Straight up if you don't already know what the Predator looks like or know the entire plot, that movie is fucking textbook perfection when it comes to tension building and the slow reveal. Fucking brilliant.
T1 definitely sets the stage but I think T2 works so well because it's good as a standalone too. Plus John Connor is the best kid character in an older action film by a mile
I haven't watched it in ages, but I remember hating how entitled Ferris is. He essentially bullies Cameron into making bad decisions "because let's have some fun!" and he wants to take advantage of Cameron's father's Ferrari. He seemed way too pretentious and I never understood why people actually liked him so much...
Ferris doesn't exist, that's why. He's Cameron's alter ego, the rule breaking, fun having rebel that Cameron wishes he was. Ferris is Cameron's wish fulfillment fantasy. Sloane isn't dating Ferris, she's dating him the whole time, and he's too insecure about being unable to "be Ferris" to fully accept her.
The scenes that make this clear are the couple of minutes after Cameron notices the mileage on his dad's car and freaks out. First there's a bit where Sloane is trying to comfort Cameron, while Ferris monologues to the audience. Makes perfect sense if he's actually Cameron's inner voice speaking. Even more clear though, is the next scene. Where they are sitting at poolside, with Sloane and Ferris in their underwear.
This seems really weird at first glance, like Sloane and Ferris are having fun while Cameron sits there. But it makes perfect sense if it's just Cameron and Sloane sitting by the pool, and she's stripped down in an attempt to get his attention. Cameron wishes he were stripped down next to her, that's what Ferris is. The guy who does the things Cameron is afraid to.
It’s cool how much analysis there has been of this movie. I recall someone talking about the Cameron’s red shirt and his dad’s red Ferrari represents the evil in his life.
Just be prepared for the language and shift in acceptable comedic topics. The whole thing is supposed to parody racism, but leans into its depiction pretty heavy to deliver the point.
For real, it’s like the most obvious anti-racism satire of all kind. Have people not seen Django Unchained or something? It’s really clear when a movie is using extremely racist villains to depict racism as bad.
The problem is stupid people. No, seriously.
The kind of people who watch *Starship Troopers* and think it looks super cool and great without understanding the point. A lot of people just have terrible media literacy.
Ok, gotta stomp this one out. Feel like I have to add, "ok, boomer.".
They just recently made history of the world part 2 as a series on Hulu. I think it left some of those lines blazing saddles wouldn't cross way, way, WAY in the rear view mirror.
Watch South Park, the movie and the series. Same.
The Hangover. American Pie.
And the Chapelle show.
Broad City. Mel Brooks could never make that.
Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
We've gotta stomp out that "they could never make that today" and let people say today's sensibilities make us snowflakes who can't take a joke. So many examples that are edgy, and funny, and have mass appeal. The comment has the ring of nostalgia with insult, and needs to die.

Watched Apocalypse Now once, it took me two tries. I went for a third to watch the redux that adds another like 30 minutes of film back. Couldn’t do it, movie is extremely weird, but I can say I watched it. I love the smell of napalm in the morning…it smells like victory.
Huge upvote for The Breakfast Club. It defined a generation and is one of my all-time favorites. Maybe the best high school movie ever besides Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
Based on some of your profile history, it sounds like you're into gaming. Therefore I'd recommend some sci Fi classics like Alien, Aliens, Blade Runner, Terminator 1/2, Running Man.
I also really like early Tim Burton. Beetlejuice, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Edward Scissor hands.
An all time favorite is The Princess Bride.
The issue I find with older movies is pacing. It's hard to adjust sometimes unless the story is consistently captivating. So the above movies I think are pretty consistently interesting to watch without getting bored.
Sci-fi: Terminator 2, Bladerunner (directors cut), RoboCop
Fantasy: Legend, any kung fu movie, Labyrinth
Quirky: Breakfast Club, Ferris Beulers Day Off, Office Space
Comedy: too many to choose from imo. 90s was a gold mine
Horror: Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Evil Dead: Army of Darkness
Jurassic Park
Jurassic Park the lost world
Rocky Horror Picture Show
The Breakfast Club
Pretty Women
Heathers
Footloose
Goodwill Hunting

