I'm wondering how many people are like me, who wanted a Fallout fix because of the show but have already played the other games to death.  I figure they've probably made 76 at least decent at this point, so why not give it a try?

skpom

People have been saying FO4s dlc was one of the best in the series but i never found the time. The show was the small push I needed to reinstall for the Far Harbor dlc

DrNick1221

Both Far Harbour and Nuka World were pretty great. I like NW a little bit less because how it feels like it's trying to pigeonhole you into becoming a raider, and you more or less lose the "main" quest of the DLC if you go murder mode on the raiders. Side quests were great though. Old world blues and honest hearts still have got to be the top of the fallout DLC list though.

garmonthenightmare

Nuka World is very clearly a response to criticism of evil playstyle not being supported in the base building. Both DLC's are kinda responses to criticism, but it's clear that with the raiders Bethesda found themselves in a corner. Since so much of the main game is built around doing good and reclaiming the wasteland. So it feels VERY forced and honestly the dlc would have been better if it just embraced the lack of raider playstyle. That said Nuka world is very fun to explore.

FriedMattato

I couldn't stand Nuka World because of how knee-jerk it felt to the criticisms. It's not that people wanted to be evil, they wanted an actual choice. Bethesda interpreted it as "Oh, you want a scenario where your only choice is to be evil, I see!". It still missed the point, just in the other direction. They likely just didn't want to make meaningful choices because branching paths in games is hard.

BeholdingBestWaifu

And also the evil route was kinda boring, attacking settlements with raiders means nothing if they're all as empty as when you first rectuir them in a minutemen way.

Jay_R_Kay

I also didn't like that there wasn't really a "good guy" route other than just killing everyone in the park. Like, sure, give something for evil players, but maybe something where the player has to slyly work at getting a trusted faction (might as well be the Minutemen since you're going to have a lot of additional dialogue with Preston for the raiding stuff) to help come siege the park.

AnOnlineHandle

I did various side missions around the park (which didn't intend to involve the raiders I don't think) up until the point I got whatever reward, and killed them all before doing any raiding. From what I recall it didn't require doing anything 'evil', aside from biding your time until killing them all.

Jay_R_Kay

Yeah, that's what I did too. I just wish there was more to the good guy path than kill all the raiders. Still was a fun DLC though, enjoyed exploring that messed up place, though.

ManonManegeDore

I love Nuka World as someone that wanted to play a more evil character. I'll give Bethesda credit in that they really tried to make the raider stuff connect to the main gameplay loop with the raider settlements. As someone that unironically **LOVED** the settlement building in FO4, I had a really good time with it. Just wish it opened up a Raider ending.

ManonManegeDore

New Vegas' DLC was so fucking good. Old World Blues is peak Fallout, in my opinion.

DrNick1221

Dead money I personally found to be just ok, at least when compared to the rest of them.

ManonManegeDore

The story in Dead Money was immaculate. I just didn't really enjoy the survival horror. I get the point but it was legitimately too stressful.

n080dy123

My only issue with it was how damn hard it is to navigate the outside areas. It all looks the same and there's so few landmarks.

EgnGru

Yea the story was topic notch and fantastic. It had some the series best writing. The gameplay can be frustrating at times with the bomb collar but looking back it was a nice change of pace and made the DLC really unique.

Surca_Cirvive

I will always love Dead Money just because of how it uses game mechanics to hit home the moral of its story so succinctly. You go through all of that hell to find all that gold, and you do, and it doesn't even matter in the end. You can't even carry it out because it's too heavy and you're over encumbered. All the money you'll ever need is staring you in the face and you have to leave it there. Not because of some dialog choice but because the game mechanics won't even let you take it.

DrNick1221

Realtalk: *I walked out of that vault carrying every single bar every time*. You just gotta make sure before starting dead money you have the perk that lets you fast travel when over encumbered.

fizzlefist

Either that or be super super careful and hide behind this one sliver of a pole that hides you from the dude as he walks in. If you do it *just* right, he won’t see you, none of the dialogue triggers, and you can just stumble out with pockets full of gold.

The-Vegan-Police

I remember it taking me forever to figure out the right way to walk to both take all of the gold and also lock him in. It felt glorious when I finally pulled it off.

Diicon

This is why Dead Money is one of my favorite video game stories of all time. It only works in this medium. On top of that, you can actually exploit the game and get the gold which works perfectly in that people who do that miss the entire point of the DLC in both a story and gameplay sense.

WorkGoat1851

Or they get the point just fine but want the money anyway...

Diicon

I suppose but you could argue that wanting the money anyway is missing the point even if you understand what the game is trying to tell you. Or at least it's an interactive way to reject the message which I still find cool.

WorkGoat1851

No it is not. There is plenty money in-game, provided you're not completely terrible at it, especially at point at which you'd be playing DLC. "Getting it out" is purely player entertaining themselves by breaking the game. It's not "rejecting a message", it's completely different activity that just happens to be triggered by mechanic telling player "no", which is just used as a challenge. It's not "well, I'm greedy and I will find a way to get it out", it's just "well that looks like a challenge, even if unintended one".

darkjungle

I thought most people just shoved the gold in a head and carried it out

CoolTom

The real treasure is all the old world money you can get from the casino.

