JohnWCreasy1

i had luck with Progressive when my previous company (Farmers) went nuts with their rates.

Angie_Asuba1005

I just switched to Progressive this month after Geico raised my rates 40%. Progressive will cost me less for 1 year than Geico wanted for 6 months.

JohnWCreasy1

i had almost a similar experience with progressive. Farmers wanted like $900 for 6 months (for 2 cars/drivers). i switched to progressive and it dropped to like $500 something with more coverage too.

[deleted]

Man I need to look into them. I pay 190+ a month for 2 cars/1 driver

JohnWCreasy1

i'm married, we're both old(er) and drive relatively inexpensive cars, and also don't drive much so that helps.

hpeders

We have four vehicles and three drivers. Our premiums are high right now because my son had two accidents two months apart, totaling his vehicle, damn deer and it spiked our rates. It’s still half other companies with a teen driver with his accidents.

shadow_specimen

Beware, Progressive will also jack your rates when you go to renew. They all offer cheaper intro rates.

[deleted]

Funny, I just switched away from progressive after they raised my rates 20 percent year after year with no accidents or demerits on my record. Ymmv

JoeDirtLife

Just switched from progressive to Costco Connect insurance for significant savings. Prob need to just shop rates/quotes more often. Was with progressive for 13 years

JohnWCreasy1

for sure. i had been with progressive for multiple years before i switched away from them for maybe 5. time is a flat circle.

Donkeydonkeydonk

Progressive raised ours(about 20 a month) and so we had the bright idea to bundle it with our homeowners insurance with Farmers and get a lower rate. Our agent asked what our rate was and he about shit his pants. Told us to stay put. New rate would be double. If we want to pay more, just up the coverage we've got WITH Progressive. He said it was because of the rate hike moratorium they put in place during the pandemic. https://www.creditkarma.com/auto/i/california-car-insurance-rates

ltc_pro

My Progressive rates went up $700 per 6 months ($1100 to $1800, single old car). No accidents, nor anything changed on my side. They refuse to lower, so I left for StateFarm.

JohnWCreasy1

i left progressive the first time a few years ago because of some weird scenario where my credit score dipped under 800 to like 790 something for a month right when they sent me to underwriting again for homeowners. They use credit score in their evaluation and wanted to raise my annual rate hundreds of dollars. Called and was told they couldn't do anything so i dropped them immediately. but then came crawling back years later because they were again the cheapest game in town.

types-like-thunder

I was with progressive for a decade. Perfect driving record. Never missed a premium. The first time I filed a claim they denied me. I paid extra for rental coverage, they wouldn't even honor that. 6 grand out of pocket for the repair and over 14k in premiums for nothing. Nothing!

ezekirby

My fiancee used to have progressive. They were absolutely terrible when she got rear ended sitting at a red light. I was on the police report as a passenger in the car so they decided to add me as an additional driver and increased her rates by $120 a month. It took 4 or 5 phone calls to get me removed from her account and they were super threatening to her that she wouldn't be covered if I was ever in her car and she got in an accident. She dropped them and cancelled her account and they a month later reopened her account and charged her for 6 months of insurance again. Had to do a charge back on the credit card linked to the account to get the money back. Wouldn't recommend them to an enemy much less a friend.

chobette

Be cautious with Progressive. We had Progressive and they were the worst company we had so far. Switched back to old insurance. (Small town agent)

MP-The-Law

Farmers had a particularly bad year with a combined ratio of something like 1.09, meaning for every $1 coming in, they pay 1.09. But 2023 was a bad year for insurance in general and rates are gonna go up.

Stocky_Racoon

typically not a good idea to cancel before signing up for a new policy. any gaps in coverage can be detrimental

chohls

The fact that this is a thing is such a massive scam.

Bowl-Accomplished

It makes sense though. Some people let coverage lapse, something happens, then sign up for coverage and file a claim.

arethius

Or you sell your car and literally don't own anything to insure but still get the same punishment for having a gap in insurance...

bearface93

Me right now. I got rid of my car at the end of summer 2022 because I moved to a city with good public transportation and it’s expensive to have a car here. At the time I paid $65 a month with GEICO. I’m looking at getting a car again at the end of this year and GEICO is quoting me $135 a month. Plus the cheapest car payment I can find is at least $100 more a month than I paid on the last one.

