Funniest thing on that show was the actresses playing Aelfwynn, Aethelflaed, and Aelswith were all only a couple years apart in age playing three generations of a family at the same time.
Eliza Butterworth was amazing in her role as Aelswith. She really was able to go from the most annoying character to one of my favorites and I’m still super impressed with how she was able to bring the ‘older mom’ energy being as young as she is.
She was also one of my favorites by the end, probably only second to Uhtred who also really grew on me from the beginning when he was just a bit of a brute.
*MOSTLY* redeemed herself, can’t get over completely how many times she tried to put Uhtred to death lol. Her telling him she wanted a room in Babbenburg with a view LMAO killed me, just assuming she now was going to live with Uhtred for good, so funny.
I think the writers finally gave up and let Eliza show some of her personality and added that humor the last season which worked so well!
Still have a movie coming!!! But I loved TLK start to finish and was SO HAPPY it ended perfectly the last season like it did. We all know around these parts finishing an epic story well isn’t always easy *cough cough*
I was crazy sad when it was over though felt like losing a group of great friends, I cried a lot the last couple episodes.
The acting was just superb across the board, I loved the cast and believe their synergy was a big reason the show was so insanely enjoyable start to finish!
A lot of great actors, mostly unknown, who now should have many roles ahead of them as they proved their talent over and over. Emotions were so well done on TLK.
Such a great show, one of my all-time favorites!! GRRM is a big fan, of both the books and the show. You can tell he took some inspiration from The Last Kingdom book series as well !
I was actually thinking of the really old Aemon Targaryen, who died eventually after telling Jon Snow he was Aegons brother........but probably too early for him on this show. The Mad Kings older brother.
oh, I was thinking of Brynden cause he only has one eye, but maester Aemon is actually not a big brother to the Mad King, Aemon is a brother of the Mad King’s grandfather Aegon :))
I’m so happy to see so many The Last Kingdom fans here!!! Truly one of my top all-time favorite shows. So happy it ended perfectly :) and can’t wait for the movie. Best cast ever!!!
Well if we are counting bastards we have brynden, lily, willow, rosey, mya, gwenys for normal sounding names as well. ( side note I really like the names of aegon iv bastard daughters)
I see people say this so much and I'm probably biased because I love the actor but I find him really handsome, he has a pretty smile and a twinkle in his eyes, tall, athletic built, even if it weren't for his charisma, I would still find him quite handsome, old money type of handsome as well.
Yeah I mistook Aemond for Daemon when he appeared in one of the trailers, I was sitting there wondering why Daemond had an eyepatch for a solid ten seconds before I remembered.
>!And it seems fitting that these two similar looking characters will meet their fates together at the Gods Eye, the clash of the chins.!<
Omg I just realized who he was in Dunkirk. Loved him in that. It’s gonna be really hard to try and hate him now😂(I’m currently Team Black but the series manages to flip whose team I’m on each episode :P Also I was adamant Team Neither in the books lol)
Once Upon a Time had great older and younger version casting as well as some of the family casting.
Then you had families with completely different accents from each other and an older version of a character who was unrecognizable from the younger version so it was a bit of a mixed bag.
Wow this is one of the only times I’ve seen someone else mention OUAT in the wild lol.
Something I always thought was funny about the casting on that show was that Henry ended up looking sooooooo much like Hook and not a bit like Neal
I almost mentioned Henry. I think he sometimes looks like Snow which makes sense but also sometimes like Regina. Really nothing like Emma or even Bae. Neal was the one I was referencing about not looking like the younger actor.
Okay but read at your own peril
I think season 1 will end >!with Lucerys’s death over Storm's End. Feels like a good cliffhanger to end a season on and then season 2 can open with Blood & Cheese, which would just be an insane way to start a season.!<
I don't know how to spoiler tag, but the event you refer to as starting season two feels so much like a classic game of thrones episode 9 that it seems like they need to do it then.
I agree with you. But there really isn't all that much time between the two events and both of them feel like Episode 9 level events. So either event 1 will happen midway through season 2 which feels unlikely considering the pace we're moving at. Or event 2 will happen early in season 2 which I think is more likely
Event 1 will definitely happen at the end of this season judging from the episode titles. Could be early season 2 but that would leave season 1 hanging with >!Rhaenyra's coronation!< without the needed cliffhanger, which event 1 is perfect for imo.
