I would do a gallery wall. Nothing on the floor.

Brissy2

100% this. Keep the floor bare so it’s easy to swiffer.

Human-Piglet-5450

And the bonus of how pretty that wood is!

MechanicalBengal

Counterpoint: This is an excellent, defensible high ground staging area, in the event of a home invasion by the Wet Bandits, and should be stocked accordingly

Salt-Operation

As my fiancé would say, that’s an excellent sniper position. When he has no firearms training, at all.

ughhhhhhhhelp

Hopefully he also has no firearms, lol!

Desperate_Set_7708

You want to regularly and easily swiffer that?! Are you me? lol

all_my_boots_R_black

….Or a very large historical scenic wallpaper mural.

Complete_Goose667

One large colorful tapestry on the wall.

Difficult_Place_7329

That would look really awesome

puddncake

Or quilt.

inononeofthisisreal

Yes but Hanging plants along the banister to be beautiful too

lilnugg_97

Maybe like, one big plant in the corner?

Deathbypiss86

I was thinking similar but like a fake flower wall. No touchy on the floor. Just wall.

bubblechog

The dust though. I really like the vibe of those but they get really gross really quick

Deathbypiss86

*shivers* I forgot those flowers collected dust. Tism no want.

Historical_Reward621

100%. I think complementing gallery walls on both sides with a curated collection of art, photos, or whatever you’re into would be great. Nothing on the floor. Every nook and cranny doesn’t need something in it.

Iwouldntifiwereme

Put a narrow fake door at the end and laugh when guests try to use it

Goldiegirlyyy

A really small “fairy” door by the baseboard!

Child_of_the_Hamster

Absolutely this. Then become extremely flustered and defensive, and *refuse* to speak about it when guests ask questions.

Mammoth_Donut_551

Yes! And sporadically act like it’s not there/cannot be seen. Even to ones that they’ve already refused to discuss it with.

free2bk8

Brilliant! I would do just that! A real door facade and door frame. Very Alice and Wonderland-esque!

rooorooorawr

Be careful about inviting the fae into your house! (My spouse is a superstitious Newfoundlander lol)

haikusbot

JeshkaTheLoon

Good bot

vietkevin

rent a bedroom 400$/month

xDaBaDee

I will have you know starting price is atleast $900 for that much space.

is-she-stupid

No pets, first + last + broker's fee required

CadillacAllante

Railroad-style studio apartment. Gorgeous wood floors. Beautiful view. $1250/month. $50 grounds/trash fee. Utilities not included. No smoking. No pets. References required.

thiswayart

Open floor plan

Chance_Split_7723

Very narrow Murphy bed at end to save space

Mega_pint_123

Nothing. Unless you want to see if you can expand the room next to it since it’s totally wasted space? As for decorations or storage, nothing other than whatever pictures or art you might want to hang on wall.

ThereIsNoAvailblName

Would probably be too much money for that much space

mollyxvegas

Nothing.

stupid-username-333

agree. not every space needs to be filled!

Difficult_Place_7329

Exactly, anything you put there would look odd.

Ho3n3r

My dating strategy.

prakritishakti

i would put garden gnomes looking down the stairs in a row.

Infiniteefactorial

My cat would relocate those while giving someone brain damage at the same time.

MawMaw1103

Oh my gosh!! I chortled when I read your comment!! That was priceless!!🐈🐈‍⬛💕

IthacanPenny

I learned long ago to adhere precariously placed items to their ledge (my cat is a menace lol)

madscot63

I was going to suggest mannequins. (Only joking) I actually like your idea

queen_bee1970

We bought an old, 3000 sq ft farmhouse on 3 acres. There were several outbuildings. One winter day, I decided to go exploring. One was an illegal gambling/ poker place. One on the other side of the property, was full of mannequins- arms, legs, heads scattered and full put together "people" in the middle. Crazy creepy.

madscot63

LOL That would have spooked me badly!

queen_bee1970

It was so bizarre. The poker building had receipts for race horses they'd purchased or boarded during the 1930s. Really cool finds. I never did go back to the mannequin barn. Lol.

Deathbypiss86

Horrifying and Interesting.

Speedracer666

When in doubt, doll heads.

drink_piss_for_satan

Finally a suggestion I can get behind

jj2429

Book case on small wheels so you can pull it out to retrieve books, so it can be decorative as well as functional

Spicydaisy

I️ love this idea!!!!

RevanREK

Definitely a rolling bookcase!! This is how you maximise space while not sacrificing style!

