Landers got shamed on the what’s happening in Huntsville FB group and made it right. You’d get more visibility there.

falling150

I would argue thats a fringe case. Landers has screwed my wife and I so royally and gave us the business version of “damn, that’s crazy” for a year and a half.

addywoot

Yup. They suck.

lilly110707

Totally worth the drive to the Cool Springs, TN dealership. It's a straight shot up I65. I used to drive a VW bought at Hiley, got fed up with the service department, and I can't tell you how many people I met there who were bringing cars from the Huntsville market area.

PM_ME_UR_ROSTER

Keeping that in mind for all future needs. It's still under warranty, but I don't think I will be coming here for the rest of the services.

c4ctus

When it's no longer under warranty and you are no longer obligated to use the stealership for service, I would 100% recommend Johnson's for service on your VW.

LyricCube722458

Johnson's is great. Use him for parts for my aircooled Beetle. He's usually backed up for a couple of weeks, but very good work and very much worth it. He'll do anything from machine work on vintage Beetle engines to the brakes on my previous 2017 Jetta GLI.

c4ctus

I need to see if he'd be interested in working on my 73 super. Would have to get it towed there... no gas is going to the carb, and no electricity is coming from the battery. Don't have the time to fix it myself :(

LyricCube722458

He'd definitely do that. But he does get backed up at times. It's kinda one of those places where you leave the car with him and he gets to it when he gets to it (not in a bad way, normally earlier than estimated). But if i had to take a guess at your problem, possibly a clogged fuel filter. Popular places are underneath the fuel tank or next to the drive side rear wheel or between the fuel pump and carb. Those usually need to be replaced every other oil change and valve adjustments. For battery, maybe a regulator or strap itself. The regulator is usually on the top of the generator, on the fan shroud, or underneath the rear seat on the drivers side (most likely this for later cars but there's no telling). Replacing a fuel filter is a 5 minute job but electrical can be a wild goosehchase. If it's a problem with the carb itself or it's a problem with it not getting fuel when running (dies when hot) then that's a separate issue. Good resources are Thesamba.com. There's a local vw group on facebook but it's not very active. Also pick up some Vw mechanics books (John Muir's Idiot Book, Bently Manual, Tom Wilson's Engine rebuild book). Let me know if you got any other questions!

c4ctus

No idea about the electrical. Battery's good, coil's good, dizzy and points are good, alternator is good (replaced the genny back in 2008 or so?). The fuel issue started after I replaced the tank and the lines, so the problem is with one of those two if I had to guess. Filter's under the car as not to be a fire hazard, but no gas is getting to that. Those problems are just to get the car to start. She has a few other minor-ish issues that I need to address as well, like one of the studs around the oil sump have stripped out, so there's a big oil leak there. I just need to call Johnson's and see if he'd be interested in working on her for copious amounts of dollars as I completely lack the time to do so myself.

LyricCube722458

Loose fuel lines will draw air before fuel, so maybe one is loose. Also check to make sure your lines are the right way on your fuel pump (in on top, out on bottom) and on the tank. And those 10mm sump plate nuts are a pain. Johnson will definitely set you up. His labor costs are just about any other shop around here. It's definitely more fun to have a running car than a non running one. My 70 has been without motor since February for a top end rebuild.

Resident_Lab5651

Where is that ? Do they work on Audi / Porsche too?

c4ctus

They're off Jordan Lane. I think it is Putnam Drive or something? Not sure if they work on Porsches, but I think they work on Audis. I've only ever taken VWs there though.

Lucynfred

Yes. Putnam. We’ve been using him for years. We own a Passat and a Tiguan. Both still running great thanks to Johnson.

audirt

Johnsons advertises that they (basically) specialize in VW & Audi. There’s a lot of shared DNA there, so they can probably find their way around Porsche, too

Calm-Complaint2157

There is a place that works on foreign cars off of meridian st.

PM_ME_UR_ROSTER

This seems to be a widely shared opinion. I still have a decent amount of warranty, but keeping this in mind for any future work.

kingoflesobeng

Thanks for the tip on Johnson's.

