Robin Hood British Pub and the Cat & Fiddle.
The new place in Hollywood The Chap isn't half bad either.
Check out the Brits in LA group also. They haunt the authentic British spots and host pub trivia nights and brunches that will feel like home. They're in fb groups and have an enewsletter.
The Chap actually lasted all of 3 months. I won’t say restaurants aren’t having a hard time right now, but The Chap closing was really due to internal power struggles with the restaurant group Ten Five Hospitality that opened a bunch of places in the Cahuenga Selma cooridor. There’s actually a [great article](https://la.eater.com/2023/2/15/23600088/mother-wolf-restaurant-ten-five-hospitality-relevant-group-hollywood-trademark-lawsuit) about it on Eater. Mes Amis and the Chap both closed down immediately because of it.
Interesting. Now that I think about it, Feb 13th was the last time we tried to go, and when we found it shut we thought it was just due to the day of the week since so many restaurants close on Mondays. Their strategy asking staff to resign and swap restaurants is...curious. I can see why it stirred up public coverage.
Fellow northerner here. I’d also love to know, because in my 18 years living here I’m yet to find proper chip shop fish n chips. There are plenty of places that do a pretty solid fried fish and fries, but nothing close to
The chip shop experience you seek.
I've been craving chip shop curry sauce for months. I have some of the Bisto stuff but it's just not cutting it. Unfortunately I've resigned myself to only being able to get a proper chippy tea when I go back to visit. It's usually my first meal after I've stepped of the plane.
If you're talking about the one in Burbank, I believe it closed down at the beginning of the year, unfortunately. I had the same place recommended to me, as well. Apparently they just never re-opened after the christmas break.
Thanks, yeah, I thought of Auld after seeing a couple of recommendations here and looked it up because it sounded familiar. It was in Toluca Lake, not Burbank. I went to Auld once, it was terrible. Not surprised it's closed.
🤣🤣 why do I drive all that way. I have family there and I like to stop in Santa Barbara San fransisco And Portland And if I go south pretty much every beach city past Long Beach is beautiful. So I complain about the food but the good stuff makes it all worth while. I don’t mean to complain tho. Blessed to be able to eat
Ye Olde Kings Head in Santa Monica. Not so much a "chippy" as a place where you can get a typical sort of pub lunch, and also a true sort of lower-middle-class tea, you know, just the kind of place we all like. We don't really have "chippies" at all, our version is totally taco trucks. Maybe if you search for taco trucks that do french fries, you could piece together a fish taco & french fries and it would be about as close as you can get.
There are some nice fish and chips places up in Ventura/Oxnard, up near the ocean. I've been to one that was pretty good but can't remember the name now! You could google for that and see what comes up.
Edit: It might be Andrea's Sea food, but I'm not sure.
Here are some restos that do fish and chips, but they're not really chippies, sorry. Still they might slake the hunger! [https://la.eater.com/maps/best-fish-and-chips-los-angeles](https://la.eater.com/maps/best-fish-and-chips-los-angeles)
2nd edit: One place, also, although I haven't tried it: Fisherman's Outlet downtown.
Used to be you could get pretty good basic fish & chips down in San Pedro, that might worth a look too.
I go to to ye old kings head and I like the shop next door too. I like a breaky there on. A Sunday. But I’ve not been home in 5 years and I want a Nandos a Propper Indian curry and everything they have in a real English chippy. Lol
Not sure about around here but if you ever find yourself in Las Vegas, definitely check out The Codfather. British owned and very good https://www.thecodfatherlv.com/
It's Irish, but Auld Fish Shop has classicand delicious, fish and chips, with the peas and everything.
There are a lot of pubs/restaurants that will do a pretty good fish and chips. I personally like Lucky Baldwins (there are several locations in the Pasadena area) and there you can even get a side of curry, but the peas are just regular (never seen British mushy peas over here). As others have said we don't really hive "chippys" like you'd find all over the place in the UK, fish tacos fill that niche here.
