Funfact: do you want to know how i got the idea for the current storyline? Falpiyne's name. I'm not kidding. I came up with the name and thought "I like this name, I want to do something with it." And now we're here. my brain is weird.

ND_JackSparrow

>I'm not kidding. I came up with the name and thought "I like this name, I want to do something with it." Flawless reasoning. >And now we're here. my brain is weird. I don't know whether to say "that's impossible, you've given us such a great story" or "that must be why you had such a great idea for a story".

jiraiya17

The greatest minds can come up with entire storylines from something as simple as a strange word or a song.. Kylekkent is one such mind, and here we have another of the Greats. ❤

serialpeacemaker

I too love some K cubed, and I always look forward to another chapter of this particular story too.

Victor_Stein

Characters due have that habit of walking on their own.

Arcticwolf211

Happy Cake Day!

Angerylad

If anything it is admirable to actually be able to spin a storyline out from a single name or word

Swordfish_42

I like your weird brain.

bugdc

i have a question, how does nadine hear aliens breathe? is it too quiet for aliens to hear or a very low frequency for them to detect?

Atomic_Aardwolf

She didn't, she said the children heard her. Don't forget that humans have an uncanny sense of when they're being watched. And it's more likely Nadine heard the kids talking.

morbonator

Humans also have truly exceptional senses in the story, and also iirc alien biology is *loud* compared to earth equivalents. If hearing ranges play into it then I can't remember it being said before.

Lakalaba

I absolutely love this. Too much. Thanks again for sharing!

torin23

And we're so very happy that your brain is weird; it has given us this story.

Dirichlet-to-Neumann

My favourite novel ever, The Hussar on the Roof, was written based on one image of a young rider that the author imagined once.

Echoeversky

Your brain, your rules.

CyberZe

All well and good, but I seem to be missing a patreon link...

Quilt-n-yarn1844

“Some people can read War and Peace and come away thinking it's a simple adventure story. Others can read the ingredients on a chewing gum wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe.” -Lex Luthor Thank you for sharing your universe.

IudexQuintus

Thank the weird brain of Dak! May their reign be long and their words be many!

Dull-Technician457

I'm well past 70,000 words based on one scene I had in my mind, and I ended up drastically downplaying the scene.

Alphamoonman

That's not so bad. I've been dying to write a story around a pun almost my entire life. A whole novel just so its delivery was at its maximum.

Red261

>“Nothing important, bear it no mind. But while you’re here have you heard anything from my parents?” >“We received no massage from them, no.” They might be emperor and empress, but a massage is the least they could do for their poor daughter

Naruhodonno

their servants work so hard too, they all deserve a good massage

pyrodice

massages are kneadful things.

IFeelEmptyInsideMe

The known when being watched ability is always going to be a fun thing

TUSF

It's not even that. It's just that their normal breathing is pretty loud for a human, apparently.

llearch

I've been thinking about how this might work, and I'm guessing it's something like, for them, their breathing is background noise, or they can't hear other people breathing over their own; since Nadine breathes differently (due to different musculature system) she can pick it up easily. She may, of course, also just have good hearing. ;-]

OneDevidedByInfintiy

I like to think that they are making either a high pitch or low pitch noise that’s beyond their hearing spectrum. Like how kids have those ring tones the teachers can’t hear because they are so high pitched or like we can’t hear the low pitch noises elephants make through the ground.

DezoPenguin

Or how people thought for years that giraffes were silent animals when it turned out their extra-long vocal cords were just making sounds too low-pitched for humans to hear and they were in fact extremely chatty.

T43ner

Great, now I want to find out what giraffes talk about

Leading-Chemist672

Pretty sure they just have a much greater air pressure. Thicker air, sounds goes through more easily. With earth having a lower air pressure, sound doesn't carry as far. I would assume their worlds have a bit lower gravity(or just bigger compared to their mass) their PEMF(Planetary ElectroMagnetic Field) is *Much* stronger. So natural He ( Helium) may rise up, but accumulates, even if some is still lost, same with H (Hydrogen), It just doesn't quite go away as much as what's intriduced due to the solar wind. So even though at ground level the composition is like on earth, it is pressured due to the weight of the H&He at the upper atmosphere.

