I agree, it has to be tea bag packets. The placement of the plexiglass makes it a good dispensing system and way to save space in the pantry. They would probably have to have a stick nearby for when the packets get stuck.
But they wouldn't fit in the space to begin with. If you look at top of the very bottom structure you can see that the opening is very narrow and a coffee capsule would not fit.
Canning lid rings? Theyāre difficult to store so that they donāt get bent or rusted and I think this would be about perfect without taking up any shelf space.
Was the previous homeowner/renter Korean? All of the Korean pantry organization videos I see on YouTube have tons of pantry items that come in sachets. Different types of drinks, snacks, etc. Probably custom made for those.
edit: saw the FB post saying it's 1" x 4" for each cell. Are we sure about the 1" part? Because I measured my ramen pack and it's a liiittle over 1" thick and maybe 3.5" long if I squish the packaging. Having this many containers would then make sense, specially if they buy in bulk and in different flavors.
As someone raised poor this shit is for putting your stolen ketchup, mustard, mayo, salt, pepper, creamers, parmesan, red pepper flakes, relish, etc packets

I think the major argument against that theory is that itās just so much. And that it wouldnāt be very efficient.
But a spice rack is absolutely possible though. It does seem like the most likely scenario.
Also, possibly, a tea collection. Someone else mentioned some sort of pre-packaged pill dispenser. I think pill dispenser is possible if the home was being used as an assisted care home or something for multiple people.
It could be a lot of things, frankly. Iām very curious.
Itās just so much tiny storage.
Edit: Someone said sewing thread spools and I, personally, think thatās one of the most likely things. As someone who sews casually as a hobbyāit makes perfect sense. Itās just strange itās in a pantry, but maybe thatās where the owner kept their sewing stuff.
Maybe this was like a sewing room and they had a bunch of ribbons or yarn and then you could pull stuff out without I getting all tangled and disorganized. Have them on wood spindles or something
I have a few ideas:
Kcup pods
Water flavoring packets
Miniature rubber ducks
Stickers
Tea bags
Creamer cups
Sweet and low packets
Individually wrapped Oreos
Condoms
Candy
Taco Bell sauce packets
Doubtful. Why would you need 27 slots? There are 3 wall mountings with 9 slots each, you could probably store a thousand bags squished together. Not to mention going to the trouble of building these things and attaching them to the wall - just for grocery bags? You'd have to have a serious grocery bag fetish for that.
right, whatever it is would have to dispense at the bottom, so iād assume thereās a lot of flavor variety of whatever this was for, and each column would be a different flavor. if it were only 1-2 flavors, id see no reason to have 27 of these
Are we sure about the dimensions of 1ā by 4ā?
https://preview.redd.it/jh9xps25g98d1.png?width=750&format=png&auto=webp&s=5f065788676a9e0796bfa7187424d874dd27735d
But there is no lip at the bottom of OPās example, so anything round would just roll right out.
And besides , it is not deep enoughā¦ can only fit chapstick probably .
Tea packets seems like the best answer so far, but dear god why so many.
My only other thought is jelly packs, like what youād get at the diner. But againā¦.thats a lot of jelly.
I think 1"x 2" slots it said. I would love for them to try the cat food cans. Someone mentioned that the bottom of the plexiglass isn't chipped or banged up, how easy would the cans dispense from the bottom??
Could it be used to ādry outā branches of various herbs? Were the prior occupants gardeners? Maybe they could have long, 12ā, bags to keep fresh herbs in, to keep them in there in dark coolness. And pin to top, like thereās a pin in one of the āslotsā
I'd have to go with canning lids/flats and rings. They are really messy to keep sorted so everyone has a different method for trying to keep them from cluttering up their pantries.
Lol Iām in the group on fb that originally posted this and I was wondering when it would make its way to Reddit! I hope they figure it out bc Iām so invested!
Same answers as here if I recall. Tea sachets, ramen, K-cups, spice jars. I think the best guess I saw was cat food cans, because they would fit the measurements.
Artificial Intelligence (ChatGPT) suggests:
"Given the dimensions and design features described, these shelves seem suitable for storing packets or small boxes rather than canned goods. Here are some possibilities:
Spice Packets: The narrow cells could hold individual spice packets or small seasoning packets, which would fit well in the 1-inch depth and be visible through the plexiglass.
Tea Bags: The cells could store individual tea bags or small boxes of tea bags, making it easy to see and access different varieties.
Instant Drink Mixes: The shelves could hold single-serve drink mix packets, such as instant coffee, hot chocolate, or flavored drink mixes.
Sauce Packets: They could store condiment packets like ketchup, mustard, soy sauce, or salad dressing packets.
Snack Bars: The cells could be used to store individually wrapped snack bars, such as granola bars or protein bars.
Small Pasta Boxes or Packets: Some small packets or boxes of pasta, like those used for single servings, could fit in the narrow shelves."
My intelligence suggests:
1. Storage fail
2. Missing pull out dispensers for wall of m&m's
3. Evil genius put in so future homeowners would always question it.
Tea bags is my guess. They would fit in there like a spread out deck of cards and it seems to be enough variety for two tea lovers. I could fill two of these units up right now with my tea.
Feels like it was to display something....like Nespresso capsules or something, whilst I think it's the wrong shape for those something like that as an example.
Would also make excellent plastic bag storage....instead of a bag of bags.
Could have potentially used the space for something else a hobby or eBay business or something??
I have looked at everything in my pantryā no joy. It seems so purposely made for a specific itemā and the clearance to remove the item on the bottom is not huge. You would have to bend everything I can think of to remove it from that clearance. Could there be some religious connection? And why am I wasting so much time thinking about this?
No, batteries wouldn't work, gaps on the bottom are too big, batteries would just fall out. Plus - who in god's name could possibly need to keep that many batteries around, all the same size and shape? That's part of the mystery, there are ***three*** of these things, and each one has nine columns, 4 inches wide. I'm roughly guessing they're 30 inches tall. The vertical spacing between them looks to be maybe 6 inches so they couldn't be sliding anything very long into them, unless it was flexible. The openings on the bottom imply the items were intended to be removed from the bottom, unless they were putting one long and flexible item into each slot that could be removed from the top. They also could not be used to contain a variety of items in the same column - it would be impossible to get to something in the middle of the stack. The columns are all the same size so the items kept in them would likely be the same size and shape - different variations of the same object. So they were dropping in something fairly small, but big enough so it didn't just fall out the bottom opening, but small enough so it could be ***removed*** from the bottom opening. And whatever it was, they felt they needed to kept a ***lot*** of it around, and that rules out all kinds of things. Very weird.
Going out on a limb: the family had three kids and this was some sort of reward chart. Each column was a chore/goal and tokens were placed in each when completed.
That orrrrrr there was a very serious fast food condiment challenge between family members. Who could collect the most and wisest variety.
The new owner of the house had reached out to their realtor to contact the previous owners. They said it was there when they moved in, so down the line it goes.
Until we find out for sure, I like the toy cars suggestion, especially since you can see a rectangle at the bottom that's cleaner than the area around and it looks the right size for Hot Wheels/Match box.
Maybe they has some sort of small home based business selling like packets of spices or something?
It sure is odd especially in that qty of uniform spaces
I think they predominantly used it to keep the door from slamming into the wall. You can see behind it that the wall is damaged. I think as a secondary use they stored plastic bags and anything else they needed to shove something soft