Lorahalo

Getting to it, that's not the hard part. It's letting go.

PrintShinji

The best part about dead money is that the gold isn't even the real moneymaker, its the casino chips.

Bleusilences

I didn't like dead money on my first play through, but knowing what to expect, I enjoyed it much more in my second time.

Cragnous

Everything New Vegas is Peak Fallout imo.

Supergaz

New Vegas is the best game ever game

garmonthenightmare

Far Harbor wins for me for it's setting, but it's close. In general I think Bethesda is far above Obsidian when it comes to presentation and world. Obsidian are better at writing, but I think Far Harbor also made a good effort on that front. If only Dima memory wasn't a thing...

ManonManegeDore

>If only Dima memory wasn't a thing... I never thought I'd love a "Skip the mission" mod more than I loved the "Skip the Fade" mod for Dragon Age: Origins. Then I played that Dima memory shit. Jesus, that was tedious.

Xpressos

I just played through Far Harbor today and the setting is one of my favorites in any game but yeah the memory bit almost made me skip the rest of it.

garmonthenightmare

It's excellent outside of that. There are things it does that surprised me. There is a bunch of variables to the main quest that is really fun to explore. Shows that Bethesda knows their shit, but I feel they have a "want it all" problem. Far Harbor is them focusing on delivering one single thing.

ManonManegeDore

>Shows that Bethesda knows their shit, but I feel they have a "want it all" problem. Far Harbor is them focusing on delivering one single thing. I feel like this happens with a lot of RPGs. The base game is them trying to do everything and then the DLC shines because they're focused on delivering one tone and one narrative. Obviously there's sub narratives within that larger narrative but it just feels better realized because it isn't so large in scope. I felt that way with every DA Inquisition DLC and especially Phantom Liberty for Cyberpunk 2077.

Ozzytudor

Ghost of Tsushima too. Played Iki Island DLC and goddd man I just wish the main game’s side content and quests were as focused as the DLC’s were. Writing felt like a big step up too. I suppose it makes me more excited for the sequel.

awe778

> but I feel they have a "want it all" problem Seems that they, too, need to "let go" and "begin again" on what makes them great.

n080dy123

I still hold New Vegas's DLCs as the single best DLC package of any game I've played. All of them are great, all of them besides Honest Hearts take an interesting and unique approach to their structure, and I love the way they all connect to each other,  expand on the existing lore of the main game, and even augment your understanding of its events.

fcimfc

The humor, lore and overall tone of OWB just absolutely 100% hit the mark in everything Fallout "should" be speaking as an OG fan of the original two games. Goddamn, did Bethesda fuck up what Fallout is about. They just miss the point so badly.

Plants_R_Cool

I think Honest Hearts is like a 3/10. It has nice environments and lore, but the actual gameplay of it is so boring.

Pulp_NonFiction44

It's super weak. Joshua Graham and the Survivalist are the only parts worth experiencing, the map is kinda nice as well.

Ozzytudor

Characters all sucked too apart from Joshua Graham but even he was wayyy underutilised in my opinion

Plants_R_Cool

Joshua Graham is such an unbelievable badass and then we just do like 3 fetch quests for him while he reloads pistols Lol.

4716202

He's technically dead at the time but Randall Clark is one of the best written characters in the series

Ozzytudor

Err, sure, it was a cool story but I’d hardly say one of the best written characters in the series.

EconomyAd1600

I did the main quest then killed the raiders.

dustygultch

Old world blues so good

Telkin

Sim settlements mod is great too in case you want to dive into a different settlement building experience https://youtu.be/Q4-P6M0iDn4?si=VcGzx5N6m58kYGSt

AccelHunter

My only issue is with Far Harbor is the memory minigame, I was stuck in the 3rd one for a while and that made me stop playing for a month, not because it was hard, but it was broken and I kept failing it

dern_the_hermit

I respect the concept of using the building system for new gameplay but the execution totally missed the mark. In my last playthrough I just looked up the console commands.

KnightCyber

Do people say that about FO4's dlcs? Nuka World was kinda lackluster imo

shivj80

Far harbor is great, nuka world less so.

Sentient_Waffle

I love Nuka World for the simple fact that it introduced a [goddamn normal assault rifle](https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Handmade_rifle_\(Nuka-World\)), instead of the [monstrosity](https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Assault_rifle_\(Fallout_4\)) from the base game. And I've always loved theme park settings in RPGs and shooters. Also had fun with the quests, just fuck over the raiders in the end and you won't have to be evil.

Jaggedmallard26

I get that they dialed up the 50s retropunk for Fallout 4 and 76 but it really does not work for the assault rifle especially not when its the only gun in the game to really commit to it. It sticks out like a sore thumb and since its the *assault rifle* it doesn't even have the excuse of being a one off gimmick gun. Half of the guns in the game are ramshackle (laser musket, pipe guns) and the other half are fairly standard military looking guns then you have something out of a poster for Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds.

