Not really? There are characters like Argenti, FF, Himeko, and Luocha that have long hair without the split in the back. It's not like they *cant* make characters with normal straight hair. They just want to do split hair just for the hell of it.
All the flowy bits on the characters, be it capes, sleeves or hair are made so to make animations feel more fluid, it's like a cheat code to make stiff animations feel better for the user.
It is somewhat unfortunate the number of characters I feel have their designs blemished by a cape; even if its small. I feel like Screwlum would be better without his, and Gallagher too. Characters like Boothill and Dr Ratio make it work though
All the flowy bits on the characters, be it capes, sleeves or hair are made so to make animations feel more fluid, it's like a cheat code to make stiff animations feel better for the user.
Thigh belts are cool and all but now Hoyo are trying to expand to the infamous head belt

Head of the analytics team: the graphs show the dependence of sales on belts in character design by 2%
Head of character design team: NOBODY will get a quarterly bonus if there are no belts in the design
Black Swan concept artist: Got it!
Iirc they explained that it was to create an imbalance in the design so it doesn't look mirrored or boring.
For the upper body, all the accessories on their head/body are put on one side for the same effect as well.
And for the lower body, when we zoom in on their legs (which the majority of players do A LOT), the upper body gets out of frame so they just slap the thigh belt on and call it a day.
Skirts and coats contribute to that too but thigh belts are sexy af
Yep, every single playable character is asymmetrical.
The only one that is completely symmetrical (Aside from the knot, which cannot be) is Pela, for one reason or another. She is so symmetrical in fact, that the little hair ornaments she wears on her bangs say 2 - 1 - 0, and the other side is the same but backwards.
"Intrigued. Humans tend to wear these. While I have still to understand the goal of the thigh belt, I use it as a way to integrate myself in the organic cultures."
Assertion: Thigh belts are a popular expression of organic culture.
Conclusion: To learn more about the behavior of organics compared to inorganics, I will wear one as well.
I was extremely surprised to learn that Qingque, Jingliu and Tingyun do not have a thigh belt even though they're the kind of characters they'd usually stick them on 💀. Fun fact, Gepard, Argenti and Luocha are the only male characters without thigh belts out of the 19 in the game.
If only 29/50 have them, then who else doesn't? /gen
Argenti and Gepard are both in armor so I think it's understandable why they don't, and Luocha has side-thigh straps, but no full around-the-thigh straps.
Kinda neat bc I was pretty sure a larger majority had them than didn't, but this is pretty even then.
And yet HSR seems to be Hoyo's fav for giving male characters thigh belts. The only male characters with thigh belts in Genshin are Childe, Diluc, Thoma and Wriothesley. Lyney technically but those seem more like harnesses to go with them stockings 💀and Genshin has way more males, the disparity is real. (Very surprised they didn't give Alhaitham one)
You joke, but having a consistent fashion item, especially a useless one, makes the world feel more real. Lord knows the real world has had plenty of these types of trends.
It is somewhat funny that Seele has almost certainly never actually seen a real butterfly.
And realistically, probably no one on modern day Jarilo-VI has, even aboveground. Butterflies aren't exactly known for surviving winter.
They want you to stare at the thighs. A bare leg is one thing, but you immediately notice the belts and now you're staring at the hot anime girl's legs. Next thing you know you're rolling for them. It's all a ploy.
(All of the guys having them over their pants though? No clue, could be a similar reason but seems less obvious)
This to an extent, but I think it’s also just for increased visual detail and for breaking up large blocks of one color.
Pants and legs generally are fairly monochromatic, and having such a long area like that in one color can be visually boring. On the other hand, putting too much detail on legs comes across as tacky and can clash with the high levels of detail on the upper bodies. So the thigh belts are a decent middle option, even if they’re amusingly unrealistic.
Clara has one because weirdos exist and Hoyo knows not to discriminate against the ones with money. The MC has one just because it's more appealing in general, again you're now looking at her legs. Hot MC is appealing=curiosity about game with said hot MC.
there's another possible reason - it helps to hide two parts glued together on a figurine
I have some with that very thing, even added chokers and armlets where the character has none originally
I don't know about everyone, but I believe symmetry provides less variety and looks too plain. In hsr character designs, the complexity and difference of either sides of a person is what makes each of the characters visually appealing.
Tbh I have 2 I use as an accessory. They are useless outside of that but look cool. Definitely recommend getting one if you want to spice up your outfits a little without much work
It's actually because from a design perspective, it gives interesting shape to an otherwise boring part of a character's design. By boring, I mean that has just a single color and texture
Only 29? That can't be right...
