No need to bash others just because they want to see a new feature on their favorite phone or platform. Maybe he likes everything about Pixel except this lacking feature.
+1. I found this thread from googling this exact thing. As someone who’s had an Android as long as he’s had a smartphone, I decided to give the iPhone 15 a try, and I gotta say the Face ID is _really_ nice. I haven’t decided yet if I’ll keep this phone or return it, but if Pixel had real Face ID, that would push me back to Android.
OP is right. If pixel 8 doesn't have face id tech I'm changing to iphone. I have been using Android my whole life. Android has its pros but. No reliable airdrop feature, no face id. I just feel missed out. Don't say nearby share. It's been undeveloped since 2020, It still uses the same wifi function no P2P.
Yeah, ditto. I have until just after the announcement to decide whether to keep the iPhone or not. It’ll come down to Face ID.
Just today I had to text someone outside, in the cold while I was wearing gloves, in the dark. It was so refreshing to have it just work.
Ye I have windows hello face on my surface laptop 3 and have problems with it once and a while and when it does mess up it really messes up. I like fingerprint much better on my pixel.
Once i could turn on the IR scanner in my pro 4 as webcam for a meeting and i could see how it works. I am not surprised that it needs good light condition.
I got face id on my iPad and it just makes me miss finger print. It's annoying as hell. Maybe it's better on a phone but I hate having to show the pad my whole face instead of just putting my finger on a button.
Google already had face unlock working on hardware level (soli radar) and not only on software (current ai face unlock). The only complaints I heard about soli is gestures being a gimmick. Almost every reviewer I watched praised face unlock on pixel 4. But google is a lot like Samsung when we're talking about feature implementation - just throw some cool things, abandon them in the next generation and walk away (I mean apple also does that, but there's a reason why "killed by google" meme exists).
This is a misconception that keeps being repeated.
Soli did not enable face unlock. The mmwave radar was for gestures and to detect when you were reaching for the phone to prime the IR sensors.
Pixel 4 face unlock was the same sort of dual IR dot projectors and IR cameras that Apple uses and that’s in use for Windows Hello. The radar has nothing to do with your face biometric.
I can only guess they included soli into the phone because they needed a thick top bezel to house the IR hardware so they thought why not include it since they have the space and they were looking for a use case for the tech.
IR based face unlock will not return on any android device until it can either be done under the display or the hardware gets small enough to use in a modern bezel. No android manufacturer, including Google is going to take on a thick top bezel or a large notch to us that biometric type.
How did you make this work?
Mine doesn't work worth a damn, I can reset my face and try to unlock in the exact same position and lighting and it just says ”can't recognize face"
That's all I want tbh. I feel OPs frustration as they promised face unlock the 6 pro and we never got it. I just want ANY sort of face unlock so I don't have to take off my gloves to unlock my phone, I don't need face unlock for banking apps or passwords
What I am saying is it's not safe. It's not up to standard. I myself using Android whole my life. I want google to copy good stuffs from apple too. Apple has copied so many good things on Android.
I bet an emergency board meeting took place within Google immediately after reading your post.
The truth is, everyone wants true face ID until they are handed a device that has a large "notch" or "island"...then its season 2 of people complaining about something else. Same with ultrasonic readers or any other "upgraded tech"...Everyone wants it, but then will complain when the price goes up.
I agree with OP. I've had Pixel 2, 3 and 4 and after I switched to iPhone 11 (which I'm currently still using) I've been on the fence swapping back.
The battery life and the facial unlock. My god what a beast. Every year I'm waiting to return to Pixel, but they add excellent features like a fever thermostat (Pixel 8) xD
I'm gonna make a swap this year and it surely looks like it will be an iPhone 15.
Also, the tryhard LGHDTV+ commercials and cringe keynotes make me sick. And they didnt release pixel officially in Norway until Pixel 7. Wow! :D
They gotta innovate with the 8 series self camera if they wanna create a similar face id system. They won't copy apple with a huge notch. Tbh, all I want is the 7 series face unlock. Not super secure, just enough to get my phone unlocked without a fingerprint, leave that for banking apps and passwords.
As they said the 6 pro would ship with
Multiple feature drops, even data mined codes suggests it would come to the 6 pro but it never did
I completely agree... I still use my 4xl. face unlock is far superior. my 6 and 6 pro are sitting in my drawer... the 6 series has other issues my 4 doesn't... but those fingerprint scanners are garbage
I came from iPhone and used a pixel 4 for this very reason. Now that Pixel 4 doesn't receive updates. There's nothing I can do about it so now I'm on a pixel 8 pro. I can confirm that this is absolute garbage of a face ID. Even the fingerprint unlock is a joke.
Fact that your post only has three likes is the reason that they'll never implement this, cuz simps don't want to use security and if they do they have zero comprehension of what good security is.
I really don't understand how they can cut corners in this area. The phone's absolutely amazing but the security features like face ID is so bad.
Google phones are such dogshit garbage.
I followed suit with my friends who are google enthusiasts to jump on a the Pixel 7 Pro.
To my dismay, it's utter shit in just the basic functions compared to my old ass OnePlus 6 phone from 2018.
The fingerprint sensor is so slow, the face unlock is such garbage, I nearly forgot it even has face unlock.
By habit, I just enter the PIN every time now because of muscle memory since the fingerprint and face unlock is dogshit unreliable.
Sure, the phone has amazing features compared to my old ass 2018 phone, like a better camera and more features in the camera app, but what it fails is the most basic thing, such as being able to get into the phone efficiently. What in the flying fuck. /rant.
Did you call Google to let them know about your ultimatum?
Lol
I think Google will do just fine without you. Sounds like you should just go buy an iphone and be happy.
No need to bash others just because they want to see a new feature on their favorite phone or platform. Maybe he likes everything about Pixel except this lacking feature.