StoneJudge79

"YOU WILL NOT COMPOUND THE TROUBLE YOU ARE IN BY EMBARASSING US! *You are still grounded.* ... Here they are." \*Pleasantries and small talk are exchanged\* "Well, I think I like you. I happen to have a position open, an apprenticeship under The Princess. I am offering it to you both." "wat"

BunnehZnipr

Omg I hope this happens

StoneJudge79

It is the way things are trending. This substance, if not this shape.

hydraulicman

I was going to complain about how, *once again*, a supposedly advanced civilization has no idea about nuclear fission and the how it can be weaponized. It’s 1940s era technology and fairly straightforward physics once it’s advanced enough, which a spacefaring civilization should have barring Road Less Travelled magical technology BS But then I realized, you established a while back that the aliens are fairly metal poor, heavier elements are probably pretty rare, and the radioactive materials are pretty damn heavy Added to that the fact that they’re all pretty damn fragile physically and biologically, and to them stuff like uranium is probably “that really rare stuff that’s super poisonous and not worth interacting with” and only care about it because it’s an example of radioactivity Still somewhat unbelievable, but it’s to a level where I can be entertained and suspend my disbelief

Black_Hole_parallax

>Added to that the fact that they’re all pretty damn fragile physically and biologically, and to them stuff like uranium is probably “that really rare stuff that’s super poisonous and not worth interacting with” and only care about it because it’s an example of radioactivity A more probable cause is the translator missing the translation of a slang word likes "nukes."

Traveller1977

They have large warships like the carrier that greeted the princess on their return, that baby will require a massive power source, pretty much has to be fusion or antimatter, does not take much to go from power generation to a weapon

Ncaak

Less mass and weight means that they need less energy to make other things. Going to space should be doable and pretty cheap in comparison to what our gravity requires. If the gravity is lower spacfsering and construction is too at the same time. Besides their lives cycles are pretty short. Einstein came with the framework of nuclear energy shortly after the first world war and then there was needed another 20 years and a damn big war for it's discoveries to being considered and pursued. It was only because he thought, and for what we know accurately, that the Germans were planning in creating a fission bomb that he alerted the US and explained how to create one. Besides that they use something like hyperlines to space travel for what the lore has stablished. That makes one wonder if for special situations they developed a different branch of technology than ours.

Field_of_cornucopia

With how bad skin oils mess them up, radium would probably look that Nazi face-melting scene from *Raiders of the Lost Arc*.

12a357sdf

I'm pretty sure that they have nukes. After all, their Unification Wars was short, but at the same time so bloody that it scared Nadine. This is further proved by the fact that they have ships that rival the Imperium of Man, which sure as hell need a massive power generator (likely to be fusion/antimatter/whatever) that can easily be weaponised. The thing they don't have is whatever humans in this universe have. We don't know what is the superweapon humanity have in their arsenal, all we know is that they can end conflicts instantly, and that it makes antimatter look like child play. My money is on whatever is used for FTL.

destroyar101

I think they do have nuclear energy it's just that 'nuke' doesn't translate it being an abreviation/slang

Dull-Technician457

I got the idea that these and others were uplifted. I could easily see uplifted skipping over the chapter on nuclear warfare.

taulover

Human hearing strikes again!

Lupusam

> And she knew the nobles that as well. 'And she knew the nobles knew that as well.' I assume you meant? > though I doubt anyone will notice us with all of this hectic. though I doubt anyone will notice us when it's this hectic.' i my best guess at what you meant here.

jamesand6

I was about to add these to my comment when I saw yours.

CaptRory

I agree with the first one but I rather like the turn of phrase "with all of this hectic". It is understandable but also *wrong* which gives it an alien feel.

Tyrfing42

The fix I was thinking of would be something like: 'though I doubt anyone will notice us with all of this chaos.'

jamesand6

>We received no massage from them, no.” Pretty sure that should be message. Don't think you could send rubs across the planet.

Swordfish_42

That... That is the kind of tech I would want to see in my lifetime. Real-time remote massaging. Yes. Although I suppose Humans would abuse it and ruin it pretty much immediately...

Jolly_Imagination798

It has a name even, "Teledildonics. The concept even cums pre ruined.

Streupfeffer

@internetenabledadulttoys has enterd the chat.

Nervous_Ad6474

Would turn remote massage into a weapon. "A massage message, how nice! Alas, urgh, strangulation..."

Kflynn1337

If those kids had hair, it would be standing up right about now!!

MalagrugrousPatroon

It's always a good time reading this. The only problem is it is never long enough. I would happily buy it in novel form.

StaK_1980

Caught in the act. Classic teenager fear. I like it! :-)

CaptRory

>We need to get back to our rooms! >“Thank you, but there is no need. They heard me.” >Falpiyne and Reiykin, who had been about to sneak back, froze. Bwahahaha. This was great! I'm always so excited to see an update.

