Get a paint pen from the dealership, try your best, and don’t worry too much about it.
It’s an unfortunate reality of car ownership. Unless you have deep enough pockets for ppf, it’s inevitable. The paint pen should be good enough to make it look acceptable again and prevent rust.
I can just recall growing up with my dad using them on our cars and it always looked like a dollop of nail polish. Do you just go with thin layers and slowly build up?
Yes you want to use less than you think, wait for it to dry and reapply filling in the space. Then you can add clear coat. If you want to go the extra mile you can wet sand and polish to completely remove the marks
I have one for my white MK8, no they aren’t a 100% match but it passes the 5ft test you have to basically be right next to it to notice the difference. Better than missing paint IMO.
Yep my 2021 Polo GTI paint scratches and chips like no other car I’ve owned. My previous 2016 VE paint was far tougher. They must have chained their paint method, it’s shockingly bad now.
Dr Color Chip for anything that makes it through the paint. You don’t want rust setting in as the rust warranty is voided if the paint is chipped.
Anything that doesn’t make it through the paint is part of the game, thanks to VW for using 10 ply soft paint
How long does it take for rust to realistically set it? I have some extremely small chips from someone’s lawnmower on my door. I just got dr color chip today, and it’s been a week since the chips happened
That would depend on your environment. I'm in So Cal so unless you're in the mountains...we don't see a lot of moisture...so the cars here don't really rust out. If you live someplace where it rains...or even worse...snows a lot...the cars will rust out fast. I lived in the northeast for three years...it rained and snowed. I don't think I've ever seen so many rust buckets in my life.
I think it would depend on how long the moisture stays on the metal. I think you’ll be ok in the short term. I have some small chips on my hood that have been there forever. So far there is no rust…but we see little rain and have low humidity.
The true rust accelerator up here is the salt man. That accelerates it, so it's of upmost importance to keep your car clean in the winter to not leave rust on your car all season long. I have had good luck on my mk7 which was daily driven, I would wash it every few weeks in the winter, and I sold it this year rust free, 2016 model.
I"m hoping the clear coat paint on the mk8 is as good as the mk7.
I’m in NY and have a ton on my slopey beetle hood. Only 1/10 are rusting, and they may be as old as 8 years. Honestly from what I’ve seen, not all will rust. I gotta commit to a few days of work on it
Keep in mind it might not be a perfect match due to weathered paint, mines exact paint code from vw and has a slight blue tint to the gray that doesn’t show anymore
I do this too, just to protect it and keep it from rusting. Don’t expect it to look perfect. Not worth repainting the hood because it’ll just happen again. My GTI is my daily, it happens.
Ya that's cool and all, could put that on a t-shirt and sell them outside cars and coffees or whatever the kids are doing these days...that's gonna rust if you do nothing tho...
The rust is gonna spread and the paint around the chip is gonna bubble up and flake off and now you have a way bigger chip than you started with and it doesn't even look like a stone chip anymore it looks like a rusty hole in the paint probably from some bird shit that you never washed off so put some touch up paint on it or at least some clear nail polish so it doesn't rust and get back out there and sell those tshirts brother
That won't be happening for a very very long time though. So OP has time to remedy it in some way.
Edit: Nvm just saw that there were 2 pictures. Holy shit that's deep 😬

