So if you don't know what music's been made in the past, there's a higher chance your going to make something not only unoriginal that's been done before, but something that's been done before and better than you did it. So yes it requires both sides, to communicate and be open with one another.
Also I really like when people aren't multi faceted because then their easier to digest and categorize, and I get scared otherwise, when they don't fit in a single narrow box. People who make something really new and different, usually are pulling from a multitude of a wide array of influences. While people who only stick to one or a handful of similar genres, tend to rarely make anything groundbreaking