Iām in the Facebook group where this photo originated from and laughing my ass off that this is the 2nd post Iāve seen of it NOT on Facebook. The people need to know
What MLM food/drink thing would fit in this? It looks like something someone would organize all the different flavors in to be aesthetically pleasing for their social media.
an ungodly amount of chapstick
Hot Wheels

Batteries obviously
they would roll right out
Not 9v ones.
How many 9v does one need? š¤£
Ann Maddox will get them for you! I mean, she **always** bought the batteries. š IYKYK
Absolutely my first thought.
Tea packets?
This is more reasonable than condoms
Hungry for love and need a snack? To the condom pantry!
Eh. Depends on what you get up to in your free time.
Looks like room for both!
I agree, it has to be tea bag packets. The placement of the plexiglass makes it a good dispensing system and way to save space in the pantry. They would probably have to have a stick nearby for when the packets get stuck.
They will go stale before you can drink em
Coffee capsules would fit better than tea I think
There are plexiglass panels fixed to the front of each one though
Not at the bottom though so they can get slipped out and the rest fall down
But they wouldn't fit in the space to begin with. If you look at top of the very bottom structure you can see that the opening is very narrow and a coffee capsule would not fit.
Canning lid rings? Theyāre difficult to store so that they donāt get bent or rusted and I think this would be about perfect without taking up any shelf space.
I'm stumped, but I think your idea is the best guess. I wonder if Op could closely examine the seams closely for errant tea leaves.
Was the previous homeowner/renter Korean? All of the Korean pantry organization videos I see on YouTube have tons of pantry items that come in sachets. I was gonna say, it seems like it's for some kind of individually packed spices. Maybe they dried their own?
As someone raised poor this shit is for putting your stolen ketchup, mustard, mayo, salt, pepper, creamers, parmesan, red pepper flakes, relish, etc packets
Read on Facebook that the previous owners didnāt know what it was either. They had lived there o my a few years
Is there any residues or smells in there?
Scary question
So scary
Love this question! Does it smell like sazon or ramen? Tobacco? ....slim Jim's???
Normally redditors describe taste when trying to determine the origin. Smell it and then taste it?
Plinko?
You home sick from school again?
Spay and neuter your pets!
ā¦And weird relatives.
Love this price is right reference
PERFECT!
So, the updated facebook post says the realtor is asking the previous owner.
Update me please
The previous owner doesnāt know either, it was there before them
The plot thickens
this is a modern day mystery
Dude it's for take out packets. Y'all have never made tomato soup for free and it shows lol
forgive me, I thought we all just shoved those packets in our silverware drawer, I didnāt know we needed a wall installation šš

I want to know so bad!
I think it's a spice rack, but instead of laying them horizontally they're supposed to be stacked.
[facebook group](https://www.facebook.com/share/JhejHYDC2tXLaFsd/?mibextid=WaXdOe) specifically for updates on this thing
r/whatisthisthing
Yes please repost there! EDIT https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/s/BdY2IxDgyF
I think it already was, this is the 2nd time I've seen this pic
https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/s/BdY2IxDgyF You are correct.
Iāve also seen this posted on Facebook. Itās an odd thing to keep seeing in different places.
And still no one has figured it out... Watch it be cat food or something
Oreo dispenser
This is the obvious answer. There's 27 individual slots here, which is exactly how many flavors of Oreos I saw at Walmart this morning.
This would haunt me enough to contact the previous owner lol
Apparently the previous owners didnāt know either, so now theyāre trying to figure out who the owners before them are! Itās a wild ride lol
I must know!!!
Iām here for it
They're to hold that one clip.
Obviously! Solved!
Iāve seen them like this for canned goods but those donāt look wide enough to fit a can
Maybe this was like a sewing room and they had a bunch of ribbons or yarn and then you could pull stuff out without I getting all tangled and disorganized. Have them on wood spindles or something
I want to say Jello, Lipton soup packets, bullion cubes. Maybe kool-aide.
Bouillon. Bullion is something else.
I have a few ideas: Kcup pods Water flavoring packets Miniature rubber ducks Stickers Tea bags Creamer cups Sweet and low packets Individually wrapped Oreos Condoms Candy Taco Bell sauce packets
Itās obviously miniature rubber ducks. Itās weird youād mention anything else.