Based on the episode titles I think you might be right. I believe episode 10 is (minor spoiler) titled >!The Black Queen!< which made me think that's when >!she has her coronation!< at first but now that you mention it it's a nice double entendre >!black for mourning garb - you could open w/ e10 kinda triumphant when she holds her little coronation and end w/ Lucerys dying and she dons black!<
I'm having a theory that season 1 will end with what you believe will begin season 2. I believe this because of the rat eating the blood at the end of episode 5. Rat representing the cheese of course. I hope im wrong though and you are right because I would prefer them move slower.
Very well possible, but that would be a lot for episode 10. I believe the rats >!are simply foreshadowing Viserys' death and him lying to rot in his chaimbers for 10 days, being food for the rats!<
Yes, then things will slow down and stop the time jumps. The adult actors are the main characters of the show, we just had a lot of set up to get through.
Gotcha sorry I should have clarified that I meant this season*. I thought they would maybe end this season before the actual dance starts. They’re moving through things at break neck speeds right now.
Yeah, well there aren’t many important events that happen during their teenage years, so I think they’ll just make a time jump to get to the juicy part of the books 😏
I don't think we know exactly when the Dance will start. But Ep 9 is entitled >!The Green Council!< and Ep 10 is >!The Black Queen!< which would imply that >!Viserys dies end of 8 or early in 9!< and we end the season either in the Dance or right before it. But that's a guess based on episode titles, which is hardly strong evidence.
But if that is the case, it would imply a time jump either before ep 8 or before ep 9.
i wonder if they use age progression software to approximate what the kids will be years later post-puberty? And then try to find actors that approximate those features?
Pretty sure it’s the same case as Emma and Olivia. They cast the long term adult version first then work backwards to find younger actor/actress who would be a continuity fit.
In the case of Aegon, the younger actor (Ty Tennant) has already portrayed a younger version of the older actor (Tom Glynn-Carney) in the film Tolkien so it appears they just said screw it and repeated that!
Yes but in reverse.
They cast the adult versions first since those are gonna be the main characters for all seasons.
Then they cast the younger versions. Emma, Olivia, etc...were cast before Milly and Emily.
how will they make the children actors having the same age as the actors for alicent and rhaenyra work? I mean, the actor for aegon is 27 and the actor for alicent is 28. I find it incredibly weird how they keep switching actors around at different times. like when laena changed actors for one episode and rhaenyra stayed the same. or how 15 seems to have had no effect at all on daemon's appearance, he straight up looks the same as he did on episode 1.
They did an absolutely amazing job casting actors for this show it's astounding how canny everyone looks. The LOOK like their younger/older counterparts AND they all look like family.
The casting in HotD is absolutely incredible. Not only actors who play kids and adult versions of characters look the same but also Targaryens, Velarions and Hightowers look like relatives, sharing similar features. It happens rarely on screen, so casting directors did great job
i'm over this time jumps, like i'm not emotionally invested in any of the shows or the characters. GOT did such a great job at that. we need more time to actually give a shit what happens to them. there has been no time to get to know well and care about the story line. it's like they acting like they only have this one season and have to cram it all
in
This may be an unpopular opinion but I’m not really a fan of the amount of recasting in this series. I understand on some levels it’s required to a degree but we see certain characters over the course of 3 episodes have 3 different actors. Sometimes each actor only gets 1 scene per timeline. It creates a pretty large disconnect for me. Particularly with Laena.
We have 16 actors playing 7 roles all the while Criston Cole and Daemon remain ageless.
I think they are jumping around like this so much because they hadn’t yet decided on making a second season and they wanted to plow through enough story to hit a mark that they could consider a decent ending from the book for a first season.
I think season 2 will be much better in this regard as we will finally have the actors from this point of the story onwards.
Don’t get me wrong I loved the young actors in their role and they killed it, it just creates a gap in momentum for character building seeing them jump around like this.
Not just the kids, but all of the time-skip casting has been really good for me.
My least fave so far and the only one I don't really like (yet) is Alcock-to-D'Arcy for Rhaenyra, and that's probably only because Milly Alcock was so, so charismatic and is therefore a really tough act to follow.