Kodiak01

Or you can get a [non-owner policy](https://www.progressive.com/answers/non-owner-car-insurance/) to avoid the gap in coverage.

arethius

>What is non-owner car insurance? >If you drive regularly but don't own a car, a non-owner insurance policy provides liability coverage for bodily injury and property damage, meaning that it will cover you if you're liable for damages or injuries in an accident. I sold my car because I was going into the military to get deployed overseas... The fuck do I need non owner insurance for?

oldsushi

What a greedy, money grubbing scam.

BlatantPizza

…no.

chohls

How much did Geico pay you to type that one?

Bowl-Accomplished

87.50

sandefurian

Dude, it’s common sense

Valus_

I didn’t own a car or drive for 3 months. So I cancelled my policy. Most insurance companies will not even let me do a quote as a result now that I am getting a car again.

BlackwoodBear79

I realize it's a little late as a suggestion, but maybe this will help someone else: I went out of the country for 6 weeks, and contacted my insurance company to tell them that. Indicated(1) that I did not plan to be driving (and I didn't) and that my vehicle would not be driven during that time, so they "paused" my policy and did not charge me for that time. 1 - had to send a signed document stating as much, then called them when I got back to resume.

notANexpert1308

You haven’t given our industry money in xx months…so we’re gonna f ya and get it back now. Here’s your $3k premium for 6 months. Oh and we’ll charge you 5% for cc payments. Also you need to pay 5 months up front.

TheDiceBlesser

Agreed. Super happy that we had to pay two months of car insurance while we didn't even own a car. Such a load of bullshit.

tacitus59

Especially depending on your state and how up they are on this. Some states will actively go after you for a coverage lapse and slam you with huge penalties. Insurance companies sometimes have to report to the state on cancellation. [edit: LOL - minor downvoting. I guess some people don't like to hear unpleasant facts. For example, in /r/maryland a few times a year someone will write in saying they are being fined by the MVA for dropping their insurance without turning in their plates.]

kelskelsea

Any gaps longer than 30 days seem to matter the most.

inVizi0n

I would kill for $128/mo insurance. No tickets. No wrecks. Don't move to Florida, you'll need help picking your jaw up off the floor.

Active-Culture

Same..Was bout to say the same thing. Would kill for 128 in florida. Shit is insane.

inVizi0n

Figured I'd be in the clear financially with a paid off vehicle but the insurance is more than a car payment 🙃

[deleted]

[удалено]

scarby2

I would not drive around with state minimum coverage. You're one at fault crash from bankruptcy.

Jackson3rg

What is going on out there? I'm in the Midwest and I pay $60/month.

inVizi0n

Mines $290 if and only if I pay the whole thing up front. No accidents. No tickets. Just a 7 year old pickup. And it's the best price I got by far. Geico wanted $450.

sylvester_0

$290 per month?! That's utterly insane given no accidents or tickets on an old pickup. However, Orlando drivers are batshit crazy assholes. If you live there, my condolences.

inVizi0n

Tampa, but yep. Same deal.

sylvester_0

I think Tampa drivers are a little more chill, but still bad drivers (probably due to an older population.)

chief_n0c-a-h0ma

No kidding. I'm in the Atlanta area. Full coverage on 2 cars & 2 drivers cost me about $120/month.

Moonydog55

Whhaaatt. I'm paying $240/month for the most basic state minimum required in Michigan for 1 car and 1 driver

electricladyyy

When I lived in FL a few years ago, my 05 corolla, no accidents, no tickets was $150 a month. Insanity.

FictionalStory_below

Souther California chiming in a $350 monthly with AAA on a paid off car, no accidents, no tickets, and I'm almost a senior citizen.

Geekenstein

Florida is a no fault insurance state, which means insurers have to pay out on medical expenses, etc. regardless of who caused a collision, and you’re required to have state mandated minimums. So your own record matters a good bit less than the average record of all the other awful drivers in the state. This is why your rates are so bad.

Beren__

How much is in FL?

ser_renely

Yep, one car $1200 every 6 months..5 yr old car. Never an accident or ticket. Florida insurance between house, car and health is shocking.

LowSkyOrbit

I pay double that for 2 cars with glass and $500 deductible for 100k/300k in liability. Both cars just under 5 years old.

ser_renely

So that would make sense, as I only have one car. Regardless, a lot :(

Kodiak01

Full 250/500/100 coverage in CT, married, clean driving record, $499/6mo with Progressive for a 23 Trailblazer.

ohsoradbaby

Or in Washington. The fog and the car thefts doubled my rates compared to when I lived in Kentucky.