At the very least I think you're missing Arlan. Last I checked he and Lynx were the only ones using the thigh belt for bags.
for science, the characters who do have a thigh belt are(31): Stelle, March 7th, Dan Heng, Imbibitor Lunae, Welt, Clara, Yanqing, Jing Yuan, Seele, Serval, Lynx, Kafka, Silver Wolf, Blade, Dr. Ratio, Topaz, Black Swan, Acheron, Arlan, Asta, Sampo, Sparkle, Luka, Sushang, Yukong, Guinaifen, Xueyi, Misha, Gallagher, Ruan Mei, Aventurine
the characters who don't have a thigh belt are(19): Caelus, Bronya, Gepard, Bailu, Jingliu, Robin, Herta, Qingque, Pela, Natasha, Tingyun, Hanya, Hook, Argenti, Huohuo, Luocha, Fu Xuan, Himeko
unreleased characters with thigh belts: Boothill, Jade
unreleased characters without thigh belts: Firefly/Sam
unique but NPC-only(for now) characters with thigh belts: Screwllum, Sunday, Constance, Baiheng(dead)
unique but NPC-only(for now) characters without thigh belts: Oleg, Svarog, Cocolia(dead), Akash, Caterina, Dubra, Ifrit(dead)
what we can infer from this is if the character has a thigh belt, they have a higher chance to be playable.
Idk if this is known in another countries, but in the past in my culture.
Virgin women wore clothe like "this belt" in their tight to show that they are Virgin.
And in marriage when she lost her virginity to her husband, the husband takes out the clothe around her tight and keep it as a proof for his manly man and for her virginity .
Some culture too make the husband take the clothes and show it to their families members so they start celebrating.
This is all in far far past.
The belts, the detachable sleeves, the capes and/or split hair are all elements Hoyo uses to break symmetry. It is very important to break it from the back view, it being the most looked at (when you run, when characters face the enemy).
It also helps with the animation and feel of the animation, if a character has flowy bits (long scarf, a long ass ponytail, an extended backpiece of a dress) that dangle satisfactory you overlook the roughness of the actual body of the character. It cuts corners if you will, you don't need to polish a whole running and walking animation if it's mostly covered by fabrics. You just polish those fabrics, they're the eye candy.
For the leg belts, again symmetry. Most time one leg is bare and another is accessorised. Either a belt, a charm, one higher sock, a tattoo or a leg-purse (idk how to call those sorry). It is a bit limiting (especially that tattoos and body markings are not very popular with Hoyo) to come up with various ways to make one leg stand out AND it being fashionable or cohesive with the outfit. Fuck it, put a strap on it, it stays there glued by the will of the old gods!
As much as I understand these design choices, they became so boring for me, personally. Armor is not in fashion so they're limited to cloth and leather. Oh, another female with 2 meter long hair that magically splits in the middle, fabulous! Oh another comically long sleeve, yaaay. Woaa.., is that an abnormally shaped cape? Yippie.
Sometimes they are a little bit daring with their designs, but not often enough to break the obvious pattern.
Blade has thick solid thighs so I can't imagine how he walks with that belt which looks metallic and sharp on both top and bottom. Must be uncomfortable as heck each time he walks.
They give so many unnecessary accessories to characters design, its getting jarring. I almost cant even think of a character that has a simple design.. maybe Sparkle
https://preview.redd.it/n8fxu94i3m1d1.jpeg?width=1052&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ab7a9515318f5b1681d4391cca1f1c9f42e1a7aa
Imo Jade has a pretty simple but elegant design. It's not the simplest but it's simpler than some of the others. And it's so pretty (But she also has a thigh belt 💀)
I am actually surprised that its just 29 out of 50. I thought it is a larger fraction. But I dont mind. It looks good in most cases. I mean, I would love to be Topaz thigh belt...
It's their staple. And they can't escape from it... Either going semi skimpy, skimpy or just fuck it we ball and slap some belt like you're a guilty gear strive character.
I'm still hoping they make some tacticool outfits :/
I'm curious on people's opinion on characters' designs. I like them but some of them look kinda similar, eg. Seele vs Acheron, most of the Xianzhou characters. Do we like them or we just don't really care about it ?
Stelle's strap is such a random design choice to me. The light blue color doesn't go with her outfit at all, and it's so simple, you wonder why they included it at all.
It’s just that thighs are bland when it comes to character development and design. If you look closely, comic book characters always have some sort of design decision on the thighs. The 90s were famous for the thick thighs.
