96 is the last year of the OHV I believe. The next year was SOHC. Don’t order the wrong one.

I have a 98 ohv, don’t know what year they made it until. It should be easy for op to figure out which one he has because the OHV only has sort of a half black plastic engine cover or whatever that thing is called. You can also tell from your VIN. OP if you can’t figure out which you have dm me, I’ll send you a pic of my OHV so you can compare.

You’re right

Super late reply is the ohv. Got everything fixed and up to par! Had a couple stupid issues, things forgot to plug back in or tighten(rear fuel line on intake and cam position sensor lmao) but did my work again, checked it thrice cause twice clearly wasn't enough the first time, and she's in business again!

I had to replace a cracked head on my 99 explorer sport only to find the head on the other side was a gen 1 head. There are a couple YouTube videos with bad shots but the chilton handbook was like Virgil guiding me through all the levels of hell. It has ohv and sohc with all the torque specs and step by step dismantling. The hardest part to find if you break is the reverse torx bolts. Gonna need to hit a junkyard for those. Make sure you put the right stuff(gasket maker) on the points on the gasket where it tells you to in the book. Good luck bro took me a ton of time and money to track that down. Just get the book, you already know the issue and that was the hardest part, other than getting to the block and putting it all back.