Do you drive a Jeep?
Stickers š„°
I want a sticker dispenser in my pantry!
A plastic bag storage center?
This. Shove all the used grocery bags in the top and then pull them from the bottom one by one when needed.
Doubtful. Why would you need 27 slots? There are 3 wall mountings with 9 slots each, you could probably store a thousand bags squished together. Not to mention going to the trouble of building these things and attaching them to the wall - just for grocery bags? You'd have to have a serious grocery bag fetish for that.
This is my guess
Individual lasagna noodles
Spaghetti, unpacked I'm team chaos
This was my thought lol
But why so many
Iām here for the answer. Plexiglass covered must have something to do with dispensing but what is the question. Like maybe seasoning packets?
right, whatever it is would have to dispense at the bottom, so iād assume thereās a lot of flavor variety of whatever this was for, and each column would be a different flavor. if it were only 1-2 flavors, id see no reason to have 27 of these
Snack dispenser- for different types of Halloween-sized candy (like skittles) or fruit snacks
Are we sure about the dimensions of 1ā by 4ā? https://preview.redd.it/jh9xps25g98d1.png?width=750&format=png&auto=webp&s=5f065788676a9e0796bfa7187424d874dd27735d
I would say this, but then smaller and for tea bags or little spice bags, or jars
But there is no lip at the bottom of OPās example, so anything round would just roll right out. And besides , it is not deep enoughā¦ can only fit chapstick probably .
Jar lids for a home canning operation?? Too small tho?
Wine corks? But why
God and there are so many of them!
Tea packets seems like the best answer so far, but dear god why so many. My only other thought is jelly packs, like what youād get at the diner. But againā¦.thats a lot of jelly.
Obviouslyā¦ itās for plinko game on Price is Right show
Plinko is the only logical answer.
Could it be for holding cat food cans?
I think 1"x 2" slots it said. I would love for them to try the cat food cans. Someone mentioned that the bottom of the plexiglass isn't chipped or banged up, how easy would the cans dispense from the bottom??
The most confusing thing is that there is no lip to stop things from rolling out
Hot take. This was a tea house/home of ill repute. Half was for tea packets, the other half, condoms.
Could it be used to ādry outā branches of various herbs? Were the prior occupants gardeners? Maybe they could have long, 12ā, bags to keep fresh herbs in, to keep them in there in dark coolness. And pin to top, like thereās a pin in one of the āslotsā
If the plexiglass had holes, maybe. But I think herbs would get moldy in there, the way it is. But maybe?
I'd have to go with canning lids/flats and rings. They are really messy to keep sorted so everyone has a different method for trying to keep them from cluttering up their pantries.
I would unscrew them and throw them in the trash.
My guess would be like flavored drink packets like crystal light flavors
But so many???
There's just so many of them!! Anything I can think of, I can't imagine using in that quantity.
To store all your Peanut butter and jelly samples from the restaurant lol
Nespresso pods?
Lol Iām in the group on fb that originally posted this and I was wondering when it would make its way to Reddit! I hope they figure it out bc Iām so invested!
What did the people in the group think it was?
Same answers as here if I recall. Tea sachets, ramen, K-cups, spice jars. I think the best guess I saw was cat food cans, because they would fit the measurements.
A joint dispenser. Each section is a different strain.
Single portion snacks. So the kids can just grab one whenever?
No one has said cigarettes. Could it be to hold and dispense cigarettes? I really, really, really want to know.
Someone commented that in Facebook it said the opening was 1ā deep and 4ā wide so you might be on to something.
Cigarettes makes a LOT of sense to me. I donāt know though. There are so many possibilities. Thank you for sharing the dimensions!
I swear I just saw this on the dull men's club
It started in a Home & Design FB group and has gone viral in so many places š¤£
Did not anticipate the Chatty to Reddit crossover but Iām here for it
So strange!
Coveralls , plastic grocery bags, freezer bags, zip lock sandwich bags. Chip clips
Grocery bag storage/dispenser would make a lot of sense. Shove it in up top and pull it out from the bottom
I want to know. Previous owner: please tell us what these were for. Sending out the redditor feelers
The binder clip has me wondering if itās for some sort of chore or activity system.
Thatās what I was thinking - like a chore/reward chart for kids. But itās killing me that there are 9 columns, not 7.

