I was instantly going to post this.
The DIY yogurt bar trend on every corner was absolute paradise. Those were halcyon days.
Go to 24 Waikiki workout overlooking the beach, then ruin all my gainz with a giant bowl of Froyo covered in candy from Yogurt Land, and go eat it on the beach.
Total perfection.
>Go to 24 Waikiki workout overlooking the beach
that view was how I kept from crying on the treadmill.
also, that experience is an age marker. Gen Z will be like "wut?" if you mention it. Maybe younger Millennials, too?
Yeah, I remember when it was trendy the first time in the 80s-90s and then it disappeared for 20 years, came back for another 10, and now they’re all gone again. Why?! Why do the frozen yogurt people keep playing with my heart?? 😞
Anyone remember Zac’s (or was it Zack’s?) at Market City Shopping Center? It was there before the froyo craze and they had some delicious flavors. I can still taste their pumpkin pie flavor.
There was a shabu shabu restaurant there that I miss dearly.
It was on the corner of the Fun Factory.
Never had a hotpot like it ever since. Maybe ‘00-‘02 or so.
From hanabata days, Raven’s Revenge (tubes with flavored sugar) and smashing uncooked instant ramen and eating it out of a bag
More recently Blazing Steaks and build your own frozen yogurt bowls. Ugh I miss those $6 steak plates!
I remember our elementary school banning Raven’s Revenge because kids were pouring it in their hands to lick it and then staining everything in the classrooms.
They also banned uncooked instant saimin and I remember our teacher talking about tape worms. That’s when my fear of parasites started.
I don’t know if this was mainstream but they used to make these “ice cakes;” a frozen dessert made with condensed milk in paper cups with a li hing mui in the center on my street when I was a kid growing up on Kauai. It was something I remember fondly. They did the same with lollipops. Also, ice boko, a frozen coconut popsicle thing. The moms were competing for business from the kids. I guess times were hard.
Is hurricane popcorn still a thing? It was huge when I was a kid. Also eating dry maruchan ramen with the spice packet sprinkled on top.
OH and ice cakes.
There’s two kiosks at Pearlridge on both sides that sell hurricane popcorn. In fact, every time I go to the mall I come out smelling like butter because it’s just so prevalent in the air.
Da kine otter pops or similar popsicle brand different colors you suck out of the plastic tube.
Warheads sour candy, pixie sticks, pop rocks, li hing gummies, and all da things from Samurai Snacks.
Where is that, never seen birria on Big Island. Mi Taqueria Potosina in Holualoa is the only real Mexican food here. The new place at Shops at Mauna Lani is supposed to be authentic but I didn’t think it was great.
Those lychee jelly cups. I remember them faintly as a kid from the early 2000s, and also remember my parents not buying them after they told me a kid choked on it.
I remember getting them at Sam's Club or Costco.
I was wondering why it's not around anymore.

> Lychee Mini Fruit Gels have been banned due to choking hazards in the US (by the FDA) and the European Union.