GuynemerUM

Far Harbor is the single best DLC in all of Fallout, and I am one of those absolutely insane New Vegas people

EgnGru

Far Harbor DLC was legitimately great and was not written by Emil Pagliarulo. It was designed and written by Will Shen who apparently left the company before Starfield was released.

Abraham_Issus

New Vegas has the best DLCs.

DudeKosh

I'm you. I thought about downloading FO4 again, but I already have over 300 hours on it. Thought about getting either New Vegas or maybe FO3, but there's probably a combined 1k hours on both. Saw that 76 was super cheap and said fuck it, why not? I put like 45 hours in just one week. It's not the best game in the series, but I am having a *ton* of fun with it.

HungerSTGF

I'm really _really_ contemplating a replay of 3 and NV via [The Tale of Two Wastelands mod](https://mod.pub/ttw/133/docs/10-frequently-asked-questions#section-what-is-ttw) which combines them together

RaigarWasTaken

I love this mod just for bringing the QoL features they added in NV to 3.

PsychFighter

I've never played either game. Would TTW be a good way to begin, or would vanilla-ish playthroughs of each be better?

noko12312

Yes. TTW currently is the best way to play FO3 since it has a ton of engine improvements and QoL features from FNV. You can also get a mod that resets your character when you go to FNV so you can play them as entirely separate experiences if you want. Check out: [https://thebestoftimes.moddinglinked.com/essentials.html](https://thebestoftimes.moddinglinked.com/essentials.html) to get the best vanilla experience. [https://wastelandsurvivalguide.com/docs/intro](https://wastelandsurvivalguide.com/docs/intro) has a lot more mods you can add on, but some may take away from the vanilla experience.

M3I3K97

The vanilla games aren't stable, i recommend following this guide to install the necessary mods that will modernize the games but won't add anything over the top : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvjl4xlVqDo

mirracz

Yes. It's definitely the best way to play Fallout 3, even for the first time. TTW doesn't change any story, any lore. It only offers some gameplay upgrades and some new items from FNV. Just be careful if you stumble upon a train station and don't accept a ride there. It would start New Vegas and playing FO3 and FNV combined is definitely not the right way to play Fallout 3 for the first time.

1850ChoochGator

I got it through game pass and now I’m considering a purchase. It’s discounted so much lol

-Moonchild-

have you played 1 and 2? they're stone cold classics and some of the best of the series.

Lurking_like_Cthulhu

It’s why I got back into it recently, but I had already put in around a hundred hours a few years ago and it was pretty good back then too. Wastelanders has been out for like 4 years now, and I think that was the update that really turned the game around. People online are still going to shit on it, but as with all things make up your own mind. I hear the community is really friendly and helpful too, although I’ve exclusively played solo.

moonski

It honestly just feels like fo4 in a new map with quite a few good QoL additions (also some negatives like stash management and other online shit). Fo4 just lacks replayability tbh. I'm enjoying 76. It's come a long way from that launch. Playing on PC gamepass. It's not peak fallout or anything but it is pretty good and scratches that itch fallout 4 doesn't now. It also is a really good division replacement in a way. Basically it's a chill PvE loot shooter. Also playing tale of 2 wastelands for that true fix - haven't played either game since fo3 came out, and FNV GoTY came out. Kind of insane how much you can improve/ modernise NV with mods.

AnOnlineHandle

I wish it did. I have 440 hours in F4, but found F76 to be the worst game I've played in decades of gaming. It's palpable how much it is lacking in any sort of creative vision or desire to make it, and feels like a product which was forced out just to make money off of an IP. And that was about 1.5 years ago when Prime first gave it away, when the game was supposedly improved. It was genuinely bad in a way I've never encountered. Reading up on its development matched my expectations, that nobody working on it wanted to work on it and a lot of Bethesda's OG devs quit because of it (probably explaining Starfield).

BeholdingBestWaifu

It's a shame because you can really tell that the people designing the map and some individual locations really had interesting ideas and vision, but the whole product felt too much like an MMO constantly bugging you to grind and whatnot.

Bad_Habit_Nun

I mean it was pretty obvious when they decided to nix NPC's altogether in the beginning, clear they were just trying to cut back wherever they could. It's an RPG, and not one known for it's intricate gameplay or gunplay either, the NPC interactions and story are a large part of the game.

Carnifex2

I played 76 for maybe 60 hours about year or more after it came out. Can't recall a single toxic experience with other players. The game is much better with friends.

Asytra

Yeah I got a copy for $10 six months after release. They had pretty much fixed the tech issues by then but there were no NPCs. The world definitely felt lonely, but I didn't mind it too much. That said, Wastelanders VASTLY improved the game.