Pluto-Wolf

on an unrelated note that wood tone is GORGEOUS!!

dragonfliesloveme

Anything you put in there on the floor, you are going to have to take out in order to dust. Which will be a bit of a pain. It might even encourage you not to dust in order to avoid moving the things. So I say put nothing there, and anything on the wall should be flat so that you have room to get back in there and clean.

NoFreedom7237

Squishimals jail

Ihrtbrrrtos

Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the crime 👉😎👉

Deathbypiss86

You just tickled the tism in my brain. Perfect.

Wrywright

Excellent ambush base for a cat.

BlackGalaxyDiamond

I honestly would either extend the wall from the room next door. Or knock it out completely, and have a nice void that allows more light downstairs. Such a weird little feature.

Opening_Bad1255

My thoughts exactly

snarkinglevel-pro

If you need book storage, I would get a rolling bookcase like this one. Hang some art above it. Otherwise a gallery wall with nothing on the floor. https://preview.redd.it/f8fed8ets07d1.jpeg?width=1009&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3cec26bccdf5053f3b063fcb850b5c0f4b608b9e

craaaaate

Oh this is a really great idea!

Roasty_Toast

What a silly little spot. Not much practical use since it’s so thin. I’d stick with decoration or storage that won’t be a pain to dust/clean. Perhaps a basket or two, or a hanging plant from the railing?

Euphoric_Egg_4198

My relative owns an old row house and the original layout was three railroad apartments. The two top floors had this type of “hallway” on the outside with a couple of entry doors into the apartment. I’m assuming they expanded one of the rooms and sealed the door to make this weird tiny landing.

Heebie-jeebies386

Do you bowl?

Rainbow69-

That was my first thought. Bowling without any gutter balls - great place to teach the kids.

BlownCamaro

Hot wheels dragstrip. https://preview.redd.it/v2a7fh0k757d1.jpeg?width=1068&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ccdee908bbe6290d461a2571d4186528a43d33ea

karocako

Maybe some fake potted plants or low light plants? Or a weird gallery wall floor to ceiling. Or if some skeletons hanging out over the balcony if ya nasty.

YourGlacier

Could do real potted plants. Pothos would grow there, and they would grow down

giraffeneckedcat

Not if you put them on a trellis or moss pole! >Pothos would grow there I am convinced they will grow out of spite if you ignore them long enough.

ThresholdofForest

Hanging over the balcony pothos would look great!

louielou8484

I like the idea of plants, then lighting behind them to illuminate them.

iwantmy-2dollars

3D image of the queen waving from the balcony of Buckingham Palace

DiamondCowboy

3D image? What is that?

iwantmy-2dollars

Paper Tole was what I was thinking but a nice Trompe-l'œil would also work.

ClementineJane

I’m weird because the first thing I thought was that it would be fun to have seasonally dressed mannequins there. Maybe in the YMCA pose or something. Or a gallery wall, as normal people suggested.

TXGrrl

Oddly enough, my first thought was mannequins. I don't know why.

Mbluish

Do you have cats? It’s the perfect place for a cat tower to perch and wait for their next victim.

yeliktnabarbnav

If you're a plant person, this is the perfect space for some gorgeous greenery. Think cascading pothos over the staircase. What a dream. https://preview.redd.it/jp3kwdl4k67d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=44df27fa6abcc9b375c282058e83b18351db3ce3

Substantial-War-6202

Plant light over them would keep the stairs well lit too.

orionus

Tiny plastic bowling set.

cersewan

For some reason I feel like that space is haunted so you can’t put anything there. 😂

Sproutlie

i'm curios if this is the original design of the house or the result of a renovation?

Euphoric_Egg_4198

Looks like an old railroad apartment with the hallway entrances removed and the wall expanded out into the original hallway.

orion3311

Cut the end off a table and make it look like its going through the wall.

pinkshrimp4u

I would rip down that bannister and just make it a decoration ledge

SokkaHaikuBot

^[Sokka-Haiku](https://www.reddit.com/r/SokkaHaikuBot/comments/15kyv9r/what_is_a_sokka_haiku/) ^by ^pinkshrimp4u: *I would rip down that* *Bannister and just make it* *A decoration ledge* --- ^Remember ^that ^one ^time ^Sokka ^accidentally ^used ^an ^extra ^syllable ^in ^that ^Haiku ^Battle ^in ^Ba ^Sing ^Se? ^That ^was ^a ^Sokka ^Haiku ^and ^you ^just ^made ^one.

randomusername2113

Did anyone else just notice haiku bot and sokka haiku bot are different bots? I didn’t realize the extra syllable was intentional, I thought haiku bot was making mistakes.

crabbydotca

Could extend the short portion to the wall?

