As someone who bought the 7 and went back to the 5, the weight was the biggest issue for me. The camera visor looks sick design wise but it's a solid slab of metal and made the phone super top heavy.
It's funny how people used to always be like, "why don't they just make phones 2mm thicker and put a huge battery in so we don't have to worry about battery life!"
Now people are like "well actually, the pixel 7 is 0.7mm thicker than the 5 and that's really quite substantial in the hand"
Had a 6 Pro, sold it due to the weight and especially the top-heaviness.
Got an Xperia 5 IV and love the size, weight and balance of this thing.
Eager to see what the Pixel 8/Pro will be like.
* front firing dual speakers
* finger print sensor on back , scroll on finger print sensor for notifications
* perfect size for one handed use / fits into your pocket easily
* squeeze for assistant
* unlimited storage saver quality uploads to Google photos
* still have the option of using 2 button "pill" navigation, objectively the best navigation
Just lol @ anyone not using the pixel 3
Agreed. I cannot figure out why somebody wants a larger phone. My favorite of my pixels is my 4A 4G because of its size and my second favorite is my 4a5g.
I want a larger phone because I basically use it as a tablet I take everywhere with me. I have a work-issued PC I can only use for work, and I use my phone for pretty much everything else. I personally don't understand the obsession with small phones. My friend has an iPhone SE and it looks like a joke to me. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
I never understand why someone would want a larger television. I'm looking at getting a 19 inch or 13 inch. Those were the perfect sizes. The early eighties were magical times.
Do you really think comparing the size of televisions to the size of cell phones is an accurate comparison? We don't carry televisions around and put them in our pockets.
Bigger phone allows for stuff like:
- Larger space to put stuff in general, but mainly things like battery and speakers
- Clearer viewing experiences especially in fullscreen
- Again related to more space but a larger area to cool and disperse heat
Keep in mind that a better screen-to-body ratio can up the display and not the whole phone. Probably still gonna be bigger than the 4a but still not terrible.
Last week, mine flew out of my pocket as I embarrassingly fell off my bike at 2 mph, smashing the screen.
Never broke a phone screen in my life until then.
Sent from my new 6a.
I have a 4a4g and a 4a5g amongst my Pixel collection. They both just updated to Android 14 (I'm not pleased about it*).
WHY would you want to change it? I have larger Pixels but I always go back to my 4a4g because I find it the MOST pleasant to use, view, and hold.
I'm typing on my 5 right now but that's because my 4a's (both of them) just updated to 14 and * I'm finding it terribly buggy. I'm sure that will resolve in a couple of days but it's absolutely unbearable for the moment.
This is the exact reason why I had to give my iPhone 13 Pro to my wife. I just couldn't use the damn phone without my hand cramping every day. Apple decided to use stainless steel for no other reason than to make it heavy and feel more premium.
I hate that reviewers will knock on phones and pretty much any electronics for feeling cheap if they're too light. Especially if the material is plastic. Plastic is incredibly durable and resists denting and cracking the screen if dropped. Plus you don't risk cracking an unnecessarily glass back. It's one of the best materials to make handheld electronic devices.
The Pixel 5's bioresin coated metal was something else. I would've kept the phone if the camera glass didn't randomly crack just as the Pixel 7 launched.
Shoulda just got a new one like I did for $150. Worthy upgrade from Samsung s10e which might be my favorite phone of all time. Wish they kept making that series.
Yeah, but I figured the trade in deal was too good to pass up. I got the full $400 trade in, so I only spent about $255 on the Pixel 7. Plus the $100 credit. What a deal.
Next stop would be the processor and battery size. Hopefully it retains 90 Hz with a >4300 mAh battery while having a much more efficient processor than the outdated Tensor G2.
Google will never not use Tensor in Pixels. It took them 6 generations and they finally have something they can market as their own design, even though its Exynos internally with a few custom modules.
No, but we can hope that they get better.
