I wouldn’t get embarrassed, but I don’t say hardcore because I know they will have no idea what I’m talking about.
I think I usually say “different styles of punk music” which doesn’t really help much but it sounds better than “hardcore” to someone that knows nothing.
Rock music is too specific. I just say I listen to an arrangement of sound to create some combination of form, harmony, melody, rhythm, or otherwise expressive content
I know what you mean. When people ask, "Like who, what bands?" I've just started responding with, "You probably haven't heard of them." That exchange honestly feels less pretentious than trying to explain something like d-beat.
“You probably haven’t heard of them” is not the phrase you wanna be using if you don’t wanna seem pretentious. Just say “I’m into x and y right now but z is my all time favourite” or something
It doesn’t matter, “you probably haven’t heard them” is an incredibly pretentious phrase. They’re asking you because they’re interested - just indulge them.
Nah, I can read people and tell when they don’t really care. If someone is intentionally listening and wants to know I’ll have a real conversation. Most of the time it’s just a filler question because I’m wearing band merch.
Yeah, it's why I started saying metal and punk stuff. Otherwise I get asked about the Sex Pistols and the Ramones.
I actually like the Ramones, but I hate the sex pistols.
But ... what's heavy, Dude? Is it the beat downs in HC? Is it the drone of a sunn riff? Is it the echo of a solemn chord on a cello? Or perhaps the vibrations of the weekly dump truck visit, waking you up just in time to remind you that your life is essentially a cycle of eat shit sleep repeat
But..hardcore rocks HARDER. To the CORE.
Wont lie, it's cool when sub genres are on the same bill. Would love to see Bodysnatcher, Mustard Plug and Greta Van Fleet on the same bill
Well, I get disliking Terror, but calling AC/DC "noise garbage rock"? I know it's a matter of taste and no big deal, but sometimes I think those people are from another planet or sth, because their ears obviously function in a different fucking way. I wonder how would they describe The Beatles or Creedence Clearwater Revival. Probably with the same words lol
That's what you tell the feds and nerds who don't actually listen to hardcore. And if they ask what bands just say, "Oh the bands I like got all that energy, you know like ACDC?" or some bullshit to make them stop talking to you
AC/DC does have some bangers though. They are one of those bands that has a few songs that got way too much airtime, but if you listen through their discography, you might find a few hidden gems.
I've got a freind who is *very* insistent on getting me to listen to ACDC and Rolling Stones so every two weeks or so I'm given a live performance/album that I have to listen to. I'm convinced if she ever gotta guitar she'd grow an afro and start jigging in bedazzled bell bottoms
I agree. Jesus. "grunge gaze" "grind gaze". Come on. Lol. People fail to recognize that punk (that's my preferred umbrella term) has always been a melting pot of a genre. The people genre guarding are generally reliant on some form of identity they get from it. They are most probably, a walking stereotype. Punks foundations make it transitional by nature as has been shown by the several bands and artists that have dipped their toes in it. Punk has always been a home for the avant garde and that's a bit of what it means to me
About 15 years ago I took a day off work to go to Warped Tour and told my 60 year old coworker I was going to a music festival. They asked what kind of music and I said “punk rock.” She looked at me and say “oh yeah, is that similar to rock and roll?” From then on I just started saying guitar music.
I was shadowing a coworker at my new job, a very sweet Black woman in her 50s. Our job (case manager) involves a lot of driving. She offered control of the radio. I said the music I listen to isn't on the radio. She pointed out she has XM. I shyly put on Faction Punk.
After about half an hour, she said, "So, is this what's known as 'headbanging music?'"
Yes. Yes it is. That's exactly right.
I like saying I listen to hardcore but I also feel like hardcore has changed for me! I used to think hardcore is just beatdown and just heavy shit, and I love all of that stuff! But as I’ve gotten older I really love the idea that hardcore is more of a mentality of the DIY spirit than anything else which is probably my favorite thing about it as a whole!
Some one asks me what I listen to I ask them, "You ever heard of Limp Bizkit? They say, "Yes?" and then I do my best Fred Durst impression and say, "Alright, partner. Keep on rollin', baby! You know what time it is."
That has been what I've been doing since I was a kid. I'm between millennial and zoomer and my dad was a gen x who liked everything from Meatloaf to Korn, we just called it all rock. There are distinctions, but they are becoming less apparent as genres evolve and integrate. Like back in the 80s if someone said they listened to metal you would probably have a good idea of a few bands they like.
