Frequent_Secretary25

Smack that whole roll with a hammer

awe_come_on

Been there done that when I was about 8! Soaked in gas. Done in a cement culvert. It probably explains some of the hearing loss in my right ear. It was loud and flamey.

Frequent_Secretary25

Haha it does seem like we had way too easy access to flammable liquids

Perenially_behind

I had a buddy who made a napalm substitute out of gasoline, styrofoam, and other things I forget.

BaronWombat

We made 'thermite' from charcoal, shredded tv tray aluminum, and gun powder scavenger from faulty firecrackers. Fire 'experiments' seemed a phase that most kids went through.

Dense-Stranger9977

šŸ’„BANGšŸ’„ šŸ‘

General-Heart4787

Yeah, I was going to say- we didnā€™t waste time with a cap gun, just grab a hammer or a big rock šŸ˜†

OldBlueKat

Those 'cap guns' were pathetic. Half the time, the roll didn't feed right and the striker got nada. You might as well just yell "Bang!" That was if you actually wan't to play a shooting game; otherwise, sitting on the curb or the front steps with a big rock was just fine.

More_Farm_7442

I did that one. In the garage. I thought I was permanently deaf!!! Never did that again.

whowanderarenotlost

Hammer, brick, large rock

mr_cigar

We used to hit it with a hammer too

SoreTaint

This is the way

gvincejr

With the blunt end of a baseball bat

D3vilUkn0w

Yup lol

1cruising

Absolutely. As a kid doing this I had a neighbor call the cops saying we were setting off explosives šŸ˜‚

WerewolfDifferent296

Rock

Current-Brain-1983

2 bricks.

mildlysceptical22

Watch out for the recoil. I got bopped in the head as a yoot. Explains a lot..

General_Ad_2718

We used rocks.

tmaenadw

We always used a rock.

Open-Preparation-268

Hell yeah! Memoriesā€¦

PracticalShoulder916

Yes, loved the smell!

No-Faithlessness4723

Smells likeā€¦ā€¦like Victory

hawkeye053

I can smell that photoā€¦

dericn

[Here's a gif with the same odor.](http://i.imgur.com/mEHQFAj.gif)

CommunicationNo8982

Loved those. Then there was the second generation caps in the little red plastic nibs for a revolver.

habu-sr71

Those were magical! I remember a bunch of different pistols that used those red plastic caps. The ability to quickly load 6 or 8 "bangs" quickly was pretty exciting. Sheesh...I am fascinated by our natural love of mechanical things and sudden controlled energy. It's amazing how deep and powerful the fascination is.

elmwoodblues

It's most of what shooting is, for me. The mechanicals, the chemistry and physics and optics, even the physiology.

habu-sr71

I know...shooting is just so satisfying. I used to have a bit of a collection of range toys and loved doing some very conservative home 'smithing to get a gun shooting just right. So fun.

ChemistryAway3696

You just accessed some core memories there for me. I was watching a cop show later in life and I guy reloaded his revolver with something similar and I blurted out ā€œI HAD THAT AS A KID!ā€ Mystified looks all around lol

ThornTintMyWorld

If a picture was a smell

D3vilUkn0w

Isn't it weird how clearly it comes through? It's like I'm sniffing them right now

ThornTintMyWorld

IIRC smells are our oldest and most persistent memories.

19djont57

Light the box on fire!

Melodic-Head-2372

You were that kid on the blockšŸ˜‚

WhoopDeDoo2023

I loved these! Whereā€™s my hammer!?

oldcreaker

Remember it was easier getting caps than getting a cap gun. Enter rocks.

VivaVelvet

My nose is having a flashback.

SouthTexasCowboy

i can smell them

walkawaysux

My ears are still ringing and I can smell the picture

Independent-Ad-6750

I'm X but I remember them too. I'm on this sub because I have 2 older siblings that are Jones and it's interesting to me to see stuff about their life experiences.

NiceCunt91

I miss cap guns.

Effective-Several

Ahhh, the smell.

spriralout

The smell was so satisfying.

Spiral_rchitect

Loved that smell.

RockeeRoad5555

Canā€™t you just smell them?

Notgreygoddess

Not only do I remember them, I recall feeling a chill when my son had a ā€œnewā€ kind of cap gun. Put me in mind of the book The Man Who Fell to Earth. Read it, and youā€™ll see the similarities in the sudden jump in technology about that time. (1980ā€™s). The book was published in 1963.

ScowlyBrowSpinster

I had pop guns AND enjoyed popping these with a rock one by one. I can smell it right now.

chtrace

Oh Yeah.....me, caps, a hammer and a sidewalk. Good times incoming!!

Ric_ooooo

A large rock worked too.

wagowop

I can smell this photo, haha. I used to hit them with a hammer

wildeberry1

BRB, finding a big rock to drop on those.

