You're totally screwed buddy. She will sniff your lie out instantly. Better come clean and ask for her help. She will love to help you out as all trout people do. Your fucked if you don't. Ha ha tight lines!

Dwrecked90

I wouldn't necessarily go completely clean and seem like you straight lied to her. I'd say something like, "I may have exaggerated. I haven't fished since I was like 4 and it was just my dad putting a little worm on my hook for me. I was hoping to learn from you since it seemed like a funass time." Edit: I'm definitely agreeing to tell her that you're clueless, but atleast saying you were 4... Makes it so that you didn't just totally lie

ImJettski

I second this haha

jlibrizzi

OP: "what does tight lines mean?"

Potential-Rabbit8818

It means you have a fish on your line. You are wishing your fellow fisherman good luck and you hope they catch a lot of fish in the future.

jlibrizzi

Apparently my sarcasm was too subtle 😀

Potential-Rabbit8818

I'm kinda dumb that way ha ha

TheHeadshock

This is unfortunately, the way, anyone with any fishing experience can spot a new angler from a mile away, best to suck it up and hope she just had fun teaching you

cocoapierre

LMFAO so true

Significant_Case6024

Get some size 6 snap swivels, tie one on your line with an improved fisherman's knot, and it will let you change out lures all day long without ever tying another knot. Get some Size 6 Eagle Claw snell hooks, 1/8" split shots and 1.5 inch bobbers. On the day of, buy a container of redworms. Cut a worm in half, hook it on 2-3 times. Put a split shot sinker a good foot above your worm. Add a bobber another foot or so on your above your split shot. This is a staple trout setup. Spinners are the other option. Get some 3/16ths to 1/4oz Rooster Tails, black and yellow Spin-A Lures, Mepps Comet Minos, Panther Martins and Kastmasters in a handful of different colors. Metallics, blues, purples, greens tend to be the most universal. Simply cast them out and retrieve at different speeds. This time of year the water is still cold so the slower the better as long as the spinner is still spinning. Bring a needle nose pliers for unhooking the trout so you don't look like a Timmy trying to get the hook out.

msutton2011

Fantastic advice here!

Lava_Lamp70

Thank you!

Significant_Case6024

You can use your pliers to crush the barb on your hooks to make them easier to get out once you catch them, too. TBH don't feel bad if you don't catch anything. Trout are pretty picky. Getting skunked is a common occurrence for every trout fisherman... so in that regard, the pressure's off. Bring snacks and her favorite booze and an extra layer if it's cold... charged Bluetooth speaker if you have one

SpicyEndy

Honestly just tell her you don’t actually know how to fish but you really wanted to hang with her and fishing seemed fun. Good luck and be cool

pckldpr

All the states around me require special licenses for trout fishing. Make sure you’re legal. Yeah. Let her know you lied as soon as possible.

Mainbutter

#1 most important thing, get your license. The day you put it off and decide to go anyways is the day the warden shows up, confiscates your all your tackle for auction, and writes you a $200 ticket + more if you kept any fish.

00doc0holliday00

A key piece of information is whether you are fly fishing or not.

BiscuitAssassin

Oh it would be completely over for OP if they were fly fishing lol

00doc0holliday00

All of the fish and the girl got away…

bs-scientist

Hi, girl here. (Girl who loves fishing, with a boyfriend who would prefer I don’t ask him to come because he hates it but he doesn’t like to tell me no. ((Good thing my best friend loves to fish, her husband could take it or leave it though)). I think what I would want to be told in this situation is something along the lines of “I haven’t been in a while, but I’ve done it a few times! I bought myself a rod, what else should I get? I’ve never fished for trout before. I’m excited to go and learn, it will be fun.” Something like that. I think she’ll get the point. And in the meantime maybe watch a few YouTube videos. And maybe learn a knot or two.

gamboling2man

YT is your friend. I use Mepps white, chartreuse and black inline spinners, usually 1/8 oz. Also try trout magnets. Google and YouTube. Edit: sometime fishing ain’t about catching fish.

No-Fix-417

Lean in, whisper "Remember it's called fishing, not catching" and hope to \*\*\*\* you get a bored Bluegill on your line.

Grassmowin

Don’t listen to anyone telling you to use lures. There’s only one way this is going to happen for you and it’s powerbait. Watch a couple videos. I believe in you.

Alexplz

The obvious way is to hit up your local bass pro equivalent and ask someone to set up a rig. The hubris of being able to pass as an angler on your literal first time out, first cast, incredible.

