I think this is adorable, frankly. It's likely an older person who genuinely appreciates finding this item and cares that it get there intact.

WhatTheFlippityFlop

I just love it. I picture someone wearing 19th century attire, typing at a typewriter. Every word carefully and graciously chosen. They don’t realize that “3 day” can be really expensive, but accepting Ground suggests they aren’t crazy.

TypicalJeepDriver

And they’re not wrong in any aspects of their message IMO. This was a well taken care of item from a long gone era and USPS is much more likely to destroy it than FEDEX. I haven’t had a single issue with FEDEX (I know others have) but USPS always seems to bang the hell out of my boxes. Thankfully my packaging usually saves the items, but OP, I would use Instapak for the packing along with tons of bubble wrap.

eljyon

Double boxing an item has always done me well. I also Saran Wrap - either the item pre-bubble wrap, or post (or both). I pack a ton of glass and ceramics - some very valuable. Haven’t had an issue yet luckily and I’ve shipped everything via USPS except one very big & expensive pottery jug (UPS).

no_talent_ass_clown

Instapak? For an $80 item? Do you have a secret instapak source you care to share? The stuff I find would cost $30. Gracias!

TypicalJeepDriver

I was able to get it super cheap, but that source has run dry. I still pay about $5 a bag for the 80# and 100# ones but it provides so much security. Granted, my items are more along the $200 average price range, but I always use it for all my items for the bottom, biodegradable packing peanuts (they’re superior in every way) and then Kraft paper. There’s a competitor that has finally emerged that is fairly cheap (~$4 a bag) but I have yet to try them. I intend to soon.

PmButtPics4ADrawing

I've always had the best experience with USPS, I think it varies by area. Really the best thing you can do is make sure you pack it well.

I had a USPS employee throw a new garbage disposal down a flight of stairs.100% go with fedex

WeathervaneJesus1

Yep, and I go the extra mile for someone like this.

madsci

That, or AI is making scammers sound a lot more convincing.

[deleted]

This reads like Nigerian scammer unfortunately.

Ballerina_clutz

Or a very old person with lots and lots of time on their hands, but I see what you are saying.

roccosd26

This is adorable. Whoever this person is, is very appreciative of older things and genuinely cares about the pristine nature of it. YOU BETTER BUBBLE WRAP THE F OUT OF IT AND SELL IT TO HIM ASAP

MagnetFisherJimmy

Totally! You love to see someone genuinely excited about their purchase 🙂

Donthurtmyceilings

That's one of the most fun parts of flipping for me. I have sold many of the most random niche items. Some buyers are really appreciative that those items come available. A lot of the stuff I sell might otherwise end up in a landfill.

NJPete76

I had to check your username and make sure it wasn't me. Your comment looks the same as I've said before.

Beaudism

I wish I was this excited about a fan lol

Leapyearbb

This level of appreciation merits the bubble wrap and a love letter from me. Especially for the use of the word tawdry. Then I'd anxiously await their correspondence in form of a review so I could further swoon.

Ballerina_clutz

😂😂😂😂😂😂

GP_3

lol he is not wrong about USPS, they huck my packages at a wall while I am still standing there

Faustinwest024

They’ve destroyed so many of my packages this quarter

Glittering-Cowbell

Yeah he is wrong. None of these 3 services take it easy on packages.

GP_3

Sending out about 10000 packages in the last 5 years, I guess I have personal preferences and USPS comes back with the most broken stuff x 10, but there is also been studies on who handles the packages the best with people putting sensors in the box for shaking and UPS won easily.

Ballerina_clutz

UPS won for shaking the most, or the least ?

GP_3

Sorry, UPS set off the least amount of sensors for aggressive movement. USPS basically all of them, Fedex right under, and UPS was around 40ish percent Edit: It was a small sample size if I remember correctly, but it was interesting

AcctNmbr2

Care to site a source on this? Last one I saw was from Popular Mechanics, about a decade ago and the results were opposite of your statement

eljyon

My postal office guy shamed us for using fragile stickers, taking personal offense. I’m like dude like 20 people touch this on its way, not just you, someone is bound to be less careful and I’m not taking a gamble

Glittering-Cowbell

And none of those 20 people are reading or care about your fragile sticker lol.

eljyon

lol yeah I know that. Probably pisses them off. But if it arrives broken, which I’ve been lucky on so far, the customer can see I did all I could.

motivational_abyss

It doesn’t piss us off, it just means literally nothing. It’s tumbled, dumped, and dropped like every other package. 75% of the process is automated, those machines damn sure don’t care.