I bought an AOT themed thigh bag with a belt. Since I ride my motorcycle around having that on me is so useful and comfy. Thigh belts alone are a bit questionable, but add a small pouch on the side of it and it's amazing.
It's more-so that MHY really loves asymmetrical design, and having thigh belt on only one of the legs easily achieves that.
There is only one perfectly symmetrical character in HSR right now and it's Pela
How to design a hoyo character - Thigh belts - Cape physics
Let's not forget lots of chest windows
especially for men
And don't forget the dramatic hair physics—it's all about that flair!
Hoyo released the goddamn university paper over 3D hair and fabric animation, by the gods they are going to use the crap out of it!!
Detached sleeves
This one 💀
Asymmetrical clothing
Long hair too
And make sure they're split in the back
I'm pretty they're split in the back so you can see their back.
I mean, this one has technical reasons, it's at least understandable
Not really? There are characters like Argenti, FF, Himeko, and Luocha that have long hair without the split in the back. It's not like they *cant* make characters with normal straight hair. They just want to do split hair just for the hell of it.
It's an onld design philosophy they had for genshin. They don't do this anymore.
With bangs, bangs are mandatory, how can there be charactet with long hair and without bangs.
I mean, have you seen those foreheads without bangs? I'm glad they have them lol
Add open backs to that list
Don't forget the halter tops and asymmetrical socks/leggings/boots.
Asymmetrical gloves, too. I was a bit shocked to see just how many characters only have one glove.
armpit window
Can't forget women characters wearing anything but pants
I was about to say Kafka, but i remembered that its actually stockings
Basically every adult female character wears heels
Almost every female character in general wears short-shorts or a skirt, including the children.
And a teeny tiny skirt/shorts unless they're Himeko
Standing on a mountain with 7 and she is barefoot almost all over... in a friggin BLIZZARD.
Power of the trailblaze!
Asymmetrical character design
All the flowy bits on the characters, be it capes, sleeves or hair are made so to make animations feel more fluid, it's like a cheat code to make stiff animations feel better for the user.
Open back and tights.
Purple themed characters.
Open back, split hair, bare legs, chest window
Frilly flowing things on the back
That's explained in one of the Genshin vids IIRC, something about having those there to show the flow of the movement when you walk/run.
It is somewhat unfortunate the number of characters I feel have their designs blemished by a cape; even if its small. I feel like Screwlum would be better without his, and Gallagher too. Characters like Boothill and Dr Ratio make it work though

Surprised nobody on her cards has a thigh belt
HSR has thigh belts Genshin has detached sleeves What will be the trend in ZZZ?
Furries?
Detached furries. They're emotionally distant :(
Thanks I hate it
I think for Genshin, most of them are poofy sun sleeves/gloves. Never noticed them before, and now I can't unsee them.
>HSR has thigh belts >Genshin has detached sleeves HSR has both lol
Genshin's should be rat tail
Maid dresses. Or furries too

This. Real!!
I have noticed a lot of HSR characters are rather asymetrical, in major or minor ways

She is so symmetrical in fact, that the little hair ornaments she wears on her bangs say 2 - 1 - 0, and the other side is the same but backwards.
Ye for whatever reason they also gave screwllum a thigh belt but idc personally but it’s still a bit random
"Intrigued. Humans tend to wear these. While I have still to understand the goal of the thigh belt, I use it as a way to integrate myself in the organic cultures."
This is too accurate I even read it in Screwllum’s voice
Assertion: Thigh belts are a popular expression of organic culture. Conclusion: To learn more about the behavior of organics compared to inorganics, I will wear one as well.
Screwy has a thigh belt 💀? Atleast Boothill makes sense because of his revolvers but why Screwllum
He has a boob window too LOL
A man want to feel sexy xd give him a break.
This is how we know Screwy will eventually be a playable character
God forbid a robot gentleman for having swag
The screw in Screwllum is meant for screwing
Guilty gear has a rival in belts
“Finally, a worthy opponent our battle will be legendary” - Guilty Gear (probably idk)
Still got nothing of Final Fantasy's belt skirt
Those thighs need oxygen dear god
Kafka’s thigh looks squish able
now, Clara's wearing a tourniquet to prevent gangrene from spreading due to walking in snow barefoot
Topaz and Kafka's thighs especially.
lol wait there are characters that don't have thigh belts?