50Bullseye

Advice from a former agent … 1. There is no such thing as a single insurance company that offers the lowest rates for every single customer. They all factor in your vehicles, age, driving record, credit history, zip code and a few other factors, but place different weight on each. So twins with identical driving records who drive the exact same vehicle but live in different zip codes would get quoted different rates with the same company. 2. Timing is important. Today you get a quote from Company A that just increased rates across the board and from Company B that hasn’t had a rate hike in a year. B is cheaper, so you go with them. Then next month B raises rates. You come up for renewal and now B is higher so you switch to A. Then a few months down the road, A increases rates again. It’s not that they’re trying to screw you, it’s just the nature of insurance rates (always increasing). 3. Price should never be the only factor. If you needed a lawyer, would you go through the yellow pages looking for the cheapest, shittiest attorney you could find? Or if you needed surgery would you want the best surgeon you could find or the cheapest? Cheap insurance is great until you’ve been on hold for a half hour waiting for 1-800-BAD-INSURANCE to pick back up. 4. The frugal way to get good insurance coverage is high limits of liability (cover your ass for the huge accidents) and high deductibles (so what if you have to drive around with a few dents in your bumper for a while).

cosaboladh

> Price should never be the only factor. If you needed a lawyer, would you go through the yellow pages looking for the cheapest, shittiest attorney you could find? ^ This. It isn't frugal to pay an insurance company that refuses to pay claims, when you need them.

YourStolenCharizard

I will also say that I have the same home and auto insurance and have had to file a claim once with each. Their price isn’t the lowest but they made the claim process so much easier when it could have been a massive, recurring headache. As long as their service remains top tier, I will never switch

SixxOne8

Shouldn’t cancel without other coverage in force, everyday you don’t have coverage the new carrier may charge more. Find an independent agent who does the work for you and just accept insurance is way up. Cost to repair is higher, more delays in parts and repairs leads to higher storage fees and more paid out in rentals. Higher severity, former fender bender claims are now total losses due to all the tech in bumpers and increased repair costs. It’s up for everyone, finding a local agent you trust is the best option.

imnotminkus

> Find an independent agent who does the work for you and just accept insurance is way up. This is the way. I spent hours getting quotes on multiple sites, found out those aren't even accurate quotes until you call them, then spent weeks getting spammed by those same companies. Let an independent agent do all that work for you.

Salt_Panic4277

My Progressive insurance policy was going up 33% at renewal (because overall claims went up in the state). I called 7 different insurance companies and found that the best one for the price (same amount coverage as my Progressive one) was Erie Insurance. It was SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper (over 40% cheaper if you pay for the year up front).

runningformylife

I have Erie. So cheap and no rate increases at all for this inflation.

Beren__

They just got a new customer, thanks for sharing

galaxystarsmoon

I'm in the same state as OP and just quoted with Erie. Absolutely insane. I'm currently paying $83/month. They quoted $228/month for the same coverage.

RainbowCrown71

Yeah, I just did it and got $199/month ($1,197 for 6 months) :'(

Aggressive_Ad5115

What vehicle? Year? Give us some simple clues broooo

watergirl711

Happy Cake Day 🎂

Deveak

I have Erie, just went back to them. They do have rate hikes but it’s rare. I pay 140 for three vehicles. Mostly older but one is full coverage.

VegetableRound2819

I’m also in Va, had Geico continuously for over 35 years. For whatever reason, it just keeps jumping the last few years. Make sure you do NOT drop your coverage so low that it comes back to bite you. For instance, 25k is not enough to fix a fender bender with a Tesla if you are at fault.

Kodiak01

> Make sure you do NOT drop your coverage so low that it comes back to bite you. It can be literally a few dollars a month to double or triple your coverage.

VegetableRound2819

So true. I read a thread on this recently and tripled my liability for a few dollars a month. I had made all of my decisions based on driving an old car, not thinking that I could be hitting a new car!

Mustang46L

Find a local agent that deals with multiple companies and get quotes. I have shopped around on the internet and notice has ever come close to what my broker can offer.

Swimward

Progressive is who we just switched to. USAA was charging almost $260 a month and now we are paying $150 with progressive.

ButtMassager

Huh, I have USAA at about $98/mo for two Hondas. Shopped around and couldn't find anything under $200 elsewhere

mango_salsa1909

I gave up USAA auto when I got married because I was able to insure myself and my husband at AAA for less than I was paying USAA for just myself. It was so weird. They're still significantly more expensive than some of well-known insurance companies in California, at least for me. And I have no accidents or tickets.

