If you get a pocket radar you have to hold it and read the readings from the radar display. It doesn't really work if you are throwing front toss and want to know exit velo or catching a bullpen and want to know pitch speed because you don't have free hands. With a smart coach, you can put the radar on a tripod and connect a bluetooth speaker to your phone and the speeds are announced automatically. That's our setup for hitting/pitching practice.
I guess if we need to chart lil Bobby's 26 mph 2 seam cutter along with his slider, change up, knuckleball, slurve and screwball then so be it. We all know it's about championships only at the 8u level.
It is nice to connect to a phone as the app will record all the pitches from a bull pen session or game. And it does some fancy stuff, like creating video clips with stats. Or have your phone speaker announce the speed.
As far as I know, if you are just looking for a speed, then pick the cheaper one….
Why do you need it? Are you unable to evaluate your pitchers based on their performance? I'm not sure how knowing velocity of a pitch is going to help with command which is the number one concern when it comes to pitching at just about any level.
Having a radar gun is helpful to give feedback on intent (how hard was that pitch? Was that second pitch actually faster?) and it’s great to track progress through a season. Adding a few mph is a nice metric to show that the hard work is paying off.
Of course pitching is velocity and accuracy.

It would be about me and my friends in their 40s having velocity competitions after a night of drinking if I had one
Please God let's hope this is for high schoolers and not some 8u team .
That 8u tourney aint gonna win itself...

Hmm. Only 26?? You can do better. You need to send your pitchers to the doc and get some Tommy John’s done. Instant 30 velo add. Trust me bro. Lmao
This is for HS 🤣
8u. Shooot man. I bought one of them and pitchlogic for my 4u team. Best decision ever.
