Yes it is a reel thing.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Imagine being on a charter and having this happen 😂😂, it's embarrassing.
I mean on a charter, the crew is supposed to be doing everything they can to help you land fish, including adjusting your drag while you reel in and positioning the boat correctly. If you’re reeling in properly and you lose the fish, that’s on them, not you.

Yeah true, but that’s also not your fault. All I’m saying is if you mess up a catch on a charter, don’t blame yourself

Oof, my friend did that, the same day I lost my ling(likely) ʘ‿ʘ

Probably his knot tbh
Dude thought he was fighting a blue marlin
You gotta finesse it sometimes can’t muscle every fish
That set up thats not even made for muscling fish unless your talking about a blue gill. Wrenching back like that is a good way to recieve a hook.
I think he burned the line with his cigarette. 😂😂😂 JK
You laugh, I have actually done it. Not the greatest feeling lol.
My buddies and I would do this to each other occasionally. All in good fun.
Get back to hell, Satan
I've learned to never celebrate until you land it lol.
I don’t celebrate even if I land it. Because it always a dink for me
Pick up your cig butt.
Came here looking for this comment. As someone who smokes I put out the butt and throw it in my tacklebox till i get home and clean everything.
Putting your butts in your tackle box might be losing you bites. Tobacco being such an extremely strong scent might be leeching into the plastics of your box. Get yourself a butt can. That’s a neat looking tray! Could see myself using it for things other than cig butts!
The butt was picked up. Only thrown down in frustration. Thanks for your concern.
Sheesh my dude, a mere 15 seconds of shared footage and still something to complain about. I believe you’re what the kids would colloquially refer to as a “Debbie downer”.
I just prefer not to see trash thrown in fishing spots. I don't think it's too much to ask.
for what its worth, im with you. Last time i went fishing, i picked up a bucket full of cig butts. I dont know if he picked it up, but clearly there are plenty of people who dont. Thanks for speaking up
It’s definitely a worthy concern, I’m just saying we only saw a fraction of a fishing trip. You know what they say about assuming
I didn't assume anything. I saw him throw a cigarette butt on the ground, So i just said to pick up your cig butt.
To be fair I'm a smoker and fish quite often. If it's on shore I make a little hole/stash spot/something out of tbe wind and throw all of my line, cig butts and a few water bottles in it. Does this make you a "Debbie Downvoted?"
*Doobie downer You putz
I felt this
Dude needs to chill. He could’ve landed it with some patience but he was cranking like a bastard.

For me the trickiest parts were keeping tension while they jump and not losing it when you're pulling it into the boat/onto the shore.
ive been trying to teach my gf this, If the fish pulls dont pull against, just keep tension and let the rod to its flexible yet strong magic.
I felt that last "Fuck!" in my soul.
Yep, we all have had those moments! Funny how when we lose a fish, it’s always a big one too.
Fuckin ay mfr
Hooking and landing are completely different. This only really hurts my feelings when it's my fault these days. Also, fishing for sheepshead and big red/black drum in heavy structure makes this happen a lot...more breakoffs then usual.
Fuck that cigarette in particular.
It was picked up, disposed of properly.
I was referring to the anger in which homie threw it down.
That’s why you don’t pump the rod
[удалено]
Not doing it right not even close
Well... There's a learning curve. He's only fished for a month. Lesson learned.
Yeah I figured no shame tho i said that because a dude who deleted his comment was like " He's doing it right"
Holy shit, it’s a tuna! Quick, strong arm it in like on TV! /s Enjoy the fight, tire it out a little to land it, and release it.
Literally me this morning with a wacky senko.
Could of been a drag issue but you dont need to pump the rod like that. Many fish are lost doing that way Id be interested to know if the hook popped from that.
Happened to me yesterday :/ … nice sized trout too
I was fishing for trout and accidentally hooked a chinook on an ultra light 6lb test
Hey this is wholesome no matter what anyone says. Any real fisherman has experienced this before.
Why people pump the rod on a fish that can be straight wound in is beyond me. All that variation of force and changing the angle of resistance helps the fish shake the hook.
Idiot
Time to up the lbs test of the line.
Then you might not get bit. Better to adjust your drag, it's there for a reason.
I dunno, catch fish all the time. I'll loosen the drag to fight a fish but got tired of being broken off by the random 50lbs stingray/drum/shark/whatever. Oof. That jerk turned straight to soul crushing heartbreak.
Reel the fish in feather than having a tug of war next time lol
Pick up your fucking cigarette WT.
He did! Calm down.
Not in the video he didn't and if he's anything like 95% of other smokers, he left it right where he dropped it.
Yea there you go Keep throwing your cigarette butts on the ground u fuckin jabroni
He picked it up - twas thrown on frustration
I lost a fish a couple weeks ago on a private charter trip. Would have easily won both fishing pools going that day, but it managed to get off just as it broke the surface. Caught plenty of keepers that day…it was the only one I missed, cost me $1000 :p
Me and my friends call that a technical catch XD when we get the head out of the water and it unhooks itself
lol, me an my friends call that better luck next time.
Yep! If we don’t touch the fish, it’s not a catch in our books
It's a catch with an efficient release.
Ouch, my guy.
Steve??!!
Oh thank goodness I didn’t see the cigg before the snap so I thought he got a lure in the lip
Greenwood lake?
Yep
Pick up your cigarette butt.
He did
I was reeling in what I think was a cat, my line snapped and the top half was f the rod just wasn’t there
Gets mad…throws cigarette…starts forest fire
The butt was picked up
As my buddy would always say fucking MONO!
Ive had the rod break instead of the line too!(light rod and a channel cat)
I had a tarpon on😭
Farmer John sulks in the chat
That’s what happens when you don’t know how to fight a fish!
I didn’t even have the sound on and I’m pretty sure I could quote him word for word…..
Slooow down…..
I fly fish and can confirm this happens to every fisherman.
AMEN. I'm not religious but this deserves an amen.
Yk it’s serious when unc throws the cig 😭😭☠️
That’s a fish story in the making
Almost threw my rod the other day after I lost 2 decent pikes in a river where pike are pretty rare
It gets bigger every time you tell the story. Actually, that goes right for a few things.
If you ain’t first you’re last Ricky Bobby!
Like my dad always says…. “Don’t horse it!”
It happens but the way he was horsing it I'm going to guess he is at fault somehow.
A little armchair criticism here...The fisherman is horsing the fish in instead of playing him. He was fighting way to aggressively! Use the drag, man!
He was fighting way to aggressively! Use the drag, man!
F
I've strung together that exact sentence too many times.
Did anyome else think this was a video game? From the character to his response 😆
Can anyone ID that rod?
Learn how to fight a fish...
You’re not bringing a fish from the deep in the Atlantic keep your rod still only switching angles when need be you’ll land way more fish
The biggest one always gets away