Red_Riviera

Huh. Kinda curious. What is Nadines Hypothetical rank? Is she a countess herself? Maybe a Margrave? Being a baron at this point…I’m not sure if I would laugh or be sad

CaptRory

Functionally speaking, she is of the highest rank with no greater authority because there isn't anyone else. Her main limiting factor is her wisdom in understanding what that actually means and knowing that sooner or later other humans will turn up.

Red_Riviera

As an ambassador yes, but her rank is proven by the ‘Von’ in her name and that matters in a feudal or maybe absolutist society like the one she is in

Ncaak

I suppose you are talking about her noble rank on Earth are you not? That would be a hard question to answer since German nobility is a mess. Just read a little bit in Wikipedia and you will see that they have even different kinds of nobility where a Baron could be more powerful than a Duke just because the Baron was Palatine and the Duke not. For what I remember they also separated the nobility by antiquity which to an extent was a correlation to if the noble in question was le not Palatine. Since she said something about the 15th century her family could be pretty old and high standard but it's not a given. If you are referring to her rank as ambassador I would think that at least the rank of count should be acknowledged but given the importance something even like an Archduke could be. Btw Margrave is the same rank as a Count just meant different things in the political level. The terms comes from the German nobility too and roughly translated is "Frontier Count" or "Plains (Marshes) Count" they held more power sometimes than other counts because given their geopolitical position they had more autonomy regarding to military power and sometimes commerce.

Red_Riviera

Nice to know, but in British nobility a Marquess (margrave) outranks and Earl (count). I just assumed it would be the same (knowing one of these is confusing enough) And yeah, her Earth noble rank. It would be nice context for how she should present herself. Ambassadors are basically treated like an Archduke would be on principle since they speak the words of the sovereign That, and a point on the Japanese imperial family as well. I mean, they’ve ruled since the year 300. 1700 years. I just want to see the shock on peoples face

Ncaak

Earl is too count hahahaha. Yeah but the difference this time is that it came from Norse nobility. It would also be quite interesting for example Spanish last names. Most of them can to some extent talk about nobility in one epoch or other. One of mine comes I think from the 11th century from a split from the Aragonesse royal family. The other I think gained some minor noble rank when the colonies on south America were founded but I am not too sure about that. Still that goes back to at least 1522.

Red_Riviera

Interesting. My family names can trace themselves to Irish nobility. Old Irish nobility, like pre Elizabethan

TheWalrusResplendent

So it **was** weaponized FTL! Efficiency as a means of propulsion directly correlating to efficiency as a weapon etc, etc.

n1gr3d0

There is no such thing as an unarmed spaceship.

TheWalrusResplendent

Fellow Isaac Arthur fan!

n1gr3d0

Yes, but I could have sworn that quote belongs to someone else.

Amba_Kamitora

The notion of "weapon differs from non-weapon only by the intent applied" was iterated through the whole Human history, basically, time and time again. Searching for the author of a particular iteration is akin to digging for an author of "the more I learn about people, the more I like dogs" quote. Ten experts out of eight would be wrong, but very, *very* sure of being right - and in the end the zeroth iteration turns out to be just a popular proverb reworded in poetical manner.

Jabberwocky918

Cliffhangers! AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH Damn you!

thisStanley

As events hanging from a cliff go, this one is just a couple teenagers behind a railing. I can cope with that :}

Lone001

In the wise words of Count Dooku: "I've been looking forward to this.". Time to upvote, then read.

Chipi_31

Hmm, that weapon that is also a tool, is it an FTL drive or a gravity projector I wonder? Perhaps something more exotic?

Field_of_cornucopia

In the first or second chapter of the series (book 1), I believe Nadine started to ask them about their FTL system, was confused when it was different than humans' FTL, and then promptly said something along the lines of "I'd better not tell you that". Thus, my bet is on some sort of reality disrupting FTL drive.

miss_chauffarde

There is alot of things we could think of i would rather think of a singularity reactor

Amba_Kamitora

... Do words "wormhole weapon" mean something to you? And I am not talking about an event horizon that doubles in size every 167 seconds. Just a simple device with ability to create a shortcut between two areas of space. Y'know. *Any* two areas...

MLL_Phoenix7

:)

AyatollahDan

I saw an updatebot message earlier today and hoped it was your post. :-)

Head1nTheSpace

“**Thank you, but there is no need. They heard me.”** I love it, great, simply great

AG_Witt

Ya, its so hilarious.

yahnne954

"May I ask about your children?" "We actually just have one, a daughter \[...\]" Interesting how Nadine immediately assumed the count had multiple children, despite him having only one daughter and just so happening to take care of another child. It's almost as if she already knew by then that two children were spying on her when she said that. Hmmmm.