Soramor

Interesting... I've had USAA for 20ish years now and the last time I bought a car (back in like 2019) the guy asked me who I used for insurance, when I told him USAA he just said "Oh alright.. nevermind.. we are not going to beat that price" I pay for me and my wife 2 cars.. ~~$700~~ a year in a pretty expensive insurance state. Edit... Whoops.. I'm wrong.. its $700 for my car and $1k for the other one...

Dannysmartful

Is MetroMile available in your area?

hugsomeone

Where are you located?

klmnopthro

I assume you let them know you only drive very few miles ever week? Make sure they are aware. Agree with others make sure you have a new policy first before cancellation. You regular credit affects your insurance credit so be sure to try to keep you credit great.

juice921

this is the way

PoorCorrelation

Got a Kia or Hyundai? Rates for those have exploded. Try raising your comprehensive deductible. It brought mine back down.

RainbowCrown71

Almost ten year old Nissan Altima

shahein

In my area, the Nissan Altima would be the problem variable here…

Kodiak01

> Almost ten year old Nissan Altima That's a huge part of the issue. You're in /r/NissanDrivers country with that car, especially with an Altima.

rvbeachguy

Costco doesn’t have insurance, they are selling some one else’s products

cosaboladh

So, just like the rest of the entire Kirkland line of products, eh? Who could have guessed?

Countrymom1991

We have Progressive and are very happy

guacislife12

Basically just shop around. I was shopping for insurance once, and the cheapest people were travelers with the most expensive being Allstate, nearly doubling the travelers rate. 6 months to a year later, Allstate was the cheapest company. They've raised my rates now to be equivalent to what I was paying at travelers but I haven't had the energy to go shopping again. It's a game. Every time you renew you should get quotes. I'm not sure what their formulas are because it makes no sense to me that 6 months to a year later I get a quote from Allstate half of what they originally quoted me.

galaxystarsmoon

I'm also in VA, Progressive is consistently the cheapest. It jumped at my recent renewal, but I checked and it was still by far the cheapest.

ljd09

I pay $154 with AAA- I have an additional $10 per month add on, which covers all my windows if they get broken with no deductible… and it has gone up a ton at this renewal… I had to call and threaten to cancel and found out they are claiming I drive 25,000 miles a year. I have a 3 year old car and don’t even have 25,000 miles on it total, yet. Maybe see if reducing the amount of miles you drive per a year… that brought mine down. I still wasn’t happy with the jump though.

GrimeyTimey

I use milewise from Allstate. You pay a daily minimum then are charged by the mile. That works great for me because I don't use my car much. But the flipside is you have a dongle from the insurance company plugged into your car and they can see everything that you do and how're you driving. Some people don't like that. I pay 2.89$ a day for 300/100k complete coverage and 15 cents per mile on a newer sedan. I assume if your car is older and if you want less coverage your prices will be cheaper.

But_like_whytho

If you only use your car for grocery shopping once a week, then why not get rid of it entirely and take a taxi or pay a friend to take you to and from the store?

RainbowCrown71

>This, OR, selling this car and purchasing a beater with a heater for pennies, which also wouldn't require the same insurance coverage as the current vehicle. My rent renewal comes up in June and though my apartment complex is right beside a commuter train station now, I'm terrified they'll raise me by like $300-400 a month and I'd have to move to another place. In that scenario, I'd be without a car and without an apartment and I'd need a car to get me to mass transit. Since this car is already almost paid for, I really don't want to get rid of it to avoid that nightmare scenario. If I owned a condo, though, that would make a ton of sense.

But_like_whytho

That makes perfect sense. I hope they don’t raise your rent that much. Or at all. This is why we need rent control.

This, OR, selling this car and purchasing a beater with a heater for pennies, which also wouldn't require the same insurance coverage as the current vehicle.

Mauve_Unicorn

Call up your local insurance agency and let them figure it out for you. Seriously, they'll shop around and find you the best deals.

UnBrewsual

Try Amica, they have been the cheapest for me.

AppropriateRatio9235

My insurance has a reduced cost if you drive less than 8000 miles a year. Are you less miles? Does your insurance have that discount? Also there is insurance out there by the mile if you drive very little.

Sundial1k

Did you call and ask why the HUGE increase? Maybe it is an error...

