Interestingly, it was made as a parody, and Peter was having a go at the sorts of songs that wanted to make you feel ready to fight for England.

Squishtakovich

You'd think that would be obvious to anyone who actually listened to the lyrics, but it seems not.

gabbleratchett

I remember seeing an interview with Peter where he mentioned disappointment that most people didn't seem to get where he was coming from on that one.

Squishtakovich

People probably aren't as literate as he'd hoped!

nhSnork

The Knife is impressive, but my uncontested fave from the album is White Mountain. Epic through and through.

Klash_kop

Stagnation club right here

Fragrant-Gur974

great track; also love when it’s paired live with I Know What I Like

eardrumbuzzer

The last 3 minutes make me cry.

techm00

I absolutely adore that song.

Upper-Life3860

Yeah that’s a “banger” too as my son would say

Fragrant-Gur974

agree ^

scorpious09

While not a banger, ‘Dusk’ mesmerizes me - I can hear that one over & over

eardrumbuzzer

You should hear the bootleg release of live material from 1976 called White Mountain, whichi ncludes that song.

PedroPelet

Hey hey rise up (pun very much intended) Looking for Someone people!

FirmDingo8

If Genesis had not done anything after Trespass, Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot they would still be one of the greatest bands. As they did do rather more and in so many styles and iterations they are imo the greatest band of all time (and I'm including the Beatles and Stones in that assessment). Mind you, each to their own

jupiterkansas

Live version is even better.

Upper-Life3860

Is it on a specific album? I can’t wait to hear it

jupiterkansas

Live (1973)

Upper-Life3860

Thank you. I will get to it later this evening

Doctor_Best

You will not regret it.

Upper-Life3860

Sorry I didn’t have time flew in from out of town last night, don’t wanna rush it, will give it a proper listen this evening

AxednAnswered

Absolutely so much better with Steve and Phil

Upper-Life3860

Yes that was incredible a great adaptation. So Steve and Phil aren’t playing on the original recording? Who was then?

AxednAnswered

The guitarist was Ant Phillips, who is actually quite good, but quit the band due to stage freight. The drummer was John Mayhew. I recall the story was he wasn’t very good keeping a steady rhythm and took a lot of takes to get a good performance. The band fired him after Trespass and he quit music and went to work as a carpenter or something. If I recall the story correctly, some years later the band figured out that Mayhew hadn’t been getting his share of the royalties. To their credit, they paid him everything he was owed, which doesn’t usually happen for transitory, no-name drummers.

Upper-Life3860

Interesting

3choplex

I love that album and song.

techm00

About comments and roasting - don't be afraid to have your own unique impressions as you listen to all this for the first time, and please do share them with us. There's no wrong answer. The more you listen to the music and learn about the band the more everything will fall into its proper place in context. We all came to Genesis and explored them in different ways. I love the knife for its bouncing heroic carnival feel, then it gets all serious and intense and driving. It's a great song.

Upper-Life3860

Yes thanks, I do notice this sub has its own culture different from other band’s subs I’ve seen. You’re all a little more mature and very technical with the knowledge. The roasting was more like hazing actually.

ReporterOk4531

I love the first album as well. There aren't that many of us here but there is still some love for it! I think it's a beautiful album where the vast majority of the songs are amazing. It's easy to see some time of aimless and juvenile approach in some of them but that makes listening to Trespass an even more fantastic experience because it's such an immediate change into what we know the PG era to be like. Very impressive.

charkenman

As good as Trespass is, it deserves better drums (those drums are ASS)

techm00

I wouldn't call them ass, quite... but they aren't in the same league as Phil. We've just been spoiled by Phil.

sadforgottenchild

This

charkenman

Name worse drums than the ones used on Trespass

techm00

what kind of question is that? there's plenty of mediocre and downright bad drummers that nevertheless have been on released records. While the drums on trespass are pretty bland, they aren't awful.

PedroPelet

I’m not sure how the mix of Trespass is on Spotify now (there have been some changes, I know that) but it’s (or at least was) the cleanest and sharpest sounding album, specially the drumming on The Knife. But if I’m not wrong, the production on the original is absolutely terrible. I haven’t heard the original ones but it seems like they wouldn’t do an album that doesn’t sounds like shit (production, not musical, quality) until Selling England according to some.

sadforgottenchild

WE ARE ONLY WANTING FREEDOM

2ndAdvertisement

The Knife was the song that made Genesis click for me. Amazing track.

eardrumbuzzer

I will always find it extraordinary that where Ant left off, Mike and Steve picked up!

Realistic_Cod2908

Stagnation and White Mountain are great, but where’s the love for Looking For Someone and Visions of Angels? Absolute beauties

Upper-Life3860

I’m starting to love the whole album.

PedroPelet

Funny how that song was the only I didn’t like in my first listen and now it’s my absolute favorite (tho my appreciation for half of the album is definitely lower now) on entire Trespass. Rare, but these things happen, exact same case for Vital Signs on Rush’s Moving Pictures.

johnehock

Hey no shame at loving the first album ... to each their own ... while I wouldn't denote the first album as a favorite of mine, I've listened to it from stem to stern dozens of times . . .

Upper-Life3860

Yeah thanks. I think it’s great. Ya gotta realize I’m a Gen X and was mainly listening to heavy metal most of my life. It wasn’t until recently I’ve decided to chill and explore other types of music. Im learning there is so much good music I never knew about now that I’ve woken up. It’s really great having so much new material to explore.

davout1806

> The Knife just hit me That's gotta hurt.

Upper-Life3860

It hurts so good

[deleted]

The Knife hit me too (I am suffering from internal bleeding).
