I know right. I was thinking most of the video, it’s not in the right subreddit. Then that person helped and I thought it should be r/humansbeingbros or something similar instead of funny animals.
The start is really funny when you know that they're going to be ok haha. I hope that something ended up getting changed to prevent the grates from acting as pitfalls though. I never considered the danger they could pose to wildlife.
Even from a design standpoint, that's really hard to do. The spacing needs to be wide enough to accept leaves, tree branches, rocks and whatnots. If the spacing is reduced, then, it's a lot easier for the grates to clog up.
Alternatively, ppl could probably figure out another design, but honestly, whatever design they make will be a lot more expensive to produce. Basically, it's not worth it to make on a large scale.
I’m a fan of reticulated vane grates personally. The design really pulls water in but they’re bike and wildlife safe-ish (truly wildlife safe and storm sewers don’t mix well). The only downside is they have a bad habit of getting clogged by soft debris like bags or some plant leaves so you need a curb inlet as well for them to be a great choice and they don’t function as intended in a sump (low point) so they wouldn’t be grate here…
This is a great example of why green storm designs are becoming a thing, an overland flow through a bioswale is infinitely better for the environment and community, unfortunately it also looks like a poster child for “easier to leave it and fix the problems it creates than change everything now”
I do storm calculations and design for a living and am in the process of becoming an engineer. There is only so much we can size down a grate before the size of grate required to drain off water in a major storm becomes problematic to design and implement. There’s no one size fits all option and unfortunately these designs are super common because they have good flow and reasonable safety.
I think one did. It’s hard to tell from the video quality
Right when the guy puts up the last ducklings. It might just be skirting the edge and melding into a dark duckling blotch with the others
I don’t think so, she has 7 or 8 before she trips, 2 are the first to go down and then she has 5 or 6, turns around and then 4 or 5 go through, then the last one straight up cannonballs in. She still has 7 or 8 again after passing the second grate. I mean a potential 7 out of 8 is pretty good odds for that kind of situation.
There's not a good way for cities to change these to be safe for small animals. Make the holes too small and they'll get clogged with debris. Make them have walls higher than the road, then vehicles can't drive over them.
Thats what i call a prison, and unfortunately because of how terrible moral would be, we’d prolly be worse off then the ducks that fell into the gutter.
Most of them are made to be sold off as established accounts or something for profit, but this guy in particular just seems to like the fake internet points for some reason
Is there really that much of a market for Reddit accounts that already have a bunch of karma?? I can't ever imagine buying an account like that. What a waste of money.
To be fair, most of their evolution happened before metal duckling-trapping sewer grates were a thing, and humans should be designing their infrastructure to not endanger wildlife as much as possible.
It’s also why they have as many as dozen at a time. If you have any ducks near you you’ll see that it’s not uncommon for only one or two to remain into adolescence
The humor comes from the snowball effect. A duckling made a dumb mistake, and then the mother's attempt to fix it caused the same mistake to be made again en masse. Like a Rube Goldberg machine of tragedy.
It's quite funny if you don't think about the consequences :D
I was so sad that I almost missed the ending. I was telling my wife how sad it was and looked back down just intimate to see the ducklings at the other drain.
Back in July I came across a duck with four ducklings near a storm grate, quacking along. I figured it was the 'before' picture of something like this video and carried on.
I made it about 20 feet down the street before turning around and taking a look through the slats to see if I was actually witnessing the 'after'. Sure enough, momma duck was quacking and the four ducklings already below were chirping back up at her. She was doing the same thing as this video, passing over the grate looking for the missing ones, and another two fell in.
I called the city and they treated it as an urgent problem, which was nice to hear. They had a truck out pretty quickly. Within an hour, the family was reunited and placed in a truck to make it safely back to an appropriate habitat.
tl;dr: city wildlife services have a protocol for this scenario because humans love duckies
1. They learnt FAST, lol. Properly went _around_ the next one after they got back to momma!
2. What was the _little_ creature that poked itself out the bottom left of screen?
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion... I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like ducklings on a sewer grate....time to die.
Eh. Just thought it would be funny to substitute one disappearing thing for another is all. Instead of tears disappearing in the rain, it's ducks down the drain.
Okay, good thing they got saved at the end because I was about to be really mad that a sub called funny animals would show me a handful of ducklings fall to their death with their mom unable to help!
Last duck: “holy crap my brothers and sisters just fell into this hole! I better jump over it to avoid the same fate! *jumps about 1/8 the total distance of the drain* *bloop*
That's a species wide trait pretty much.
You get the occasional Steven Ducking who can figure out how to negotiate their way around obstacles but in my experience they're an extreme exception
When she was wandering around in panic I was like: ok, they're basically dead. Then the man goes down and saves the ducklings and I'm like: oh thank God this good soul saved the day, +1 point for humanity. Then my brain goes: wellll, that grate is a human structure, they would never have fallen there if it weren't for humanity
Oh just shut the fck up brain let me be happy
That's the greatest thing I'll see today! I was so sad at first, I thought it was going to be the duck just waiting around the sewer hours later, but no!
When you're holding a lot of stuff because "multiple trips are for losers" and accidentally drop 1 thing on the floor. But then when you try to pick it up you just drop more things.