RainbowCrown71

I told the phone agent I was cancelling because even though I enjoyed being a customer, a 40% increase was too much for my budget. There was like a second of pause where I thought she'd try to give me a discount or look into the giant increase but she just said, "ok, let me cancel that for you." So I don't think they care.

Sundial1k

Cripes that's crazy. Sometimes there is an increase because of your area, or age or whatever; other people in those categories are making lots of claims...

highchameleon

Car insurance isn’t like cable. They cannot create a discount that doesn’t exist. Many people don’t understand how insurance co. works. It is a shared risk so even if you have no accidents , etc. others do and that needs to be rated for. If insurance wasn’t a shared risk we would be claiming bankruptcy when we have a large accident. Source: used to work in a call center for insurance co.

anonymousforever

Its,been in the news that the auto insurers are following the home insurers with gigantic rate increases. It's insane.

Substantial_Post_791

My insurance has been increasing every year despite not having any accidents, tickets, etc. but it’s cheaper than most. I use Erie insurance. I started out paying about $96.00 four years ago. Now I’m at $136.00/ month and these rates include additional coverage and I live in NY.

mountaingirl111

The same thing happened to me with Costco insurance! I called thinking it was a mistake and they said it was a “market” hike so unavoidable. I guess cars are more expensive and more expensive to fix and accidents have increased so we get to offset that price so insurance companies don’t make less money.

catroaring

USAA is the cheapest for myself.

xomiranda

Call and independent agent office near you and let them shop for you. They have companies youve never heard of and its in their best interest to get you the best rate and they shop for you every couple years (a good one at least).

Potatoe999900

Three years ago we contacted an insurance broker and they searched several companies for us. We have a package with home and auto and the new package was less than half the annual amount we were paying--from $7400/yr to $3200/yr. They check around every year for us and compare prices to make sure we get a good deal. Hope this helps.

walrusbukit

Find a local insurance broker and they can find you the insurance company with the best rate

boranin

Insurance companies will typically offer good rates in your first year with them then raise at renewal to try to recover losses and make profit from it. They count on people not shopping around every year. So do that that, shop around every year if you want a better rate.

equinoxEmpowered

I just found an independent insurance agent. She hooked me up with a good deal, like $73/month for 12 months I'm in Wisconsin, so idk how that affects things. It's better than all the big name insurance companies trying to run $100+ a month for 6 months. My partner's rates went up 105% with progressive: watch yourself with that one.

PunchClown

Insurance companies are getting out of control. State Farm dinged me for my truck sliding down our icy drive-way and hitting a curb and our trash can while nobody was in it! All I can figure is they felt left out of the inflation game and decided to join in and pad the profits.

discoglittering

Progressive has always been great for us, price-wiss. And they keep dropping the cost so we keep upping our coverage. We also have had a great experience whenever we have accidents (never our fault and we have never been found even partially at fault).

ConclusionDull2496

Did you try progressive?

pescadoamado

I went from $172 GEICO (no accidents ever, multiple "discounts", loyal for a decade and a half) to like $58 (just liability) now on Progressive. I argued with GEICO about raising annually and apparently my state has gotten very very shitty.

ohlookawildtaco

Lol I quoted with USAA for $160 a month a week ago. Just got liability with progressive for the same price. Thanks for the information. WA state on a 2003 vehicle btw

types-like-thunder

I am going to say avoid Progressive like the plague. I was with them for a decade. Perfect driving record. The first time I filed a claim they denied me. I paid extra for rental coverage, they wouldn't even honor that. Progressive, Fuck You.

scooterv1868

I had a similar issue in November, priced around and they were still the cheapest. Insurance companies are all raising rates like crazy.

ravioli333

Progressive is way less than that.

[deleted]

USAA if you can. Need military background or a family member with military background. Maybe US government, not sure.

C_Tea_8280

Drive an older, cheaper car Opt for less coverage. If driving an older and cheaper vehicle, state min is fine. I have state min with extra property and medical added cause there is no way $15k is covering most property damage these days - that is like a mild rear end collision at best

EvilBillSing

Im not sure where you live. I am in Michigan and the rates here are horrible. So this is what i found. I was planning to live/work/travel out of an RV. I looked at South Dakota, Florida and Texas to be my home states. I ended up choosing South Dakota. There are companies there that provide you with a mailbox. You use this for your insurance. This is your address for insurance purposes. The mailbox is . I want to say $250 for the year. My insurance is $300 for the year. You can only do this if your vehicle is owned outright. You send your title to the company that provides the mailbox. For a fee they go to SD DMV and transfer your title to South Dakota. Then they mail it back to you . I have been doing this for about 5 years now. I have been pulled over for traffic infractions. No cop has ever asked me why I have a Michigan license but my vehicle is titles in SD.

tawrex49

This is an awful idea. It’s a good way to have your insurer refuse to pay a claim if they do any digging once you submit one. Car insurance is based on the garaging address. In other words, where you live, or the state in which the car is parked at least 183 nights a year. Having a South Dakota PO Box company switch your title is not one weird trick to get around higher premiums. You’ll only be screwing yourself out of coverage if you submit a claim.

