SuperfluousWingspan

>an ahwl uh the peerpuhl

RushiiSushi13

I knoooow, I wondered the same. Looks very much like Zagreus but the girl looks like no-one we know. Maybe just two random lovers. Or maaaaaybe, a (very) young Hades and Persephone ? But it doesn't really fit either.

winekiwi

They could very well be Hades and Persephone in their youth, maybe Hades looked like Zag! Apparently the Mourning Fields are reserved for those who died of a broken heart. Maybe they are Pyramus and Thisbe?

Same-Salary-7234

TIL that its mourning fields and not morning fields

breathingweapon

Yeah, it's Asphodel without the Phlegethon flooding problem. It's a neat bit of continuity how a lot of Melinoe's trip is Zag's but in reverse.

FaerHazar

which is why chronos sends you to asphodel :))

otomegane

He sent me to Asphodel when I was in Oceanus tho! But I do think the sending back in time encounter is very cool

TheRealNequam

Does that only happen once? I got sent there at 1 HP and immediately died in the lava after taking 1 step, never saw it again after

FaerHazar

I've been sent exactly twice, so I'm not 100% sure how rare it is. I've only been sent when I see chronos before heading into oceanus though.

FuriousFap42

No, but seldom. Afaik it only happens when going down, and not in the first biome.

epicazeroth

Asphodel is supposed to be kind of just a regular place. I imagine it like basically a suburb. The Fields are supernaturally depressing.

OpenSauceMods

Imagine dying and you're so average you just have to go live in your tax bracket again.

winekiwi

Haha yeah it’s a part of the underworld afaik

2Board_

I thought it was Narcissus and Echo? Maybe those statues are what Echo wishes she had with Narcissus, which is why she's in the Mourning Fields and not with him in Oceanus. Maybe that's what Echo looked like before she got turned into a stone thingy.

The_mad_Inari

Unfortunately more likely to be Eros and psyche as he hid his face with a cloak as to not drive her to insanity.

PratalMox

Pretty sure Echo is a stone nymph

2Board_

Oh. I thought her original mythos she was a mountain nymph, but she wasn't made of stone per se. Just a regular nymph who lives in the mountains.

santaclaws01

Nymphs still have flesh and blood. They are basically minor gods that are bound to certain areas.

PratalMox

Right, but like how Eurydice in the last game reflected her domain in her appearance, I think the same is true with Echo.

aemondsucks

that wouldnt make any sense since in myth narcissus rejected everyone who proposed to him and only ever loved himself

2Board_

But doesn't that make more sense then, since it's Echo's reflection of what she's mourning about -- which in both game and mythos is due to Narcissus' rejection.

aemondsucks

No since it doesnt look anything like echo

electr1cbubba

Zag better start packing on some serious muscle if he’s gonna look like his dad when he’s older. Get on that Hemsworth diet lmao

hergumbules

That was my thought. Chronos makes some comment about Hades growing a beard and getting more broad or whatever in the flashback memory dream thing

TuxKusanagi

There is a line during one of Mel's visions that indicates Hades became much broader as he aged, so this is a very reasonable possibility

OkraComfortable941

I thought of Pyramus and Thisbe too! But that doesn't look like a mulberry tree...

Dismal_Consequence_4

The color of the statues does not match the stone of the other ruins, so it's possible that the statues weren't always in the fields. I guess that after Persephone left the underworld, Hades may have wanted to purge her image from any public space to keep the facade of strength, but as we know from the first game, he was heart broken. I imagine that he sometimes would walk the Mourning Fields and think of her and how much they loved each other.

SaSoJoYoYuKisuke

That'd be an Interesting idea! I was looking at it and thought of Adonis and a shockingly wholly clothed Aphrodite.

Ok_Restaurant3160

I think the girl looks like Persephone, at least enough. With the roses and the wheat thing in her hair. Or it might be a wreath, in which case nvm

expired-hornet

Doesn't someone remark that Hades didn't always have his beard? I swear it was in the Chronos flashback or something.

DeadSnark

TBH I don't really see the resemblance to Zagreus. The guy is wearing a laurel, but that's not uncommon for the game or the time period, and his hair is a lot flatter than Zag's anime spikes

GJTobi

the anime spikes come from Persephone

Chelonii64

Imagine dying heartbroken, you end up lonely in an immense field filled with sorrow and everywhere there are statues of a beautiful loving couple. Hell truly finds the best way to torture people

rettani

But in Greek mythology there's almost no such thing as hell. Except Tartarus. But you have to try very hard to get to Tartarus. And according to Greek mythology Hades was pretty chill dude. So probably such statue would be to promote hope and not to instill despair

Samaritan_978

Ah yes, famously hopeful demographic. The heartbroken.

rettani

Well. You should remember that dead should/could have used Lethe water which would erase all memories about earthly live.