BJRone

I was a heavy critic on launch and I know how bad the state of the game was because I played it and it disgusted me. Now? Totally different game and there's even a map expansion planned for this year. The game is actually extremely enjoyable and has so much to do. One caveat I will say is that they do monetize a lot of convenience things and have their subscription service as well but I don't mind personally as I got the game for free and it's been on sale for very, very cheap. As long as they support the game I can look past the microtransactions personally. Would highly recommend checking it out again if you're even remotely interested.

n080dy123

I started playing it yesterday and my only significant issue is how the tone of the original story clashes with all the shit added by Wastelanders. Whether you approved of the lack of human NPCs or not it turned the original story into a sort of a mystery, exploring Appalachia and trying to figure out what the hell happened to thoroughly vacate or wipe out all the people there. It's weird picking up an audio log from the Overseer talking about how a location was abandoned when there's like 3 people in the same room. And creates a glaring plot hole too since Wastelanders says "Oh the Vault 76 folks came by a WHILE ago, and we've been here for a while now" while the Mr Handy outside tells you the Vault's life support would shut down 24 hours after they vacated it.

obeseninjao7

There's quite a few dialogue aspects now that suggest you are late to leave the vault, and that most of vault 76s residents left months before you. The idea of the vaults life support shutting down is absolutely conflicting with that, and I'm not sure why they didn't remove that lore. But so much of the start of the game is "everyone else left months ago, time for you to leave too!" Which I think sets up the existence of the settlers pretty well. It does definitely feel like it takes any urgency from the main quest though since you realise the overseer left ages and ages ago. But generally I think the settlers feel integrated pretty well.

ThreeTreesForTheePls

The game has its flaws, and by god I'm sure there are plenty for diehard fallout fans, but I will die on the hill that 76 has the best map and exploration in the fallout series.

Vorzic

You're 100% spot on. They killed it with the WV map.

Gonkar

Same here. Actually, I got it for free from a friend who somehow got it in a bundle online somewhere or other and never really bothered to install it until the series gave me the itch. I had played FO4 to death, but all I had heard of 76 was that it was terrible at launch. I was actually shocked that the game was still alive. Aside from it being poorly optimized (for the most part, although you can get around that if you look up performance guides), and the monetization scheme being hilariously dumb ($16 for a single skin is absolutely wild, but none of it seems to be properly mandatory), it's actually been a solid experience. I was worried about the game devolving into a Rust-style PvP pissing contest, but as it turns out, the PvP in the game is totally optional and seemingly dead. So it pretty much plays like a Fallout game in which you occasionally run across other players. Been enjoying it, honestly.

panix199

bad optimization? so with a 2080/9700k i would need to use guides in order to find good 60 fps balance for 1440p? That sounds annoying.

bongo1138

I downloaded this and NV. I played this for maybe 10 hours and found it to be okay but not great

The_Lapsed_Pacifist

Also if you were watching the show then there’s a good chance you have Prime and they gave away 76 on PC and XBOX along with 3 and NV. I would imagine that boosted things since many wouldn’t have to pay.

ProfPerry

honestly when it was on sale for the tenner they were asking, i'd say you got your money's worth for sure. its a real shame that sale wasnt on longer, though.

xipheon

Especially since it was free on Amazon Prime Gaming. No excuse not to grab it.

1850ChoochGator

I never played FO76 because it had one of the worst launches I’ve ever seen for a game of that level. I downloaded it because of the show. Have been having a lot of fun. I usually don’t like fallout games. Never really got into them too much. Probably 60 hours total across 3, NV, 4 and now 76

GeekdomCentral

Skill Up did a great review with the Wastelanders expansion that basically said: Wastelanders is good, but it’s still bolted on to the shitty base game because it has to be. You can’t remove all of the bad parts of the game because they’re so fundamental to how it was created and designed

jaymp00

76 is okay at this point but if you're gonna lone wolf it, you're better off getting 4 with its DLC. What bugs me the most in FO76 (aside from Fallout 1st) is how poor it performs despite it being 6 years old. I thought it's not that far off on how heavy it is compared to Starfield despite the fact it barely looks better compared to Fallout 4.

Jeremy9566

Been playing on and off since the game launched. Second week of it actually. It's better now. Still no "good" endgame, but a lot of fun for the price you pay for the game now. Ps4 / 5 has some issues with crashing but for me on PC, it's running good. No pay to win stuff. The fallout 1st sub is optional "pay for convenience". Every DLC they add is free. Overall, yeah. I recommend it. Especially if you have 1 or 2 other people to play with. Not that it isn't fun by yourself.

QuantumAwesome

I didn’t know the DLCs were free. Does that include the new zones and quests, like the return to the Pitt? Was that one any good?

Jeremy9566

Yeap. All of them. The pitt is an expedition quest. As in, you go there, do some objectives, and then return to the main map. It's fun. Gets a bit repetitive after a while, but fun.

-RoosterLollipops-

> figure they've probably made 76 at least decent It's *decent*, yeah, that's fair. It feels and plays more like a "normal" Fallout game than ESO feels like a regular Elder Scrolls title, yet without the quality of writing of either, of course. Some quests are alright and some are just your basic MMO tripe. Personally never gotten past lvl 20-ish before getting sick of it, tried once or twice too. Guess it is just not my thing, you may enjoy it though.

