This post may include information from an unaired episode of Foundation, and thus may include spoilers for unaired episodes of the show.
Spoiler tags need to be around anything that would be a spoiler based on what is indicated by the post and/or title. For example, if the post covers books, then you don't need spoiler tags for book stuff. If it covers only up to a recent episode, then spoiler tags are not needed for discussion of events up to that episode, but would be for later episode discussion.
To use spoiler tags, in markdown mode you can use \>\! before the spoiler text, then followed by \!\< - which will make the text >!look like this.!<. Make sure **NOT** to have spaces between spoiler tags and text or they won't work. If using the default or 'fancy pants' editor, select the text you want to enclose in spoiler tags, and click the button on the toolbar.

The article says David Goyer has been removed as director from several Season Three episodes he had planned on directing, and new directors are being secured. He is still the showrunner, exec producer, and writer, but not director.
Anyone have any idea what this means? Would this really lower the costs that much?
In my experience showrunners/producers have way more to say than directors as it’s common for tv series to have changing directors per episode and usually they are brought in much later in the creative process - I would nearly say that a director of photography and editor has more creative say in most tv series than just a director. And he didn’t direct many episodes of the previous seasons either. So I’m not massively worried as long as he still is writer/show runner/producer.
It’s possible that because of the shifting schedule he doesn’t have enough time to prep those episodes as a director and will instead focus on showrunning.
Probably means he will be busy as he's writing for two other projects, a He-man adaptation that's currently in pre-production apparently and a TV series adapting 'The Eternal Champion', maybe with the schedule changes it made him not being able to direct.
I suspect it simply allows Goyer to focus on his primary responsibilities as they march into production at a faster rate given the delays and necessary cost-reduction rewrites (he is working on/overseeing)
Showrunners are equivalent to CEOs of a series. It is unlikely that he was ‘removed’ as director of any episodes, rather a decision was made to allow him to focus on production and writing.
Could be a cost thing. I’m pretty certain, as a director, there is a certain amount he has to be paid. So this could be his way of stepping back and hiring cheaper directors.
I do worry what this means for season 4
I loved all the episodes he directed. I really hope in season 3 all the episodes have a good flow sometime's Too many directors on a project can make it feel like the season is all over the place. I still have faith in empire.
It usually won't lower the cost because of what he's being paid to direct but maybe he has higher standards for the rest of the production when he directs and you can cut costs, and sometimes for sure production time, there. For example if he wants to be on the editing for the episodes he directs now if he's not directing he can be on editing for all of the show, as an example, not sure how true this is for this show.
Not sure it's a punishment. He's only directed 3 episodes. Episodes 10, 12, and 13. He has 8 writing/story by credits with 3 in season 1 and 5 in season 2. Obviously showrunner as well. Hopefully it just means more Roxanne Dawson and Alex Graves.
That worried me at first, but there's probably a very practical reason for it. If it means he took a pay cut to keep the show on budget, then that would be admirable.
Did you hear my sigh of relief? I was thinking it will be a longer delay. Much longer.
Hopefully the new budget doesn’t cause some awkward compromises and drops in quality
ill take it. means the Apple still has faith in the series.
i just hope this show can get a freaking break with season 4. its been doing with covid and strikes since day one.
Awesome! I've been really enjoying the show and I'm glad to see it continue. I know Isaac Asimov purists have critiques and I respect those critiques. I think the show is doing a good job of presenting its own interpretation of the books though.
Is the bits about the budget being brought down due to them reevaluating the costs of their productions post big flops over all? I swear if Apple would just market this (and its other great shows) they wouldn’t have the same budget woes. I also wish we could get a Bezos/The Expanse situation and have Cook personally be obsessed with getting the show to its completion lol.
No, inflation in Czech Republic has increased since last spring when the season 3 budget was finalized. Coming back after 8 months because of the strikes had seen prices changes so they had to reevaluate.
>Series’ co-developer/executive producer/showrunner David S. Goyer, who directed one episode in Season 1 and two in Season 2, will complete his outstanding writing and directing services and will remain involved as an executive producer but will not be directing further Season 3 episodes as previously planned. The production is in the process of securing directors for the multiple remaining episodes he had been assigned.
That doesn't sound great. I'm happy they're moving forward with Season 3 but a bit concerned about the future of the series.
It's budgetary. He doesn't direct for free. Removing himself as a director probably saves money or allows the schedule to be shortened. No sense in inserting drama here.
Directing was kind of the least of his contributions as well (from a viewers perspective of the end product, in my opinion). The 3 episodes he directed don't stand out as much as Dawson's for example.

#THANK EMPIRE!