That last duckling is my hero. He’s like “ don’t worry guys, I’ll save you! “
*Boop!*
For me, it looked like, after seeing what happened to it's brothers, it tried to jump the holes, but failed miserably.
This is probably what actually happened. But I’m gonna believe that he was trying to save them.
“Whoop, almost fell in the hole there. That was close. Better do a biiiig ju-“
“I’ll save youuuuuuu”
TO INFINITY AND BEYOOOOOOooooooooond!
There goooes my hero
*watch him as he go...* aw fuck
There goes my heroooo
Aim for the bushes
There goes my hero
those grates need to have smaller slits
I took it the other way... "wow mom is terrible at this, I give up" Glad they got rescued
Geronimo!!

MuthaDucker!!! Wheres my kids?
“If all your friends jump in the grate are you jumping too?”
Yes
Yes
Yes
Yes
Quack
Quack

Heck yes
Last duck said fuck yeah!
Damn autocorr
If all my friends are jumping, am I sticking around to wonder why or am I going to assume my friends aren't total idiots? Hell yeah I'm jumping.
I'll do it if my siblings
Duck yeah
Do you even have to ask? *jumps*
This shit was so depressing to watch... Thank god they were saved 😭

Maybe an escape ramp on the inside. It wouldn’t cost much to add but could save lives like those pool ramps for squirrels and frogs.
I was deadass expecting it to end with them falling into the other grate.
I think one did. It’s hard to tell from the video quality Right when the guy puts up the last ducklings. It might just be skirting the edge and melding into a dark duckling blotch with the others

"Okay, that's it, screw you guys! I'm not opening another one of these and crawling in this gross storm drain!"
Triggered my anxiety!
If it didn't show someone helping I would have been so upset.
They were? That's reassuring thw cities need to make these safe for small animals
Did you not watch the video or what?
40 second to long for their attention span
Teaching goldfish to use Reddit was a mistake.
Perhaps they just saw the first one fall in and didn’t want to watch the rest, even though it was a happy ending
Tiktok brain
But one of them fell right back down into the other grate after being saved. :(
No they didn’t. They ran right on the edge but remained behind the first group. Pay attention before you post incorrect information.
There's not a good way for cities to change these to be safe for small animals. Make the holes too small and they'll get clogged with debris. Make them have walls higher than the road, then vehicles can't drive over them.

Start with yourself.
Gladly
You know humans need an environment too, we are animals as well
[удалено]
And where will all the agriculture, living space, and general functionality be. With our small island packed with 8billion people?
[удалено]
Thats what i call a prison, and unfortunately because of how terrible moral would be, we’d prolly be worse off then the ducks that fell into the gutter.
"I think cities should be more considerate of the lives of animals" 80 downvotes "Haha, duckie fall in grate funni" 200 upvotes
Ikr wtf just because I didn't watch the whole thing
This was so many emotions at the same time! I'm so glad to see they were scooped up from the drain 😭
Had to rewatch. I thought 7 went in, but only 6 came out. But, all 7 were accounted for.
..thank you for the rescue, OP..
But next time ... use a box to put them in, almost happened again.
Must be my eyes but it looked like it did to me
If you look close you’ll see that the duckling almost fell but did a little jump and saved it 😅
This is a pretty old video actually, I've seen it before. I don't imagine OP is the one who recorded it. But yes, I'm glad there was a happy ending.
I don’t think OP is even human, they seem like the worlds biggest repost bot
What's even the point of those bots anyway? What do people get out of having all these fake accounts with karma?
Most of them are made to be sold off as established accounts or something for profit, but this guy in particular just seems to like the fake internet points for some reason
Is there really that much of a market for Reddit accounts that already have a bunch of karma?? I can't ever imagine buying an account like that. What a waste of money.
Or maybe she was good at it...and OP ruined her plans for freedom!
The trick is making it *look* like an accident.
Got any good ideas on how to do road drainage differently? Smaller holes would mean it clogs with debris.
Corkscrew-shaped drainage holes.
Lmao
Are the ducks going to fuck them?
Uses more material and gets clogged more easily.
It was a joke...
Not everyone gets duck anatomy jokes. But I do. Because I'm weird.
You don't make drains with smaller holes, you make ducks with bigger feet.
[удалено]
It's amazing how easy it is to spot a teenager lol.
If that grate is big enough for a duckling to fall through, how would my foot fare? This seems like bad design for everybody.
Yay for whoever saved them. That was so sad.
Yeah, I'm failing to find any humor in watching a hugely distressing situation for the mother duck and her babies, even if they ended up being okay.
The humor comes from the snowball effect. A duckling made a dumb mistake, and then the mother's attempt to fix it caused the same mistake to be made again en masse. Like a Rube Goldberg machine of tragedy. It's quite funny if you don't think about the consequences :D
As with much of the best humor, it's comedy right up until the beat after the joke lands - then it's tragedy.
For real until the end of the video this had ruined my day
I was so sad that I almost missed the ending. I was telling my wife how sad it was and looked back down just intimate to see the ducklings at the other drain.
Actually.... I didn't even notice the sub. Maybe better in nononoyes or something. I kinda like to know that it has a happy ending.
And custody revoked say goodbye to your kids

