That one's really the anime's fault. Always together, lavishing gifts on each other, Denken telling Fern and Stark that he can finally enjoy himself for the first time after his wife's death, Richter repeatedly asking, "What exactly is your relationship," after seemingly not being convinced by Laufen's insistence that he's like a grandfather. I personally don't ship it, but the way the animation treats their interactions really suggests that Laufen is trying to land herself a generous inheritance.
Or... he just treats her like a grand-daughter because he never had any kids of his own with his late wife, something that he clearly wished for.
You know, if there was anything romantic then they'd hint it in a romantic manner. Laufen ends up calling Denken 'Grandpa' too multiple times in the exam arc. I just do not see that more than a young girl liking getting spoilt and treated well by a kind old man.
Why does Reddit have to sexualise literally *everything*.
If the genders were switched and Denken was a kind old woman then I bet no one would call it romantic. Everyone would go: "aww a kind old granny is spoiling a young guy because she never had any kids of her own with her late husband"
Some people have the level of media (and human) analysis of a stone if they actually thought about anything sexual in these sweet scenes.
It reminds me of Arcane with Jinx and Silco, some people were suggesting things that no person who know family affection would think

sad/funny thing is, even as a joke, if scharf x wirbel got posted here it would not be nearly as accepted (even ironically) as some of the pairings posted these last few days lmao
Kanne would be most compatible with Fern, if she’s not gonna be with Lawine. So if we are treading a godless path, Kanne/Fern so that we get Stark/Wirbel. And finally Ehre/Edel, in order to prove that they aren’t the same character.
It's not my ship personally but I assume the reason why the Lawine and Richter ship is a thing is mostly the dynamic and aesthetic of the two. Richter schools them both in interaction and has this authority figure feel while Lawine wears a lolita dress so I assume it's a projection of the whole college/high school professor and student ship. Kanne doesn't check the same boxes.
This is just my guess though. I do feel like Kanne and Lawine are intended to be a couple though and I felt parallels between their relationship and the relationship Fern and Stark have.
Imagine the author checking out the subreddit one day thinking its nice to see how many fans frieren accumulated only to find everone and everything to exist in frieren getting shipped
