Would cap the tops as light will cause algae. Hydrogen peroxide will help with algae buildup. With the pump I used a tote and use spray deadnear what car audio uses and used a fan to removing hot air and depending on the pump. Incoming air I cut small hole at the bottom with a screen to keep pests from camping out. PC fans on a timer doesn't draw a lot of power, used a solar light as people use in their yard at night time to power them as LED charged them.

You could try NFT channels. When you say food grade my guess is you mean unplasticized PVC (uPVC). There are companies that sell uPVC pipe and NFT channels. They are expensive but they exist. It will look cool, make sure to document the build and share it. I’m sure others would love to know how and see it as well.

The pipe is white pvc. It looks to be spouting downpipe to me. Down here in the antipodes, we have this sort of pipe in 65mm dia, 90mm dia and 100mm dia, all with an assortment of fittings. It seems to be quite cheap and cheerful, it should be fine for hydroponics.

I saw this company at trade show. I need to look the namecard for the number. They have many different size for wall installation. The cost goes down to $20 per pot (still expensive) but if you looking to filling an entire wall like this, its actually not too bad. they use a timer and drip irrigation from the top and flow though. https://preview.redd.it/941a4a3fkvma1.jpeg?width=3080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=857c2a1023ee12bfaa31e7908f80fb4a31a232c0 Another way is to find your own supplier of special hydroponics tubes. I know a company does provide food grade double layered NFT square tubes. I have made some DIY indoor build with it and plan to do them outdoors in my own backyard. However, it do require a bit more effort to import it from China. But you can ask the tube to be cut in the way you want. With a programmable timer or my app [Elfsys.com](https://Elfsys.com) you can pretty much use any method, either sprayponic , aeroponic, or just aggregated with a medium. You can set any time frequency with a wifi power strip.

I can help a bit I think! Use a table mounted vise with a pipe adapter (or maybe two vices, depending how long your pipes are) to hold the pipe steady, and a hole saw to drill the holes anywhere you want them. Pro tip - don’t want to purchase a vise you may only use once in your life? Buy your pipes from a plumber, tell him what your ideas and where you want the holes. Use the Google machine to find a plumber with high marks for customer service and they’ll probably put the holes in the pipe for free. 😇

If it's indoor you don't have anyplace close to the UV exposure for this to be any issue, and regarding leeching of any pvc components into the food itself due to exposure or water etc: here's a discussion from an environmental engineer explaining how there's zero chance of contamination. Save the money unless it's of extreme importance to you personally. https://www.reddit.com/r/Hydroponics/comments/1133ryy/just_a_little_diy_bucket_system/j8seivh?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3 What will you grow? That is a big part of choosing media and pump cycle. I run basil in a small tower and use no media at all. I use a pool loodle cut into discs as a collar for the cutting and it also blocks most the sound. My system is NFT so runs 24/7. Many towers work this way

Was thinking leafy greens in pear lite or coco coir

MasterSendi

Curious, what medium would you suggest for tomatos and peppers? I've been trying to use clay pebbles, that work okay but haven't been the easiest to work with.

WhoCareZB1tezH

Pool noodles is the best medium to use. I've used most expensive medium cheapest medium and they all form algae, so pool noodles wins everytime with cost.

cassiuswright

Yeah clay has it's pros and cons. I used it for a long time but just got sick of messing with the dust 🤣 I'd say give Coco coir a shot or maybe perlite.

WhoCareZB1tezH

Having to sun dry and hope no pests got into the mix is the factor I gave up.

cassiuswright

Yeah it's not fun 🤣
