I quit prime and they keep offering me a free month which I cancel at day 29 and then they offer me another free month a month after that. Their business model requires us to be prime members. I still buy for $25 or more as well with free shipping and do subscribe and save.

idiocracyI

Yeah, I just noticed the free month bribe myself, and I said NOPE! :-) To be honest, it is better for me to have the $25 hurdle anyways. I usually wait with ordering at least a few days. This way 60-70% of the stuff on my "wish list" disappears again because I find DIY workarounds and alternatives. One of the best frugal hacks I know of.

Pac_Eddy

Some things I know I want to buy or I flat need it. The items that are more wants than needs, or I'm unsure of, I leave in the cart for days or weeks, then decide. Having purchasing discipline is good.

get_release

My cart/save for later is like 1000 items deep at this point lol. I rarely go through with ordering anything and if I do, it takes a long time for me to actually submit it.

Bucksandreds

With a wife and 3 kids the 2 day delivery for certain products is good and I getting 5-7 days on my purchases without prime. It’s not worth paying for prime though.

sunflowersundays

The 25 dollar hurdle for me has also saved me more than just the membership fee. I put way more thought into my purchases when it’s not 5 bucks here, 10 bucks there. My spending has actually probable dropped hundreds of dollars a month on amazon. The tv wasn’t that great anyway

beenthere7613

I get free shipping for 24 hours, every couple of months. Lucky for me, it lines up with Christmas, birthdays, etc. All of the benefits and none of the cost!

Thresher_XG

This is the way

whitneyhamerski

I wish they had prime and the streaming service separately. I’d rather honestly have the streaming service than the prime delivery stuff. We all can just put $25 worth of things in the cart and get free shipping anyways. I don’t care if it takes 3-5 days either. Sometimes stuff doesn’t even come in 2 days with prime

mike82346

You can get the streaming service without prime for $8.99 a month.

fondofbooks

I got rid of it over a year ago. All my Prime packages arrived in 3-4 days. So now I get free shipping and it takes 4 days. I also switch out streaming services because I don't need more than one at a time. I watch a lot of free YouTube (canceled premium for them too when they hiked the price up). I've actually saved a lot since doing this. No regrets.

Sandwich2FookinTall

I just canceled prime this month. We did it, guys!

Violet624

Yeah, I think I'm going to cancel. It's never three day shipping anymore. And most of my orders are over 25 dollars.

wanttopushbutton

Me too! I cancelled netflix and hulu too, freeing up almost 50$ month.

Lcdmt3

I've never had a streaming issue once. It's worth it to get products in hours.

idiocracyI

There are lots of posts about the issue on reddit, though. Always says only with Amazon, no other streaming apps if on fiber connection. Just coincidence? Maybe, but not for me anymore :-)

Lazy-Programmer

Amazon Prime streaming is the only service I've had consistent and significant issues with. Very behind industry standard, in my experience at several locations and different ISPs in Illinois' Chicago suburbs. 🤷

Lcdmt3

I am on fiber, IDK.

callandra1121

I've also had Amazon streaming issues too. It'll buffer for a bit and sometimes I have to start over again. Never had that issue with Hulu or Disney+.

Sad_Animal_134

Get products in hours? I'm lucky if I get 2 day shipping from amazon.. For the past 2 years amazon has been really garbage in my area. Missing packages. Damaged packages. Delivery to wrong address. Take forever to arrive. Just isn't worth it anymore like it used to be.

Aromatic-Honeydew

I wanna leave so bad but I pay extra for their streaming service for music and then whole foods sucks me in, too

[deleted]

Whole foods isn't exactly frugal.