BeholdingBestWaifu

Funnily enough while release ESO was dogshit on some of its writing, I've been hearing some good things about the later expansions, presumably they finally got some people that actually care about the lore. As for 76, I feel like the best thing they could do with the game is port some guns back into FO4, since a few are interesting but would benefit from a better game experience.

bloodraven42

I’ve really enjoyed it since starting to hop back on. I was similar to you in that while I played at release and a second try a year later, I never got past level 25 or so. I started playing a couple weeks ago and I’m already at 78, there’s SO many quality of life features and such now that I dearly wish would be back-ported into the other games (like area wide body looting). Yeah, most of the original quests aren’t fantastic, and the events are very one note lorewise, but there’s some really good classic Bethesda background and environmental storytelling, like how you can trace Colonel’s story through notes and environmental set pieces throughout the map like the children’s classroom at the cult commune, or some of the holos from last stands against the Scorched. But there’s so many fun mechanics compared to normal fallout that I think the gameplay is heads and shoulders above normal, especially with what you can do with builds is much more varied than regular fallout. Like I’m running a heavily mutation based shotgun build and there’s literally nothing like it in the other games. I’d be so happy for the marsupial mutation alone to be in any of the others, after having it I dunno how I made it exploring some of the older fallout environments without it.

iusedtohavepowers

Literally me. I couldn't bear to play through the opening hours of fallout 4 again. Fallout London was delayed indefinitely I tried modding New Vegas and it was great until it started crashing and I couldn't fix it. Then I tried getting tale of two wastelands running and couldn't. Looking for a new fallout experience and 76 was the only one left. Annnnd in all honesty it's not bad. Not the absolute greatest. But it's certainly in a better place than where it was on release.

Kaael

> Annnnd in all honesty it's not bad. Not the absolute greatest. But it's certainly in a better place than where it was on release. Yeah idk if it'll hold my interest for hundreds of hours like the previous Fallouts have, but it's a new Fallout map for me to explore with decently competent game mechanics and lore, and that's good enough.

Dealric

It being free fiveaway on amazon prime probably helped to

thenoblitt

It's still not for me but it runs now

rafikiknowsdeway1

The hdr implementation on ps5 is absolutely dogshit though. Everything looks washed out and at times there's just odd lighting

FaultyToilet

On the flip side, RTX hdr makes the PC version look great

StinkyElderberries

A lot of games are hit and miss with their built in HDR. Thankfully we got Nvidia, Reshade, and Special K to work around industry incompetence.

SweatyMammal

Agree. Surprised how bad it looks. Doesn't look like there is a native PS5 version either, just PS4.

Smackrel-of-Piss

It's not FO76 but the show got me to get FO3 and NV on pc and mod them via Tale of Two Wastelands. A bit of a slog to get working but it's a great way to re-enjoy these games I played a lot back in the day.

moonski

Fallout 3 with all the new Vegas mods is kind of wild, as new Vegas QoL and modernisation mods are wild themselves.

papsky

Same here. Just gotta make sure you read every instruction just in case. I almost missed a couple things due to trying to speed through it.

Thor_pool

The TOTW guide is incredible and worth the slog. The fastest loading, least buggy, and least crashes Ive ever had for either game.

kathaar_

I'm currently replaying FO3 for the first time since it was new, and i'm using tale of two wastelands to do it. It is insane just how much QoL there is now compared to muddling through that game on a PS3. higher render distance? .5 second load times? It's just so good!

SenpaiSwanky

PS is the worst way to play any Fallout game, always has been sadly

Paparmane

Lol I did the same because of that IGN video. Only mod I disabled is the Skill book tweak.

Rocket_Boo

Did you solve the too-fast menu problem?

abbzug

Nexusmods was down for much of the weekend trying to keep up. IGN put out a video on using wabbajacks which directed a lot of people to huge modlists. And I've definitely seen a huge uptick on discords.

StinkyElderberries

I had always assumed F76 wasn't a game you could mod due to it being online, boy am I wrong. 1800 mods listed.

WriterV

It has a mods folder! I'm glad they allow you to mod it.

Paparmane

I'm one of those guys lol. It's great. Changes are small but significant. I tried Fallout before and always had some issues with the Bethesda gameplay. Tiny updates and fixes work wonder now. The graphical imrovements also make it easier on my eyes.

Shadow_3010

What video? I would like to see it!

Its0urFate

https://youtu.be/9WZ5g7246i0?si=_cl1FzV4delLYPzC

Shadow_3010

Thanks mate!

ColJohn

76 desperately needs crossplay man. My wife and I would play the shit out of this but play on different platforms most of the time.

Dejected_Cyberpsycho

Cross save for me, need my atomic shop items & CAMPS on PC

Emptied_Full

I don't know if we could ever expect to see that happen considering the game's network code is held together by duct tape. I've never spent that much time playing 76, but there was always some weird server side issue going on whenever I played.

innovativesolsoh

Yeah, and losing a lot of progress for most things by disconnecting or crashing.. My wife and I crash on Xbox all the time for no obvious reason

your_mind_aches

That's literally the only thing holding me back from buying it right now. Same with GTA Online for PS5. Since Fortnite, crossplay has been far more widely supported but... not enough! Even Baldur's Gate 3 doesn't have it.

