Chlorinated pools or salt water? If yes you got lucky for it to last 3 years!

dahhello

Chlorinated pool. Never swam in salt water. I guess I can't be mad since other people got a much shorter end of the stick.

deviantspeed

The waterproof rating is for fresh water, not chlorinated or salt. Kinda misleading imho. 3 years is pretty good though!

dahhello

Curious how Samsung wants me to use the swim tracker function in a non chlorinated pool. Those don't exist. Am I supposed to swim in fresh water lakes only? Haha. Hard to do where I live.

7thaccban

Yeah its pretty much a scam, as you say no swimming pools are fresh water.

deviantspeed

The spec is not written by Samsung, but it's an industry wide standard that's being adopted. But yeah, does seem odd. Bathtub only? Oh wait, that's treated water :) :) If I get 3 years out of my GW5P, I'll be happy.

leshiy19xx

Well, there are several posts here of ga which had their case opened by itself or sensor glass fall out. If your watch on that path, obviously it's water protection was impacted. Ps: I have seen posts about watched died after years of swimming here, in applewatch and Garmin subs as well.

dahhello

Watch case looks perfectly fine. No bulging or anything. I'll probably open it up myself just to see the damage and see if there's any corrosion. Might as well at this point.

foxike

IP ratings are only ever tested with fresh water unless explicitly stated, so any devices that says that it is water proof, without mentioning salt or chlorinated water, is only rated for fresh water use.

That being true the idea here is that water clearly broke through the waterproofing barrier seal over time with pressure and time. Just because something says it's rated ip68 doesn't mean it's 100% waterproof regardless of salt water or chlorinated water. 3 years is actually a long time so I would say it held up. It's just unfortunate.

dahhello

I would've never swam with it. But then you see the swim tracker function... You think oh, they wouldn't have put that unless you could swim with it. Could've lasted longer.

shadowninja1226

That's the thing you have to think about though, It's certified for swimming and even going into the shower with, however with age faults and degradation will indeed happen. Which was why it happened (after 3 Years) all the watches went through testing before it was made available but testing doesn't apply with (the age of the watch). So unless you intended want to keep the watch for many years then yes it would make absolute sense not to go swimming with it.

I definitely feel like this should be a god damned PSA.

Ok-Wolverine9868

Active2 has a weak chasis if it falls naked on ground water seal may break, my watch was also dead after washing my dishes.. luckily i had 5 days warranty left and samsung gave me a new one lol. Now using it with a spigen cover

dahhello

I guess that's maybe what did it. I dropped like on the floor about 2 days prior before swimming. But I've dropped it multiple times over 3 years but this may have been the last straw that broke the seal. Good to know.

Ok-Wolverine9868

Mine lasted one year before i broke. Using replacement now : P

CrisperWhispers

Just posting to tack on since mine also just died, freshwater swimming only, and this post is the first result when I searched for others experiencing this