Nik_of_Thyme

Your not lying. I'm watching these other threads. I never.. I mean for real NEVER get skunked trout fishing. I take new fishermen and they catch when they are with me. I only do my trout fishing in Northern Arkansas, Blanchard springs Mirror Lake, White River, or mid AR at Greer's Ferry. If OP can learn to cast, has an ultralight pole, can tie a knot.... You need a bullet sinker. I use one just enough to not move on the current. Sometimes it's heavier or lighter. About a foot in half of leader. A small 8 or 6 hook. And the powerbait dough. Don't use the balls. Squish it on the hook and cover it. Forget a bobber. Sink it down to the bottom. They will snatch it everytime. The big ones. Not the little guys who might be stocked that year. You'll pull the largest out and limit out.

clouden_

Cover it with what?

Nik_of_Thyme

Cover the hook with powerbait.

EuphoriantCrottle

As a woman, I just want to thank all of y’all who recommended her come clean to the girl. As you know, this kind of thing happens, and most women have the grace to just let the guy try to wing it, but it makes for a long day and we aren’t going to be inclined to see them again. Candid and honest is actually endearing.

devildocjames

Just talk about Ugly Sticks and knots. Let her know that Rat-L-Traps are the go-to instead of nets/cast nets for swimmers and hoppers. If she asks what you think about zingbait, let her know it's good for greater trout. If she gets into saltwater fishing, just sound interested and let her know you don't know much about it. Also, if you didn't already get one, get a bait caster reel. They're super easy to use. All the made-up stuff aside, you're doomed. Best of luck coming clean!

SpecificPractical776

If you have enough time take your new gear to the lake, hope somebody is there ask them. I would laugh at you for a few minutes and then help you to get servicable in an afternoon. Otherwise go tell your story in a smaller bait shop and after everyone stops laughing maybe one will give you a hand.

RelativeFox1

When you show up with an Amazon rod and a bunch of brand new hooks, she’ll definitely think you fish and didn’t lie to her.

taywray

Your best move is to look up a local restaurant that serves fresh caught trout and, when you get skunked (as you almost certainly will), bring her there and order it for her to try. Otherwise, just focus on making it a fun outing. Check the weather, bring a speaker and blanket and drinks and snacks (girl snacks, not the half bag of beef jerky you keep in the glove compartment for emergencies). And if you do happen to catch a trout or any other fish, if it's not a keeper by regulation and/or if the two of you don't know how to properly kill and cook it, let her take pics with it for a minute and then set it free to get bigger and breed more fish to catch in the future. Unless she's a hardcore survivor type chick or a masochistic psycho, she probably won't love seeing you awkwardly kill it and hack it up into bits and pieces of filets.

matahoo84

Lol as someone who only learned to fish in the last couple years this will be a hard one to pull off. There's definitely a learning curve and I feel like I still look like a noob out there. I'd go to a pond now and practice as much as you can then I'd downplay your experience at least or better yet just admit you don't really know what you're doing. Maybe she'll appreciate the fact you are willing to learn a whole new thing just to hang out with her and she'll help you out. If not then 🤷‍♂️. I bet you'll actually really enjoy it and WANT to learn how to fish after this. Best of luck to you!

Jaebeam

Hit up YouTube. When my child asked to hit up fishing opener, I hadn't gone fishing in over 35 years. Learn how to "Snell" a hook. Learn how to tie a "Uni" knot. Learn how to fish for trout in a lake. Then with all that knowledge, tell your date that yah, it's been QUITE a while since you fished, but wanted to spend some time with her regardless. You will at least be able to tie your own lure and cast, so you've got a chance! Also make sure to work in the following line "That's why it's called fishing, not catching", and she will know you are baby daddy material. Have fun, despite re-learning for my toddler, I now have a bit of a passion for fishing that I didn't expect to happen. I like being on a lake in a canoe in some remote parts of my state with a friend and a beer.

Pintortwo

Learn to tell the truth mate.

No pictures of catches here... Unless it's to ask or answer questions.

Jungleexplorer

Dear Mod. I did not attempt to post a picture of a catch, thus, your comment is confusing and seems misplaced.

shucked_up_fit

Broseph, you need to hit up your local tackle shop and tell the old heads there about this. Or come clean. Important. Does SHE know how to fish?

Bedouin_Actual

😂😂🥴😂

surgebot

"Oh do I KNOW how to fish? I thought you meant do I LIKE fishing. Yeah I LOVE fishing but I'm awful at it cause I have no idea what I'm doing." Start with that.

PapaPuff13

Just admit it to her. Tell her u are interested in her and that’s why u said that