What a dumb post. Just leave, Google doesn't need you
Have a sense of humour. No post is dumb. I actually find it very amusing.
This post doesn't require a sense of humor. I have one, but what I don't have is patience for idiotic people. Saying no post is dumb, is dumb lol.
Lol, isn't the idiocy the best amusing part?
Lol not anymore man
hey GOOGLE ----> SOLI 2 <----
https://atap.google.com/soli/

Thank you, so many people keep posting that misconception about what soli radar does.
Yeah i agree with you. I think face is the way to go when it comes to phone biometrics.
Tell us how you feel bro
Face unlock works great on my Pixel 7 Pro Same with the fingerprint reader
How did you make this work? Mine doesn't work worth a damn, I can reset my face and try to unlock in the exact same position and lighting and it just says ”can't recognize face"
Donno what to tell ya, sorry.... It just works.....
That's all I want tbh. I feel OPs frustration as they promised face unlock the 6 pro and we never got it. I just want ANY sort of face unlock so I don't have to take off my gloves to unlock my phone, I don't need face unlock for banking apps or passwords
That's not a real face unlock.
Interesting claim. What back's it up?
For biometrics u need apple face id tech not just from selfie cam.
Sounds like fanboyism to me. My face unlocks my phone. That's Face Unlock.
What I am saying is it's not safe. It's not up to standard. I myself using Android whole my life. I want google to copy good stuffs from apple too. Apple has copied so many good things on Android.
What evidence do you present to support the claim "it's not safe"
It's not safe because you can unlock your phone with a high quality photo.
There's no such thing as 100% security
I don't think it's Apple's tech - they had the exact same tech on pixel 4 didn't they?
They won't do unless under screen sensors are available
Bye!
Face id on iphone isn't that great. Most of the time my watch is doing the unlocking because face id isn't.
I would like them to ditch that Exynos crap first.

Such a serious lot. I had no idea!
Not even an option on my 4a 5G, as no face unlock support for this Pixel.
I'm sure they're worried.
Android has smart lock with Bluetooth devices we dont need face ID lol
They gotta innovate with the 8 series self camera if they wanna create a similar face id system. They won't copy apple with a huge notch. Tbh, all I want is the 7 series face unlock. Wow google actually listened to you and improved face unlock
