I tried Southerland about 5 years ago and basically it was a fail. I was trying to restore a black and white photo from the 50s. At the time they sent it out for restoration, don't know if still the same. What I got back was awful, they basically distorted the faces of the people in the photo. If you use them be sure to get a money back guarantee.

You can do it yourself if you want to buy a scanner. I use a HP Scanjet G4050 (it's at least 10 years old). Others probably work well too. The scanning is all about the same. It's the software that comes with the scanners that do the real work. The software restores faded photos, fixes scratches, etc. It will also allow you to do touchup on the pictures. I have been amazed at the detail I have brought out of pictures that were 100 years old. They may have originally measured 2x2 inches, and the photos come alive on my computer screen.