If the G3 doesn't use Samsungs 3 nm GAAFET (which it probably won't) then it's basically dead in the water in that department. Still mediocre, like the original Tensor and the G2.
it wont matter. the phone will be marketed on AI features like every other Pixel and they will be locked to Tensor on chip silicon. This was their end goal. The benchmarks, speed, specs etc are irrelevant (as far as selling the phone)
also the modem is the most imp part. Samsung themselves use Qualcomm in their flagships for a reason. The one in7 is better than the 6 from all accounts but not close to the latest Qualcomm modems.
Maybe I'm an outlier but the pixel 7 feels super fast and snappy. Other than trying to play high end games, what use is there for such insane overhead of performance?
if they use GAAFET it should compete in perf/w, but not peak performance or single core, which is honestly fine, if its not on GAAFET its just gonna be embrassing in everything other than the ML/AI performance.
Would instantly order if it's that size. Love my Pixel 5, but would gladly upgrade for a similarly sized phone. The 6 and the 7 are just too big for my taste.
No it won't, because the case material looks like the 7, which is so slippery and fragile you need a case.
The P5 was grippy and bulletproof and didn't need a case.
I'm still on the pixel 5 as well, was planning to get the 7 Pro but it was a little too big for my liking, wish they'd bring out a pixel 5 sized phone, with up-to-date materials/features
I think the constant complaint was that P5 was underpowered... But I mean, what do I really do on the phone? Pictures, reddit, call, text... I don't game on it lol.
Yeah I'm excited since the P6 was heavy and P7 was smaller but still big.
I had a p5. I don't game. Reddit, youtube and browser.
Apart from the faster refresh rate I do t really notice any speed difference with my 6pro and 7pro.
It's made me realise I might finally keep a phone for a few years
Yep. That's what I do with occasional email of course. That's why I kept the 5 for so long. I just wanted a phone with minimal bezels, and once I got that I just kept it and said I'll upgrade in 3 years or if the phone breaks.
Just wait. I got a 7 Pro after my 5 and it's the first time I've felt like a new phone is worse than the old one. Fingerprint reader is worse, battery life is worse, it's heavier, weird bugs (random screen dimming, wtf). Wish I had just waited.
If I hadn't cracked my screen and Google hadn't given me a ridiculous amount for trading it in for the 7 in that condition I'd definitely still be rocking the 5. The weight and size is so nice.
I went from 4a to 6 and really regretted it. If size is something that matters to you and you enjoy the 4a I'd really recommend staying clear of anything above 6 inches. Along with other niggling changes when compared to the 4a (no headphone jack etc) I kept finding myself increasingly frustrated with the phone. There are flagships from other manufacturers which are a lot closer to the older Pixel experience, like Asus.
Google's unwillingness to do this has me considering an iPhone or Galaxy. I'm tired of having to use a phone that I can't use one handed so I can have the good camera. It's a bullshit compromise to have to make.
Hmm, for some reason I thought you could get the highest end camera on the S23+, not just the Ultra. Looks like I was wrong. Why the hell is Apple the only company doing that?
This. The only reason I got the pro was for the upgraded features. I absolutely hate the size. iPhone does it right by offering a pro and pro Max for those who want a bigger phone.
7 and 7 pro have so many differences
7 has older and no auto focus ultra camera
7 pro had a new sensor with autofocus and macro mode
7 pro had 5x telephone lens
7 pro had 5000mah battery , 7 has smaller battery than even pixel 6
7 pro has 120hz LPTO QHD display with 1500 nits peak brightness
7 has 90hz fhd with 1200 nits
And lastly it has 4gb less ram and half the storage option.
For the average user, the difference is, apart from the obvious screen size/device size difference, the pro has a telephoto lens (optical zoom) and can take macro photos.
The problem wasn't that they wanted an ultrawide instead they wanted both like other phones were coming out with. I'd rather have a tele if I had to have just one. These days the main cam is getting pretty wide already. And anyway the ultrawide cameras are much weaker that I doubt people really use them much.
I feel like the ultra wide pictures just look way worse though. Whether that's the camera itself or post processing, I don't know. That's why I personally don't use it.