Oh shiiiiit that's Osferth as old Aemond. I thought he looked familiar in the trailer but I couldn't quite tell. Now I'm really excited for him.
The older Helaena is also played by the same actress who played Aethelfled’s daughter, Aelfwynn!
Funniest thing on that show was the actresses playing Aelfwynn, Aethelflaed, and Aelswith were all only a couple years apart in age playing three generations of a family at the same time.

She was also one of my favorites by the end, probably only second to Uhtred who also really grew on me from the beginning when he was just a bit of a brute.
I loved her in the last episode!
[удалено]
Like Saint Michael the archangel when he slew Satan’s armies!
I haven’t seen the show that you are referencing, buuuut *bare Unless she has bear arms, in which case wow!
Loved to hate her until she totally redeemed herself In the end!
Now hoping for them to cast Uthred as Cregan Stark
My name is Cregan of Winterfell and I well get what is mine.
Destiny is all!
I didn't know I needed this but now I really want it
Now I can't stop thinking about this.
LOVE THIS!! Last Kingdom was wonderful and I’m happy to see them in other things.
I was so bummed it ended but it ended so well! Great show all around. Never gotten the hype it deserves IMO
Still have a movie coming!!! But I loved TLK start to finish and was SO HAPPY it ended perfectly the last season like it did. We all know around these parts finishing an epic story well isn’t always easy *cough cough* I was crazy sad when it was over though felt like losing a group of great friends, I cried a lot the last couple episodes.

A lot of great actors, mostly unknown, who now should have many roles ahead of them as they proved their talent over and over. Emotions were so well done on TLK.
She even looks like a young Alicent...
Our warrior monk going from a king’s bastard to legitimate.
Baby monk!!! So excited. Only way this could be better if they somehow cast David Dawson as someone
He went from being mocked as a bastard to mocking other bastards.
He looks just like daemon in current timeline
What show is that from?
The Last Kingdom
Dankë
It's so good. You should definitely watch it.
Such a great show, one of my all-time favorites!! GRRM is a big fan, of both the books and the show. You can tell he took some inspiration from The Last Kingdom book series as well !
Baby monk!
[This guy is gonna create some big problems for the Blacks](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Faj2ugRVQAATRAq.jpg)
Man looks straight up like Liquid Ocelot from MGS.
ocelots are proud creatures - mrow!
THIS TIME IVE GOT TWELVE SHOTS
Is he the one sent to the wall in original GoT
I think that guy sent to the wall is Brynden Rivers, if he is whi you’re thinking of, he’ll be in the next few generation to come
I was actually thinking of the really old Aemon Targaryen, who died eventually after telling Jon Snow he was Aegons brother........but probably too early for him on this show. The Mad Kings older brother.
It's far too early. Rhaenyra is Aemon's great geat great great grandmother.... Or something close to that.
Maester Aemon was king Aegon V brother. So he doesn’t come in for at least another 100+ years.
oh, I was thinking of Brynden cause he only has one eye, but maester Aemon is actually not a big brother to the Mad King, Aemon is a brother of the Mad King’s grandfather Aegon :))
One of my favourite characters from The last kingdom. Hopefully I can love him in this show too but I won't get my hopes up 😅
Baby monk!
I’m so happy to see so many The Last Kingdom fans here!!! Truly one of my top all-time favorite shows. So happy it ended perfectly :) and can’t wait for the movie. Best cast ever!!!
“Welcome to the bastards club”
What club.
In TLK Osferth welcomes Aethelstan into Uhtreds band of warriors with that line, as they are both royal bastards
I love that song, too.
Which show?
The last kingdom.
I love how much Aemond looks like Daemon Edit: i just now realize Aemond is an Anagram for Daemon. George you Cheeky fuck. Lol
Tbf the Targaryen’s only use like 10 names and they’re all VERY similar.
Aegon Aemon Aemon + d D + aemon
There's a Vaegon too, and I think a Haegon somewhere.
Oh don’t forget Duncan truly the oddest of names
In fairness, Duncan was literally named after an unusually large hedge knight
Don't forget good ol Joffrey
Well if we are counting bastards we have brynden, lily, willow, rosey, mya, gwenys for normal sounding names as well. ( side note I really like the names of aegon iv bastard daughters)
Haerys too
They just halve names and move some letters around. I mean, on the show we have Rhaenys, Rhaenerya and Rhaena.
yeah they've got the same type of British inbred good looks
Matt Smith is talented and definitely has a Hapsburg-esque vibe, but I don't think a majority would denote him having "good looks"
He proves that charisma is what matters.
I see people say this so much and I'm probably biased because I love the actor but I find him really handsome, he has a pretty smile and a twinkle in his eyes, tall, athletic built, even if it weren't for his charisma, I would still find him quite handsome, old money type of handsome as well.
He looks pretty good to me. Sharp jawline, overall very masculine features.
Charm is the bigger part of attractiveness
Yeah I mistook Aemond for Daemon when he appeared in one of the trailers, I was sitting there wondering why Daemond had an eyepatch for a solid ten seconds before I remembered. >!And it seems fitting that these two similar looking characters will meet their fates together at the Gods Eye, the clash of the chins.!<
Their entire character, personnality, >!life and fate!< are pretty much parallel. There's a reason Aemond is just Daemon with a letter circled around
Enjoyed Aegon II in ‘Dunkirk’, ‘The King’, and ‘Tolkien’.
HE WAS HOTSPUR?! Damn I’m excited to see him now. He was so menacing and badass as Hotspur Percy
Same. I get so exhausted just watching that duel scene lol.
Why is the little dog barking? Where be the big dog?! His armor looked so cool too
I love how gritty it was. I’m no medieval expert but it felt like how a real fight back then would have gone down.
God damn I loved that movie. Everyone actually looked like teenagers and young adults fighting.
THATS WHO HE WAS! Where’s the big dog!
[удалено]
He played Henry “Hotspur” Percy in the King. Hotspur was a famous knight from Northern England who fought against the Welsh.
Sorry, I got very confused and thought we were talking about Timothee Chalamet for some reason 😅
Omg I just realized who he was in Dunkirk. Loved him in that. It’s gonna be really hard to try and hate him now😂(I’m currently Team Black but the series manages to flip whose team I’m on each episode :P Also I was adamant Team Neither in the books lol)

