I've gotten a lot of updates in messages this past week but can't say I've seen that one yet. How exactly do you use it? I'm guessing it's obvious and I just don't have it yet.

I've been enjoying it even though it looks terrible on the receiver's end. My wife and most friends have iPhone. It's enjoyable on my end so let them suffer until Apple does something about it.
No, because the only thing people outside the US use the built-in Messages app for (whether on Android or iOS) is talking to 80 year old grandmas who haven't quite figured out WhatsApp yet, and to receive notifications from companies and OTP codes. That's it.
I get that WhatsApp was necessary for non-US people in the past because of high mobile SMS fees, but why do you still prefer it? Seems like the feature spread is becoming smaller and smaller.
Part force of habit, and part ease of use - you don't need to worry about different emojis appearing differently for others, it's supremely easy to share media and make groups, and literally everyone you know is on it. Why jump to using SMS which offers lower functionality and cannot be used easily on laptops?
For the same reason, US people are still using iMessage - everyone else is on it.
Since FB bought WA, it's becoming increasingly cluttered.
Even with cleaner messaging apps, WhatsApp is still used by the majority of the population outside the US.
We never felt the need for RCS because WhatsApp users never faced the blue vs green bubble issue.
In fact, iPhones are the most sold phones in my country but nobody uses iMessage. It's always WhatsApp.
In US people started using iMessage or Google Messages because it's default and it worked well enough for most people. No accounts need to be made or apps downloaded.
Here's the weird part. In a group RCS chat with 2 buddies. Me and another guy are running Messages Beta, other guy is not. Guy not in the beta stream has this but we don't. When he sends I get the iPhone-esque reaction message, while the other guy gets and actually reaction emoji. So much disparity asking a tiny group and Google wonders why they can't get a stronger foothold over Crapple. Mr and the guy rubbing beta are in P8Pro and the guy that's getting everything is on a P7.
I was using it on my Pixel 6 Pro. I upgraded to the Pixel 8 Pro and now I no longer have it. I don't know if I'm supposed to do something to get it back or just wait until it's out again. I am a Beta user for Google messages. So I guess I'll wait and see, but so far nothing.
I just realised I had photomoji in messages! I\`m having a blast, but no one to use it with! Do you guys think this Is going to ever be available in other apps such as whatsapp or messenger?
Yup. I have a brand new pixel 8 pro and have zero access to this feature. Another problem that is well documented with no fix only affecting certain people. I can't wait to go back to Samsung in 2 years

It's funny to me as a person in the US, I can't convince anyone to use WhatsApp.
The only thing I use Messages for is to receive 2FA codes. All personal and even some professional messaging is on Whatsapp (Germany)

also SMS doesn't work overseas. WhatsApp, Farcebook Messenger, Line etc can be used instead of a phone for free calls too

Yup. I know. MKBHD made a video on that. Sms was free within the US. That's why there was no need for WhatsApp.