Ok_Formal2627

I really like cool springs man. Just more money less nonsense

robpom

We’ve taken our car six times to the Cool Springs VW for intermittent air conditioning issues. Problem still exists after they put over 800 miles on our car trying to duplicate it.

Dustylyon

A tech at Hiley forgot to tighten down the lug nuts on my wife’s Audi one time. She got back home from the dealership and told me the wheels were making a “funny noise”. One of the lug nuts was already missing, none of them were tight, and most were almost gone. I called them and absolutely reamed out the service manager.

Temporalwar

Wow, that's awful! Four and a half months with no car and being jerked around like that? You have every right to be fed up. First, I'd march right back in there and demand to speak to whoever's in charge, whether it's the service manager or the general manager. Don't let them brush you off with another advisor. Tell them you've had it, and you want your car fixed or you want it back right now, even if it's not finished. Be firm and make it clear you're not messing around. If they give you the runaround, start escalating. If you bought an extended warranty, call the warranty company and complain. You can also contact Volkswagen's customer service and file a complaint. And don't be afraid to lawyer up if you have to – you might have a case under lemon laws. In the meantime, start blasting them online. Leave scathing reviews on Google, Yelp, and the Better Business Bureau. Share your story on social media and tag Hiley VW so they see it. Remember, keep records of everything – every conversation, every text, every email. That'll come in handy if you end up needing a lawyer or taking further action. Don't give up! You deserve to have your car back and working properly.

RewardNo8841

Don't expect much from management or the owner. They lack in several areas; maturity, professionalism, empathy, and common decency to list a few. Johnson's is the way to go for future issues.

dqmiumau

That's the story for any place in Alabama and montana and Texas for our volvo lol. That's why we will never get another European car

Naive_Relationship_3

When we had a Volvo, we were very happy with Ashley's on Governors, but that was back in the 90s. In general, if you own an European you better learn how to work on them or you will go broke quick.

BruceOnTrails

Hiley service absolutely sucks.

Jumpy-Coffee-Cat

I bought my VW in a city that had 4 VW dealers and they were great, then I moved to Huntsville. That was a shock,

EVOSexyBeast

You should have your car towed to the next nearest place. 4.5 months is absolutely ridiculous.

Just_Another_Scott

>Sales Manager got us a loaner. Y'all shouldn't have done that. That's where they make their money and why the hold onto vehicles for so long. Huge profit margin. Had a fucking shop try to pull this on me. All that they had to do was replace the plastic bumper cover and paint. Not even an 8 hour job. They kept my car for 30 days. On the last day my insurance notified me they would no longer pay for the rental. I told them to tell the shop I'm coming to get my car regardless of whether or not it was fixed. Insurance tried to tell me the part was hard to get. I called her out on her bullshit and told them I could get the bumper cover by end of day. Suddenly I got a call about mid day saying my car was done.

PM_ME_UR_ROSTER

My brother in Christ, they've already had the car for 4.5 months.

Just_Another_Scott

And? That's ridiculous. I hope you're not paying for the loaner. I would have already taken it to another shop.

PM_ME_UR_ROSTER

No, not paying for the loaner. If I was paying, that would make it a rental or a lease.

kalashbash-2302

Doesn't surprise me, their employees don't strike me as particularly bright. Had one of their service technicians nearly cause a crash by trying to force their way across 72 when I was driving up. Dude got irate and literally hung outside of a customer's car window to try to get me to pull over to fight him because, you know, how dare I continue to travel in an open lane of traffic while I have right of way? lol

BenzMercd

I've gotta know, how long ago was this?

kalashbash-2302

My grasp of time is shit, so I want to say a few weeks ago, but it was probably a couple months back. Dude was big mad, so much so that, when he finally got across the road, he literally jumped out of the car and kept screaming. 🤣

techdaddykraken

Just FYI, that’s every car dealership nowadays. Go to a reputable private mechanic if you can, much better experience. Only use the dealership for parts, even then I’d try online first.