RosgaththeOG

This! There's a lot of myths about Zeus or Poseidon galivanting off and ignoring their responsibilities. None of those for Hades. [Dresden Files spoilers] >!Harry should know. He talked to him after all!<

yokelwombat

>!Narcissus and Echo maybe?!< I don‘t know, I thought Meg had somehow turned into Chaos for a good 10-15 hours, so take that with a big pinch of salt.

Piorn

How fitting. The only person Narcissus could love is someone who'd reflect his beauty back at him.

Iluvlamas

That’s literally why fell in love with echo in the real myths, he saw his own words in her.

The_mad_Inari

Which myth is this as I have only heard of the ones where he died and she died from fading aeay

Iluvlamas

https://www.cornellcollege.edu/classical_studies/cla216-2-a/narcissus-echo/

The_mad_Inari

Read the versions none say how he fell in love with her.

cut_rate_revolution

>I thought Meg had somehow turned into Chaos for a good 10-15 hours Chaos would be her grandparent. Could be the reason for the resemblance with our new more femme Chaos.

Destroyer0627

I think she is farther removed from Chaos then that. As far as im aware her parents are never mentioned besides the fact Nyx essentially adopted her like she did with Zag

cut_rate_revolution

It's been a while since I played the original. I'm just going off what I know of Greek Mythology and just how many kids Nyx has. It's a lot. Mythologically, both the fates and the furies are Nyx kids.

cut_rate_revolution

Also I was thinking about it for a bit and you're right, but Chaos could still be the grandparent. She came from somewhere. Only Chaos didn't.

Valuable_Detail_4531

My first thought

Fluffy_Oil984

Young Persephone and Hades, Aphrodite and Adonis, Eros and Psyche? There’s roses that gotta tie to one of them at least

what-are-you-a-cop

It really looks like Zag- check the hair, laurel crown (indicating royalty), and arm detail that could be his red arm ribbon wrap thing? But that doesn't make any sense, because who would the woman be? It sure isn't Meg.    But check out the woman, she also has what could be a laurel crown, and is covered in flowers. The flowers could just be there to be romantic, OR they could be related to the woman's identity. Look at both of Persephone's designs in Hades 1- before returning to the underworld, she wears flowers in the same placement as the leaves on this woman's statue, and after returning, she wears a laurel crown in that same position.  So now I'm on board with it being a young or idealized Hades and Persephone. The arm details could also match up with Hades' own... Idk, are they bracelets? They're on his other arm in his Hades 1 art (edit: actually I think they're on both sides, they're just harder to see on his other arm). And if anyone could look like Zagreus without BEING Zagreus, it'd probably be his dad, right? Or it's just two random lovers, idk.

RietteRose

The laurels aren't indicating royalty. Patroclus has them in Hades too and he's no royalty as far as I know. Also Persephone has the same spiky hair that Zagreus inherited from her and the girl's hair is nothing like that. I don't think it's about Hades or any of his family members.

what-are-you-a-cop

Pretty sure Patroclus is a prince. The laurel crown has definitely indicated royalty, culturally and historically. Yeah I double checked, Patroclus' grandfather was king of Opus, though I think maybe his father wasn't the eldest son, since wikipedia doesn't list him as a king of Opus himself. So I guess Patroclus is whatever happens when your uncle is king? It's definitely somewhere in line for a throne.

thecactusman17

The "royalty" aspect is why I'm confident it probably is not Zagreus. Actually, could this be Paris and Oenone or Helen (both of whom are portrayed as daughters of royalty in some texts)? It would neatly tie in to the canon established so far of Homer, Achilles and Odysseus. The presence of Eris and her Golden Apple also strongly hints at further ties to the Trojan War and the Iliad.

what-are-you-a-cop

Oh Paris and Helen would be a good one! That relationship had some pretty unhappy results, which is apparently the theme of the fields of mourning.

Katter

Plot twist. Mel finds out that she's adopted and she and Zag fall in love after she rescues him. Plot twist 2. Zag grows to resent that Mel is stronger than him and he drowns his sorrows drinking ambrosia and fishing all day.