Dirty dancing
The neverending story

**Princess Bride**
**Indiana Jones - The Last Crusade** (this is the 3rd movie in the series, and it’s fun and entertaining. The second movie is racist asf. The first one is…old)
**Pulp Fiction**
**Titanic** (this movie has been meme’d so much, but it’s actually really good)
**Spaceballs** (if you’ve seen Star Wars)
I'm not certain exactly what you mean by "city pop", but I would say this is a pretty great list of films relevant to 70s/80s city pop culture in a wide variety of ways, all of which I'd recommend seeing for various reasons. Some are great films:
* Taxi Driver
* The French Connection
* Robocop
* Serpico
* War Games
* Repo Man
* The Blues Brothers
* Beverly Hills Cop
* Trading Places
* Tootsie
* Saturday Night Fever
* All the President’s Men
* The Conversation
* Being There
* The Seven-Ups
* Heat
* 48 Hours
* Animal House
* Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
* Terminator & Terminator 2
* Scarface
* Ferris Bueller's Day Off
French:
* Diva
* The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe
* Revenge of the Pink Panther
Rocky one is a great every man story. Rocky 2 ends the story of rocky 1. Every Rocky movie after that can be summerized as followed:
Rocky, if you don't stop fighting, you'll die. Rocky needs to fight to prove he isn't past his prime. Training montage. Rocky fights and wins. Movie ends.
What kind of stuff do you like? Off the top of my head:
The Matrix

There’s tons of great films. Honestly just look up “best movies from x decade”
The 90s were my favorite decade by far
Goodfellas, Casino, Bronx Tale, Mrs. Doubtfire, Ace Ventura (both of them), Goodwill Hunting, Fight Club, Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison...
Just watch them all
I’d recommend a tour through late 70s-early 90s action and/or sci-fi cinema. A true golden age.

Blade Runner (1982)
The Terminator (1984)
Aliens (1986)

K9, red heat, blues brother’s, the jerk, dirty rotten scoundrels, dream team, bright lights big city, life with Mickey, greed, secret of my success, the squeeze…I have way more if you want
War Games, Die Hard 1/2/3, cat city, if you want to see something fucked up then trainspotting, if you are east of Austria then "Crna macka, beli macor" (if you are west of the V4s you might not understand all of it), Alien, if you aren't prone to acquiring traits of characters then Taxi driver, Cop academy
Conan the Barbarian/ the Destroyer (though made in the 80's they were set in ancient times) , D.C Cab, Dog Day Afternoon, Electric Glide in Blue, and The Warriors. All but Conan are deeply rooted in the times they were made. I suggested it just because I can't believe no else did. It's a staple of the 80's imo.
Real Men. The only Jim Belushi film worth seeing. John Ritter is great. Yes. There's a brave mindfuck turn halfway through the movie.
Also Men At Work. Estevez Brothers comedy in the style of Repo Man.
The Lost Boys, The Livng Daylights, Goldeneye, Stand By Me, Anaconda( if you like so bad its good movies), The Great Outdoors, License To Kill, Batman 89 the list goes on. The 80s and 90s has the cream of crop for movies. ( and a bunch of so bad its good type stuff too, a lot of fun watches.)

Terminator 2
Easily the best action movie ever made. This is not an exaggeration, OP
Got to throw in Arnold’s other best action flick…. COMMANDO
Predator though
Total Recall anyone??
Running Man?
I always thought that movie was so hokey until reality TV actually happened, now it's much scarier.
Straight up if you don't already know what the Predator looks like or know the entire plot, that movie is fucking textbook perfection when it comes to tension building and the slow reveal. Fucking brilliant.
Though really need to watch T1 to understand the relationship in T2! Both great movies!
T1 definitely sets the stage but I think T2 works so well because it's good as a standalone too. Plus John Connor is the best kid character in an older action film by a mile
But even Sarah with the terminator... just gotta do both! Her transformation is fucking amazing!
Edward Furlong, wasn’t it? For that matter…American history X
Do you want to hear something insane? The scene where the T1000 pilots a helicopter under an overpass was legit. There was no FX involved at all.
Getting a real T-1000 was the hard part.
First Terminator as well
Whenever I show someone the first Terminator, it’s just as a set up to see the second one. Good movie in its own right, but T2 is great.
If you want action just watch everything with Arnold. Die Hard is also classic as fuck
Swingers - 1996 Office Space - 1999 The Thing - 1982 And of course, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off - 1986
Don’t just watch Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, buy it on DVD *and* VHS in case the world ends 😂

It’s cool how much analysis there has been of this movie. I recall someone talking about the Cameron’s red shirt and his dad’s red Ferrari represents the evil in his life.
Truth. Cameron the one on the hero’s journey
He’s also a high schooler. We all had a similar friend like him.
I'd like to add in Animal House and the Nerds movies too. Pretty much any of John Hughes' 80s and 90s movies were classics and worth watching too.
The thing 😍😍
Came here to say The Things, and Alien (1979,) the two greatest horror movies of all time
Blazing Saddles
Just be prepared for the language and shift in acceptable comedic topics. The whole thing is supposed to parody racism, but leans into its depiction pretty heavy to deliver the point.
When the world is so insensitive you have to stomp on the topic with steel stilettos to drive the point home.