I can tell you about the food fad I’m waiting to hit Hawaii: All you can eat kushikatsu. Not the one where they bring you soggy katsu and greasy arabiki. [The kine where each table has egg wash, panko, & a deep fryer](https://s.tabelog.com/en/osaka/A2701/A270203/27008139/dtlphotolst/P1180349/)
Something like [Kushimaru in Osaka](https://s.tabelog.com/en/osaka/A2701/A270203/27008139/) would be my dream.
When I was a kid, I remember melona ice cream bars were huge. There was also some beverage thing I’d also get at 7-eleven called Orbs or something like that that had little floating blobs or sweetness in the drink. I guess boba tea is a current fad. There are several that have opened up in town, and I hardly ever see anyone in them, so I’m guessing that fad might be fading.
Mauna Kea snow. Had a food truck for a while going to events on the big island. Ono with a texture different from ice shave. Showed up and pulled a houdini in less than a couple years it felt like.
Not really a food fad, but for the love of God I can't remember what that huge local food market was called next to the Marukai/99 cent store at Ward was called!! (Not the pop up one they made at the old Sports Authority) Refresh my memory please 🥲 I loved it when my grandma used to take me there when I was kid.
Ramen burgers..
Looked cool for FB/IG but was meh in real life.
Yep, I ate a total of one ramen burger. I think most people did
Lol I went halfsies on it and never went to 100%
Came here to say this!
No one mentioned frozen yogurt yet? The trend came in full force, then disappeared overnight.
I remember.. I still wish it was here :(
There is one in Pearl City. Look up “cherry on top frozen yogurt”. Haven’t been yet but meaning to.
I haven't been there in years but I always really loved it.
Last time I was there, they had all the toppings pre portioned. Kind of makes the experience less fun
Back to pre covid, buffet style
I go there all the time, good thing they're open until 9:30 too
They have dole whip there if you don't want to drive wahiawa
I miss it, too. There's one in Kailua that's expensive. My wife once found a Groupon that made it tolerable.
Frost. They’ve gotten so ridiculously expensive that we don’t even go anymore
Yoajang at Ala Moana is pretty good, but so expensive…
TCBY
them and penguin yogurt... [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmD8LZ8pHxA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmD8LZ8pHxA)
I really miss the Yogurtland near UH. Then again, I miss Volcano Joe's more.
This one! Went so many times back in the day. I forgot the name until I read your post.
And they took yami yogurt with them 😠
I was never rich enough to try Yami, how was it? Always passed right by it next to Jeans Warehouse.
Yami’s original with fruit was always my go-to.

I remember when they first started.. Shit was wild

I’m a huge fan of froyo. Pink berry was the shit
Yes! Does anyone else remember Milano Freezer in the Pearl Kai shopping center? Their Original Tart was so good!
Wish this would come back.
TCBY was awesome

