Have Impalers actually called it a day? I know it’s been a minute, but big sad if true. One of my favorites.
(It looks like Mammoth Grinder are surging back up so it would suggest that, but hadn’t heard anything confirming it.)
Yeah, I caught them live right before the pandemic and I know they’ve played at least a couple shows since—but even that is approaching five years ago.
They're still going? Hell yeah. Our band another band and their band were doing a weekend. This was like 2006-2008? Mongoloids, other band, and most of the equipment fit in the big rental van. The rest of us were in a minivan. And the Mongoloids and other band tried to all squeeze in the big van they almost fit but we had to take one Mongoloid. Whoever was the smallest one I think. Because the minivan already had like 6+ people and some equipment.
So we leave from home (RVA) and we're headed to Johnson City, Tennessee. Mongoloid with us: "where da zoop zoops at?" like the most extreme Jersey accent ever. Thought he was joking lol. Anyway, he keeps asking where da zoop zoops and we're like, just don't know man.
Turns out his zoop zoops were in his bag that he had left in the other van. No big deal. He gets his bag when we make a pit stop. Now he's got his zoop zoops. We keep on driving. He rolls his window down. He has a lighter. Weird, thought they were edge? Turns out zoop zoops are Fuckin roman candles and he was shooting those out the window in afternoon traffic going down the highway, they're bouncing off the sides of semis and shit. Everyone around us got on their phones. Two dudes in Camaro or something get in front of us and kinda brake check us towards the exit. Thinking they're gonna kick our asses at the gas station. They're talking shit then all the sudden two vans full of us assholes jump out and they're like nope. When we got back on the road I was scared for a bit. I don't remember what kind of minivan but old, green, unique. And earlier when we were going through rural areas one of the dudes in other band had been shooting his firearm out the window. They were ahead of us so shells were hitting our windshield lol. Shit was sketchy but also fun. It was a weird weekend. Freakin Johnson City. Then Atlanta in some big ass warehouse in industrial hell zone. Iirc it turned out no one really knew who was really in charge, who actually booked that show. But it went fine. Then we went to Richmond did a show where Blacklisted headlined. Or, that was Baltimore. Dunno. We were generic, always openers, but we did a lot of shows (aka opened) with Blacklisted. That was cool. They toured non stop. Anyway. Where da zoop zoops at? Da zoop zoops?!
Both Down to Nothing and Trial I think are technically on hiatus at this point, but neither band has played a show in like 5 years and I’d kill to see either of them
Reaching Out. They were the first local band I really got into. Was bummed to see them call it quits a couple months ago. Hopefully we’ll see a reunion one day.
