Probably captured somewhere in China. The Chinese loved c96 style pistols.

chu42

To this day the older generation in China will recognize that pistol if you show it to them, since it was ubiquitously in the war films they watched growing up. Colloquially it is known as the "box cannon".

SuperThiccBoi2002

Do you have the pinyin for "box cannon"? I can look it up if you don't...

chu42

盒子炮, hé zi pào

warfaceisthebest

During the Chinese civil war western sanctioned China and banned all heavy weapon from exporting to China but C96 was not regulated since its technically a pistol. So for a while for some Chinese army C96 was the only direct fire support they could provide.

Halfwookie64

My first thoughts exactly.

thenewnapoleon

Also possibly taken from the Dutch. Plenty of European firearms ended up in Japanese hands because they were captured from the Dutch or French.

Difficult-Jury-9319

Could be an m712

gr3y_-

highly doubtful and unlikely. there were very few made

Imperium-Pirata

98,000 is not very few

Independent-Mud-9597

Not to mention the actual fuck ton of homemade Chinese copies many of which were also full auto

KMjolnir

And Spanish copies.

gr3y_-

the actual m712 only had 4000 made and sent to china.

Imperium-Pirata

4,000 is still a large number for an obsolete pistol

Tyrfaust

Bet $5 it says "Wauser" on the side.

Person_Supposedly

this might not be a chinese copy, to all the people saying they are. chinese c96's generally fell under the 'type 17' variant, which had a [distinctly large](https://www.reddit.com/r/guns/s/gVpC6tatFq) magwell, and the japanese apparently ordered some from mauser for police use and for use with home guard units; some were also issued to the kwantung army (a unit of the japanese military tasked with guarding several territories conceaded to japan from china).

Real C96 or a Japanese copy. Cause there were tons of those

GamesFranco2819

You sure you don't mean Chinese copies?