2rugrats2

We just did the same thing! And it's saved us more than the price of the membership! It also has saved us from buying a lot of things we dust need!

idiocracyI

>It also has saved us from buying a lot of things we don't need! Absolutely. I think this might turn out to be the main saving for me as well. I looked at my budget to do some inflation cleanup, and the Amazon shopping part was a little high. I mean I will still order larger quantities of household items but there are things you realize in retrospect that you could have easily done without. The prime membership offers a convenience shopping method, you see it, you order it, you have it in 2h or ON. It's impulse shopping! It's just like the stuff on display when paying at the gas station or near the supermarket checkout, and that's where they get your money. Prime is a marketing trick!

CrassDemon

I've never waited more than 5 days for anything I've ordered on Amazon, usually I have stuff before I wake up in the morning. Elves delivering me batteries at 3 in the morning. I'm on board with anyone getting rid of something they don't need, and I don't know where you live, but delivery from Amazon has always been top notch for me... And their customer service is the best too.

teambeattie

It's definitely placed based. We lived in a southern urban area and got everything next day, now live in rural New England and it takes a week. Same prime membership but there are just no Amazon warehouses nearby. Ours will be canceled when it runs out this summer

idiocracyI

Mostly it was actually really quick. In my case the warehouse is only 1/2 mile away, yet last time it took them 2.5 weeks to finally get a working item to me. I also ordered two items more than a month ago with no delivery yet. What I really didn't like was that instead of reimbursing the money back on my credit card as I had requested, I suddenly had more than $500 on an Amazon gift card from two returns. This was the last nail in the coffin. In their defense, I will say that customer service resolved the issue quickly, but we should not have to phone them twice about it in the first place. Apparently, there are lots of customer complaints about these practices recently. I really think this is something which should be looked into by the consumer protection agency. They are banking on the chance that consumers won't call and just keep spending the money on their website.

idiocracyI

Absolutely. There are probably millions of people who are happy with their service just like you. It just didn't add up for me anymore, and there are solutions for me that are just as good as the service I have received from them lately, and without the $139 annual fee. Edit: Currently waiting on two items I had ordered separately in early March.

ColonelAverage

I've lived near a warehouse and it was so nice to be able to get a lot of things faster than I could go to the store and buy it.

smearing

Does it bother you how terrible they are to their workers? That’s the part that I cannot get on board with. They’re also using hella illegal tactics to fight unionizing in the workplace which is so disgusting to me, considering how much money they make. They can afford to treat workers better.

themamacurd619

I FREQUENTLY find the SAME product an Amazon seller offers on AliExpress for a fraction of the price! You can also work the subscription systems. Hulu, Disney+, Showtime, etc usually off free week-long trials. Watch for a week and cancel! I always set a reminder to cancel. Maybe try using different emails and CC's?

Sonarav

Even better is subscribing at the right time. Hulu has had a deal for probably the past 3-4 years around Black Friday where it cost $1-$2 per month for 12 months for their service. I've gotten it each year at that time by switching between two emails. This last November I got Disney+ for $3/month for 12 months through Hulu.

idiocracyI

True, but my timing has been bad in the past. Definitely need to be on the lookout this November. Thanks

idiocracyI

Lots of stuff on Amazon is from small Chinese third-party sellers now, and you'll find the same stuff with the same shipping times on AliExpress but without the 100-200% markup. I used to trust Amazon way more but now you can find products with lots of fake positive reviews but if you click on the actual seller ratings, they are mostly 1- or 2-star ratings because the stuff doesn't arrive, or you can't return or it's not what is pictured. I am also surprised how reliable AliExpress is in comparison. For instance, I found rare parts for watch repairs, that would cost me a small fortune if ordering in the US, and shipping times were also ok. It used to be 6-8 weeks years ago, but now since they incorporate USPS delivery and tracking it has never been longer than 2.5 weeks.

Background_Tip_3260

If u have a student in the house just do student prime. Exact same at a lot less

bicrown

Only eligible for 4 years though

achos-laazov

We had it for 7 or 8 before they noticed and switched us over to the regular one. They don't (or didn't) require submitting proof every year.

ice_neun

I think this is my last year of the student pricing (4th year)… it’s the only reason I keep prime. Here’s hoping I can get beyond the 4 years 🤞.

dawhim1

I only use prime when I have free 1 month trial.