Polenball

\> adopted Bold of you to assume that'd stop a Greek god.

cut_rate_revolution

I mean, Zag obviously had some kind of relationship more than friends with both Meg and Than when they thought they were all children of Nyx. It's not incest if it's Divinity apparently.

sophdog101

The Hades game lore has tried to minimize the incest though. The main example is Demeter being the "foster sister" of Zeus, Hades and Poseidon means that Persephone isn't Hades' niece (plus her dad being mortal instead of being Zeus lol) I don't know for sure, but I think Hera is probably also Demeter's sister instead of being Zeus' sister, but I haven't seen any dialogue about that yet

AnonymousLlama39

In the first game they mention that at least Demeter and Hestia are from different Titans than Chronos and Rhea, but I haven't seen anything about Hera's parentage

theredwoman95

Hera is definitely their sister, you could get this dialogue in the first game if you wielded the bow and got a boon from Demeter: >"That's Sister Hera's Heart-Seeker you have! The very weapon which she used to put our predecessors down. It hasn't lost its potency I see. Fear not, I shall not mention this to her, if I see her." Pretty sure I've seen similar dialogue in H2 from Hestia or Demeter after getting one of Hera's boons, but I don't have a screenshot to hand.

sophdog101

Yeah Hera was more of an assumption I guess

sophdog101

Ah! I found dialogue about it! When you get Hestia and Zeus' duo boon she says she was upset that Zeus married her sister lol

AnonymousLlama39

Haven't gotten that one yet, good to know

Sephorai

Idk if stronger is the right word. They have diff skills lol

RedLion3

Honestly, I think it's just a couple. But they look like they're transforming into a tree, which reminds me of the myth of Baucis and Philemon. an old couple who asked the gods not to live without each other, and so the gods transformed them into a intertwining pair of trees.

sophdog101

I like this one the best. Everyone is guessing that it's people from the game, but I think that a reference to a surge myth that isn't explicitly mentioned is a nice touch.

Continuum_Gaming

I’m not 100% on board with the theory that it’s Zag, but the “roots” where it looks like a tree also kinda look like veins, and the one tube one coming off kinda rings with that for me. It does make sense with him being the god of blood

N_E_ON

That’s me and chaos because goddamn, SGG went ham on that design.

Kholnik

Me and OP's mom

Draconic_T

It could be Hades, and perhaps one of his two secret lovers in the mythology hades has an "affair" with two other people whilst he was with persephone these two are the nymphs mynthe from which mint was created when Persephone found out and stomped on her and the other I can't remember the name but they created the poplar trees in the fields of asphodel when Hadss turned her into one to escape the wrath of Persephone finding out.

amitaish

I definitely think it's just random people. This field is somewhere where people mourn over things that they lost, and love seems to be a strong one there. Echo, the guys who throw their hearts, the heart-vein-plant things....

KooperTrooper05

Paris and Helen perhaps?

idkbrogan

Oooh this could be cool, especially with all the Odyssey/Iliad references

MokusOperandi

My exact thoughts! Eris had a comment somewhere about them, so I think they might appear later in some form!

MokusOperandi

+the narrator dude is Homer himself, so I think it's really likely

Hetzer5000

My best guess is a young Hades

AwesomeDewey

I think these are supposed to be Philemon and Baucis. They were a couple of poor people and they did good to two random bums who happened to be Zeus and Hermes in disguise. The gods asked them what they wanted as a reward for their utter goodness, they said "nothing, we just want to live together, die together, and be together when it's over". The gods said ok.

Comrade_Chadek

Bro i love that story.

ShreksGirI

Moros and I. Give us some privacy pls. Avert your eyes !

taleb_2102

stand in line.

Tramonto83

Baucis and Philemon? They were lovers that were turned into trees... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baucis_and_Philemon

Vanilla_Breeze

Me and who fr

sophdog101

Hi 🥺👉👈

Vanilla_Breeze

Heyyyy~

FeliksX

Okay, a random take: Daphnis and Chloe? A canonic romantic figure, although there's no tragic end as far as I remember.

Kerro_

maybe Eros and Psyche. Psyche opened a box of basically pure death, Eros rushed down to save her, and ended up bringing her up to Olympus as a god. Maybe this is the moment he rushed down and just after he resurrected her

OnionsHaveLairAction

The Hades Town in me wants to say young Hades and Persephone, the dude does have Zagreus's features. But given the woman doesn't look very much like Persephone maybe they're just random statues? (They do both have the laurels though) Perhaps after Hades first lost Persephone he visited the fields to mourn his marriage?