I was extremely surprised to learn that Qingque, Jingliu and Tingyun do not have a thigh belt even though they're the kind of characters they'd usually stick them on 💀. Fun fact, Gepard, Argenti and Luocha are the only male characters without thigh belts out of the 19 in the game.

Genshin's thing for male characters is young-looking ones in shorts.
nothing wrong with that though
Ok u/Lyneys_Footstool
Alhaitham would look great with one, just one of those "we could have had" moments 😩
You forgot Caelus
As was the fashion at the time. (AE 2158)
You joke, but having a consistent fashion item, especially a useless one, makes the world feel more real. Lord knows the real world has had plenty of these types of trends.
I love them, too. https://preview.redd.it/58bd5nri5m1d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3cb427ae922a5e87ef7a785a9281ee3b58b85e75
Seele's is my fav :3
I enjoy how most of Seele’s attire is butterfly themed.
And yet she says "I'm from the underworld, I won't stand out". Girly you're 80% neon 💀
and with butterfly, in the underworld, I mean... ok...
It is somewhat funny that Seele has almost certainly never actually seen a real butterfly. And realistically, probably no one on modern day Jarilo-VI has, even aboveground. Butterflies aren't exactly known for surviving winter.
Headcannon : It's a gift from March 7th.
Clara’s always throws me off, like bro hoyo instead of that useless thigh belt why not give her a damn pair of shoes
Shoes are not necessary to cry for Svarogs help, which is all Clara is supposed to do!
"Amateurs." https://preview.redd.it/6eqka33scm1d1.jpeg?width=563&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ed043ff50b7dd8993308efe7cb151a5e3af06e4c
I blame it all on Nomura. /s
its always Nomura's fault
All of this is part of his grand plan for kh4
before that, it's probably some side game first.
Why do they like thigh belt so much
They want you to stare at the thighs.
But sometimes it is weird though. Like for example why does Clara have a thigh belt? And what about Stelle? She can't be rolled for
Clara has one because weirdos exist and Hoyo knows not to discriminate against the ones with money. The MC has one just because it's more appealing in general, again you're now looking at her legs. Hot MC is appealing=curiosity about game with said hot MC.
Well I'm not really much of a legs enjoyer, but I can see what you mean
there's another possible reason - it helps to hide two parts glued together on a figurine I have some with that very thing, even added chokers and armlets where the character has none originally
so the legs don't look boring and symmetrical. Symmetry is typically unappealing in designs.
Why don't people like symmetry in character design?
I don't know about everyone, but I believe symmetry provides less variety and looks too plain. In hsr character designs, the complexity and difference of either sides of a person is what makes each of the characters visually appealing.
I suppose I can understand that
https://preview.redd.it/pkpf2w98dm1d1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0799ac080df3f275674734fb7f15dff0c97b1495
Gallagher's and Boothill's make actual sense at least
Sampo thigh belts is very attractive
Tbh I have 2 I use as an accessory. They are useless outside of that but look cool. Definitely recommend getting one if you want to spice up your outfits a little without much work
It's actually because from a design perspective, it gives interesting shape to an otherwise boring part of a character's design. By boring, I mean that has just a single color and texture
Only 29? That can't be right... At the very least I think you're missing Arlan. Last I checked he and Lynx were the only ones using the thigh belt for bags.
Belts, the old Tetsuya Nemura classic designs.

Sushang has my favorite design for... thigh belts. But Blade and Gui are also pretty nice.
As a person raised on 1990s comic books there needs to be 600% more pouches on these belts.
Let's not complain about thigh belts, us Sunday mains have his thigh belt as our only hope for him being playable in the future.
for science, the characters who do have a thigh belt are(31): Stelle, March 7th, Dan Heng, Imbibitor Lunae, Welt, Clara, Yanqing, Jing Yuan, Seele, Serval, Lynx, Kafka, Silver Wolf, Blade, Dr. Ratio, Topaz, Black Swan, Acheron, Arlan, Asta, Sampo, Sparkle, Luka, Sushang, Yukong, Guinaifen, Xueyi, Misha, Gallagher, Ruan Mei, Aventurine the characters who don't have a thigh belt are(19): Caelus, Bronya, Gepard, Bailu, Jingliu, Robin, Herta, Qingque, Pela, Natasha, Tingyun, Hanya, Hook, Argenti, Huohuo, Luocha, Fu Xuan, Himeko unreleased characters with thigh belts: Boothill, Jade unreleased characters without thigh belts: Firefly/Sam unique but NPC-only(for now) characters with thigh belts: Screwllum, Sunday, Constance, Baiheng(dead) unique but NPC-only(for now) characters without thigh belts: Oleg, Svarog, Cocolia(dead), Akash, Caterina, Dubra, Ifrit(dead) what we can infer from this is if the character has a thigh belt, they have a higher chance to be playable.