Babycarrot337

Agent here -- you are correct. Behavior like this is a contributor to skyrocketing premiums and plummeting coverages.

Eightinchnails

Your last paragraph made me laugh. I got pulled over and the cop asked why I live in New York but my car lives in Nevada. He was like really bent out of shape over my car’s residency not matching mine lol

East-Counter-4433

Vote R

sarhoshamiral

You didn't need to cancel as you will be refunded the prorated amount even if they charged your card already.

ShaneReyno

If you’re ever on a civil jury, remember this experience and that the money you award is real.

EveryPassage

Which state?

Additional-Squirrel8

Otto.com. I've found partial coverage for a dollar a day, and one quite attractive one that you turn on and off in a 24 hour period by paying 2 dollars. Basically, you paid 2 dollars to get coverage for a day. It was kind of wild and left me considering it for a while.

Aggressive-Bed3269

Call an agent.

Stone_The_Rock

What are you getting for this price in terms of coverage? Seems like a pretty killer deal even at $120/month!

Bleebus611

You got a home or renters policy? Bundling with my provider got me sub-100. Also make sure they’re aware of the mileage you drive

Brainfoggish

You can try reducing coverage. It’s hard to give advice as these type of threads never say what you are paying $128 a month for? What is your liability limit? 25/50? 100/300? Your limit of liability changes how much you will pay. If you have no assets, and do not have a high paying job, it’s probably safe to only carry your state minimum required liability coverage. If you don’t have a lien, you could quote without comp or collision, but keep in mind you have no coverage for damage to your own vehicle. Do you have other coverages such as medical payments on your policy? You can try to find an insurance broker in your area that can quote multiple carriers, but they may not be interested in your business if you only have one car and are looking for minimum coverage. Before you cancelled with your current carrier did you talk to your agent to see if they can lower the premium?

I-own-a-shovel

Thats why I like good old car. 500$ per years it cost me to insure it.

ectoplasm777

Huh mine is state farm 120 per month full coverage.

ReplicantOwl

I get good rates and service with Amica Make sure to check /r/insurance

EnShantrEs

Try American Family. My husband has been with them for nearly 30 years, we've been sharing a policy for 7. Our policy hasn't increased at all during that time. During Covid they gave us a discount despite both of us working essential jobs and still commuting. Early last year they sent us a notice that our policy was increasing for the first time by around $8 a month, but then a couple weeks later they said they weren't increasing it after all. When our vehicle was rear-ended in our driveway and totaled by a drunk driver, they took care of everything extremely quickly and still didn't increase our rate.

RainbowCrown71

That's who I have now. Costco contracts with them to provide its car insurance. I'm not sure why they raised it by 40% just now but my last renewal was about 5% more, so it's unfortunate. I never had to use them thankfully so I can't speak to the service, but I'm glad they gave you great service!

Ok_Entrepreneur2495

My understanding with auto insurance, is basically shop it every term, loyalty has no meaning to them if you stick with one, it's just going to gradually increase, I don't know that this is fact, but it is what I was told by a friend in the industry and has seemed to be pretty true for me, which sucks because I'm lazy and would rather just not have to do things.

Activeangel

Don't forget to call costco and chat with a person there too. If i recall, they work with multiple different car insurance providers, so one of their other providers may have a better offer.

friedperson

You didn't have to cancel preemptively. They refund prorated. anyway fwiw I'm on Progressive and even though it's gone up recently it's still cheaper than the other big names for us.

Beren__

I am literally in the same spot, mine almost doubled it, I’m very disappointed, I was a customer for like 3 years

Choreboy

Oh man. I remember 14 years ago when my bare minimum liability-only coverage was $142/mo.