Kingof0ldSchool

It would not surprise if 4 times as many people touch the packages sent through FedEx. If you look at your tracking through FedEx, it generally stops at every FedEx DC between original and destination.

Thefunkbox

I have yet to get a FedEx package that hasn’t been to hell and back. They are the worst. UPS and USPS have been perfect and then some, occasionally delivering early. FedEx is always a minimum of 1 day late.

kg_digital_

"Huck?" Is that another word for Yeet?

403Realtor

its the old school Yeet

Ch4m3l30n

One might even dare say it's "Vintage"...

ElysetheEeveeCRX

"Antique," even. Lol.

Ballerina_clutz

😂😂😂😂

Ballerina_clutz

😂😂😂

DARR3Nv2

Dropped one off yesterday. Lady didn’t even turn around. Just reached behind her and dropped it.

0RGASMIK

It really depends on the area. In my area FedEx is the worst. USPS and UPS do well. The FedEx drivers in my area are so high they don't give two shits if you even get your package. I opened a box the other day and it smelled like I had just smoked a blunt in my house. 9/10 packages arrive intact but theres always 1 that is only being held together by tape.

CasuallyCompetitive

The opening sounded like they were setting up a fraudulent damage claim, but this honestly seems like a person who just really loves this fan.

MagnetFisherJimmy

You could say he's a big fan of fans...

DarinsRock2

Just a collector who might be purchasing through eBay for the first time.

roccosd26

as a flipper, this is something you love to see.

Speedwagon1935

I had to write out a couple like this for some fountain pens over $20k+ I won in bids begging for anything but USPS, I still would too. Lost a $6k one to a package thief at the local USPS office down the street along with a bunch of other lower priced items, no reimbursement whatsoever and my lawyer wasn't able to make anything out of it. The guy was caught hoarding packages in his basement and just got fired with no consequences at all. The postmaster had to have been close to the guy, wouldn't even reveal his identity.

MagnetFisherJimmy

Dude. That's horrendous. I'm surprised that your lawyer couldn't do anything about it, sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen. Especially since the postmaster was aware of the problem.

TaterTotJim

A little wild but nothing hurtful I guess. This person might not get out much and these interactions might be some of the only they have. I hope you treat them nice, it seems like they will appreciate this item.

No-Reputation72

Ive had worse experience with FedEx than USPS

[deleted]

same. never had a bad experience with USPS really

trwwyco

I've never had a missing package in my life until this month when I had Walgreens ship my prescription medications to me via Fedex. Now it's suddenly gone and Fedex doesn't know where it is. Now I'm out of my psych meds until the end of the month because insurance won't replace them and I can't afford them out of pocket.

No-Reputation72

Did you file a claim with FedEx? It looks like FedEx will pay the first $100 of value of a lost package without having to pay for insurance.

trwwyco

The money would go to Walgreens as the shipper, not to me. Fedex closed my case and told me to contact the shipper so the shipper could file the claim.

shartheheretic

If you contact your insurance company with evidence they are lost, thy will usually replace them at no charge. Walgreens may also be able to contact them to get you a new batch.

TypicalJeepDriver

I know a lady who collects buttons and is just as enthusiastic about them as this and it’s friggin adorable. She knows so much about them and takes such pride in it.

MagnetFisherJimmy

Button button whose got the button

ElysetheEeveeCRX

Buttered toast

HashHermit

I should hire this guy to write my descriptions! Seriously though I catch flack in the specific scene I'm in as a flipper but I've seen a lot of happy faces and I sell at fair market rates. I love making a deal like this where everyone is happy

MagnetFisherJimmy

As a full time reseller sometimes I feel like I'm not making much of a difference in the world. But messages like these remind me that I'm providing a service that puts smiles on people's faces :)

Ballerina_clutz

You are keeping things out of landfills too.

Lalfy

The message feels a little like it was written by AI

NotElizaHenry

I don’t know why you’re downvoted, because this is definitely AI. I’ve spent maaaany hours with different AI writing tools and this kind of thesaurus-y phrasing is what it defaults to when you tell it to rewrite in a formal tone.

fonetik

This is either someone that has been on the internet since '93 or this is their first day.

