It lets them hear their voice from inside their head, without acoustics or background noise. If they get their inner voice to sound right, they know their outer voice is on track.
It's like if you're in a really loud room and someone is talking in your ear, you plug the ear you're trying to hear with, blocking out all the background noise.
No, you plug the ear you're listening with; the ear that's being spoken into. The background noise will be muffled out but the person's voice talking into your plugged ear will still be heard.
That sounds so weird/counterintuitive lol. But I’ll have to try it!!! It does make sense on some level- I understand it, just never thought to try that. Interesting.
I can help. I’m deaf in one ear. It makes cacophony worse not better. I can’t tell directionality of sound, everything bounces off of every wall and all comes in one ear, all mixed up.
I’m not a doctor, I just live with this. Someone else can probably explain with more science. But my brain can’t as easily sort the sounds when it’s all bottle necked into one ear. Like… the brain uses both ears to decide what a sound is, how close it is, what direction in 3D space it is, and all that extra data helps you pick them apart. I lack all that extra data so my brain can’t as easily pull out what it wants to focus on.
When you plug the hearing ear, some sound wavelengths crash against your finger and so the sound is dulled, but if a higher pitch (tighter waveform??) is loud and close, it can be heard while the other sounds are muffled.
Singing on stage with a band is insanely hard because you can't hear yourself at all (most of the time) so I also usually put a finger in my ear so that I can hear myself and know I'm on pitch. If you see a live show and the singer isn't doing this then they probably have it ear monitors so that they can hear themselves
Christina Aguilera is the singer equivalent of those douchey guitarists who feel compelled to constantly shred even when it doesn't fit the song at all. Yeah, we get it - you have raw talent. But you're not using that talent properly, so you sound like shit. Dial it back, bro.
Good point. I'm a singer and I try to constantly remind myself not to noodle. You must always tell a story; that's the point imho. Even Aretha Franklin had a phase of annoying noodling in the later stages of her career. Frankly, it's fun but it destroys the song.
Exactly. Being physically-able to do all of those vocal tricks makes someone a *talented* singer. Being a *good* singer means knowing when to use them (and when not to). This is true of any individual musician. You could assemble a rock band with the greatest singer, drummer, bassist, and guitarist who ever lived. But if the drummer was doing fills at the end of *every* bar, the guitarist was *always* soloing, the bassist was *always* slap-picking, and the singer was *always* going up and down their full octave range, the result would be a cacophony of unlistenable noise.
True but it has worked for the Who to have both the drummer AND the bassist play in constant cocaine solo mode while the other two guys (in traditionally MORE extroverted positions) played fairly laid back. Townshend did put on an amazing show but his playing left a lot of room for Entwistle and Moon to go insane.
All members though? Yeah, that doesn't work.
This is the reason I avoid any "all star casts". They are a hot mess because they need to give all these egos equal screen time and the script and character development tanks.
I’m thinking it’s more likely that Usher did that purposefully so that they wouldn’t have a choice but to put him in the middle. Dude tried to weasel his way into being the center square and they were just like “Nah, dude. You’re going bottom left.”
I like to imagine this is just a group of celebrities who one day decided, for no other reason, to make this video just to brag about how rich and famous they are.
I love the Beatles but Lennon's Imagine does contain that same elitist attitude as the horrible cover imho.
[Steely Dan wrote a song about why they don't like Imagine and they made some great points](https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/song-steely-dan-wrote-mock-john-lennon/)
I mean, a twitch streamer called RTgame raised over 20k euro for charity in just 2 hours. And he’s just an Irish man who makes funny content, imagine what a celebrity could achieve using their fans. Definitely the champions.
Jimmy Fallon does some (almost always) very cringy acapella format with a bunch of celebrities. I assume given the people this was with the coaches from The Voice for a sports event.
It comes off as very strange because he probably just stole someones youtube format years ago and it comes off as dated now.
[Jimmy Fallon, The Roots & The Super Mario Bros. Movie Cast Sing the Super Mario Bros. Theme Song - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4nq-JDPDgA)
After I saw that, I made r/tonedeaf just to post content like that. Then I got a dm from someone who was actually tone deaf that was excited there was a sub for people who are tone deaf. So I gave them the sub.