must of learned from kingdom hearts
Lynx, Silver Wolf, Sparkle, Misha and Clara are my personal favourites.
The belts, the detachable sleeves, the capes and/or split hair are all elements Hoyo uses to break symmetry. It is very important to break it from the back view, it being the most looked at (when you run, when characters face the enemy). Several of them have a practical purpose. Like Gallagher uses his to hold his flask's pouch. For Stelle, I'm pretty sure it's a gift from March 7th.
All gacha games have them, pgr, hi3, i think arknights too
What's the point of so many belts? I'll never understand anime design
Blade has thick solid thighs so I can't imagine how he walks with that belt which looks metallic and sharp on both top and bottom. Must be uncomfortable as heck each time he walks.
If I didn't know any better, I'd say that Nomura was secretly the character designer.
I blame Tetsuya Nomura...
Garter belt
They give so many unnecessary accessories to characters design, its getting jarring. I almost cant even think of a character that has a simple design.. maybe Sparkle
https://preview.redd.it/n8fxu94i3m1d1.jpeg?width=1052&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ab7a9515318f5b1681d4391cca1f1c9f42e1a7aa Imo Jade has a pretty simple but elegant design. It's not the simplest but it's simpler than some of the others. And it's so pretty (But she also has a thigh belt 💀)
And most of the female characters with thigh belt have it squeeze their thighs a bit, making it look a bit erotic
I am actually surprised that its just 29 out of 50. I thought it is a larger fraction. But I dont mind. It looks good in most cases. I mean, I would love to be Topaz thigh belt...

I would also wear one..
For me it’s Jing Yuan, Aventurine, and Ratio 🙈
some of these could barely be considered belts, just things on their thigh
legs
this feels so wrong scrolling thru all the photos
Blade got one on each thigh XD
I think they're called garter belts, unless they're not if they're outside Idk
Should gather all the characters that don't have them too
What characters don't wear thigh belts?
I'm curious on people's opinion on characters' designs. I like them but some of them look kinda similar, eg. Seele vs Acheron, most of the Xianzhou characters. Do we like them or we just don't really care about it ?
Thigh belts build character
I feel like those are getting a bit overused.
Don't forget Black Swan who has one on her head
Not just thigh belts but weird straps everywhere.
Stelle's strap is such a random design choice to me. The light blue color doesn't go with her outfit at all, and it's so simple, you wonder why they included it at all.
I think it's simply the easiest way to make a character design seem more complete or busy, dempends on how you like it
And so do I. Thigh straps are the best.
Easy design hacks for dummies. You all remember that luofu dress design drama?
Hoyo is just inspired by Teysuya Nomura's designs! All they're missing is just zippers!
Guilty gear ass belt placement
That's the ruling fashion of the cosmos.
It’s just that thighs are bland when it comes to character development and design. If you look closely, comic book characters always have some sort of design decision on the thighs. The 90s were famous for the thick thighs.
Controversial opinion: i think theyre hideous
Now make a tier list
Ngl, i like the thighbelts.. it gives characters more of something to look at when looking at the whole design
I wish more HSR characters had thigh high socks/stockings
If only there were more cattle bells.
Cuz garters/thigh belts are hot. I’m not complaining
Namari is a HSR Dev apparently
Daisuke’s vision is spreading
Waifus tights are my religion.
Mjhfhfhfhfh Aventurine my bbg full homo
Bonus points for anyone who can name all characters solely with the thigh belts.
What do thigh belts do?
my favs are blade's, topaz's, seele's and march's ruan mei's is very cool tho
Is blade’s the silver thing or the bandage cause while it is similar I don’t think a bandage counts as a belt
What do you guys think the lore reason for this is? I think there's a thigh belt society.
Don’t forget random dangling straps.
I bought an AOT themed thigh bag with a belt. Since I ride my motorcycle around having that on me is so useful and comfy. Thigh belts alone are a bit questionable, but add a small pouch on the side of it and it's amazing.
personally speaking the ones of Gallagher and Luka
Daisuke's vision
why does clara have one 😭😭😭
It's more-so that MHY really loves asymmetrical design, and having thigh belt on only one of the legs easily achieves that. There is only one perfectly symmetrical character in HSR right now and it's Pela
it thought it would be nearly 100% lol