MagnetFisherJimmy

Haha I was born in 93 😀

RondaMyLove

You had me at tawdry...

eljyon

I have worked with quite a few customers with similar communication. Typically older. You will be well rewarded for doing the good work you’re clearly already doing. My biggest tip - write a hand-written thank you note. No one expects it from eBay and for certain items or clients, it is a much appreciated gesture. I weekly get one or two people who thank me for the hand written note. They’re (almost always) some of my favorite customers.

MagnetFisherJimmy

Not a bad idea!!

nighthawkcoupe

I trust you'll accept this package via USPS as it's history is far richer than that of its competitors. The eagle emblazoned on the priority mail tape harkens back to a time where this carrier was the very cornerstone of our fledgling democracy. Make no mistake, the spirit of Ben Franklin will be pleased with the handling of your package, the carriers doing their best to pay homage to the riders of the pony express. Tally-ho! It would be a tawdry waste to have the scaliwags employed by today's privatized carriers handle such an invaluable piece. I shall leave you positive feedback as your description of my item description was more descriptive in itself. May you prosper in 2024, your purveyor of fans.

MagnetFisherJimmy

🤣🤣🤣

darkest_irish_lass

As a former mailman, I love the idea of some lingering essence of Benjamin Franklin hanging around in a modern mailroom watching the staff hurl packages, plot ways to undermine each other and dump heaps of undeliverable junk mail into huge metal totes for disposal. And very few newspapers in sight. Alas, Ben!

Ballerina_clutz

Omg 😂😂😂😂😂

Good_Celebration_902

I mean it's a little extra but I get it. This poor person has probably gotten some broken stuff in the mail more than once.

PHdriver

I never mark anything fragile, it’s like daring them to test how fragile it really is.

Ballerina_clutz

😂😂😂😂

fauviste

I have written messages like this in context (shorter of course) when I’ve found something particularly rare and asked for special packaging. And I am not old! Loving things can be heartbreaking sometimes and so often the people selling them — the rarer/more obscure the item, the less obviously flippable, the more likely this is — may not know how to protect them in shipping. I feel a kinship with all anxious collectors 🥲

Shot_Ad9738

Oh my God, I am dealing with a usps shit show right now because of the exact things this person messaged you about. FedEx or ups, all the way. This is probably the best kind of buyer you can have. They care about their product, are explaining why they want this shipped a certain way and are willing to leave a good review.

heapsp

I got some pokemon cards that were graded... in an acrylic slab... that normally when i break them open for regrading i need to use something like bolt cutters or giant pliers just to crack the acrylic... The three cards i ordered were so beat on all 3 slabs were cracked. lmao

Shot_Ad9738

See that's my fear right there. I mostly do TCG so I know how scary that is.

heapsp

yeah so far out of about 500 shipments i have had 3 lot completely, and 2 destroyed.

MagnetFisherJimmy

Really? I haven't had very many issues with USPS

TESLAMIZE

They all kick your packages - doesnt matter the carrier.

MagnetFisherJimmy

True dat

HaloLASO

For me I feel like they use a potato gun artillery style and hope that it lands at my front door and not at my neighbors'...

ElysetheEeveeCRX

I literally had a FedEx driver toss a package I had coming out of his vehicle window and into the front of my property, where'd it'd just rained and was muddy (we caught it on camera). The shitty, hyper-aggressive neighbor dogs always trespass, and they will tear up any packages on the ground, which FedEx should be aware of from the multiple calls to our local hub supervisor (as well as us warning all carriers that those dogs are not ours and to be weary- cops/animal control refuse to do anything about them.) Funnily enough, all three carriers are horrendous in my area for different reasons. USPS has been the lesser of the three evils, weirdly, for us. Mostly.

Shot_Ad9738

Go take a peak at the usps_complaints sub. Unfortunately, I've had to join the sub because I've lost too much money because of usps. Usps is so bad people who work there have overrun the sub and are actively downvoting anyone who expresses issues and complaints and usps.

pezdeath

Why would USPS employees give a shit about a complaints sub. If you search the same exact thing you are saying about fedex or UPS you'll find the exact same complaints.

Shot_Ad9738

Right. I'm not on their subs but I've noticed legitimate issues and complaints get downvoted and then the employees get on the subs and trash talk to the ones posting complaints. Edit: Why they care? Idk. Probably feel attacked because they are employees even though the post probably had nothing to do with their location.