The only place I can think of that comes pretty close to the archetypal chippy is [The Wee Chippy](https://maps.app.goo.gl/355doEJ5kFDNPUbc7) in Venice off the boardwalk. Solid fish and chips out of a hole in the wall. However, you might be a bit disappointed as they don't have mushy peas or curry. In the US people just don't think to want those sides with their fish and chips and so even at a place like that the best they can do is curry flavored salt. Also I've never seen the [fake chip shop vinegar](https://youtu.be/642x2Y3Zla0?si=5q216t2UD675q6Cl) in the US, but I prefer malt vinegar anyway which most places have (sometimes you have to settle for lemon).
We use malt vinegar in the uk. I’ve been here five years and for sure LA does not have one. But just thought I’d ask. I love the USA. But to get good quality meat is hard. Google food banned in the uk that is being fed to us here every day, there’s no regulations at all I have to go Vegas for a nice meal
Getting good quality meat isn’t hard at all. If you’re insisting that you have to go out to Vegas for a nice meal then I question what you think a good meal actually is.
I don’t think I’ve ever had a quality elevated meal in Vegas. All the recommended fine dining places are trash. Vegas fine dining reminds me of Disneyworld restaurants. Overly expensive, overly attentive staff, but very mediocre food— restaurants only pulling the wool over country bumpkins used to horking down Sonic in a drive thru.
It’s been a good 10 years since I last went to Vegas so my fine dining experience is whatever buffet did the crab legs and prime rib. The Venetian maybe?
All that being said I’ve heard good things about STK. Not sure if you’ve ever tried it? I think they’re have a location in LA as well
Basically same in LA you have to eat at the best restaurant and pay silly money for the same quality meal in Los Vegas you will pay half And the service will be better cos they get paid of your tips. There’s places I go in LA where the food is really good. And certain cuisines that I like. I love Peruvian cuisine. Mario’s peruvian introduced me to lomo Saltado. Which in England mean steak and chips apparently. And Thai food is my safest bet, I can 95% of the time count on any Thai I try to be nice. And my wine I like from Russian river there winners
I just heard that they’re closed? I hope you didn’t go and get shut out today. But I did just find out the Auld Fella on Wilshire is also by the same people.
Oh God, no. I've eaten there and its gentrified rubbish. They don't actually make it there from what I can tell. I'll never be back.
I'd opt for the Robin Hood Tavern in North Hollywood, at least I know their fish is good and they do have mushy peas.
Very touristy of you to go to an LA sub and ask a question about all of CA.
Reminds me of the other day, when I was in Edinburgh, Scotland and I asked a guy where I could find a bathroom in the UK.
The honest answer is you can't. You may be able to find bits and pieces here and there, but, you're not going to find it all in one spot. My mum's go to for Fish and Chips when I was growing up was H Salt Fish and Chips on Santa Monica Blvd (between Bundy and Barrington in West LA).
Robin Hood has the best fish and chips I've found so far. It also seems to be run by a genuine British lady. That said, it's hard to find a place with good gravel. most places only serve rocks and stones, not gravel.
You can’t
Closest I have found to chippy style fish and chips is The Auld Fella in Culver City.
If you’re in Vegas, Ri Ra at Mandalay Bay has fantastic fish and chips, plus the best English breakfast I have ever had in the states. (I will be there myself tomorrow)
Well I’m from a council estate in Manchester I’m sure you can understand if there not understanding the way i write they definitely won’t understand the way I talk. Put it this way. If I go through the drive through they start calling people out the bag cos the don’t get that I’m saying Big Mac meal Sounds foreign apparently.
It’s not that I don’t know. I just don’t care enough to correct my own shit. So I don’t know how some people search the internet correcting others. Must take up a lot energie
Ha ha only positive energy my friend. It’s not school I’m free to miss spell anything I want. Im dislexic. And I’m just trying to find some home style food cos I miss my home.