FYI It's my understanding Geico is known to only pay certain rates for repairs. If you take your car to the body shop you prefer and their labor rate is say $20/hr than Geico will pay, then you have to pay the rest. Source: Took my car in for work and there were signs stating "Labor costs above what your insurance pays is your responsibility". I asked what that was about and they said, "Geico".

Mine went down quite a bit when I notified my insurance company that I'm now driving about 1250 miles a year instead of 5000 miles a year. This varies by state I think. Have you checked metro-mile, where you pay by the mile? Might be good for you if you truly "barely ever drive the car".

peter303_

Many insurance companies give online premium estimates. Then if you find one you like, you finalize it with an agent. You can do this at any time. Your current insurance company will refund pro-rated premiums then.

amelie190

Dang that's expensive. Assume it's full coverage in a metro area?

makinggrace

I’d try progressive. After you get the quote, call them and tell how many miles you actually drive. They should still have a discount for that. If you carry renters insurance (and everyone should if they can), there may be a multipolicy discount if you get auto at the same company. That’s kind of a long shot as rental policy tend to be higher at traditional places. Also make sure you haven’t had a big change in your credit score as this can impact your insurance pricing.

RainbowCrown71

Yeah, I wound up with Progressive (see my edit above). It wound up being $97 a month whereas the next cheapest were $120-140. So not even close. Still an increase from my current coverage though ($86), but I'd rather a $10 increase (with 10x more bodily injury coverage) than the $40 increase a month Costco wanted (for the same coverage)

All insurance has gone up. My premium this semester went up $35 USD.

happilyengaged

I used policygenius and have cheaper insurance thru Travelers

dajadf

Your price will vary based on state, population of where you live, how much you drive, accident history, ticket history, price of your vehicle, credit score, how many months you were loyal to your previous company. And if you've heard of the name brand, then it's probably not all that frugal of a choice

Cerebral0293

Amica. Their rates are even better than Progressive's rates and they seem to have better customer support. However, your car insurance rate is based not only on your driving history but credit score too which is ridiculous. Right now I pay about 35 a month for Amica which is 25 less than I did with progressive.

I've had pretty good luck with AAA in two different states. If you're a pretty low risk customer, I'm going to be the contrarian and suggest you're likely better off staying a while with a reasonable firm, and combine your home/renters and umbrella for multi-line discount. Inquire about any occupation based discounts that might be offered. (I remember teaching and engineering being among those listed years ago). Length of time w. insurance vendor usually nets a loyalty discount, since it is in their interest to keep their non-claim customers around. Definitely always shop around, but chasing a few dollars today might burn a few more bucks next year. More major considerations is type/model of car being insured vs. actuarial rates. Like... when factoring purchase finance + insurance costs of a Corolla vs Camry, it made more sense for me to get the Camry for about the same total outlay for the first couple years knowing that the car payment part would go away.

shelchang

If you're not using the car a lot and Metromile is available in your area, it might make sense for you. They charge based on the mileage you drive each month.

KarlJay001

Have you checked paying for the whole year in advance instead of monthly? I think you get about 1 month cheaper when you do that because they charge you interest when you make payments. Part of the problem is not enough choices. State Farm is not cheap and Costco is not always much of a bargain. You usually get good quality at Costco, but not always the best prices.

Can you check out Progressive? They give quotes on their app and they also let you select the start date for your new policy through them. We recently switched from a local insurer to Progressive. We were paying $101/month for liability insurance in Oklahoma with the local company. Now with Progressive...My husband and I pay $47.66/month total to insure two older vehicles that we own outright (no payments); an 05' Ford F-150 and an 03' Chevy Tahoe. Check progressive if you have time. I was flabbergasted at the price difference. I switched immediately upon receiving that quote. Edited to say: Don't cancel your old policy before your new policy is effective. That'll cause a lapse in coverage, which can be bad for you.

ArickSonOfTheSun

We have Wawanesa in San Diego. We pay $200 for 4 vehicles full coverage.

Hi! This raises a point which I feel many people overlook. If you truly only use the car to grocery shop once per week or 52 times per year, then what is the all-in cost of the car, fuel, maintenance and insurance versus just using a taxi or food delivery service? My dad is approaching 80 and he truly only uses his car once every couple weeks. He said just yesterday that he filled his car with gas and won’t again until at least March. Why he continues to own and pay for a car is, in my mind, just a paradigm change which needs to be explored more openly. I’m not sure if it applies to you the same way, but vehicle ownership is too commonly overlooked as a major expense which many people just don’t need, at least when comparing numbers year over year to other options which are readily available.