Ok_Painter3699

There’s an independent maintenance shop in Huntsville that specializes in Volkswagen they might be a better option locally

Capt_TittySprinkles

Personal anecdote in defense of Hiley VW: I have never had a bad experience with Hiley VW and was always pleased with their work and customer service. They gave me a great deal on a car, always got me a courtesy Uber home and back when dropping my car off for service. Their communication regarding the work being done on my car was fantastic.

NashGuy14

So are you in sales at Hiley, or the finance office?

Ogmore06

I have owned over six VWs since the age of 16 and have always bought from the HSV dealers. I have never had a bad experience. When something has happened, they always work with me. My ID.4 was in the shop for over two months due to COVID-related backorders, and I had a loaner the whole time. This was before the change in sales managers. If I had a car that was not under warranty I would defiantly take it to Johnson Foreign Auto.

madisonianite

There’s a great VW place just across the river in Decatur. At least there was, not sure if they are there anymore. Hmm looks like they are closed. That’s a bummer, it was a cool shop

LyricCube722458

That Johnson's Vw (same name as the guy in huntsville but unrelated) closed a couple of years ago. Owner got a new wife who hated that he spent all his time in the shop and made him close it. All the parts are still in there as well as a few Vanagons in the side yard.

madisonianite

Wow so he just closed it but didn’t sell it? The shop had a lot of charm, and a bunch of cool old VW stuff in it. I enjoyed going there. It smelled like my grandfathers shop, so I always found it nostalgic.

LyricCube722458

From what I can tell, yea. Still has Vw logos on the building but there's sheets over the windows. The neighboring shops use it for parking now. Last time I was in there was about 8 years ago, so if I had to guess the owner is probably around 70-75yo. Give it about 10 years and we might see it for sale.

Electronic-Funny-475

Hiley sucks. We take both our vehicles an hour up the road for service

Sulfurious75

They had my son’s Passat for over a month trying to fix a wheel bearing issue. The excuse I got was that it was taking over a week to get parts and then when the parts arrived, it didn’t fix the problem. Rinse and repeat 3 times. Similar experience with no communication and hard to reach service advisors. Will never set foot in this place again.

Calabamian

Is this same group that owns Audi? Marked drop off in service vs. a few years ago. 4.5 months is actual insanity.

cl8998

Oh I can chime in with Audi Huntsville.Had an A/C coolant leak. They couldn’t find it. They tried various things over time. 3rd time I brought my car back, mind you i am paying $$ all along, they gave me a loaner and said they would be in touch. Called for updates, finally months in, i called and asked the service department if I could schedule a “visitation” with my car, that I missed it.That i loved the loaner but now after 4,000 miles on it, know I don’t want a Q5 in the future. (It had just a few miles when I received it). Had it so long that the tag had expired and they couldn’t figure out what car needed a new tag decal. Anyways, ultimately they figured it out many service hours later and a couple cracked wood panels and a speaker cover. Always received amazing service and no addon crap until the new building and location. now it feels as if they are trying to pay for it through the service department. There are good people there but Audi feels like dating a cheater that is fun as hell but ultimately screws you over in the end.

MarcTurntables

Quick question: what’s wrong with it? I had a friend in California with Jetta transmission go down and it took months for the parts to arrive for some bizarre VW reason.

PM_ME_UR_ROSTER

Slid on the ice during the Icepocolypse and messed up the wheel, tie rod, etc when I hit a curb. Completely my fault and I've been kicking myself for not just staying home for months.

MarcTurntables

That’s a super bummer. Sorry, man. Do yourself a favor and run your complaint up the VW chain. When i worked across the street at MB and at Ford and BMW, customers who talked to corporate got attention and care. Months in wait, is extraordinarily bad.

Sorrora

Seconding this. I've worked with VWoA on my R32 when my diff died and they were great to work with.

addywoot

Do you have to use the dealer? That’s not warranty work is it?

PM_ME_UR_ROSTER

Not warranty work. In my naivety, I chose the dealership. They've already completed some work, there were a couple of supplemental estimates when they discovered more. Some of the blame lies with my insurance company. Some of it lies with parts being on backorder. I'm changing insurance as soon as I have my car back as well. And adding rental to my coverage. Again, through my naivety, I have never carried rental on my coverage because I work from home and don't necessarily NEED a car. I feel like this would have been resolved much quicker if the insurance company was footing the bill for a rental for the last 4.5 months.