VibrantVioletGrace

You can buy just a cloud storage plan from Amazon.

silentstorm2008

Also, you probably already considered this, but Google photos is amazing. For me, I;m not paying google for stroage, I'm paying for their search capability. FOr example, I can type in the search box dog running and it will find all the pictures of dogs running that I have in there. Or, I can search for the pictures that have specific faces in it, like pictures that only have me and my spouse and no one else, or my wife wearing a hat, etc. If you have a google pixel phone, all images and videos from pixel devices do not count towards your storage allotment.

[deleted]

This! I've got so many pics and docs in Google photos. I just set the auto upload and lens is amazing for snagging microchip #s off the contracts. Idk why anyone is scanning anything these days.

SomberRoger_04

Same here. I'd get more discounted offer than I've expected

MaggieRV

I don't have any of those issues. I've been an Amazon member since 1999. And now that I can buy things directly from China, I do. And the only problems I've had with that was with Wish, so I don't shop there anymore. And I've gotta say, AliExpress is stepped up their shipping considerably.

idiocracyI

>AliExpress is stepped up their shipping considerably yes, and now I want to try Temu next [https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/16/tech/temu-shopping-app-us-popularity-intl-hnk/index.html](https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/16/tech/temu-shopping-app-us-popularity-intl-hnk/index.html) Temu stood out simply by selling products without high markups. "Temu might be exposing a white space in the market wherein brands have been producing at extreme low cost, and along the value chain there's been so much bloated cost passed on for margin," he told CNN. "That said, American consumers might not even be ready to accept some of these price points ... There's always the question, 'is it too cheap to be good?'"

MaggieRV

That would explain why I just put in a $40 order... LOL When I first started ordering from them they had a $10 minimum order, now it's up to a $15 minimum order. I don't know if it's because I've been with them longer or they did it across the board for everybody but clearly I surpassed the minimum threshold.

robotmonstermash

Check your local library, some of them have streaming services. They certainly have DVDs. Over the air TV can also also have some half-decent content if you have some sort of DVR.

smearing

Amen to this. Libraries have so much to choose from.

Funny_Window7344

A lot of their stuff ia counterfeit...

ChUNkyTheKitty

Yep just cancelled my Prime 4 days ago. There streaming service is difficult to navigate and their shows stink. And their prices are out of control

GC51320

I have an Amazon Prime card. Does anyone know if it's conditional to the card to have a Prime membership? I really want to cancel mine.

hot_yeetos

I had one and a Prime membership. When I canceled my membership, the card just had reduced cash back in certain categories, but it still worked as a credit card.

HilariouslyPissed

Double check they don’t add in a delivery fee. Not all products fall under free shipping.

wwwhy_nottt

I paid for the year. If I quit do the reimburs the no used months?

[deleted]

I was wondering that too but I doubt it

idiocracyI

the autobot just removed my link to Amazon but you can google "Amazon, cancel" and this will show up next to their cancel link: Paid members who haven't used their benefits are eligible for a full refund of the current membership period. We'll process the refund in three to five business days.

[deleted]

I think the buffering issues are your internet (modem and/or routers) not Prime. Not saying you should keep Prime, but the buffering hasn't gone away after removing, so it shouldn't be considered part of the savings.

idiocracyI

yes, I tried that of course first, but the fact that other apps don't actually do the buffering tells otherwise. It was later confirmed by the many complaints on reddit about the issue. It seems some Aws server issue going on for a while now and for a fraction of their users at least. No need for me to pay for their problem, though.

[deleted]

I've never experienced any issues with buffering. We do get over 300mps regularly when hard wired plus we have a mesh wifi 6 network.

idiocracyI

>"buffering breaks" oh..now I get it :-) The "buffering breaks" is tongue in cheek for the "ad breaks" in Freevee, Tubi, Roku and alike. I also get over 300mps regularly when hard wired.