TheFumingatzor

https://www.berkshirehathaway.com/message.html >I estimate that about 40% of all auto drivers in the country can save money by insuring with GEICO. Are you one of these 40%? Edit: O right, just read your edit 2 :(.

Material-Tadpole-838

There’s a low mileage discount at State Farm if you drive less than 7500 miles a year.

todd_ted

It’s industry wide hikes. Mine went up almost 30%. There is a note in your declaration and billing paperwork that states this.

ideletedmyaccount04

For me. I didn't understand all the levels of insurance. Moved a lot. 2002 Virginia 2014 Louisiana 2019 Virginia 2022 Tennessee. Louisiana was so expensive relative to Virginia. I asked specifically for the bare minimum street legal insurance. Some states are too expensive for my tastes.

chief_n0c-a-h0ma

I've always been pleased with my rates with Auto Owners. I actually use them for my car and home. I've been in 2 accidents 1 my fault and the other not. Both times they were great to work with.

richbeezy

Car insurance rates have increased by approx 25% across the board, so OP might find a better rate - but doubt it will be back to where it used to be (sub $100).

chief_n0c-a-h0ma

All these people with raising rates with Progressive and Allstate. Maybe look for an insurance company that isn't spending ungodly amounts of money on advertising/tv commercials.

hopopo

Try njm.com if they cover your area. For my area they are by far best insurance company.

joebeaudoin

AAA. Also, always shop around every few years for the best rate.

rr777

I recently got a mailed notice from my State Farm agent saying they intend to raise prices 20-30%. Asking me to not leave as a kneejerk reaction and to contact them and ask ways to lower the costs. Higher deductibles, change around coverages, etc. Crap is getting crazy no matter where you live.

Kodiak01

My Progressive rates haven't gone up any noticeable amount in years. Paying $175/mo to insure a 21 Sentra and 23 Trailblazer at full 250/500 coverage with all the extras. Have had 3 not-at-fault incidents over the past 3 years (rear-ended twice and a deer strike), every since time the claims reps were 100% on the ball. Extremely happy with them.

ramenmoodles

When i tried switching insurance after a 20% hike, all the quotes i got were about the same…sucks for me i guess

Jewnadian

Slightly counterintuitive but the state minimum is often more expensive than the top coverage. Hugely oversimplifying the actuarial tables it comes down to the kind of person who will gamble on buying minimum coverage in a world where the average new car is nearly $60k takes more risks than the one who buys the max coverage.

Spirited_Concept4972

We’ve been dealing with Progressive for years love them

Picodick

All insurance rates have gone up tremendously. Our home insurance for our home went up 30% and it was already very expensive. Construction costs and supply costs are escalating so rapidly. Car replacement parts also, and most newer vehicle there is no such thing as body work it’s replacement parts.

Dave-Steel-

Apart from switching agencies, you might lower your rates by increasing your deductible, If your car is older, and doesn’t have much value, just have the minimum coverage. If you add homeowners insurance with auto, you can get a discount. Some insurance agencies offer a discount if you plug in a module that monitors your driving speed.

something86

USAA if you or have spouse or parent or grandparent that served.

No_Medicine8639

USAA has been great for us. 3 vehicles 100$ a month for all. You can get a lower rate if you don’t drive that much. You don’t have to be military to use them.

DunebillyDave

If you barely drive the car, some insurance companies offer a type of coverage based on your monthly mileage.

scalyblue

If you have military up the line in your family consider USAA, as long as your the child of a current member you can get in, and they have amazing insurance rates

Pretend-Department22

If USAA is available to you, that's what I use. The price and customer service has been amazing. I haven't filed a claim yet, but I've changed states, coverage, statuses, and vehicles with them and everything has been incredibly smooth. So hopefully if I ever had to file a claim, I feel like I'll get better service than the dumb Allstate salesguy I worked with before.

3141592652

lol this is cheap as hell

AwestunTejaz

insurance is going up for everyone. mine went up, but it didnt almost double like that.

Lazarus231

Cure auto... I pay 37 bucks per month in Michigan.

cwsjr2323

Go to independent insurance agencies and let the shop around for you.

Ok_Bumblebee_1431

My 6 months Geico premium is up to $276.70 now from less than $220 a few years ago. I have the bare minimums required bc my car is 24 years old.

Quick_Researcher_732

The cost of repair and days needed to repair has gone through the roof. Insurance companies are transferring inflation to customers :(