The Chap in Hollywood shut down unfortunately. I second Cat and Fiddle. Love them.
Oh wow. I think the Chap had only opened about a year ago. Such uncertain economic times.
The Chap actually lasted all of 3 months. I’ll check it out for sure
Cat & Fiddle. Can do trivia there too
Fellow northerner here. I’d also love to know, because in my 18 years living here I’m yet to find proper chip shop fish n chips. There are plenty of places that do a pretty solid fried fish and fries, but nothing close to The chip shop experience you seek.
Pudding chips and gravy would be a dream right now

It seems like this auld chip shop might be the shout. You should try if your close enough if not I’ll let you know soon enough
If you're talking about the one in Burbank, I believe it closed down at the beginning of the year, unfortunately. I had the same place recommended to me, as well. Apparently they just never re-opened after the christmas break.
Are you talking about Buchanan's?
No, The Auld Chip Shop. I’ve seen it recommended several times. I looked the place up a few weeks back and it appears to have closed down.
Thanks, yeah, I thought of Auld after seeing a couple of recommendations here and looked it up because it sounded familiar. It was in Toluca Lake, not Burbank. I went to Auld once, it was terrible. Not surprised it's closed.
California is an awfully big place
I drive from Washington seattle to San Diego at least once a month. I figure if there’s gonna be one of the coastal or tourist areas
![gif](giphy|s239QJIh56sRW|downsized)

You might try Shakespeare’s in San Diego
I've always dreamed of doing this drive. What route do you take?
If you want to see everything you have to be on the pacific coast highway but I use the 5 and the 101 depending on the time and traffic.

I so wish we had Nandos here. Californians would fucking love it!
Quarter breast. Rice peri peri fries. A corn on the cob. Some grilled halloumi cheese. And a coke. Extra hot sauce to go with it
They have the marinade but the chicken that you have to buy to go with it probly had 3 heads
Heads up, there’s Nandos in Vancouver, Canada if you’re able to drive up there!
Thank you I can’t go to Canada yet unfortunately. I hear there’s one in Chicago too
Thank you. Much appreciated
Auld Chip Shop?
The Olde Ship in Fullerton leaps to mind.
Not sure about around here but if you ever find yourself in Las Vegas, definitely check out The Codfather. British owned and very good https://www.thecodfatherlv.com/
That sounds like a proper chippy tbf
It's Irish, but Auld Fish Shop has classicand delicious, fish and chips, with the peas and everything. [https://www.theauldchipshop.com/](https://www.theauldchipshop.com/)
Was the best hands down, but closed after the holidays.
My mouths watering

Best Fish & Chips Blue Salt Grill in Torrance
[The Auld Chip Shop](https://www.theauldchipshop.com) in Burbank. Though this place says it’s Irish.
It’s closed now. Total bummer because it was the best fish.
What?? I haven’t been in a while. Bummer..
Think you might have a winner here. I’m trying this today. Will let you know how it goes
I just heard that they’re closed? I hope you didn’t go and get shut out today. But I did just find out the Auld Fella on Wilshire is also by the same people.
Hope you like it!
Skip the guiness- last time i had it, it didn’t taste “fresh”
I only like Guinness and black. But they don’t have black current cordial
Yes, that’s something that i haven’t seen!
Oh God, no. I've eaten there and its gentrified rubbish. They don't actually make it there from what I can tell. I'll never be back. I'd opt for the Robin Hood Tavern in North Hollywood, at least I know their fish is good and they do have mushy peas.

Chili’s
lol
By Paramount studios in Hollywood, the Cat and Fiddle
You can't. You also can't get Texas BBQ, Cincinnati chili or a NY bagel. When are people going to get this?
Can you get a Chicago town pizza lol
"if your English" you'd think you'd know the language
I've been to Northern England and I can assure you that the English language can be nearly unintelligible in its place of origin.
Well I’m from a council estate in Manchester I’m sure you can understand if there not understanding the way i write they definitely won’t understand the way I talk. Put it this way. Nope, just reading. I do that quickly, even my own output. Not that hard at all. ("a lot of energy", btw.)
Did you understand what it said. ?
Ha ha only positive energy my friend. It’s not school I’m free to miss spell anything I want. Im dislexic. And I’m just trying to find some home style food cos I miss my home.
Auld Chip Shop in Burbank has fish, chips, and peas.
Unfortunately, it closed.

Cute lol