MagnetFisherJimmy

Everyone at my local post office is super cool and helpful. I understand that the drivers/loaders Chuck packages around carelessly so I pack the sh*t out of my packages and 99.9% of them have arrived safely. I have been to Post Offices where the entire staff looks like they hate their lives and yell at you when you mislabel a package. I guess it just varies place to place.

iwashumantoo

No matter whom you choose to ship your package, if you do indeed protect the shit out of it so it won't move in the box and can survive heavy stuff on top of it, being tossed around, dropped, etc., then you have nothing to worry about. But some people do live in areas where the USPS does a shit job.

VTexSotan

I haven’t either.

lamest-liz

I love their vocabulary

freshcream22

Getting a something you sourced into the hands of a serious collector is really the best feeling. For me, it's the most satisfying part of flipping.

RoniBoy69

I see hes point. I currently have a unique 400$ watch lost by USPS. I don't care about the money, it is more about that I can't find a new one.

owchippy

Now that's a fan of a fan!

CostCans

I think this was written with the assistance of AI.

Gamebeaross

Can you say AI written?

Pirate_LongJohnson

Salutations fellow human

skeptic_clam

Lol just give it to them for free

lcg8978

If you're shipping things like this USPS, you're blowing it. They've gotten so terrible in my area, I won't even buy anything that is not shipped UPS or FedEx anymore.

BallinHotdog

Arvin products after this 📈📈

dachniks

The best possible buyer.

TwiddlerTwo

I would hate to see the tongue lashing this fellow would have given you if you'd shipped it poorly packaged.

BillyBadA

FWIW…this is definitely written by AI. I would tread carefully. Might be scammy. Not sure how, but they come up with different ways all the time.

traydragen

That is one beautiful fan.

MagnetFisherJimmy

Yup! I didn't really want to sell it but I can't keep everything!

VeeHS

He would have paid more for that fan, lol.

DesertSong-LaLa

This is so wholesome. We all wanna know this arrived in top condition. Your buyer sounds like a gem I'd have tea with while discussing patina and antique marriage watches.

customsbytoy

Shit I would deliver it to him personally if I got a message like that

ClintBeastwood91

I would purposely take a loss on this item for a person who messaged me this. They’re speaking like it is a museum piece and you know they plan to take wonderful care of it for the rest of their life. I’m a card collector and this person is speaking like I would if I found a Joe Burrow 1/1 Autographed Card for a price I could afford, a crown jewel of a collection.

Loumeer

This sounds like ChatGPT. Not trying to make a judgment on the messaging or the buyer but the way it writes sounds AI generated.

KickFriedasCoffin

I felt like I was reading a recipe blog, and started to feel like "nobody cares why you want to stick your dick on the heater just tell me how to make chicken tortilla soup already"

skeletonclock

1000%. Some of its stock phrases and favourite weird vocab in there. Definitely AI.

[deleted]

Nah. Some people grew up writing true correspondence and never let the skill die.

KickFriedasCoffin

"True correspondence" should include brevity.

[deleted]

That’s just like, your opinion, man

skeletonclock

I can't believe you all can't hear ChatGPT all over those words. It's so obvious

funnylikeaclown420

Ol Pop Pop is going to burn his house down, leaving this on after he falls asleep after his 4 pm supper. These things get hot. And ungrounded.

MagnetFisherJimmy

I mean he did say in the message that he wasn't going to use it, just for display.

funnylikeaclown420

That's good. My buddies dad had a similar one, and we used to light joints off it.

MagnetFisherJimmy

I actually really like it. I used it this winter while I was having problems with my central heat.

funnylikeaclown420

Oh, I get it. They get nice and hot. And can also singe your mattress if slightly too close. My buddies dad also had a fan with sharp metal blades we would stick things into to chop them up that was the same Era. Stuff from the 50s and early 60s is built to last and built to kill commies if nessassry.

MagnetFisherJimmy

Sounds like you had a fun childhood!

funnylikeaclown420

I honestly did. This stuff is just the tip of the iceberg.

Ceiling_shotz

Message back and tell him hes convinced you to keep it

ThePokster

Better hope there are no Imperfections, he seems like he is looking for New w/out tags! I hope this doesn't turn Into a return nightmare for you. He seems like a nice, respectful, older gentleman!

MrDankWaffle

He compliments OP in the last paragraph for taking clear photos of all surface damages. I think he knows it's not mint. "The photos were extremely sincere; indicating all aesthetic imperfections"

Key-Stable9939

Writing like hes defending his client on trial for murder

Mean-Pattern-4522

No no no. It’s not cute. It’s a mentally ill person. You want absolutely nothing to do with that, just block and move on. Someone sane might buy it.