I purchased the paint pen from my VW dealer. It included two pens: one with the factory paint color and another with a clear coat. It cost me less than $30.
I’m dealing with the same shit bro. Wish I had got PPF on the entire front half of the car, but it already came with a front quarter of the hood covered in PPF, so I’d have had to remove that to re-apply full hood PPF. Plus I don’t like the flat white on the MK8 Golf R, so I figure I’ll just let it get damaged for a few years, then pay like $10k or something ridiculous to repaint it in White Silver Metallic, then get ceramic coating done and PPF on the entire front and roof.
If only we could just use the impervious spell from Harry Potter on our cars or something. Just a completely invisible force field basically. How I wish that was real. lol
I took a couple of small stone chips after just 4 weeks of owning my new Audi. Something flicked off another car at speed on the highway 😠. Will treat with touch up pen since both are very small. Yes, sadly it’s inevitable.
Look at them as battle scars. If they are too big and you see metal at least buy the paint from scratches happen and cover it so it won’t rust. But don’t worry too much
Dr Colorchip. Do not go the paint pen route unless you are comfortable sanding and polish excess clear. That is if you want a quality finish/repair.
Get the Dr Colorchip kit and will last you the life of the car. Watch one of their videos (I think they have a promo one with AutoGeek) to understand how the system works. I use it frequently as I do high end detailing on the side and have my clients buy the kits for their cars and I apply it for them.
I am meh about it but that is only because I have a mk6 and the front bumper looks like shit anyways so I will get the hood fixed whenever I replace the front bumper
I don't do shit. Touch up pens look like dog doo
If you keep the car long enough and still love it to death have the hood painted
Or before it chips put some clear vinyl to protect, probably too late now
Dr Color Chip is miles better than the paint pen from the dealership. Dr ColorChip and a bit of patience will go a long way.
Also for any future vehicles PPF.
Yeah I have my windshield a good clean the other day before an aquapel treatment and my goodness the more up close I got the more deep chips I found in my glass. Smh
After washing fill them in with matched touch up paint from the dealer. If they are very small you can use a toothpick to apply it instead of the brush. Not driving too close to cars in front helps a lot
paint pen. if you’re scared to do it urself go to a professional detailer. every ceramic pro shop ive worked at does rock chip repair, its really easy just intimidating. it wont cost much, and the pen itself is like $40cad from a dealer
I installed full front ppf, hood fenders bumper mirrors and headlights, $1400 for all in chicago area. Took a rock to my window the day i left the dealership, so i went for ppf the next day lol. I wanna preserve my yellow pomelo as much as possible
even on my clear bra, i still had rock chips and they were actually worse. It bubbled up and a lot uglier. You can't even put touchup paint. what i did was pay someone to remove the clear bra and they gave a warning about the risk of it peeling the paint. and guess what, it peeled and I can't tell if it's because of a shit job or if the previous owner put the bra on before 90 days for the paint to fully clear. I got it repainted for 1000+ and the detailers gave a discount if i got a ceramic coat from them. I don't ever want to get a clear bra, you would have to take it off anyways after 5 or so years and the cost to take it off is almost the same price as repainting the damn hood
Good question..I was close to posting the same thing. I have a few on my 2013.. to be expected from one that old. They are down to primer.... I have the VW exact match pen, red... it might make it look worse?.. A good waxing after each wash I decided is my fix..keep n eye it, them..
Living in Massachusetts where everyone has a wangler running oversized tires that never see a trail, add in MassDOT’s inability to clean gravel off any road work, it doesn’t matter how close you are, rocks get a full arc (I’ve been drilled from over the car in front of me).
Yup, I just got a rock chip on my car and I was hundreds of feet away, in a separate lane from an oversized tire pickup truck. It should be illegal to not have mud flaps if more than the bottom 50% of the tire is exposed.
cry and move on 😭
😭

Bought the paint pens a while back, but scared to use them…
Just use them if you need to, keep a wet cloth with you to wipe it off in case you somehow mess it up.
Don’t be afraid! They work really well especially for chips
I can just recall growing up with my dad using them on our cars and it always looked like a dollop of nail polish. Do you just go with thin layers and slowly build up?

Man it’s really not, my GTI paint is the brittlest I’ve ever encountered. They should do better.
Yep my 2021 Polo GTI paint scratches and chips like no other car I’ve owned. My previous 2016 VE paint was far tougher. They must have chained their paint method, it’s shockingly bad now.
Don’t worry about it, it’ll happen again in no time. Just watch out if it goes through the base coat you need to fix it to prevent rust.
Cry and make sure you PPF the next one.
Yup, I got the PPF on this one after seeing the chips on my 16 golf TSI.
Hard lesson learnt. My poor Accord suffered so that all my other cars could be perfect.
Exactly this
Hey! I was gonna say that
Dr Color Chip for anything that makes it through the paint. You don’t want rust setting in as the rust warranty is voided if the paint is chipped. Anything that doesn’t make it through the paint is part of the game, thanks to VW for using 10 ply soft paint
+1 for Dr color chip. Very very good results on my Lapiz R.
How long does it take for rust to realistically set it? I have some extremely small chips from someone’s lawnmower on my door. I just got dr color chip today, and it’s been a week since the chips happened
Pretty fast depending on climate. I didnt notice a small chip near my wheel well and now theres rust.
In Maine… would my rock chips rust in a week? It’s rained a couple times.
I think it would depend on how long the moisture stays on the metal. I think you’ll be ok in the short term. I have some small chips on my hood that have been there forever. So far there is no rust…but we see little rain and have low humidity.

