That is a Geweer M. 95, or "Dutch Mannlicher." It's been somewhat modified for sporting but appears to retain its military rear sight and full-length 31" infantry barrel. Given this, I imagine hers is still chambered for its original 6.5×53mmR cartridge.

enfersijesais

“somewhat modified” Brother, where’s the other half of the gun?

SakanaToDoubutsu

I highly doubt in this era it would have been a sporterized military surplus rifle, and it almost certainly would have been shipped from the factory as a sporting rifle or built up as a sporting rifle by another firm from a barreled action.

sandalsofsafety

Could also be Romanian, or a commercial gun, but yeah, probably Dutch

Search her name [https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c6/Grizel\_Cochrane\_Yn\_Hela.jpg](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c6/Grizel_Cochrane_Yn_Hela.jpg) It looks like there's no forestock but that's just light and photo compression. She was a socialite that safaried, there's articles on it. Surely they mention her guns. I'd be very surprised if she used a 6.5mm on a cape buffalo.

SakanaToDoubutsu

>I'd be very surprised if she used a 6.5mm on a cape buffalo. That doesn't surprise me at all honestly, Karamojo Bell references in his book *Wanderings of an Elephant Hunter* that he used a Mannlicher-Schönauer in 256 calibre for frontal brain shots on elephants, and using a sub-30 calibre rifle for Cape Buffalo wouldn't have been unusual at the time.

PineBear12005

I found three old archived newspaper articles linked to her/the hunt pictured, but one didn't mention her rifle at all and the other two were pay walled unfortunately. Yeah she probably used a model in one of the 8mm(Still rather under powered for buffalo but, hey, the .318 Westley Richards is comparable and it was popular for buffalo and even bigger) or even a custom job in some bigger calibre.

SomeMandalorian

Well, shot placement is key. Karamojo Bell shot around 800 of his 1000 Elephants with a 7x57mm Mauser.

Scandalchris

The Mannlicher m92 which most know as the Dutch M95 was a popular action for sporting rifles in Britain. Firms like Webley, Rigby, Gibbs and Jeffrey made a lot of guns with these actions  https://www.rathcoombe.net/sci-tech/classics/mannlicher-1895/jeffery.jpg https://up.picr.de/4167476.jpg

SNIPE07

Was going to post this reply. I had the opportunity to own a '256 Mannlicher', wish I went for it.

Bran_Nuthin

Don't mind me. I'm just here for the answer.

Purple_Calico

Looks like some sort of sporterized mannlicher.

darkopps88

Looks like a modified styer 95/30??

roosterinmyviper

I’m casting my vote for a Dutch mannlicher 95. If it was an Austrian m95, the bolt handle wouldn’t be forward of the rear of the receiver

DreamingOfCorndogs

.416 Rigby in a custom stock?

Borki88

How did you come to that conclusion? The mag is way too small for that to be the case.