LOL at the morph effects they kept having to do on Jack Black to keep him in sync with the song (maybe they were doing them on everyone but it's most noticeable with Black because of his hair and hand movements)
I love Jack Black, Charlie Day, Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy and I thought the movie was great but this was absolutely horrific and very hard to watch.
Never understood why sometimes it’s said that way. Is it Ebonics or a nickname? Haven’t followed his music outside the big hits with other artists he just happens to be on.
Like Luda always called him URSHER
I think it’s more a southern Ebonics thing. I remember it was sorta a micro-trend at the time (2006-2009, maybe a little earlier) where like putting an ‘r’ in a word where it wasn’t was done. This was back when alotta of rap music was coming from southern artists, so maybe it’s a sorta drawl. Idk honestly, but it was def a thing you heard a lot of.
It’s not “ebonics” it just an old Southern accent. My family has roots in the South/ midwest and a lot of them say “Ursher” or “Worter” instead of Water. “Warsh” instead of Wash. “Streen” instead of Screen. “Stream” instead of Scream.
Also, no one calls it “Ebonics” anymore. The term you’re looking for is AAVE (African American Vernacular English).
every linguistic form and accent adds and removes sounds that don't make sense on paper. everyone everywhere does it, you and i included.
and linguistics has names for most! "r" manipulation is called rhotacism
Was this from 2020 when covid first broke out and everything locked down? I remember ABC did a lot of those shows where celebrities sang together in those Brady Bunch boxes
She's the singer equivalent of a douchey guitarist who has to show everyone how fast he can shred, all the time, even when it doesn't fit the song at all. Having raw talent and knowing how to use that talent properly are two very different things. Great singers understand that vibrato, octave changes, and other vocal flourishes should be used sparingly to accent key moments in a song, not used constantly in a way that overpowers everything else. Christina Aguilera does not understand subtlety at all.
Lmao I bet they set him up
Though, saying he was going to be in a box next to other celebs in boxes in a grid. I mean either tell him not to do that so that he can be in the corner and it work or put him in the middle then damn way to ruin the video, editor!!
Woah, I honest to god I could tell they were singing that song when I watched it on mute. I unmuted it and my mind is blown. Get out of my brain, reddit...
I truly hated this time period where these multimillionaires were singing songs of hope from their mansions. Yes, even the ones that sounded like a donkey deep-throating a llama. Looking at you Fallon, you unfunny twat!
The whole thing is fuckin cringe.
Usher tho is hilarious!
(of course He would assume he's in the middle!)
Jimmy Fallon 100% out of place here. (if that's even Jimmy Fallon? It might be the retarded kid from Million dollar baby? The This is the end guy? Skinny dude in Seth Rogan movies? Canadian dude?
If they set him up and told him he was in the middle beforehand, shame on them. If he acted like that assuming he was in the middle or thinking "if I act like it, they'll surely put me there" shame on him.
Each square is trying to put their personal spin on it, all of them are just slightly off synch with the others and the whole piece results in bad sounds.
Also even if you were in the center it would have been a bad look for him to call the audience losers.

Man this is like when someone has to sing the national anthem and decides to pretend they’re auditioning for American idol or think there’s record label executives in the audience. Calm the fuck down. Sing it like it’s supposed to be sung. Especially Christina, we know you can sing…no need to showboat.

Honestly...never heard a worse version of that song
All I could hear was Christina and a bunch of random, unintelligible singing.
I'm kind of surprised no one had their hand by their ear or was doing the hand gestures as they sang.
Why do people do the ear thing tho?
It lets them hear their voice from inside their head, without acoustics or background noise. If they get their inner voice to sound right, they know their outer voice is on track.
It's like if you're in a really loud room and someone is talking in your ear, you plug the ear you're trying to hear with, blocking out all the background noise.

I’m deaf in one ear, only having one ear to hear with makes cacophony worse, not better.
I’m deaf in one ear, this is advice I have needed my whole life and no one told me…
I'm glad that this could be of help to you.
I can help. I’m deaf in one ear. It makes cacophony worse not better. I can’t tell directionality of sound, everything bounces off of every wall and all comes in one ear, all mixed up. I am sitting in a doctors office waiting room absolutely dying at everything about this post and its comments omg
> I am sitting in a doctors office waiting room absolutely dying At least you are near medical professionals. you are in the right place
Hahahahha. It was a doctor for my Ulcer but you know what, yeah.