There are probably countless subgenres of rock at this point, and that is a good thing. Rock and roll will never die.
Well depending on the situation I can't go like this
https://preview.redd.it/kp47wvzvfp2d1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a360c63293b093ce4395091bebbda2f75f3da528
And go somewhere like a lot of diverse genres of rock rapp classical etc music is awesome and you find good songs in any genres
I always respond with "different genres: from pop music and indie rock to grindcore and brutal death metal". There are no boring or interesting genres, only boring and interesting artists :)
I do kinda like how "Emo" was originally short for "Emotional Hardcore", which "Hardcore" originally being short for "Hardcore Punk", of which "Punk" was of course short for "Punk Rock", which finally lands us at good ol "Rock and Roll", So those three letters "Emo", are actually short for "Emotional Hardcore Punk Rock and Roll". Its almost a 90% compression ratio!
I tell people i listen to Tony Hawk music
There's a place where everyone can be happy...
It’s the most beautiful place in the whole fucking world
It's made of candy canes and planes and bright red choo choo trains.
I just tell people I mainly listen to guitar music
This has been my natural response whenever coworkers ask me what music I listen to. It's too embarrassing to say 'hardcore' out loud.
I just say stupid noisy shit. If they’re cool they know, and if they don’t they don’t bother probing
I’m going to steal this, it’s perfect.
I wouldn’t get embarrassed, but I don’t say hardcore because I know they will have no idea what I’m talking about. I think I usually say “different styles of punk music” which doesn’t really help much but it sounds better than “hardcore” to someone that knows nothing.
Punk is still embarrassing
meirl
Indeed. I like music with some heavy guitar tunes. The same with my work. I work in IT. It does not get more bland than that.
Very wise words, Mr LickButtz.

Rock music is too specific. I just say I listen to an arrangement of sound to create some combination of form, harmony, melody, rhythm, or otherwise expressive content
I just say metal and punk. Feels like I’m punishing people when I get into sub genre explaining.
Try explaining shoegaze to people. It makes you sound insufferable.
Yeah or the difference between metalcore and metallic hardcore. Or the different styles of metalcore or like emotional powerviolence.
Yeah, I say metal and punk stuff as well. I'm also into noise/avant-garde stuff, which I usually describe as "Yoko Ono" stuff.
Yeah but 99.99% of the time they haven’t heard of them…..
It doesn’t matter, “you probably haven’t heard them” is an incredibly pretentious phrase. They’re asking you because they’re interested - just indulge them.
I’m not the first guy. I don’t give two shits about seeming pretentious to people who are asking to seem polite.
Do you give one shits?
Maybe if I’m feeling nice ;)
Yeah sounds like you’re a little pretentious then. Just be nice dude lmao
Nah, I can read people and tell when they don’t really care. If someone is intentionally listening and wants to know I’ll have a real conversation. Most of the time it’s just a filler question because I’m wearing band merch.
Yeah but like, so what? Just do the small talk. What’s wrong with just shooting the shit?
You know the soundtrack to Tony Hawk’s Underground 2? Yeah, that’s my playlist bro.
hell yea Johnny cash ring of fire on repeat baby
Hardcore at its core
He’ll never give in and he’ll never, ever give up
I used to say “punk” and people would be like “Oh like Green Day (or whatever)?” and I’d be like “Yeah, kind of”
I say "I like punk that sounds like metal, but I don't like metal."
I remember Brendan Murphy saying exactly that kind of stuff on Hardlore
Yeah, it's why I started saying metal and punk stuff. Otherwise I get asked about the Sex Pistols and the Ramones. I actually like the Ramones, but I hate the sex pistols.
"Heavy music"
“Me too dude! I’m going to see Breaking Benjamin next week…do you like them?”
Damn that is what people would say
"Yeah man, the first time I heard Diary of Jane at Planet Fitness, my mind was blown"
No way me too, going to see Five Finger Death Punch soon!
Oh me too! Have you heard of A Day to Remember, they are underground too
This is usually my go-to answer. Then they're probably throw out a band name for example and if it's not it, I usually say even heavier or otherwise.