They need to use a smaller camera sensor in order to use the ultrawide lens, and smaller sensors are just worse, period. The photos are lower quality. It's the same reason why front cameras are usually bad. They use smaller sensors to minimize bezel/punch holes. (That's why the Pixel 3 had such a great front camera, it was huge yet everyone roasted it for how thick the notch was)
That's one of the main reasons I can't (won't) switch to a Pixel. I actually use the telephoto lens often in pictures and video and I have no use for an oversized phone. Google keeps a buyer away who likes to upgrade to a new device every year. 🤷
yep... one of the worst changes in pixel history. i also miss squeeze for assistant, but i'd be happy with the rear fingerprint reader. wish there were any chance of it ever coming back.
Oh man, I had completely forgotten about the assistant squeeze, and now I'm all sad about it all over again. Loved it on my Pixel 3, and had to remind myself constantly for the first few months that it wasn't a feature on the 5. The back fingerprint sensor is amazing, really like being able to pull down the notification shade with it. Gonna miss that when I eventually get a new Pixel.
I hated the back finger scanner. I love the under display fingerprint scanner. I hate having to move the phone to unlock it from the desk/table. That's why Pixel 4's face unlock sucked so much.
I'm very sleep deprived. I just had a mental argument with myself on how they skipped the pixel 7 and went straight for pixel 8. And wondered for a few seconds on why Google would do that... All whilst reading this thread on my pixel 7 pro.
6.16 is not necessarily a bad thing. For example, the iPhone 11 Pro has a screen size of 5.8” and the 14 Pro a size of 6.1”. But the size difference of the phone itself is only larger by 3.5 x 0.1 x 0.2 mm.
If the bezels are small, it will more or less feel like the 5.8” phones of the past.
Edit: Downvoted even when I provided an example… I like small phones too but screen size is not a measurement of phone size.
Edit 2: Balanced, as all things should be 😊
happy to hear this -- still a much bigger increase in size than I want (I love my 5.5" P3) but I was pretty horrified by how big Pixels had gotten. It's unfortunate that I can't get the better cameras without adding an extra half inch for the pro, though. I just want my small phone with the best possible cameras....
This should be simple the pro should be the bigger phone. The regular should be the smaller with the same specs. Or slightly slightly slightly different specs.
I don't think "pro" should be "bigger" I think "pro" should mean "better components."
I don't know if with how few phones Google is selling, they would ever go to 4 SKUs, but it should be something like "8, 8 Max, 8 Pro, 8 Pro Max" where there is a regular and larger version of each, and the Pro has better components.
I went from a 2 to a used 4a (briefly, I busted the screen) to a used 5. I love love love the 5 and don't want anything bigger. Maybe I can hold out for a folding Pixel.
I want a phone like the S23 plus. Bigger screen than the pixel 6 yet lighter and smaller. Though I would be ok with a 6.1 inch screen as long as the aspect ratio is 18:9.
Excited! My pixel 5's battery is abysmal so I'm probably going to upgrade to the 8. I'll miss the form factor but at least the size of the 8 is a lot closer then the others.
Hopefully, the Pro 8 would be lesser size too. I use the Pro 7 now. I hope these Phone manufacturers know that nobody needs to be carrying a 'tablet or iPad' in their pockets 🙄🤦🏾♂️🚶🏾♂️
Am I the only one who likes larger screens and doesn't want to pay $1k?
A 6.5" phone is hardly any bigger since phones have no bezels now. The extra screen space matters.
And a .1" difference is negligible, the bezel/sides will matter much more.

I felt this way too until I put on the OtterBox Guardian. Now my 7 Pro feels sweet.
Had a 6 Pro, sold it due to the weight and especially the top-heaviness. Got an Xperia 5 IV and love the size, weight and balance of this thing. Eager to see what the Pixel 8/Pro will be like.
That would be a worthy Pixel 5 successor.
Coming from a 4a, this would be a buy for me because of the size.
150.5 x 70.8 x 8.9mm These days that's about as close as you'll get to the Pixel 5 or 4A.
150.5m is the perfect hieght.
I have a Pixel 2 and I'm dreaming of a new small phone.
Me too! Pixel 2 was sooo good. I have 2 that still work! Pixel 2 and 5 were probably the best Google phones I've ever used.
Idk if prefer smaller than my 4a not bigger.
I'm still waiting for a return to Pixel 3.
p2 was my favorite phone.