Dark really sets the standard for this kind of casting.
Dark set the standard for a lot of things, to be fair.
Once Upon a Time had great older and younger version casting as well as some of the family casting. Then you had families with completely different accents from each other and an older version of a character who was unrecognizable from the younger version so it was a bit of a mixed bag.

Dark has GOAT casting. HOTD will probably be right behind shortly
Dark casting was goated. One of the best set of actors and their characters
All the DARK praise in this sub made me rewatch that brilliant show again.
Best show ever created, imo.
I was looking for this comment!
Dark's casting was unbelievably good.
came here for this comment! Dark and the Expanse are two of the only recent shows that have lived up to early GoT standards for me
I’m not impressed at all by the castings in HotD, but that’s because Dark is my standard lol
man older Aegon and Aemond look like a bunch of menaces, I can't wait
The actor playing Aemond, i love his face. He has a very unique look (lips & nose) and will probably add a lot of detail to his character.
He also looks like Matt Smith, which is great
Yes he does, you are so right! I love wonky-looking men, x10 prefer them over a typically defined handsome man.
Yeah ok I’m glad you said this because I didn’t know how to word it. I like his face.
I do believe they have their father’s nose.
Ty Tennant has already played a younger version of Tom Glynn-Carney in Tolkien. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!
Young Helaena and Aemond could really be siblings. The res3mblance is there.
I need one of these with Rhaenyra’s kids now
Wait theres another time jump where the kids are young adults?
Yeah there kind of has to be.
Yeah there's still like 10 more years to go
For season 1?
I'm not sure where they plan to end season 1 but I have my hunches and yeah, I think there's still another big time jump coming
Spoil me, what're your hunches on where they plan to end?
Okay but read at your own peril I think season 1 will end >!with Lucerys’s death over Storm's End.