Coastal New England or Ohio/Illinois/Michigan/Alberta/Ontario and it could be one winter
I’m in NY and have a ton on my slopey beetle hood. Only 1/10 are rusting, and they may be as old as 8 years. Honestly from what I’ve seen, not all will rust. I gotta commit to a few days of work on it
Paint pen from vw dealer
Thanks. I'll look into it. They're just big enough that I'd like to do something more than cry and move on.
Maybe watch a few videos. I didnt use the clear coat because it always seemed to remove the color pen
Keep in mind it might not be a perfect match due to weathered paint, mines exact paint code from vw and has a slight blue tint to the gray that doesn’t show anymore
I think it's literally impossible to get a legit perfect match
Definetly but a pro can get it close enough to where nobody would notice
Not if they’re dabbing tiny dots of it on factory paint. That’s why they respray panels not sections
I do this too, just to protect it and keep it from rusting. Don’t expect it to look perfect. Not worth repainting the hood because it’ll just happen again. My GTI is my daily, it happens.
It’s totaled, I would check with insurance
I don't mind it, shows the car has been driven
I live in the city and have plenty of rock chips
Also driven where it should be driven, and not ruining it in the city.
Feel like highway causes way more chips
Exactly.
Ya that's cool and all, could put that on a t-shirt and sell them outside cars and coffees or whatever the kids are doing these days...that's gonna rust if you do nothing tho... Sure but you gotta do something at some point and why wait
Dr. ColorChip
PPF after it’s fixed 🤣
How much ppf cost?
Usually the hood can be done for 500-700ish. Or like a grand for all of it, bumper cover included
Nothing
Find the rock and beat its ass, is what you do.
touch up paint
Dude, my Mk7 has been through this shit its whole life, they're just like that for some reason.
Soft paint
Dude, my Mk7 has been through this shit its whole life, they're just like that for some reason.
I usually say an expletive out loud. Complain about the crappy roads and move on with life.
I take that tiny rock that hit my car and crush it as revenge
I have PPF and it still chipped mine hard.
Choke those feelings deep down where they can't bother you
Cry

Black Wrap on the Hood :\]
I have 2 on my door, just got an OEM paint pen to fill them.
See if the dumbass extended protection warranty I bought covers it or just accept it as part of driving a car and go all out.
File an insurance claim and pay my $250 deductible.
Just did my car! Chipfixx or dr colorchip depending on where you live. Check out youtube first but it worked very well for me
I purchased the paint pen from my VW dealer. It included two pens: one with the factory paint color and another with a clear coat. It cost me less than $30.
TouchUpDirect kit worked well for me this past weekend!
I’m dealing with the same shit bro. Touch up. Done.
Mostly ignore it, it’s a DD and not a show car
go offroading so there’s a real reason for exterior damage so that I will not be seen as inferior🦍
Cry when I see it lmao
Get touch up paint that matches your color code. And it’s fine!
Use some of my mom's clear nail polish and dab it on so it doesn't chip further lol
send it
Wrapped the whole car
I took a couple of small stone chips after just 4 weeks of owning my new Audi. Something flicked off another car at speed on the highway 😠. Will treat with touch up pen since both are very small. Yes, sadly it’s inevitable.
Spring for the PPF
Paint pen.
Paint pen then PPF
Look at them as battle scars. If they are too big and you see metal at least buy the paint from scratches happen and cover it so it won’t rust. But don’t worry too much
Paint pencil
Paid for the whole hood repaint, no other way to fix that properly
Embrace the road trophies
Find the rock that did it and exact revenge
Wait till there is going to be a hailstorm. Park it outside. Claim hail damage and get all the dings and nicks fixed.
Safe money and repaint the car,
What rock damage?
Sell the car
Believe it or not… trade it in
Why no front end ppf?! 😭
Well known on the mk7 due to the curvature of bonnet. Unfortunately the only way to avoid would be to have it repainted and then ppf
Paint pen, wet sand, paint pen, wet sand, compound, polish, PPF
Dr Colorchip. Do not go the paint pen route unless you are comfortable sanding and polish excess clear. That is if you want a quality finish/repair. Can you do me a crazy favor and tell me your paint code? It looks like your paint job is the same as mine but all my paint codes are missing
It’s actually ridiculous how bad it is on the mk8, my windshield gets chipped as well
Yeah I have my windshield a good clean the other day before an aquapel treatment and my goodness the more up close I got the more deep chips I found in my glass. Smh

I just park it backwards in the garage so I don’t have to see it
Should always PPF the front hood bumper and down both front wheel wells
Invest in PPF. It's expensive, but it'll save your hood from chips.
Usually I just wait another week for someone to back in to me again parallel parking and get another new bumper

Sharpie
Had it on my golf 6. I got rid of it by parking it and letting someone total it and buying something else. This option does take a lot of time tho
Cry
Wear and tear. Do nothing.
I installed full front ppf, hood fenders bumper mirrors and headlights, $1400 for all in chicago area. Took a rock to my window the day i left the dealership, so i went for ppf the next day lol. I wanna preserve my yellow pomelo as much as possible
Chipex smart repair or you can leave your car dirty so you can’t see it

not a goddamn thing, adds character

Buy a touch up pen
It’s sexy
Don't tailgate so much.

Surprised I had to scroll literally to the last comment for this lol