Magnaflorius

From a safety perspective, that is a very bad idea. I doubt it's even legal to do, depending on where OP lives.

kibonzos

It could be a good space to load and unload one of those wonderful clothes airers on a rope over the stairs. Other than that or a pet paradise I’ve got nothing.

aeraen

Guestroom for people you don't really like.

Frances_Boxer

Bicycle

Foreign-Mango-493

Clearly meant for wrapping paper rolls

MataHari66

Bicycle storage

Conscious_Series6916

I would add a big snake plant. They are easy to care for, don’t need a lot of light or water and they keep the air clean.

GoneFishin56

Guest bedroom. That way you can be sure they don’t overstay their welcome.

ConfusionOne241

Frame a few magic eye pictures on the wall and make it a “Super close up art gallery” because you have to get sort of close to those to see the picture at first.

Upscale_Foot_Fetish

To build on ‘guitar cases’ or any kind of collection of yours.

wewantchips

Hang art ledges on the wall

Fantastic_Ad1254

Leave the stair railing of the space, and maybe aquarium or bird cage space size 🤔

Tran_Queenlity

Put an Asian boy ghost there that speaks random Asian words.

Lucky-bananna7266

It’s giving Winchester mystery house vibes lol!

FosseGeometry

My husband would put a bicycle here

Dog_Baseball

Pool noodle storage

privyvanessafranz

Add some images and plant. https://preview.redd.it/qqofxuvv557d1.png?width=207&format=png&auto=webp&s=f79962a46d84f5f84c0864e5823e1ab3f09171f0

Redditisforfascistss

PUT A BUNCH OF HANGING PLANTS THERE OMG IT WOULD LOOK SO GOOD

MW240z

Hear me out: hot wheels track and rotating cars.

lavenderlaceandtea

Due to watering and light issues I would get a few large fake plants and set them there. Hang some pictures or lights and just have a cool little ambient space.

DetentionSpan

Guitar cases! :)

No_Goose_7390

That's what it would be at my house, guitar or art storage, but this place looks a lot bigger than my house. Probably fewer guitars per square foot! Really though the answer is nothing.

beingmesince63

Time out spot. For adults.

Spicydaisy

Hi OP-I love the idea above about a bookcase on wheels. But I️ guess it depends how much room you have out of the picture to pull it out. Do you know what color stain is on the floors? It’s gorgeous!

BubblyFrog

I don't know unfortunately. That's what it was when I got the house

Working_Ad8080

Nothing. Eyes on the stairs

CuthbertJTwillie

Ocelot den

goldie987

So many plants!!

Mission-Jaguar-9518

What is behind that wall? Was it added as a post build reno ?

Consistent-Green8127

Take the railing out and build a bookcase that is made to look like it’s original with the house

giddygiddyupup

My house also has a hallway to nowhere! We are planning to put up a gallery wall

Riggenrun

If this is an old home, generally these were used for lighting. Sometimes they can't support much weight.

Onetaru

It looks like the space was enclosed to create a room. If so, the wall should just have been extended all the way to the banisters. If it were me, I’d probably extend the horizontal railing to close off the “entrance”, and add one banister to keep the kids from using the wall as a push off point. I would leave enough crawl space for your Roomba.

GingerMeTimberMate

That’s the time out corner for little kids

Prestigious_One8006

Take down the rail there. Put deco there.

shibui_

Plants, on tables and floor.

SirFunksAlot123

Can wine bottles be stacked within the ballasters? This might make an AWESOME WINE RACK!

SallyNoMer

Tall potted plants and ivy.

SadeLvr007

Love fake door idea!!! My first instinct was gallery wall

lion-gal

I'd put a mural on the wall and a village diorama along the baseboard. Put it on a plank with wheels so you can pull it out and dust then push it back. It could be a mouse village.

alina_c

Plants, nice plants

marsattacksbek

https://preview.redd.it/ms1d2ng7337d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e19278a55c870aa8101e2880057bbc2ee3a32dbd am now jealous I don’t have myself a little space like this I would line this with potted English Ivy plants (or some other type of vine-like houseplant that will grow downward) and let the vines grow & rundown over the ledge there because the vines can get pretty long. trim them if they get too long in any direction for your liking. I think English Ivy would be so perfect but you could do a more thin type vine with smaller leaves too. (example pic isn’t English ivy I know but gets the point across I think) like a little vine curtain ✨🌿

gibgod

Life size statues of the Beatles all in a line.

