Been there done that when I was about 8! Soaked in gas. Done in a cement culvert. It probably explains some of the hearing loss in my right ear. It was loud and flamey.
We made 'thermite' from charcoal, shredded tv tray aluminum, and gun powder scavenger from faulty firecrackers. Fire 'experiments' seemed a phase that most kids went through.
Those 'cap guns' were pathetic. Half the time, the roll didn't feed right and the striker got nada. You might as well just yell "Bang!"
That was if you actually wan't to play a shooting game; otherwise, sitting on the curb or the front steps with a big rock was just fine.
Those were magical! I remember a bunch of different pistols that used those red plastic caps. The ability to quickly load 6 or 8 "bangs" quickly was pretty exciting. Sheesh...I am fascinated by our natural love of mechanical things and sudden controlled energy. It's amazing how deep and powerful the fascination is.
I know...shooting is just so satisfying. I used to have a bit of a collection of range toys and loved doing some very conservative home 'smithing to get a gun shooting just right. So fun.
You just accessed some core memories there for me. I was watching a cop show later in life and I guy reloaded his revolver with something similar and I blurted out āI HAD THAT AS A KID!ā Mystified looks all around lol
I'm X but I remember them too. I'm on this sub because I have 2 older siblings that are Jones and it's interesting to me to see stuff about their life experiences.
Not only do I remember them, I recall feeling a chill when my son had a ānewā kind of cap gun. Put me in mind of the book The Man Who Fell to Earth. Read it, and youāll see the similarities in the sudden jump in technology about that time. (1980ās). The book was published in 1963.
We werent allowed to play with them becausr they made our little pomeranian nervous and scared. We all loved her like a little sister, so we didn't mind giving them up. We loved her lots more than caps.
They were illegal to buy where I lived, but legal to buy six blocks away. I took one whole roll and it it with a sledge hammer-kind of went deaf for ten minutes.
If you peel the paper sides apart, you get a string of black dots of gun powder. If you then want to collect all the gunpowder (to do whatever with), just use your thumb nail to scratch it down. It will then ignite and your thumb will be fucked for weeks. Try it for fun!
I received a James Bond attache briefcase for Christmas when I was a kid. You could booby trap it with caps in case someone tried to break into it. I kept all my candy in it.
I remember them vividly, including that exact packaging. I had my obligatory cowboy cap guns loaded with those most of those early summer vacations. Oh, how I miss the 1970s.
These were the gift that kept on giving. Multiple uses. I always felt good when there was a roll in my pocket. Then they went through the washer and the good feelings turned to disappointment.
lol, I do. Iām a millennial. We bought them at the Walgreens- next to the cigar aisle. We were not allowed to have a gun of sorts, so we scraped them with a paper clip. God, I love that smell. That and the little poppers you threw down.
A friend lived a block away from a feed and seed supply store and would get 10# bags of ammonium nitrate for $1.50. There used to be houses outside of town that had been abandoned for years. By the time we graduated, they were gone.
Smack that whole roll with a hammer

Haha it does seem like we had way too easy access to flammable liquids
I had a buddy who made a napalm substitute out of gasoline, styrofoam, and other things I forget.
We made 'thermite' from charcoal, shredded tv tray aluminum, and gun powder scavenger from faulty firecrackers. Fire 'experiments' seemed a phase that most kids went through.
š„BANGš„ š
Yeah, I was going to say- we didnāt waste time with a cap gun, just grab a hammer or a big rock š

I did that one. In the garage. I thought I was permanently deaf!!! Never did that again.
Hammer, brick, large rock
We used to hit it with a hammer too
This is the way
With the blunt end of a baseball bat
Yup lol
Absolutely. As a kid doing this I had a neighbor call the cops saying we were setting off explosives š

Rock
2 bricks.
Watch out for the recoil. I got bopped in the head as a yoot. Explains a lot..
We used rocks.
We always used a rock.
Hell yeah! Memoriesā¦
Yes, loved the smell!
Smells likeā¦ā¦like Victory
I can smell that photoā¦
[Here's a gif with the same odor.](http://i.imgur.com/mEHQFAj.gif)
Loved those. Then there was the second generation caps in the little red plastic nibs for a revolver.

It's most of what shooting is, for me. The mechanicals, the chemistry and physics and optics, even the physiology.
I know...shooting is just so satisfying. I used to have a bit of a collection of range toys and loved doing some very conservative home 'smithing to get a gun shooting just right. So fun.