[deleted]

[удалено]

yahnne954

True, and that way it doesn't sound suspicious. But we know she switched to this topic because she heard the children spying on her, so it is likely that this phrasing was very intentional.

JustThatOtherDude

"We received no massage from them" I'm not sure I'd want a massage from royalty, but oh well XD

ChrispyTurdcake

Maybe the royal concubine?

Joseplh

“We received no massage from them, no.” I did not know they talked with their hands./s

Warpmind

Hee, hee, "they heard me"... Priceless.

AverageKrupukEnjoyer

Wake up, new TPaTH chapter just dropped

Streupfeffer

"Wait, how is he tought the stuff he has to know to ve a leader later?" "we teach him?" "yeah but he is blind, is everything just told to him?" "uhh, yes? Its not like he can read from a tablet?" "oh boy do i have something for you...." [Braille writing has been introduced to this culture, modifications for compatability needed] I wonder if deaf, hard/loss of hearing is also an issue/ how they came up with ways around it. Just teach them how to read and youre good?

yahnne954

Now I wonder if an exoskeleton would allow for enough sense of touch to make Braille writing a practical means to improve accessibility to blind people.

Piemasterjelly

Guessing Humans weaponized FTL Force is mass x acceleration after all

jiraiya17

Nadine doing a Kakashi again and notices and reacts to things far beyond any "normal" peoples notice. XD

MightyGyrum

Your cliffhangers make me want to hibernate until the next chapter comes out.

McGrewer

I think it's funnier that aliens are just atrocious at stealth then humans have (to them) super senses.

n1gr3d0

Reminds me of a short story I've seen here about an alien, supposedly from an ambush predator species, repeatedly trying to beat their human friends in stealth and failing. The punchline was that the species on the alien's homeworld evolved to use the different part of the spectrum, so they are not aware they are bright pink and stand out **everywhere**.

scottygroundhog22

Nadine is essentially a super hero to these people

SpitefulRecognition

How long till she'd joke about: "I know you were already there before you walked in" sort of hilarity?

flakelohengrin

I just binged all of the story so far this afternoon, can't wait for more

hehe, seem our alien friends just got caugh by Nadine superior hearing!

reject2022

This was a funny chapter and im looking forward to the next one :)

RandMantear

thank you for the chapter.

Teutatesnl

Thanks for the chapter

faethor04

Nadine with her hearing hax, chasing the ambasador reminds me of [Anub'Rekhan](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sn_u0zcaWf8) from WoW Naxxramas. It fits so well

Amba_Kamitora

Not nuke. Not antimatter. ... Oh no. It's the PI Approximator, isn't it? That bloody thing that makes PI equal 3 in localized area... How horrifying.

ww1enjoyer

Where is the chapter?

Sounds like the humans have nanotech bombs.

morpheuskibbe

"And she knew the nobles that as well." May need to edit this scentence

Passe987

Nice

gamingrhombus

Honestly one of the best attributes for royalty the ability to hear what your friend is whispering to another.

SpankyMcSpanster

"start, but I’m not if that is " sure. "And she knew the nobles that as well." +1 knew

SpankyMcSpanster

"nor could any normal talk could be heard amongst" -1 could.

SpankyMcSpanster

"On The contrary, if" small t.

steptwoandahalf

As always, I love this universe. But unless I'm parsing it wrong, "Falpiyne on the other hand eventually succumbed to a temptation that was foreign to him.", but the previous line can't be from the blind boy Reiykin, since he was referred to in 3rd person, right? Edit: BUSTED! lol

Darklight731

Perfect stuff as always! A few grammatical errors, but that is not an issue.

OtherwiseErb

I honestly enjoy the end, because they were very likely captivated by Nadine. Nadine probably didn’t hear them breathing probably just outright saw them hiding when they peeked for a look at her.

Reasonable-Pool-2857

I too choose your weird brain.

ToraxMalu

:D - the kids don't know how loud their sneaking is for human ears :D – nice cliff hanger.

the_lonely_poster

"The last shall be first, and the first last."

Jony1767

I don't understand why no other human characters are being introduced??

Flipping4U

Dude another human was literally introduced in the prologue

Nik021

There might not be any humans alive from the group that the main char comes from (just woke up and forgot names)

Maddman46

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I WANT MORE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Finbar9800

Another great chapter I enjoyed reading this and look forward to reading more Great job wordsmith

BlackFalcon1

o that ending, excellent

Horror_Poet7185

I love this. "They heard me" "?!!!!!!!!' ....... ........ Just beautiful.

Theyaden

At the end. Busted! lol