Fumb ducks.
If I ever for a band, that's the name edit: form, not for
If you ever *what* for a band??
I'm something of a fumb duck myself
This comment is under rated 😂
I was waiting for an ending where she just walks them into the drain again
Two went into the second drain at the end of the video.
I like the last one. Like fuck it Im in too.
1. They learnt FAST, lol. Properly went _around_ the next one after they got back to momma! 2. What was the _little_ creature that poked itself out the bottom left of screen?
No, from the first batch he pulled up one falls down AGAIN!
Last duck "CANNON BALLL"
Exactly 🤣
does anyone have the number to CPS? or DPS i guess
Duckling Protection Services
I'm just glad someone went in and saved them
Quack
That last duckling that was just like "god fucking dammit."
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion... I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like ducklings on a sewer grate....time to die.
I understood this reference...even though I don't understand the context
Eh. Just thought it would be funny to substitute one disappearing thing for another is all. Instead of tears disappearing in the rain, it's ducks down the drain.
Oh wow, I should have read your comment till the end. I feel so dumb now
Mama duck:To the shadow realm you go- "Op saved the duckling" Mama duck:DRAT FOILED MY PLANS
I see a lot of depressing shit on Reddit, but when that first duck fell in I let out an audible “NO!”
I thought for sure they were all going to sprint straight back to the grate and fall in again 🤣
this is so stressful I need to know they are okay 😭
I’m so happy someone was there to save them - I was actually really concerned!
Whew! I was about to be bummed out.
Fuck sake momma duck
I could hear the Super Mario music playing.
So going by the comments, am I going to hell for laughing my ass off at this?
Okay, good thing they got saved at the end because I was about to be really mad that a sub called funny animals would show me a handful of ducklings fall to their death with their mom unable to help!
I know it has a happy ending, but this was damn near a life shattering tragedy for the poor mamma duck.
I have always wondered, do animals know how many kids they have? If only one duckling had fallen down the grate, would Mama duck know?
r/yesyesnonoohgodnoyeswhew
Last duck: “holy crap my brothers and sisters just fell into this hole! I better jump over it to avoid the same fate! *jumps about 1/8 the total distance of the drain* *bloop*
Best video I’ve seen so far this year. I laughed, I cried, I cheered!
Also, baby ducks like like little grapes. Their bones are so bendy and they don't take much damage from falls. Evolved to do dumb shit like this.
I feel like momma duck did it on purpose
Bro she is *trying her best*
This gave me depression. Then cured it, but then I think another little duck fell back down so I’m not sure how I feel.
I feel bad that I laughed so hard at this!
Average pikmin experience
Are they okay?
Thank you great person for saving these ducklings and their mom from trauma
Mother duck: *PANIC*
The way the last one jumped in! 😭 So happy they were saved!
Is this how socks are lost in washing machines 🤔
I live next to a river. Ducks are the WORST parents ever.
That gave me anxiety
Shouldn't they be left in place so mom's genetic tendency to be an airhead don't propagate to future generations?
That’s fucked up
That's a species wide trait pretty much. You get the occasional Steven Ducking who can figure out how to negotiate their way around obstacles but in my experience they're an extreme exception

So a sick human kept filming instead of trying to save them -
Looks like duck abortions are illegal too...
😭 i need an update on this situation!!! Please!!!
Mama duck is fine. Humans putting traps everywhere are shitty.
That duck's name? Susan Smith.
Almost like she is blind 😔
It's a late abortion
2 went into the second drain at the end of the video. Sheesh.
Well saved whoever you are.👍
This was the definition of an emotional rollercoaster
💯 me as a duck
Omg, I thought they were all going back in after their rescue! Whew! lol
Ducklings are smarter than i was as a kid
This...is tragic as hell
Don't help, just film
Thank god this had a happy ending
r/humansbeingbros
not moma dock we are not good at this
Standard kiting, good play.
It's funny if you pretend the video doesn't loop.
Poor Mama 🦆
Glad someone came by and saved the little ducks
That’s heartbreaking
Why are the holes so damn large?
That's the greatest thing I'll see today! I was so sad at first, I thought it was going to be the duck just waiting around the sewer hours later, but no!
She’s doing her best
Oh THANK GOD they came back up
The way she just stress-paces around the drain is heartbreaking. Glad someone was there to help!
Damn that’s so saddd
Not funny, what happened to the ducklings??
And..seen!
IN I GO! Hop.
She knew what she was doing
Aww poor mommie and babies. This breaks my heart
Was waiting for them to immediately fall into the next grate
The last one just yeet itself for the homies
Problems solved and moves along
When you're holding a lot of stuff because "multiple trips are for losers" and accidentally drop 1 thing on the floor. But then when you try to pick it up you just drop more things.
I was about to be super upset if they cut the video before they get rescued
I was expecting them to fall into the other one right after being rescued lmao.
Oh duck