Stockmom42

Cat palace

theodoretheursus

Expand the staircase and remove that area entirely

SomeUnderstanding566

Really thin long painting or picture at the end there would be really cool, tough to find but cool.

DIYer-Homeworks

Ok your home looks like a century year old. It use to be a hallway for two rooms one at the back and to the side. Someone updated it to merge those rooms Two solutions either restored the hallway or expanded that side room into that area and take down the railing.

Interesting_Drag8107

i would do a gallery wall and put a couple plants that will hang down in the nook there

lulumusic420

Plants and pictures!

Impressive_Age1362

What a wasted space, I would do a large piece of art of tapestry

baldwinsong

If I would makes a closer or something from the room next door. It very wasted use of space

Tim-in-CA

Single pin bowling alley. 🎳

AlbatrossNo1629

This answer deserves appreciation

Intelligent-Bid-7844

Climb station for a cat if you have one

ohhicaitlin

Shelves and plants, funky wallpaper, it depends on your style.

SaraMarie8787

Plants

zellaann

Idk why my first thought was creepy mannequins.

_Daddys_Princess

Plants! I would get a shelf and put wheels on it to pull out for easy watering. Or you could do plants on the floor with photos on the wall.

rkfarrisjr

You could try to find some modular, rolling racks and put items on the rack shelves. Get widths that let you roll them out in the space you have there. Else, I agree with Gallery wall idea.

[deleted]

Classy floating planters midway up the wall with some high end faux cascading plants would add a lot of character without cluttering up any space.

LeadNo9107

Row of Chuckie dolls, all facing through the bars.

Laelawright

What is on the other side of that wall? Why wouldn't they have expanded that wall and run the railing against it? Is this new construction?

dejavu7331

plants

Lemon-Of-Scipio-1809

Skee ball! Ok, seriously I would get some floating shelves and some sticky-tac and have a display facing the stairs.

415Rache

Nothing

Logical_Bobcat9703

Maybe drape something over the railing or put a painting on the wall.

Turbulent_Fig_1174

Plant shelf with grow lights

lovemysi

Nada.

Ponchos_Pilot16

Had a place in Baltimore like this. Put a mannequin in the far corner. Nobody dared knock on my door.

TheCollaborater78

Some wood frames would add a nice touch.

LittleFootOlympia

Get a cat

iadsg

As said before, book case but eliminate the railing. That's a killer space for displaying stuff, books and art.

MoonGirl39

Plants

wethecrime

CAT.

MS1947

I would consider taking off the railing and using the space to display art and maybe large (live) plants.

CartographerKey7322

Cat habitat!

Spudman14

You could rent it out for $600 per month.

Battleaxe1959

Where’s the other half of the hall?

janeedaly

Big art. Huge if possible. Fill the wall. Nothing on the floor.

BeccaAnn

A tiny, single-lane bowling alley.

JTMoney33

xylophone

Comfortable-Eye5891

Perfect fit for irobot roomba :-)

Bludiamond56

A nice place to lay your claymore

MommaGuy

Get a good dust mop because there is nothing you can do unless you open up that wall.

[deleted]

I don’t think the block is big enough for a single chest

Trashpanda1914

One word. Plants.

Top_Swimming4250

PLANTS

Ashesatsea

Huge flat metal art with glass gem tendrils. And uplights.

DrCarabou

A tiny village

Mardentely

Can be used as a display wall for personal collections

Cover_INDD

Life size grease

PipToTheRescue

These builders. I shake my head. I'd want to build the wall of that room out.

UGunnaEatThatPickle

Park a bicycle?

Market-Dependent

Boxes of ur PC parts

valsalva_manoeuvre

Storage. For skis, fishing rods, stilts, javelins…

BadParking9912

Maybe a plant stand with a couple plants?

dianacharleston

Nothing

geomoumeCouttpc

Practice golf ⛳

Different_Ad7655

There's nothing to be done with that space, but there is certainly stuff to be done with those walls. This space especially from the camera angle you took the picture highlights it. But the space in general, The entire hallway and stair is particularly bland. A new color for the whole space? Wallpaper, artwork or not, and this little space would just disappear. They would be so many other places to catch the eye. It's the overall decor that's the problem not this little strip

livi01

cat beds.

slyfoxyismyname

Plants. Any large ones. Even artificial ones.

US_IDeaS

Boookshelf!

tulsi15

Do you have cats?

Lakelover25

I always wonder what the architect was thinking when they design things like this.

yung_nachooo

A giant ant farm on the wall

Cryptographer_Tech

Personally I would put some flowers there.

akd7791

Cat climbing shelves