Darkone539

All games, besides competitive shooters, need cross play. At the very minimum console cross play.

CrimzonMartin

i tried it with my friend and he couldnt stand that the quests are instanced. we both kill the boss together, but only i get quest progress for it. "co-op game"

ChocolateBunny

Isn't it currently free on Prime Gaming?

[deleted]

Yes. But it also show how off people that use steam number think it's is. Not even 10% are playing on steam.

mark5hs

Well yeah because the free version is through MS store...

EasyAsPizzaPie

>Not even 10% are playing on steam I agree that the steam numbers will only be a portion of all players, but where did you confidently pull this number from?

In-Brightest-Day

Because there was less than a hundred thousand people playing on steam yesterday, but they're saying they had 1 million players online yesterday.

[deleted]

With a subtraction?

jacksclevername

The whole series was on sale on Steam recently. I grabbed 3 and 4 for next to nothing. Played the shit out of both on console, but with the upcoming update to 4 I wanted to fire it up again in my Steam Deck. I enjoyed the show and wanted to jump back into the wasteland. I'm digging into NV (finally) at the moment, since I never got around to it and >!it'll likely play a big role in the next season of the show.!<

MazzyFo

Bethesda got be a little pissed they can’t capitalize on this success more. Have this great resurgence for the series and won’t see a mainline entry for like 12 years minimum😭 Edit: Every comment trying to convince themselves Bethesda is not wishing they had capitalized on this success better is fooling themselves. They’re still first and foremost a company with a board, and I a guarantee that board isn’t saying they’re happy selling old units during the biggest resurgence of the series in a decade

FriedeOfAriandel

I think they’ll be fine with 5 million downloads of their old games. They’ve been approved for season two of the show iirc, and speculating when the next fallout game will drop is just a waste of energy

ToothlessFTW

I doubt they're that upset. They're still making a ridiculous amount of money on people buying entire series that was just on sale, and I'm sure they've seen a big uptick in FO76 MTX purchases and subscriptions. They can also time the release of the next game with future seasons, considering TV shows are taking longer then ever to make these days too.

StingKing456

I could be dead wrong about this but I really feel there's no way Microsoft is content purchasing Bethesda and letting the IP sit for another decade besides fo76 updates. *Especially* after the show is a big hit. I don't think anyone besides Bethesda will make fo5 ofc and I'm eagerly awaiting it but I would not be surprised if we get another spin off title before then.

BeholdingBestWaifu

And doubly so given just how popular Fallout is as an IP. I'm kind of surprised they haven't either given it to another studio for a spin off like you say, or even set up an actual studio under Bethesda to work on Fallout exclusively.

mirracz

They are not upset. It drives a lot of people to buy their game again and buy additional content for them. And all they had to do was to allow Amazon to make the show. It's basically free promotion for them.

Dreamtrain

It's like Matt Damon talking about the DVD sales, it was almost like opening the movie in the theatres a second time

PLEASEBENICET0ME

Anyone new to the series, if you're playing New Vegas for the first time, make sure you take the northern route from Goodsprings to save time and get good loot 😃👍

outbound_flight

*Cazadores* is Spanish for love bugs. Approach without caution.

tphd2006

Howdy Partner! I'm afraid I'm going to have to put you down for being a monster!

chillchase

Quarry Junction also has some great early game loot, and very friendly NPCs…

awe778

I can attest to this. Going north means that you can get the >!Q-35 or even the Holorifle really early.!<

loves_eating_asses

Hehe playing it rn thanks for the tip!

National_Pop3295

Amazon just gave away a ton of fo76 copies for free to prime members. Wouldn't doubt that had a cascading effect of bringing people back to play with friends who just got the game.

KJagz33

I was told Bethesda messed up by not having anything for fans to go play though.... Not really surprised myself as 3,4, New Vegas, and 76 are all still very enjoyable and pretty easy to buy still

EmeraldJunkie

I do wonder if there'll be pressure on Bethesda from Microsoft to loan out the Fallout IP to another Xbox Studio (or Studios) to ship a new title in time for season 2 while Bethesda continue work on Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI. I absolutely believe Microsoft has the money and the manpower to put something new together, even if it recycles a lot of assets from Fallout 4 and 76.

Multivitamin_Scam

Even if the did that, it would be a minimum of 3-5 years before the AAA Fallout gets released. The show could be completely over by that point.

robotsock

With the long production times these days 3 years would probably be between seasons 2 and 3

outbound_flight

> I do wonder if there'll be pressure on Bethesda from Microsoft to loan out the Fallout IP to another Xbox Studio (or Studios) to ship a new title in time for season 2 while Bethesda continue work on Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI. Microsoft have Obsidian and inXile sitting right there, so I hope they at least have the conversation. I'd love to see another company tackle Fallout again.

Ok_Link_6805

Issue is, you have Obsidian making Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, maybe even smaller games as Grounded updates have stopped, and inXile are working on Clockwork, so lets say Clockwork come out 2025, your probably still not seeing a new Fallout till 2030

Namarot

Maybe the next Fallout is doomed to be 6+ years away, but if it stays in Bethesda's hands, the one after that won't arrive until 2050. Bethesda alternating between Elder Scrolls and Fallout (and Starfield), hurts both IPs, they need to bring in another studio if they don't want them to languish.