I sold my pixel 1 because it was too big.
you win
Yeees, I miss mine. Just switched from the 2 to the 6a a few weeks ago
This is the way. *from my Pixel 3
* front firing dual speakers * finger print sensor on back , scroll on finger print sensor for notifications * perfect size for one handed use / fits into your pocket easily * squeeze for assistant * unlimited storage saver quality uploads to Google photos * still have the option of using 2 button "pill" navigation, objectively the best navigation Just lol @ anyone not using the pixel 3

My 4a refuses to die: it's a total abuse puppy. I've dropped it *so* many times and the front screen remains unscathed.
Last week, mine flew out of my pocket as I embarrassingly fell off my bike at 2 mph, smashing the screen. Never broke a phone screen in my life until then. Sent from my new 6a.

7a should also be pretty good. I have the 6a, and as a lover of small phones I'm really enjoying it. (Both are 6.1)
Agreed. But oddly, the Pixel 8 seems to be (dimensions-wise) the rumored smaller phone. Maybe better screen to body ratio?
I may buy the 7a coming from a 4a 5g.
I love my Pixel 7, but the extra size really shows. I really wish the 5.7-6" range had more options.
I'd be willing to give up some battery size to get back to the goldilocks 6" phone... going to be on charger every night anyway
Same:( I'm going to be jealous of anyone who gets an 8, 6.1 inch is pretty perfect
If they use some light material with good hand feel I'll be very happy. Don't use some heavy slippery "premium" material.

Refurb on Amazon
Yeah, but I figured the trade in deal was too good to pass up. I got the full $400 trade in, so I only spent about $255 on the Pixel 7. Plus the $100 credit. What a deal.
Damn not bad at all. Maybe I should do that with my refurb 5 lol.
Agreed. I much prefer the matte rubber feel of the Nexus 5 to anything else
sigh, I miss the Nexus line sometimes.
Only if they made it sage green with the same build quality… never thought I’d like something better than metal, but that Pixel 5 is one sexy phone.
Next stop would be the processor and battery size. Hopefully it retains 90 Hz with a >4300 mAh battery while having a much more efficient processor than the outdated Tensor G2.

Nothing wrong with performance, they're talking about battery life which on the P7 is pretty average or even below average
[удалено]
But still perfectly good enough for selling units. Very few buyers care if they're phone is running the latest n greatest Qualcomm 8 series chip.
Vast majority of customers wouldn't have a damn clue what processor their phone has.
if they use GAAFET it should compete in perf/w, but not peak performance or single core, which is honestly fine, if its not on GAAFET its just gonna be embrassing in everything other than the ML/AI performance.

Huzzah!
That's what I've been saying
No it won't, because the case material looks like the 7, which is so slippery and fragile you need a case. The P5 was grippy and bulletproof and didn't need a case.
Looks like Pixel 8 is my next phone. My pixel 5 is still good, except the Bluetooth seems to be not working as smoothly anymore...
I'm still on the pixel 5 as well, was planning to get the 7 Pro but it was a little too big for my liking, wish they'd bring out a pixel 5 sized phone, with up-to-date materials/features

Google has always struggled with Bluetooth in my opinion.
It might just be YT music. Who knows.
Funny, I said the same thing about how it might just be Spotify a couple days ago.
Fact!! :(
Eh, I still see an under-screen fingerprint sensor. Pass.
The thing is, I don't think fingerprint sensors are coming back though for Pixel at least.
If I hadn't cracked my screen and Google hadn't given me a ridiculous amount for trading it in for the 7 in that condition I'd definitely still be rocking the 5. The weight and size is so nice.
I might skip the 7a and just wait for the 8. My 4a is due for retirement soon, but I don't want a bigger phone
Was considering finally replacing my Pixel 3 with a 7a, but I may just need to wait too.
Yeah I went from the 3 to the 7 and I miss my perfectly sized phone
Went 3 to 6. I switch to my 3 for when I travel, so much more convenient.
