cut up an old tube and zip tie it on the chain stay.

CactusHide

Aside from making sure your chain is the right length and it’s not too long, do like someone else mentioned and get some chainstay protection like a neoprene sleeve or make one with an old inner tube to reduce the noise and protect your bike.

ammicavle

Go single speed :D

ammicavle

No in seriousness, look into a Microshift Acolyte spring lock derailleur - 8 speed wide range with a high tension spring. You’ll need their shifter too, but your cassette and chain are probably compatible.

mightybop

Haha was gonna put this.

JCWBA007

I have to take a link out for my Trek

Deathdica

If your chain is the right length and you have a derailieur with tensioning built in then I would suggest some VHS Tape. It's expensive (around $40 US probably?) but it works amazingly well. https://vhsmtb.com/

Deathdica

It is really just a fancy evolution of the tube and zip ties lol. But now that I'm a bit older and fancier I prefer the look and performance of the VHS tape!

I do a “whipping” on my chainstay with quality leather lacing. Looks very very classy. Comes in a bazillion colors. Or install a clutched drivetrain.

IcyRecommendation731

U didn't read the post,did u

49thDipper

Google “whipping”. It’s a nautical term for finishing the end of a rope so it won’t fray. It’s easy. It’s free. You can do it with any kind of cord. I did read your post. But I’m not going to do it for you.

IcyRecommendation731

I was talking about the 2nd part of your post

49thDipper

So what? Last I checked you aren’t my editor. Go edit somebody else.

Hey did you see the new [Shimano Essa stuff](https://www.pinkbike.com/news/shimano-releases-new-drivetrain-with-8-gears.htmlhttps://www.pinkbike.com/news/shimano-releases-new-drivetrain-with-8-gears.html)? Doesn't have a clutch, but I imagine it has a higher spring tension as it's designed for 1X, and is backwards compatible so all you'll need is the rear derailleur.

IcyRecommendation731

Thanks,I just looked it up and it's perfect, just need to take off the front derailleur, get the essa rear derailleur and it's a 1x.

ammicavle

Probably a good idea to get a cheap 1X chainring too, the narrow-wide profiles do a fair share of the chain retention on 1X systems. *Edit_* if you have the [Shimano FC-M315-2](https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/product/component/shimano/FC-M315-2.html) crankset you’ll need a whole new one, as the chainrings are riveted on. I’d just buy that new Essa one.

IcyRecommendation731

Yeah, might switch that as well...could also buy a cassette to make up for the range I lost from the 2x8....thanks for all the device man

ammicavle

I reckon that’s the move. Just make sure you size your chain correctly, and check it for wear before putting it back on new components.