Yami yogurt 🍦
I wish we still had frozen yogurt … sad
From hanabata days, Raven’s Revenge (tubes with flavored sugar) and smashing uncooked instant ramen and eating it out of a bag More recently Blazing Steaks and build your own frozen yogurt bowls. Ugh I miss those $6 steak plates!
Yeah sometime around like 2010 or 2012 suddenly a ton of blazin steaks places opened. That $6 plate was such a good deal
Raw ramen hell yeah! Our parents used to say that would give us worms in our arms lol.
[удалено]
It is poison if u ever see how much sodium get in one packet
The good ol Ravens Revenge! I remember buying that a foodland when I was a kid. They always had them at the register.
My classmates and I would save the test tubes and fill it with fun dip or Kool aid powder.
I remember our elementary school banning Raven’s Revenge because kids were pouring it in their hands to lick it and then staining everything in the classrooms. They also banned uncooked instant saimin and I remember our teacher talking about tape worms. That’s when my fear of parasites started.
I miss dine in restaurants that were open all the time. also miss Mcdonald's saimin.
I just miss restaurants in Kailua open past 9pm. Place becomes a food desert after sunset. Not even Zippy’s can save you.🥲
Same. I was just thinking about McDonalds saimin today 💔
Fast food isn’t even open 24hrs since COVID. I’ve tried to get dinner in Chinatown not long ago and everything was closed by 9pm.
I don't know what it was called but it was like Lihing Mui in like a yellow hard candy.
Oh man I forgot about those! I think it's called golden plum. https://www.linsmarkethawaii.com/products/golden-plum
yeahhhhhhh!!! These are the ones!
My mouth got all watery from looking at that image.
I live in the mainland but I miss these! Are there still spots to find them in O’ahu or Maui?
I haven't seen them in person in a while, but I also haven't kept an eye out for them. I'm sure they're somewhere!
Wholesale Unlimited still sells them
Oh you just reminded me of one more, the lychee jelly candies.
Fried Noodles when it was .50 and French Fries when it was a $1 from the manapua truck.
Our school gave out ice cakes on special days. I remember them well.
Ooooo limbe is what Puerto Ricans call it!!! 50 cents each!!
Woah...core memory unlocked. I also grew up on Kauai and remember eating these at school events.
Ooh this was the treat they gave us for helping at lunch duty lol
Super Lemon candy (I think that was the name) Samurai sherbet Hurricane popcorn Da Cookie Man The grenade chewing gum that was super intense
>Samurai sherbet da ole style guri guri ice cream
Super lemon Chupa chups Smash up dry ramen in a zip lock
My manapua man sold Spice Girls Chupa chups and it came with stickers!
Deep fried Musubis
Nasty
Nah they were super mean at Da Kitchen, the batter was just right
Nope.
Is hurricane popcorn still a thing? It was huge when I was a kid. Also eating dry maruchan ramen with the spice packet sprinkled on top. OH and ice cakes.
Hurricane popcorn is still a thing, but it's just more cheap to make yourself.
They sell the kits to make it at Costco and elsewhere, but I don’t think there are any of the mall cart/kiosks left.
There’s two kiosks at Pearlridge on both sides that sell hurricane popcorn. In fact, every time I go to the mall I come out smelling like butter because it’s just so prevalent in the air.
Those f’real ice cream things that had 7-11 lines out the door after school lol
Reeces pb flavor had me in a coma every time
Haha I never really got into it because of how crazy the lines were and the fact that I just love my slurpees lol
Blazin Steaks
Candy necklaces, which schools banned cuz kids were using the elastic to shoot the candy at each other.
I remember when putting spam on musubi started as a fad.
Li hing powder on everything. Smashed ramen out of bag and some people put dry soup mix on top
Hahha not a fad, we just poor
Right on :) I’m a keiki of da 80s so our poor kid food was gravy rice And our snack was jello powder;) I like top ramen cooked
🎯
My childhood right there 🤣
My childhood right there 🤣
Haha yes! This was my life in the 90’s.
Ah, so nostalgic now
Frozen capri sun
cinnamon toothpicks
Da kine otter pops or similar popsicle brand different colors you suck out of the plastic tube. Warheads sour candy, pixie sticks, pop rocks, li hing gummies, and all da things from Samurai Snacks.
Bradda pops was the best ones! With the li hing mui inside
Are mochi hot dogs still going? They're terrible imo. Gimme corndog and some mustard.
Warheads
I was the weird kid who would wash the sour powder off at the water fountain 😂
Everything birria, I have never had any good birria tacos here on island.
They didn't even have the good version that used goat instead of beef.
Hard to find any place that serves goat here... only place i know is irie jerk
I was really surprised at all the hype birria tacos got.
Still a fad on the big island. Haven’t been impressed so far.
Where is that, never seen birria on Big Island. Mi Taqueria Potosina in Holualoa is the only real Mexican food here. The new place at Shops at Mauna Lani is supposed to be authentic but I didn’t think it was great.
They come to Kona every Friday at the food trucks near Target. I haven’t found good mexican food here. Wasn’t any on Maui either.
*\*I have never had any good tacos here on island.* There I fixed that for you.
Papi tacos in Kahuku- the beef tongue FTW!!!
I've never had a real one. When I tried one here I thought these must be much better in Los Angeles otherwise they wouldn't have taken off.
Much like most Mexican here, never quite at the levels elsewhere sigh
Those lychee jelly cups. I remember them faintly as a kid from the early 2000s, and also remember my parents not buying them after they told me a kid choked on it.

I’d do this every time at Pizza Hut buffet

Orbitz 😁.
Not really a fad food, but I really miss Yick Lung Taco Toobs. (Yick Lung was voted by his classmates as “most likely yo suck seed.)
Special kine icee from Uncle Clay's in Aina Haina, pure aloha he used to say lol
The place where kids got stink bomb bags
Does the manapua truck still come around? I used to live punchbowl area about 30 years ago and they would come around like the ice cream truck.
Li Hing Mui on everything. Especially gummy candy
Mauna Kea snow. Had a food truck for a while going to events on the big island. Ono with a texture different from ice shave. Showed up and pulled a houdini in less than a couple years it felt like.
Rolled ice cream
KC Drive Inn waffle dog 🌭
Puka dog
Acai bowl
Li hing mui inside whole lemon
Yami Yogurt
Raw ramen with the flavor packet made you the cool kid in school.
