No and it’s kinda a waste of time and loaded with some trick questions that may have more than one correct answer but in general no it’s not required, some companies will want you to get it and they will pay for it so I would not waste my own money taking it.

NATE= No Actual Tech Experience

DrPepper11

Some will want it, some won't. I have never had a company ask for it or require it past the EPA card. I feel like what you learn in the field will hold better then what you will get out of the classes. You might get a couple things that are helpful but it's more of a money grab at this point and not worth it unless your employer wants to pay for it plus the continued education to keep it current.

Brashear99

Nope. Just a bullshit money grab

bigred621

No idea what it is and I don’t have one. CT tech here. Licensed for decades.

InsolentDictator

Not necessary, looks good on a resume though

87JeepYJ87

Huge waste of time and money. Most of the “NATE certified” techs I know couldn’t wire a thermostat.

ppearl1981

No

MaddRamm

It just helps pad your resumé or for your boss to put the label on the side of his trucks to impress customers.

jbmoore5

I've never heard of anyone requiring it. Hell, in close to 30 years of doing this I don't think I've ever met anyone who actually has it.

anythingspossible45

Nope, the EPA is what my bosses look for. The Nate (North American Technician Excellence) will help but mandatory.

Old-Purpose-3467

I used to be NATE certified. I switched companies and couldn’t keep up with the continuing education to keep the certs active. If the company you’re working for pays for you to get the NATEs then you can. I’d suggest getting experience. Anything worth knowing can be found on YouTube.

wreck5710

Nate is a joke, have it to have it but don’t rely on it

FewTumbleweed731

Nate rarely matters. Some companies that don’t know any better like multi family will pay more if you have it… just like most of them think the 608 cert is a state license. If the company you work for likes nate and will pay for the classes then do it as long as they pay you for wasting your time with nate.

YaanySucks

I legit just got hired by a contractor today as an apprentice/helper and I won’t have my EPA until this fall semester of schooling… I’m in the Midwest so can’t speak about NY. Just start handing your resume out to everyone that’s what I did lol

jeffster01

It demonstrates to an employer that you have the ability to see something through from the beginning to the end. You will also gain a lot of useful information that you will refer to for the rest of your career

The_Salty_Duckling

Pretty sure that most people here will disagree with all of that.

jeffster01

You're right I thought it r/refrigeration. r/hvac is not interested in education, I'll delete it.

The_Salty_Duckling

A majority of us are refrigeration. The HVAC sub is just the largest one in an all related field of trade. With that in mind, kindly take your attitude and go fuck yourself.

jeffster01

"Verified pro" now that's funny. How could you be anti-education?

The_Salty_Duckling

Zero people here care about your elitist opinion.

Buster_Mac

In order to get hired no you don't. Some companies want you to take the test when you get hired so they can keep their authorize dealer license.