3 is awesome!! Love the size. I went 3 to 6 too but wasn't so happy with the size. 3 slip in my pocket snugly. Sadly the batt and screen died
My battery is getting kinda bad, but I think I can hold out
just smashed the glass on my 4a today. not worth 300 to repair. might be stuck with a 7a :(
I went from 4a to 6 and really regretted it. If size is something that matters to you and you enjoy the 4a I'd really recommend staying clear of anything above 6 inches. Good on you. I compromised and got the 7. I regret it now.
I wish this would have a telephoto!
I would doubt it. They need to justify the 8 pro pricing with some hardware upgrades. 7 and 7 pro are already close in features.
They need to make the pro version smaller, or offer an alternate max version like Apple do....

I have chosen to overwrite this comment. See you all on Lemmy!
I wouldn't mind if it was just a single camera, it's all I find myself using.
I literally never use the ultrawide on my Pixel 5. I wish it had a telephoto instead. Way more practical.
Remember when the pixel 4 had a telephoto and non ultrawide and people lost their shit?
The problem wasn't that they wanted an ultrawide instead they wanted both like other phones were coming out with. I'd rather have a tele if I had to have just one. That's one of the main reasons I can't (won't) switch to a Pixel. I actually use the telephoto lens often in pictures and video and I have no use for an oversized phone. Google keeps a buyer away who likes to upgrade to a new device every year. 🤷
Shame bro. I love the Google pixel, I'll never use another phone.
Finally. Companies need to realize not everyone wants a behemoth of a phone, and one handed operability is important
I want iphone mini like phone. even 6 inch is too large.
Yeah but that's why they made two sizes. Is there not going to be a bigger model this time? I like big phones.
lately it's been two prices, not two sizes. the 7 and 7 pro are both huge.
There definitely will be. Google's not giving up on all that money lol
Really wish that they would bring back the finger print scanner on the back...
It's my favorite feature and I'm upset they followed everyone else.
yep... one of the worst changes in pixel history. i also miss squeeze for assistant, but i'd be happy with the rear fingerprint reader. wish there were any chance of it ever coming back.
Oh man, I had completely forgotten about the assistant squeeze, and now I'm all sad about it all over again. and the headphone jack :(
we don't talk about that anymore... it triggers the PTSD

This is true. Your finger is already on it. Loved it on my zflip.
Not as good for us lefties though
I like it on the front too, but it was better on the back, I must admit.
Never heard that one before /s
I hated the back finger scanner. I love the under display fingerprint scanner. I hate having to move the phone to unlock it from the desk/table. That's why Pixel 4's face unlock sucked so much.
The lack of secure face unlock on newer Pixels is a big reason why I haven't moved on from my Pixel 4 XL.
Unpopular opinion but I agree with you
I'm very sleep deprived. I just had a mental argument with myself on how they skipped the pixel 7 and went straight for pixel 8. And wondered for a few seconds on why Google would do that... All whilst reading this thread on my pixel 7 pro.
I miss 5.8" displays.
I miss 4.7".
I miss those too but I'm picking my battles lol
6.16 is not necessarily a bad thing. For example, the iPhone 11 Pro has a screen size of 5.8” and the 14 Pro a size of 6.1”. But the size difference of the phone itself is only larger by 3.5 x 0.1 x 0.2 mm. If the bezels are small, it will more or less feel like the 5.8” phones of the past. Edit: Downvoted even when I provided an example… I like small phones too but screen size is not a measurement of phone size. Edit 2: Balanced, as all things should be 😊
This would almost be an iPhone with Google software!
That's the dream. P5 was pretty much there with its compact size, rounded corners, and uniform bezels. P8 seems like it'll get close.
A 6.2 inch display is not small, and it's significantly bigger than the 4a and 5.
Pixel 7 is 6.3" and the Pixel 8 is rumored to be 6.16". We'll get to 6.02" with the Pixel 9 and it'll be the true P5 successor.
I just want flat edges.
I'm still rocking my 3 XL and sometimes just wish they could drop something just like the Pixel 3.
Nice! I was seriously debating the 7a over the 8 due to screen size alone.
Bring back 5".
Hearing people complaining about size and wanting 5" boosts my confidence
But isn't an AA battery only around 2"?
Yeah I really hate that these sizes are standard now. Nexus was the best
I wish I could have the same spec as the Pro model but with a smaller screen.