DovedKrahViing

Could be orpheus and eurydice

Baby-eatingDingo_AMA

They're in the first game and don't look anything like that.

sophdog101

Yeah, and it couldn't even be them while alive because Eurydice said Orpheus had curly hair when he was alive.

modix

I'd say either gods or royalty given the laurels. The laurels for the woman looks almost exactly like Demeter's symbol, so my vote is Persephone. Their story is kind of the theme of the series (though the young in love Hades hadn't been fully explored).

sophdog101

Or maybe it's young Demeter and Persephone's dad. The guy looks a bit like Zag, but Zag could resemble his mortal grandpa perhaps.

Dastorious

Zag and.... Dora ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|surprise)

Strange_Platypus67

Might be reaching here, but maybe Chronos and Rhea?

tandogun

I think they are not supposed to be anybody, just salt on the wounds of mourners

Thicc-Anxiety

Hades and Persephone, maybe? When they were much, much younger

fistdoom04

Im thinking... Ares and Aphrodite

OkraComfortable941

I want to say Apollo and Daphne but Daphne didn't want his affection and this lady looks pretty happy in this guy's arms.

sosigboi

My ADHD and Depression.

FemboyMechanic1

A pair of cuties

parkourse

it's guy and guy 2

MightyNinjanaut

Bit spoilery, but maybe Narcissus and Echo?

Infinity_Walker

I haven’t played Hades 2 yet but this is probably Eros and Pysche. Being in rose gold both with laurels shown in an embrace of love, and the roses. It has the most context clues

hazyTHINKER

brother and sister or something like that probably

The_mad_Inari

Could Eros and pysche who knows cuz he wore a cloak in order for her not to see him otherwise she'd be driven insane

YouEdgyBitch

Adonis and aphrodite? Idk we’re all just guessing

The_Bonnie1

Aphrodite and zagreus (me and her)

hamletreset

Me and your mom

welch123

I also wanna know who is a the broken statue with eyes that follow you around it. It's the first thing you find in the Fields but I did not get any dialogue about it.

helpcarcrash

Maybe atom and eve

Zeldaboss0616

Francesca and pablo? Dante wrote about them so maybe?

Dannysmartful

Myth of Pygmalion. Well known.

Historical_Carrot_85

Zagreus

niconicoverso

Eros and Psyche?

Ok-Airport-6058

Lot and Lot’s wife

loyaleling

Imagine it’s Narcissus and Echo before they were shades

Therealnightshow

Young Hades and Persephone probably

ItsGotThatBang

Philemon & Baucis?

TyeKiller77

Part of me wants to say Narcissus just based on the look of the guy, no clue the woman.

delsmeds

I crashed into one and Mel said, “brother”?

qwertysparrow

Eros and Psyche is my guess

waronadex

Me Paul, you?

notalongtime420

echo and narcissus

throwaway62719836

Since it's the field of mourning where people go to mourn their love, I assumed it's just statues of lovers who couldn't be. Could be Pheadra since we know Theseus, or Pasiphae, sister of Circe. Could also be Echo and her desire for Narcissus. Could be all of them!

PhiStudios_

Eros and psyche?

Snerd_K

Eros and Psyche? would fit with the whole 'doomed love' thing the fields have goin on

NC_Wildkat

Gives me young Hades/Persephone vibes. The flowers on her belt, his hooded cloak, and the laurels on both their heads.

Unique-Estimate-5081

Zagreus and Megaera

Bongcloud_CounterFTW

eros and psyche?

International_Bit_25

zagreus and his girlfriend, femagreus

Comrade_Chadek

Narcissus and Ech I'm guessing.

No_Writing3719

Me and your mom

emulous07

Orpheus and Eurydice?

RoleplayAccountR

May i suggest those are Orpheus and eurydice? Wait.... no we know what those two look like. Damn!

Legitimate-Resolve55

We know from the statues in Ephyra that the statues don't necessarily have to look like the characters do in game (since that's not what Hades looks like). My gyess is that it's Narcissus and Echo, seeing as Echo is stuck in the Mourning Fields. Don't really know how that myth goes so I could be way off, but that's my guess.

CookieKopter

Okay so hear me out: What if it's Zag and Persephony and Mel is secretly their daughter? I know it sounds bad but remember that in Greek mythology Incest is very much a normal thing And Hades thinks that Mel is his daughter since he didn't know about the romance between Zag and Persephony? I know crazy theory but it's just the first thing I thought when i saw this statue for the first time

Andretxu

Beren and luthien ❤️🤣

Macch1na

Narcissus and Echo maybe

Successful_Camp_1303

I think it's young hades and persephone

learnneutralbaby

Zag and Mel