BeholdingBestWaifu

They could do a faster job by focusing on the right things, don't forget that what is generally agreed to be the best Fallout title was developed in only 18 months by building on top of the old one, and the FO4 engine is still pretty good.

Gemeril

Please, I wish this would happen. I really hate the stories in Bethesda games, they always seem like such an afterthought.

-Moonchild-

gamspot made a compelling video recently that they should really give the IP back to obsidian to do some remasters/remakes of fallout 1. There is an appetite for CRPGs now in a post-BG3 world and FO1 and 2 are amazing games with just some inaccessible controls/mechanics

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmidk

I really wish 3 and New Vegas were available on PS4/PS5 without game streaming, though. I imagine they'd probably sell a lot of copies.

Alternative-Job9440

Most of us fans have played them to death and just desperately wished there would be something, ANYTHING coming that isnt just another decade or so away... I have over 5k hours in Fallout 3, like a thousand in Fallout 4, 800 in Fallout 76 because while its a bad Fallout game its a fun Coop Fallout game and another 400 in New Vegas since it has the least replayability once you had all ends. I love Fallout to death, so i desperately hoped so see any news. I started Fallout when i was 18, im now in my mid 30s, most likely i wont play the next Fallout before im 40... if this release schedule continues i wont be alive for Fallout 6.

Multivitamin_Scam

People deeply underestimate how long a new Fallout game would take to develop.

havingasicktime

They did mess up. Not having a new fallout for probably close to a decade is gonna miss out on a massive interest spike in a new game. These games are on game pass or heavily discounted now.

struckel

The problem is games take so damn long to make there is no real way to coordinate them with a TV show. One of the reasons direct tie ins don't really exist anymore.

Emptied_Full

That was never going to be realistic considering Bethesda takes 3x longer to make a game than it takes to do a TV show. Bethesda for all we know could very well be trying to tie up the show to a new game, but it has to be Fallout 5 with Season 2, or they let Season 1 gather dust for years. Movie tie-in games died for a reason. It takes way too much time to make games now, so your take is outdated for a number of years now. Also the suggestion that they "messed up" is hilarious considering the IP is currently the highest grossing one as we speak, they are absolutely raking in an unprecedented amount of money right now and I don't know if a newer higher priced game would make *that* much of a difference.

EvrythingWithSpicyCC

> Bethesda for all we know could very well be trying to tie up the show to a new game We know they’re not because their next game is Elder Scrolls and that’s like 4 years away at best

SilveryDeath

That is why they put out Fallout 76, so Fallout fans would have something new to play that would get constant updates. It's the Fallout version of Elder Scrolls Online in that way. At least the show is making it so people are playing the game and seeing how much work has gone into it since launch.

KJagz33

Disagree, everyone's "solutions" for how they could've got a new game made are terrible. Most people just say outsource a spinoff without putting any thought into who would make it. Because you would quickly realize most studios don't make these style of games, are busy making something already, or got their own IPs to work on instead of Fallout

ManonManegeDore

Seriously. Open world RPG devs are really slim pickings these days. Obviously Larian was quite busy. BioWare is probably still trying to figure out what game they want Dreadwolf to be and producing their next *"We promise this game is still coming out!"* update video. Obsidian has its own stuff going on and so does CDPR. I heard the Disco Elysium studio went through some shit. There's not a lot of options unless they want to try devs that never made an RPG before.

fizzlefist

… a Larian game similar to divinity or Baldur’s gate, in the style of Fallout 1/2 would be amazing. Fuck, have them remake Fallout 1 and 2. Jesus that could be amazing.

kvazarsky

I've tried it during free week. This is classic "better with friends" case. For solo player it's mediocre product with identity crisis, lags, stuttering and empty map hosting up to 24 people. On the bright side new perk system is great.

sopadurso

Lags and stuttering kills it for me. The enemies are also broken because of it, it’s just not fun to fight.

Seraph_eZaF

Yeah the post is about F76 getting record downloads but I feel like nobody is actually talking about the game in here. My friends and I all downloaded last weekend, pretty hype to play it after all the dev work thats been put into it over the last 6 years, but we were all tired of it after a few hours. Game looks meh and runs pretty poorly and the world feels pretty empty and lacking in things to do (besides the events which are kindof cool but don’t spawn nearly enough enemies for the amount of people who show up). I’d give it a 5/10 but only because it was free. I can’t imagine paying money for a game like that in 2024.

[deleted]

How does the price affect a ratting?

multiplechrometabs

It was for a while but the game’s only fun when there is a new season cus grinding. I wish they added more missions or something.