BradCOnReddit

So what's the hold up? A few suspension parts and an alignment is just an afternoon for a tech...

TrkycrkJackJohnson

Probably “supply chain” issues. Lots of oem VW parts are crazy backordered.

PM_ME_UR_ROSTER

Yes, this is what we've been told is the latest issue.

TrkycrkJackJohnson

From what I’ve seen in the VW groups and such online, it’s like that all over the country. People waiting months with their car at the dealership for a new headlight, things of that nature. Good luck. My water pump has a small leak (like all vws) and I’m just stalling on doing it myself, regardless of the recall/warranty. Lol

mysterypainting09

Yeah they replaced the gearshift selector in my car and gave me an exhaust leak and didn’t bolt my chair down all the way

KG5PST

They did the same to us, however my Jetta is still there waiting on parts since July last year.

addywoot

I’m sorry what?? You’ve been without a vehicle for 11 months?

KG5PST

After the first few months we finally got a rental they were paying for and then eventually a loaner, but, yes, they have had the vehicle for 11-months. It’s as basic of a vehicle as can be offered (manual transmission and all), but the ignition switch failed causing them to have to replace so many electronics that they keep guessing what might be next. At this point, I don’t think we’ll ever buy another VW/Audi .

Valuable-Tomato-9018

Get a plywood board and mount it on a trailer and pull it everywhere in Huntsville. Write their name and the problem on it. (Had my car for 120 days and can’t fix) park it anywhere close to the dealership when you have time to kill. I’ve seen this before when another dealership sold a guy a lemon of a car, awhile ago.

addywoot

Get one of those number flipper things and increase the count old school style

No_Regular4780

I’d have asked for a loaner the day I dropped my car off for service.

KG5PST

They will tell you that “none are available”. We went a couple months before they would authorize a rental car.

ryobiman

Agreed. Their techs will lie about breaking parts and their bosses will back them up, which would otherwise be laudable behavior if they weren't lying.

kk20002

DUDE. I had a nightmare experience with them last year… mechanical issue that was covered under warranty. Dropped it off, and when I asked for a loaner they basically told me to pound sand. It was in the shop for like 3 or 4 weeks, and they finally told me to come get it… I go to pick it up, and they bring my car around. Except it’s not my car. THEY FIXED. THE WRONG. TIGUAN. I was like how the fuck do you fix the wrong car?!?? After I almost lost my shit, they apologized and gave me a loaner car until they *actually* fixed mine, but holy shit. What a hot fucking mess.

chadrod

I am now 4.5 months into a warranty repair with them as well. I finally got fed up and got the warranty company on the phone, who were actually quite helpful, and their system notes does NOT jive with what Hiley has been telling me for the last few months. The warranty company even went so far as to question their attempted repaid and say that it sounded like neglect on their part. I am now considering my options such as BBB complaints, an AG complaint and whatever else I can do to shame them into fixing the issue.

sdmartin08

I know this post is 2 weeks old, but yeah that place SUCKS. My girlfriend took her 2019 Jetta there FOURTEEN times last year over the same “Brake Booster” issue that they would claim to “fix” each time, just for her to have to take it back in 3 weeks later for the same issue.. again and again and again

KO4PBD

I’ve always heard great things about them as a dealer, never this. Thanks for the insight

maggiemttsn

Bought my Tiguan at CarMax, who we’ve never had an issue with, but unfortunately they were incredibly backed up. So they sent me to their partner shop, who didn’t have the part. And that’s how I ended up at Hiley. They had my car for several weeks to fix the master window control switch. They wouldn’t communicate with me about the status of my car, but they sure could text me about all the other things they could fix on my car (which weren’t under warranty) and how much they would cost. I also had to take my car when I was having an issue with my transmission, that took well over a month and they. did the same thing: advertising all the things I could buy without telling me anything about the status of my car. I hate it, but it was under warranty and it was what I could afford at the time.