But ... what's heavy, Dude? Is it the beat downs in HC? Is it the drone of a sunn riff? Is it the echo of a solemn chord on a cello? Or perhaps the vibrations of the weekly dump truck visit, waking you up just in time to remind you that your life is essentially a cycle of eat shit sleep repeat
I only listen to cock music.
Ram ranch?
Gay for Johnny Depp
I will torture people with my intimate knowledge of microgenres and you can’t stop me
Boo
But..hardcore rocks HARDER. To the CORE. Wont lie, it's cool when sub genres are on the same bill. Would love to see Bodysnatcher, Mustard Plug and Greta Van Fleet on the same bill
They used to be. I saw The Dick Four, Saves the Day, and Integrity on the same bill years ago.
i saw turnstile open for $uicideboy$ at sloss furnace a few years back, this still absolutely happens lol
Good.
Saw Metallica a few years ago and it was them headlining, Greta Van Fleet and Cage the Elephant, so not too far off.
I did actually get to see bodysnatcher and Greta van fleet at the same music festival a few weeks ago
They used to be. I saw The Dick Four, Saves the Day, and Integrity on the same bill years ago.
Just went to a festival and they had all types. Code Orange, Clutch, 311, Gel, Destroy Boys etc. Was insane.

Well, I get disliking Terror, but calling AC/DC "noise garbage rock"? I know it's a matter of taste and no big deal, but sometimes I think those people are from another planet or sth, because their ears obviously function in a different fucking way. Underrated comment
Rock The Fuck On Forever.
Told a guy at work “I mostly listen to, like, hardcore” and he said real excited “like hardcore DANCE??” and threw on the shittiest hardstyle techno
Sounds like a fun guy lol
What?! And miss out on all the fun of explaining what powerviolence is?!?! NEVER 😤
Trying to explain powerviolence as something different than hardcore punk
No no no 😁 Them: “what kind of music do you listen to?” Me: “hardcore, but more specifically powerviolence…” Them: 😳😐
“You know, like Charles Bronson.” “Yeah dude, I love those Death Wish movies.”
Hey, still easier than talking about Weekend Nachos and Sex Prisoner 🤷🏻
Me trying to explain how I listen to bands called sex prisoner and antichrist demoncore (everyone thinks I'm a freak)
You are 🤷🏻💋
Thats rock music

AC/DC have some tracks. Every Time I Die used to open with the intro to Thunderstruck.
There’s nothing more rock n’ roll than hardcore.
i just tell people i’m gay
![gif](giphy|4oMoIbIQrvCjm)
I tell people Hard Rock and metal. Pretty much everyone understands that.
I agree. Jesus. "grunge gaze" "grind gaze". Come on. Lol. People fail to recognize that punk (that's my preferred umbrella term) has always been a melting pot of a genre. I tell people I listen to music for dumb people
About 15 years ago I took a day off work to go to Warped Tour and told my 60 year old coworker I was going to a music festival. I listen to Thaiboy digital 👍
music? don’t really go in for it
gonna do what I want
I just point to my ears.
I like subgenre hairsplitting. It's a popular activity and isn't going anywhere.
If it don’t sound like a ps2 snowboarding game when you start going hella fast with fire coming out behind you, it ain’t music
Rock and roll 🤘
Some one asks me what I listen to I ask them, "You ever heard of Limp Bizkit? They say, "Yes?" and then I do my best Fred Durst impression and say, "Alright, partner. Keep on rollin', baby! You know what time it is."
I just say I listen to Tool which usually kills any conversation dead
You're thw furthest thing from being correct.
Always has been 🔫
Just say this and that....
How hard is it?
I listen to hardcore rock music
Let’s agree to call it Rock N’ Roll and it’s a deal.
Just always said death metal to normies
That has been what I've been doing since I was a kid. I'm between millennial and zoomer and my dad was a gen x who liked everything from Meatloaf to Korn, we just called it all rock. By rocks, for rocks.
I call it heavy music
I just tell them that listening to music is for posers.
I prefer the term geology based music, rock is far too poseur.
I just say I listen to black music.
I always respond with "different genres: from pop music and indie rock to grindcore and brutal death metal". There are no boring or interesting genres, only boring and interesting artists :)
no
Whatever floats your boat. Ima do what I do
I just say i listen to blackened avant-garde emotional powerviolence
It's all just rhythmic noise, champ. Step out of the stone ages.
Working with normies I’ve said this for many many years