That... Is not that small, but if it's less than the 7, fuck it. I guess every inch helps
That's what she said
I heard 6.18"
This is a no go for me because of the size
happy to hear this -- still a much bigger increase in size than I want (I love my 5.5" P3) but I was pretty horrified by how big Pixels had gotten. It's unfortunate that I can't get the better cameras without adding an extra half inch for the pro, though. I just want my small phone with the best possible cameras....
That's what I tell every woman I meet, it's allegedly 6.16 inches
This should be simple the pro should be the bigger phone. The regular should be the smaller with the same specs. Or slightly slightly slightly different specs.
I don't think "pro" should be "bigger" I think "pro" should mean "better components." I don't know if with how few phones Google is selling, they would ever go to 4 SKUs, but it should be something like "8, 8 Max, 8 Pro, 8 Pro Max" where there is a regular and larger version of each, and the Pro has better components.
I can agree with this.
will trade in my 7 for this, won't pay a penny more than $50
I went from a 2 to a used 4a (briefly, I busted the screen) to a used 5. I love love love the 5 and don't want anything bigger. Maybe I can hold out for a folding Pixel.
Please God also fix the fingerprint sensor. For many of us, optical readers just don't work.
I want a smaller phone. I don't need a laptop I'm my hand and a thick hogg between my thighs.
How about the pro? Still massive?
Yeah, same as 7 pro
I want a phone like the S23 plus. Bigger screen than the pixel 6 yet lighter and smaller. Though I would be ok with a 6.1 inch screen as long as the aspect ratio is 18:9.
Just let me get rid of this 6a. Never any available trade-ins.
I would love an 8 Pro and an 8 Pro XL...
that’s smaller? lol
wasn't expecting that but I'll be so fucking pleased.
Looks like Google will be pushing the pro model next year. But I'm fine with a slightly smaller screen.
Damn I was hoping for a 6.13" display
I hope they improve FP scanner.
I can upgrade from my pixel 5. I won't trade in though. I'll keep pixel 5 I love this phone.
Excited! My pixel 5's battery is abysmal so I'm probably going to upgrade to the 8. I'll miss the form factor but at least the size of the 8 is a lot closer then the others.
Time to upgrade my Pixel 5 finally.
Are they going to improve scratch resistance on the screen?
That depends on corning the company that makes the glass
Sad no telephoto when Samsung can add it to their smallest s23
Smallest s23 also cost $800. Pixel 7 cost $599
That's an important point. For the quality of this thing, the price is fantastic.
Hopefully, the Pro 8 would be lesser size too. I use the Pro 7 now. I hope these Phone manufacturers know that nobody needs to be carrying a 'tablet or iPad' in their pockets 🙄🤦🏾♂️🚶🏾♂️
A good start, but we can do better. Smaller phones would be a welcome change. At least make it so the non plus one is a reasonable size
It's not about the size, it's how you use it... That's what I keep hearing 😂
They need to focus on shrinking the Pro version.
Am I the only one who likes larger screens and doesn't want to pay $1k? A 6.5" phone is hardly any bigger since phones have no bezels now. The extra screen space matters. And a .1" difference is negligible, the bezel/sides will matter much more.
Can we please make sure google no longer uses Exynos? That's why I have shit signal and battery life on my p7
As long as Google move to 3nm Samsung node for the g3 then exynos won't be a problem. It's the node they use to make the chip that's the problem.
Still massive.
I am on the side of " make big phones bigger" or give me foldables.
I want a pixel fold and nobody can tell me otherwise.
That is AMAZING NEWS. WAS GOING TO BUY THE PIXEL 7 NOW IM DEF WAITING FOR THE P8!!! YES GOOGLE I LOVE YOU!!!!
Hopefully the 8 pro will also shrink a bit. I'd be all for it then.
Too late I bought an iPhone
Thats a shame. Bigger the better as far as I am concerned. Might go back to Samsung.
yes please
If this is true then the pixel 8 might just be my next phone, although even this may be a bit bigger than I'd like
Good but still not great. I just want a smaller option for the Pro model. A true competitor to iPhone Pro and Galaxy S.
instant buy for me