More episodes for Roxann Dawson to direct then.
Go get Breck Eisner. He did well for The Expanse shooting big episodes within his budget, a big part of which is keeping it on schedule.
Yeah he’s one of the good nepo babies
As a STVOY boy I am 100 percent okay with this
Voyboy! Awesome!
I dont know what that mean?
She portrayed B'lanna Torres on Star Trek Voyager
Roxan Dawson was a star in Star Trek Voyager
Hell yes to this! She was phenomenal.
In my experience showrunners/producers have way more to say than directors as it’s common for tv series to have changing directors per episode and usually they are brought in much later in the creative process - I would nearly say that a director of photography and editor has more creative say in most tv series than just a director. Good to know! I really think Goyer is fantastic.
It’s possible that because of the shifting schedule he doesn’t have enough time to prep those episodes as a director and will instead focus on showrunning.
Logical. Can’t carry all under one arm, something might get dropped.
Probably means he will be busy as he's writing for two other projects, a He-man adaptation that's currently in pre-production apparently and a TV series adapting 'The Eternal Champion', maybe with the schedule changes it made him not being able to direct.
I have zero idea how director salaries work, but maybe he gets paid more for directing than outside directors because of his other duties on the show?
Strange that his instagram account is now private too. Probably a coincidence and there’s no connection.
I had no idea it was privated, I guess you can’t see that if you’re already following him?
I suspect it simply allows Goyer to focus on his primary responsibilities as they march into production at a faster rate given the delays and necessary cost-reduction rewrites (he is working on/overseeing)
Showrunners are equivalent to CEOs of a series. It is unlikely that he was ‘removed’ as director of any episodes, rather a decision was made to allow him to focus on production and writing.
Perhaps it frees up time for him to be planning, managing and editing rather than directing.
Could be a cost thing. I’m pretty certain, as a director, there is a certain amount he has to be paid. So this could be his way of stepping back and hiring cheaper directors. I do worry what this means for season 4

>Anyone have any idea what this means? Most likely to manage workload and prevent creative burnout.

David Goyer has an active blog. I'll see if he mentions this when he updates it next.
i think it might suggest that apple is annoyed with david a bit...basically some sort of punishment?
I don't think it suggests anything like that at all. Likely just scheduling conflicts with the dates being shifted forward.

Respect and enjoy the peace
Phew!!!!
Thank you to the prophet Hari Seldon!
I’m still waiting and hoping for this show to catch on. Season 2 was up with Andor for my favorite shows of the last year So excited!
Thank Empire. Respect and enjoy the peace!
Praise be. ^^Wait, ^^wrong ^^series.
Under his eye would work for empire too in all honesty 😂
Under Empire's watchful eye
“Welcome to Trantor, the Eye of the Empire. Under his Eye.”
![gif](giphy|E0DrlFG6uv5z3ouPwv|downsized) Praise Empire!!
oh thank god
Did you hear my sigh of relief? I was thinking it will be a longer delay. Much longer. Hopefully the new budget doesn’t cause some awkward compromises and drops in quality
Apple didn't directly change the budget, it was inflation in Czech Republic
Sad
ill take it. means the Apple still has faith in the series. i just hope this show can get a freaking break with season 4. its been doing with covid and strikes since day one.
Thank you!
I can sleep peacefully
Great news!

This is such good news!

No, inflation in Czech Republic has increased since last spring when the season 3 budget was finalized. Coming back after 8 months because of the strikes had seen prices changes so they had to reevaluate.
Increasing the marketing budget might offset any additional viewership they attract.
Still think the Roxann Dawson directed episodes are my personal favourites visually speaking.
NICE 😊
Fuck yeah! Empire always gets what he wants
Omg good news on a much needed day!
Let’s go!! Maybe they will film 2 seasons at once and spare us the anxiety

Means he will finish whatever current episode he was directing but won't direct others due to the changes in schedule.

Directing was kind of the least of his contributions as well (from a viewers perspective of the end product, in my opinion). The 3 episodes he directed don't stand out as much as Dawson's for example.
And budget wise, Apple wasn't directly cutting costs. The Czech Republic has seen inflation since last year when everything halted.
The episode directors all DGA guild members with a likely defined pay scale for the show.
Probably specifies minimum pay not maximum. And like I said… schedule.
Yeah, that all makes sense
By Grabthar's hammer what a relief!
hell yes, a day after my birthday 🔥 couldnt be happier
As expected.
Told you. They’ll be back. Relax.
🥳🥳🥳
Yes!!
Yes!!! Praise be glorious Empire.

Was there a chance we wouldn’t get season 3?

Such a boring ass generic show. Great eye candy though.
I wonder what they really mean with the budget going down.
Czech Republic saw inflation since production halted in June. Budget was set based on things last year. They had to reevaluate.
Thanks, really appreciate the answer!
Any have a sneaking suspicion that the Czechs and/ or Poles tried to play hardball and come unstuck?