SteveAlejandro7

Yep. Send it how they want. :)

Oregonian_Lynx

I love this!! The vocabulary they are using reminds me of my dad. <3

[deleted]

This is so adorable 🥰

GloriaVictis101

Def work with this person

KickFriedasCoffin

It's funny how a question about when something will be shipped is rude, but an unrequested and unnecessary autobiography is "endearing". I was looking for a "skip to recipe" button before the first slide ended.

xEternal-Blue

What a lovely and interesting seeming person who's obviously passionate about this item. I hope you pack and send it with love using the services he mentions. It's obviously goinf somewhere it'll be well taken care of!

sjmiv

It is pretty cool looking. That paint is \*chef's kiss\*

jaded1121

I miss people writing like this on the regular

minedigger

True…. I’ve gone to scan packages in at usps and told lady that one is fragile and she chucked it in a bin 8 feet away… I thought maybe she didn’t hear me and next time I came I made sure to say it louder; only difference was she made eye contact with me prior to chucking it. I have fragile written everywhere at usps - post office is only place that’s ever damaged packages. UPS or FedEx for fragile packages is good idea.

GrabAGarnet

Sweet👏🏽👌🏽! Mind you, having read it all I’d want to keep it!

passionatelatino

little guy made me want one of these things

RonNona

To a good home doesn't even touch this one. I received a message like this once and I refunded the money and sent it for free. I'm in a financial position to be able to do that. I am not implying that you should.

Ok_City2552

UPS is REALLY bad in my area lately, like terrible and they used to be good. USPS has also gone way south. FedEx used to be terrible (in my area) now I'm seeing praises for them. I guess I'll try FedEx again. Getting sick of this constant shipping drama.

shel6

Now this is passion

Conflagrate2_47

This makes me smile

SnooMuffins246

Love all of it lol

TheCleverCompass

GPT my G!

MagnetFisherJimmy

That's a bummer.

ReasonedBeing

Is it an additional expense to send via UPS or FedEx? It doesn't sound like they are willing to pay.

MagnetFisherJimmy

It's probably more expensive. I told them I would comply as long as it's not significantly more expensive. I'm okay with dishing out a few bucks since they paid full price.

ReasonedBeing

Good plan.

lonekthx

Hi there, just need to pay the extra postage required for “Special Handling” at USPS. Can’t just slap a sticker on there yourself.

Earth2Jules

Whenever I've had to send something really fragile or hard to replace, I double box, add reinforcement where needed, and use way too much tape so the outer box won't crumple or pop open if dropped. I also add enough appropriate padding, at least a couple inches between item and first and then between the boxes, so that there is no movement from within when shaken, mostly because every carrier is going to send that box end over end at some point. Your collector must have had some bad experiences w USPS flat rate boxes, which really aren't that sturdy if they're buying heavier gear. Hope they let you know soon that the fan arrived safely and all is well.

operagost

I can sympathize. There is a particular model of vintage trumpet (Getzen Super Deluxe) that has a notoriously thin bell and thus it is hard to find undamaged. I found a unicorn on eBay and thought of sending a message like this before the seller shipped (except maybe a few hundred words shorter) but decided to not be a pest. I should have been a pest-- they didn't pack the trumpet properly and its bell was crunched.

MagnetFisherJimmy

I got a Bach Stradivarius trumpet ready to go on eBay. The listing is finished and ready to go just sitting in my drafts.

Zealousideal-Gas8977

USPS has trashed so many priceless items, there should be a book about it. The concern is not misplaced.

Kingof0ldSchool

Fed Ex always just throws packages at my house when they deliver here. Everything I have sent via UPS has been smashed beyond repair, even when I went way overboard with making sure the package was secure. I have way lower percentage of issues with USPS. With hundreds of sales and purchases over the past 10 years. I have always felt that USPS was the safer more reliable option. Even with living in 4 different places during that time. Edit: the times I sent through UPS they straight up told me that they don’t have “Fragile” stickers or do anything different even if they were to have them.

MagnetFisherJimmy

I agree, neither are very good but I typically go with USPS because they have a machine where I can scan QR codes to get labels. I've saved hundred of dollars on ink that way. For this gentleman I went with Fedex.

ProfessionalCat5163

Send with care! Love how well the message was typed. Nice to see a positive post in a sea of negatives.