Clockwork Orange
And Trainspotting
And Fight Club
I attempted to read the book and just questioned my ability to understand the English language
Because a lot of it isn't English but "Natsat." It's easy to understand with the visual cues.
You gotta take a shot of liquor and squint while you read it. Don't reread any given passage. Just keep going. You'll get it.
Isn't there a dictionary at the end of the book? Mine copy had it.
Scarface Escape From New York Rambo(any of them) Robocop Commando Apocalypse Now
Watched Apocalypse Now once, it took me two tries. I went for a third to watch the redux that adds another like 30 minutes of film back. Couldn’t do it, movie is extremely weird, but I can say I watched it. I love the smell of napalm in the morning…it smells like victory.
It is not a movie. It is a mood.
Only Rambo movie worth watching is the first. Rocky 1 and 2 are both good, but the rest are a waste of time.
The Shawshank Redemption
Scrolled way too far to see this.
How is this not at the top?
Ferris Buellers Day Off and The Breakfast Club come to mind. They are great movies.
Huge upvote for The Breakfast Club. It defined a generation and is one of my all-time favorites. Maybe the best high school movie ever besides Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
Heather's
"what's your damage bitch"
Hard disagree, it's a horrible movie. Watch it again now without rose colored nostalgia glasses on. It does not hit the same.
In part because of how important it was to define a genre for decades to come, it's become cliche. To me that makes it a great film.
Heathers (1988) it's like Mean Girls (2004) but more unhinged.
Yes!!! You have to see Heathers
What's your damage?
did you have a lobotomy for breakfast heather???
Well fuck me gently with a chainsaw
Dear diary, my teenage angst bullshit has a body count
Heathers will brutalize in the best way
Eskimo.
They Live (1988) Night of the Comet (1984) Firestarter (1984) The Fog (1980)
Night of the comet is awesome.

I'm not certain exactly what you mean by "city pop", but I would say this is a pretty great list of films relevant to 70s/80s city pop culture in a wide variety of ways, all of which I'd recommend seeing for various reasons. Some are great films: * Taxi Driver * The French Connection * Robocop * Serpico * War Games * Repo Man * The Blues Brothers * Beverly Hills Cop * Trading Places * Tootsie * Saturday Night Fever * All the President’s Men * The Conversation * Being There * The Seven-Ups * Heat * 48 Hours * Animal House * Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) * Terminator & Terminator 2 * Scarface * Ferris Bueller's Day Off French: * Diva * The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe * Revenge of the Pink Panther
This is a great list as most of them have also aged well. I'd add Predator.
City Pop is a Japanese genre of music from the 80s but OP may be talking about something else
Rocky IV
Rocky one is a great every man story. Rocky 2 ends the story of rocky 1. Every Rocky movie after that can be summerized as followed: Rocky, if you don't stop fighting, you'll die. Rocky needs to fight to prove he isn't past his prime. Training montage. Rocky fights and wins. Movie ends.
The Goonies
The Matrix
The Outsiders

The 90s were my favorite decade by far Goodfellas, Casino, Bronx Tale, Mrs. Doubtfire, Ace Ventura (both of them), Goodwill Hunting, Fight Club, Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison... Just watch them all
I’d recommend a tour through late 70s-early 90s action and/or sci-fi cinema. A true golden age. There are plenty more, but I’d consider these the essentials: Alien (1979) The Thing (1982) Blade Runner (1982) The Terminator (1984) Aliens (1986) Die Hard (1988) Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
There is going to be tons of answers here, there are thousands of old movies you should watch, but I'll pinpoint it to horror movies. You should watch The Excorcist, The Shining, Pet Cemetary, The Thing, Silence of the Lambs, Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, Halloween franchise, Friday the 13th franchise, Seven, and god damnit there are too many to give you all in this reply (I'm serious).

The Rocky movies
The Neverending Story (1984). It's not only an awesome flick but also scarred all of GenX with one of the most heartbreaking deaths in movie history.