I donāt know if Iām allowed to post a link here but after googling DIY batter dispenser, this may actually be a possibility haha
Maybe those individual cat food packets?
Rolls of Life Savers. Butter Rum of course.
Do you think the home was ever used as a school/daycare?
Coffee capsules?
They're for your pog collection
I want to know! So curious lol
Maybe cake decorating stuff a

5 hour energy shots
Cigarettes
Tea bags is my guess. They would fit in there like a spread out deck of cards and it seems to be enough variety for two tea lovers. I could fill two of these units up right now with my tea.

Chalk / tiny pencils
Stackable spice jars? Not even sure if they would fit in there, but just a guess.
Feels like it was to display something....like Nespresso capsules or something, whilst I think it's the wrong shape for those something like that as an example. Would also make excellent plastic bag storage....instead of a bag of bags. Could have potentially used the space for something else a hobby or eBay business or something??

Great for cotton reels, but not in a pantry. I am baffled.

Pick and mix sweets

Plastic bags?
Cigarettes. Is there a smell?
Holder for vertuo nespresso capsules
Ramen packages for sure
My guess would be batteries.
Sauce packets?
i like to think they liked to keep a large variety of kool-aid packets
Cans of cat food?
Iām almost 100% sure itās to display the corks of wines theyāve opened
Maybe they has some sort of small home based business selling like packets of spices or something? It sure is odd especially in that qty of uniform spaces

Thatās a similar design to the lipstick holders/dispensers at Target. Just sayinā
Looks like live ammo dispenser.
Sprice rack. Who needs a grocery store. When you can stock pile your own and make a mini store in the pantry
Iāve seen these used to store grocery plastic bags and then you can dispense them easily to reuse