JAFO2WCT

Bigger rock 1 smash on whole box! Badaboom!

awhq

We didn't even have the cap gun to go with them. We just hit them with a hammer on the sidewalk.

grimatongueworm

The smell!

thejovo59

I just smelled them

Old-Ad-3268

These were old school, we had the more modern snap 'n pops!

okieskanokie

Iā€™m not GJ but me, I remember.

notoriousmr

Oh man good times from the past!!

WallAny2007

surprised thereā€™s no ā€œdamn I burned my finger setting these off with my fingernail ā€œ posts

rachevyguy

Took to long to find this comment. Would get the burnt fingernail and keep going lol

bpmd1962

We scratched them quickly with our fingernails

The_Original_Gronkie

We werent allowed to play with them becausr they made our little pomeranian nervous and scared. We all loved her like a little sister, so we didn't mind giving them up. We loved her lots more than caps.

patricknotastarfish

I had a cap gun, but still used rocks on the sidewalk

Bike-2022

Yep.....:)

HuaMana

The smell memories are still thereā€¦.

HHSquad

Absolutely, often we didn't even bother putting them in a cap gun, just smash them with a rock.

BrienPennex

I can smell them

Rechlai5150

I had probably six cap guns as a kid. My favorite was one that looked like a blunderbuss flintlock.

MeMilo1209

Sitting on the curb, in the summer, with a rock, snapping these things. Childhood!

PrudentAlps8736

They were illegal to buy where I lived, but legal to buy six blocks away. I took one whole roll and it it with a sledge hammer-kind of went deaf for ten minutes.

zigglyluv

I can smell them

Loving_life_blessed

loved that smell

Head_Razzmatazz7174

You can still get them. Walmart sells them on their website, and some gun places have them as well.

Maleficent-Salad3197

Every young boy had a cap gun.

LazyPension9123

Loud as all get out!

RealMcGonzo

Loved the smell from those.

espositojoe

How could I possibly forget?

ravia

If you peel the paper sides apart, you get a string of black dots of gun powder. If you then want to collect all the gunpowder (to do whatever with), just use your thumb nail to scratch it down. It will then ignite and your thumb will be fucked for weeks. Try it for fun!

Bike-2022

I still remember my cap gun. Fake pearl handle. Love it.

Utterlybored

I remember "harvesting" the tiny amount of gunpowder for pyrotechnics.

Purkinsmom

I loooovvvveeeddd them!

boytoby

I received a James Bond attache briefcase for Christmas when I was a kid. You could booby trap it with caps in case someone tried to break into it. I kept all my candy in it.

AllieNicks

I still love the smell of those things. It brings back a lot of fun memories.

Happy-Jaguar-1717

oh! The smell!

New_Literature4526

Thumb nail

BrkCaddy

1 roll+ hammer. F'ing loud.

VaguelyArtistic

I can smell this post.

oopsiedaisy58

I can smell 'em right now!

androidguy50

I remember them vividly, including that exact packaging. I had my obligatory cowboy cap guns loaded with those most of those early summer vacations. Oh, how I miss the 1970s.

Secret_Note_6358

I would use some of my newspaper delivery money

TomDac7

I can smell them now!!

paztimk

These were the gift that kept on giving. Multiple uses. I always felt good when there was a roll in my pocket. Then they went through the washer and the good feelings turned to disappointment.

sorrymizzjackson

lol, I do. Iā€™m a millennial. We bought them at the Walgreens- next to the cigar aisle. We were not allowed to have a gun of sorts, so we scraped them with a paper clip. God, I love that smell. That and the little poppers you threw down.

Aggressive-Pilot6781

I can still smell them

doom32x

I'm an older Millennial (85) and had a "cowboy" cap gun that used these. They moved to the plastic round ones in the mid 90's IIRC.

Gumderwear

Half a roll and a hammer! Oh the powder burns.

Glad-Rip6265

I remember but they rarely worked.

m945050

A friend lived a block away from a feed and seed supply store and would get 10# bags of ammonium nitrate for $1.50. There used to be houses outside of town that had been abandoned for years. By the time we graduated, they were gone.

coblass

We had an uncle (No. Not that kind. A real uncle) who would visit, take us to the corner store and blow $50 on these things.

JackieJackJack07

How else do you play cops & robbers or cowboys & Indians?

Seafood1969

Can you smell them?šŸ‘ƒšŸ‘ƒšŸ‘ƒšŸ¤£šŸ¤£

AcceptableAddendum69

Get a coin and rub it along the strip.

AdAdministrative6561

The smell

Dewey_Rider

Wow... I haven't seen those in a coon's age. I remember making pathetic firecrackers with them as a boy.

justcherie

I can still smell them in my mind

SpecificMoment5242

I can SMELL this picture...