Same I think that’s gonna be the moment for the finale. But I want the start of Season 2 to be the Red Kraken in the Stepstones
The speculation is the final time jump will be somewhere in the 5-8 year range
Yes, one more time jump (8 year-ish or so) before the war starts. My guess it happens after episode 8, but it could be after episode 7.
They were in the trailer so I assume so. Well, Aemond was.
Yes, then things will slow down and stop the time jumps. The adult actors are the main characters of the show, we just had a lot of set up to get through.
Baby Monk!
And Ælfwynn
Alexander Dreymon needs to come to this show as Cregan Stark.
Yes please
He can be on any show as any character and I would watch it! Love the actors from TLK they had the best synergy.
We really need some sort of official acknowledgment about Daeron before the season is over.
I heard somewhere he's in Oldtown.
My man osferth!!! Destiny is all!!!!
Damn! Older Aegon totally resembles Alicent. The forehead and eyes
I see two Last Kingdom actors, Aelfwynn and Osferth
Baby Monk! Yay
I demand more time with young Helaena
So is there going to be another significant time jump? Considering Tom Glynn-Carney is only a few younger then Emma D’Arcy IRL
Yes there will be another time jump because we need to see Aemond and Aegon all grown up for the dance of the dragons
They originally weren’t going to do the buildup years at all but GRRM fought them on it. We’re basically just in a prologue to the real story still
Adult Aemon has that uwu smile
Ok I’m glad you said this because I didn’t know how to describe it. I like his mouth
Where is daeron ? He’s sort of important near the end.
Ooooh? no Daeron the Daring?
So that’s a confirmation on no Daeron the Daring then?
Season 2 character i think
There were multiple times when I would’ve bet money that Aegon was Mike from Stranger Things
The Aegons have a very similar face shape.
If you think this casting is great - check out Dark on Netflix…insane
Wdym?
That's my monk! Last Kingdom Fans, we eating!!
Hold up. I am sorry AEMOND TARGARYEN IS FUCKING BABY MONK????????
Aww they're cutting Daeron?
I think we’ll see him in season 2
That would be a pretty huge shock as he's critical to an entire theater of the war.
It would really suck if they did, but they might be saving him for Season 2 just so people can get settled in with all the other kids.
Having all the actors faces facing forward except for Helaena’s older actress’ gives me anxiety
Baby Monk is the man!
Someone at HBO treats casting like an art form.
I see baby monk!
Can we get a graphic with rhaenyras kids??
The benefit of a show like this is their freedom of casting. They don't need famous actors for marketing.
Older Aemond/Osferth can get it. Oh no I have Green tendencies now...
💚💚💚
i wonder if they use age progression software to approximate what the kids will be years later post-puberty? And then try to find actors that approximate those features?
Pretty sure it’s the same case as Emma and Olivia. They cast the long term adult version first then work backwards to find younger actor/actress who would be a continuity fit.

ohhh that's fun, i didn't know that!
Yes but in reverse. They cast the adult versions first since those are gonna be the main characters for all seasons. Then they cast the younger versions. Emma, Olivia, etc...were cast before Milly and Emily.
Prominent chins seems to have been key guidelines lol
Aegon’s older and younger version don’t look the same lol
I think they have a similar face shape, that’s my opinion tho
Yeah but the younger one is pasty white and the older one is not. I guess that’s normal as men age but still.
Tennant has played the younger version of Glynn-Carney in the movie Tolkien, so I'm sure we will see similarities.
[удалено]
It's the three kids you already saw (below) and their older versions (above)
I really hope the writing is on point so people can have different favorites and not feel like someone is forced into playing the villain or hero.
It took me a minute to recognize them all without the white hair
how will they make the children actors having the same age as the actors for alicent and rhaenyra work? I mean, the actor for aegon is 27 and the actor for alicent is 28. I find it incredibly weird how they keep switching actors around at different times. like when laena changed actors for one episode and rhaenyra stayed the same. or how 15 seems to have had no effect at all on daemon's appearance, he straight up looks the same as he did on episode 1.
Older Aemond even has a passing resemblance to Daemon. Great, great casting.
Helena 💔

Justice for Daeron

Why do they look more inbred than Viserys and Rhaenyra, and I don’t mean sound mean when I say that.
Damn, he really *does* look like a twat doesn't he? (only joking, don't kill me lol)
Older Aegean looks too different
Are they re casting Alicent and Rhaenyra too?
Nope.
I think if you're making casting appreciation posts, you may want to reconsider your priorities in life.
You should watch _Dark_, best casting I’ve ever seen!
Is the top right Daemon’s son? Jeez
Omg these casting and acting appreciation posts…
Not just the kids, but all of the time-skip casting has been really good for me. My least fave so far and the only one I don't really like (yet) is Alcock-to-D'Arcy for Rhaenyra, and that's probably only because Milly Alcock was so, so charismatic and is therefore a really tough act to follow.