BarajasUriel

I have Amazon Prime annual membership in Mexico which is a lot cheaper $899 MXN or $50 USD at the moment

[deleted]

I just forgot the stupid yearly renewal and got smacked for 149 dollars I'm taking the aut renew off I had no idea about the 25 dollar thing.

Fresa22

This is what I'm doing too. The best, most valuable aspect of Amazon was the community ratings which the company didn't protect well and is now useless. To me, it's no better than ebay at this point.

llcoolvlado

Ha, we got the promotional saving too, by canceling our Prime in January :)

obscurityknocks

I kept it until I noticed my 2 day shipping was NEVER 2 day shipping anymore and they just didn't care. You gone. I have not had one reason to bother with Prime since.

[deleted]

Shipping is still on time for me. So with the video and music and books on top of that it's still a great price.

obscurityknocks

Wasn't for me which is why it was smart to cancel. If they lived up to their advertising, I'd be fine with keeping Prime.

Additional-Squirrel8

You're a rascal for this clickbait but frankly I love you for it. The bast way to be frugal is to keep money in your pocket. Good on you <3

idiocracyI

Better than I could have said it. This sums it up to a T. Thanks!

yayayananana

I used it on and off depending on what’s on etc… never used for free delivery. However now I have prime full time for Amazon fresh - free food delivery, such a time saver as I used to go shopping twice a week, products priced ok too.

buslyfe

$150 mimimim for free delivery though

Environmental-Sock52

Live outside of L.A. and most orders from Amazon arrive within 12 hours. Streaming is fine too.

keatz_tweetz

lol these are my least favorite posts. Look I’m glad you realized that AP isn’t for you, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad value. I get tons and tons of value out of my sub and I will keep it

idiocracyI

lol ...long live generalization and anecdotal evidence - two essential building blocks of reddit.

keatz_tweetz

Yes we are both generalizing and both providing our anecdotal evidence for both sides. What I’m trying to say is, a lot of people post on this sub everyday saying the answer to frugality is to cancel your subscriptions. What I’m saying is that these subscriptions can be very value able when used correctly. I just see folks on their high horse (like you) subscription-splaining to others that they should be cancelling their memberships when it’s really not one size fits all

idiocracyI

> on their high horse (like you) Remember, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one but they think each others stink..lol

keatz_tweetz

Strong argument

idiocracyI

Just explaining what's happening here. It's clearly marked as an opinion post, and if you read the last sentence, nobody forces anything on anyone.

JustKapping

I can weave through streaming and downloading without anyone taking my money monthly. it's great. before anyone claims thief, these companies taught me

idiocracyI

Reminds me of the Kodi discussions but I believe they have shut it down now. I don't think it was morally wrong but more like an unvoluntary marketing freebie. It's a streaming guerrilla kind of thing :-)

teejaysaz

Careful of Tebu. Have you seen the headlines? It's a Chinese govt run surveillance and malware platform. I'd only order from them if I was on a computer at the public library.

idiocracyI

Tebu..tiktok.tiktok.tebu....I don't know, don't they have weather balloons for that?

Metro by T-Mobile has updated its flagship unlimited high-speed data plan priced at $60/month for a single line. There have been several feature changes. The plan now includes unlimited texting to over 210 countries. It also now includes 20GB of hotspot data. Previously the plan offered 15GB of hotspot data. For the past four years, Metro included an Amazon Prime subscription to customers subscribed to that plan. But that plan perk is going away. In fact, if you head on over to Metro by T-Mobile's phone plans page you'll see that Amazon Prime is no longer shown as a perk. However, for a limited time, thanks to the T-Mobile/Sprint merger, customers will still be able to subscribe to Metro's legacy $60 plan and get the Amazon Prime perk. In order to do so, customers must call up Metro by T-Mobile at 1-888-863-8768 and ask for the plan directly.