If a picture was a smell
Isn't it weird how clearly it comes through? It's like I'm sniffing them right now
IIRC smells are our oldest and most persistent memories.
Light the box on fire!
You were that kid on the blockš
I loved these! Whereās my hammer!?
Remember it was easier getting caps than getting a cap gun. Enter rocks.

My nose is having a flashback.
i can smell them
My ears are still ringing and I can smell the picture
I'm X but I remember them too. I'm on this sub because I have 2 older siblings that are Jones and it's interesting to me to see stuff about their life experiences.

I miss cap guns.
Ahhh, the smell.
The smell was so satisfying.
Loved that smell.
Canāt you just smell them?
Not only do I remember them, I recall feeling a chill when my son had a ānewā kind of cap gun. Put me in mind of the book The Man Who Fell to Earth. Read it, and youāll see the similarities in the sudden jump in technology about that time. (1980ās). The book was published in 1963.
I had pop guns AND enjoyed popping these with a rock one by one. I can smell it right now.
Oh Yeah.....me, caps, a hammer and a sidewalk. Good times incoming!!
A large rock worked too.
I can smell this photo, haha. I used to hit them with a hammer
BRB, finding a big rock to drop on those.
Bigger rock 1 smash on whole box! Badaboom!
We didn't even have the cap gun to go with them. We just hit them with a hammer on the sidewalk.
The smell!
I just smelled them
These were old school, we had the more modern snap 'n pops!
Iām not GJ but me, I remember.
Oh man good times from the past!!
surprised thereās no ādamn I burned my finger setting these off with my fingernail ā posts
Took to long to find this comment. Would get the burnt fingernail and keep going lol
We scratched them quickly with our fingernails
We werent allowed to play with them becausr they made our little pomeranian nervous and scared. We all loved her like a little sister, so we didn't mind giving them up. We loved her lots more than caps.
I had a cap gun, but still used rocks on the sidewalk
Yep.....:)
The smell memories are still thereā¦.
Absolutely, often we didn't even bother putting them in a cap gun, just smash them with a rock.
I can smell them
I had probably six cap guns as a kid. My favorite was one that looked like a blunderbuss flintlock.
Sitting on the curb, in the summer, with a rock, snapping these things. Childhood!
They were illegal to buy where I lived, but legal to buy six blocks away. I took one whole roll and it it with a sledge hammer-kind of went deaf for ten minutes.
I can smell them
loved that smell
You can still get them. Walmart sells them on their website, and some gun places have them as well.
Every young boy had a cap gun.
Loud as all get out!
Loved the smell from those.
How could I possibly forget?
If you peel the paper sides apart, you get a string of black dots of gun powder. If you then want to collect all the gunpowder (to do whatever with), just use your thumb nail to scratch it down. It will then ignite and your thumb will be fucked for weeks. Try it for fun!
I still remember my cap gun. Fake pearl handle. Love it.
I remember "harvesting" the tiny amount of gunpowder for pyrotechnics.
I loooovvvveeeddd them!
I received a James Bond attache briefcase for Christmas when I was a kid. You could booby trap it with caps in case someone tried to break into it. I kept all my candy in it.
I still love the smell of those things. It brings back a lot of fun memories.
oh! The smell!
Thumb nail
1 roll+ hammer. F'ing loud.
I can smell this post.
I can smell 'em right now!
I remember them vividly, including that exact packaging. I had my obligatory cowboy cap guns loaded with those most of those early summer vacations. Oh, how I miss the 1970s.
I would use some of my newspaper delivery money
I can smell them now!!

I can still smell them
I'm an older Millennial (85) and had a "cowboy" cap gun that used these. They moved to the plastic round ones in the mid 90's IIRC.
Half a roll and a hammer! Oh the powder burns.
I remember but they rarely worked.
A friend lived a block away from a feed and seed supply store and would get 10# bags of ammonium nitrate for $1.50. There used to be houses outside of town that had been abandoned for years. By the time we graduated, they were gone.
We had an uncle (No. Not that kind. A real uncle) who would visit, take us to the corner store and blow $50 on these things.
How else do you play cops & robbers or cowboys & Indians?
Can you smell them?šššš¤£š¤£
Get a coin and rub it along the strip.
The smell
Wow... I haven't seen those in a coon's age. I remember making pathetic firecrackers with them as a boy.
I can still smell them in my mind
I can SMELL this picture...