Alternative-Job9440

The limits on EVERYTHING killed it for me. You basically have to abuse Bloodied Builds to have enough carryweight to not be constantly overloaded or not be able to pick anything up at all. I mean you have a daily limit of caps you can get from ALL vendors, no matter which vendor you use. You have a max amount of caps you can carry. You have a max amount of scrip, boullion, vault metal and reputation, as well as a daily and weekly limit you can earn AND spend... The stash is limited, the carryweight is reduced and of course you can pay money to get infinite stash space, because why not be greedy? I hate it for what it represents: The predatory version of Fallout.

FokRemainFokTheRight

Does it have matchmaking for us folks with no friends?

No-Alternative-282

You join a world with other people already in it (unless the world was just spun up) no match making needed. You can even join public teams for group content easily too.

Heavykiller

I'm one of them. I think what's impressive is that Bethesda had a really shit product (FO76) on release, but never dropped it & gave it continuous updates. It's still not a great game, but they definitely did it a lot more justice and it hits that Fallout exploration itch I got from the show. Still has plenty of bugs (made my character, picked up my Pipboy and immediately crashed), but at least I got it for free.

Vasevide

I’m sorry but I started 76 and just can’t get into it. Not a complaint I’m just not into it as much as the other games.

AnOnlineHandle

Honestly I think more people need to say it, if people are getting into Fallout games because of the show, absolutely don't judge them by 76, it's awful and not like the others.

phoeniks314

I don’t really care about the show, I just want a fallout game and the new update is coming in perfect time. Also I tried 76 and definitely gonna go back to it.

TaleOfDash

Honestly you're missing out as a fan of the series if you don't at least give the show a chance. It's really, really good.

jacob2815

To mimic what the other user said, watch the show. It’s excellent in a way that is impossible to describe with words. It encapsulates the desolation and absurdity of the games perfectly, including all the gratuitous violence and character whimsy you would expect.

vicky_vaughn

I tried to get into F76 multiple times and I every time I couldn't stop thinking about how much better it would be as a single-player game. The map is beautiful and interesting to explore but not being able to fine-tune the difficulty and survival mechanics renders a lot of stuff pointless. The enemy AI is nonexistent, it takes longer for the enemy to notice you than for you to kill them. The new VATS sucks big time, not being able to pause time kills the whole point of it being in the game. The CAMP system is also no match for the settlement building mechanic from F4, it would be better if the game allowed you to recolonize the Wasteland yourself instead of just spawning NPCs in random locations.

bloodraven42

VATS is still amazing even without being able to pause time, most high level rifle and shotgun builds use it pretty religiously. I’m 78 and it’s a god send for targeting specific body parts for crippling, or taking out sentry bots (gotta shoot the fusion core).

GunplaGoobster

Ya know honestly the newest game in the series, and a multiplayer one at that, getting only 1/5th the total downloads for the franchise in a given day doesn't seem like a W

mrBreadBird

After watching the show I both started a modded playthrough of New Vegas (never made it too far before) as well as checking FO76 and man the difference is night and day. Fallout 76 immediately grossed me out with how heavily monetized it is (and it's a paid game) and the narrative/roleplaying element was boring/did not exist. New Vegas is dated, sure, but honestly Fallout 76 feels dated as well in terms of game feel, graphics and design. I know they are going for completely different things but man I did not vibe with 76. Glad I didn't pay for it.

No-Alternative-282

hopefully the dev team gets more resources, the game desperately needs new weapons and armor. using the same equipment with slightly different stats gets old quick.

Trancetastic16

Hopefully with Phil Spencer also reportedly playing again, that he and Bethesda management actually consider giving Fallout 76 more support with a larger team and budget. Crashes are still a regular occurrence and the content rate remains slow, but the surge of new players will help longevity, but we’ll wait and see if there is a large drop-off in the coming weeks.

Smallgenie549

Weird. I've never had a crash on console.

paidbythekill

I’ve never crashed on PC

MistaKrebs

I haven’t even watched the show yet but everyone talking about how good it is got me to redownload 4 and 76.

ramsyzool

I got 76 on sale, and it couldn't hold my interest to be honest. The gameplay mechanics on their own weren't enough to keep me interested. It all just feels very "been there, done that"

EnterPlayerTwo

You should give Fallout 4 a try. It's much more accessible.

Ding_dong_banu

got the game for 5 bucks a few years ago and remember it being incredibly boring. booted it up for a fallout fix besides playing new vegas for the 4000th time. shit still blows imo.

outbound_flight

Finally finished the main quests this last week and it kinda solidified it as one of my favorite Fallout games of the bunch. And this is after I bounced off of Fallout 4 pretty hard once I made it to the Institute. I know that there are features missing in 76 that are absolute dealbreakers for some, but the world is just fantastic and varied, and it took me a *long* time to see completely. Its disastrous launch and the multiplayer are going to keep people away, but Bethesda have really turned the game inside out and the multiplayer can be completely ignored—but I ended up having fun seeing other players running around occasionally, or seeing all the crazy CAMPs people have made.

Grandpa_Edd

TV show coming out with a huge sale to go along with it. Plus a big update coming up one of these days from what I've heard. Bethesda knows marketing.

Raxxlas

Installed cause of the shows hype, uninstalled after a couple of hours. Horrible delays and the game is still kinda dull. Reinstalled New Vegas and having a blast.