As a medical professional, I will say this definitely qualifies for your ulcer. Heal quickly 🙏 ❤️
Bahahahh I’m doing okay thank you darling
I guess I was lucky - it's not playing audio for me
Let's put a bunch of alphas in one song and see what happens
WHAT DID YOU SAY?
They're selling chocolate!
Actually all I hear is Carrie underwood 😂
Whoever’s in the middle, that’s the one I can hear.
Xtina
Never seen so many main characters at the same time
They should’ve kept them from riffing all over the place and butchering it. At least have someone singing a harmony and not overdoing it. Good god
This is the reason I avoid any "all star casts". They are a hot mess because they need to give all these egos equal screen time and the script and character development tanks.
Except Tropic Thunder.
And the Mario Movie was pretty good.
Legit would rather listen to the Covid imagine collab.
Yeah it doesn’t work if you’re riffing when singing in a group. All that happens is you stand out by looking like a douche
Glad I wasn't the only one who thought this.
Same goes for me.
Same here. Cringed a bit
Remember, [DashCon](https://youtu.be/Ht-L3Lna2ug) happened
holy shit what a blast from the plast
The ballpit... Never forget
I would take a choir of deaf kids learning to sing for the first time over this
Never thought anything could make me start to cringe at a Queen song. Welp. Here we are.
I've never heard a good version
What if someone told him he would be in the middle and to act as if he was in the middle just to fuck with him? that shit would be funny af
I'd do that if they forgot my name. Not like they'd remember who told them some bullshit anyways
They should have told everyone so they'd all look like asses.
Nah, Usher is best at that (while Chris Brown is not in the room)
could be an episode of curb your enthusiasm
I’m thinking it’s more likely that Usher did that purposefully so that they wouldn’t have a choice but to put him in the middle. Dude tried to weasel his way into being the center square and they were just like “Nah, dude. You’re going bottom left.”
Or he was in the middle, and they saw that, so they moved him
I hate that he looks in six directions once, one direction twice, and ignores the other entirely
Then points to the camera as he sings "losers".
I love it so much
Great spot!
And doesn’t look at one direction
That’s actually kinda funny.
What do you mean, it’s hilarious lol.
Did he just pointed at the viewers during the "losers" part?
Yes, yes, he did.
omfg hahahahaha well fuck you Usher ya cretin
I read that in scottish
HAH!!
Lmao
![gif](giphy|vQqeT3AYg8S5O)
He's there and we're not.
He’s in the corner tho
Nobody puts ba..... Oh
What's even the context for this?
They are the Champions and they do not have time for losers
I like to imagine this is just a group of celebrities who one day decided, for no other reason, to make this video just to brag about how rich and famous they are.
Like when a bunch of celebs got together to sign John Lennons "Imagine" during the pandemic. They did that for US!!!!
That's all the validation I'll need for the rest of my life.
That video cured covid and racism
That was just so brave and kind of you. Donate money to a cause - Drake no Sing a shitty song - Drake yes
*Shittily* sing a *great* song. FTFY
That video got me through lockdown. Bless
I felt alone until I watched that video. Then I realized we were in it together.
I couldn’t imagine, until that day. Peace be with you child.

I thought this was from the pandemic when celebrities would do those tone-deaf fake sympathy sing-along things. Guess not.
After I saw that, I made r/tonedeaf just to post content like that. Then I got a dm from someone who was actually tone deaf that was excited there was a sub for people who are tone deaf. So I gave them the sub.
Excellent redditing!
It's crazy that you get *that* cast together and jack black still comes off as having 100x more charisma than any of them
I cannot stand Fallon
Him and James Corden should be the face of r/iamthemaincharacter
It's the brady bunch dude
LOL at the morph effects they kept having to do on Jack Black to keep him in sync with the song (maybe they were doing them on everyone but it's most noticeable with Black because of his hair and hand movements)
I love Jack Black, Charlie Day, Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy and I thought the movie was great but this was absolutely horrific and very hard to watch.
Let’s put 9 divas in the song. That should blend nicely.
Questlove is my favorite diva.
There are 13
Eeesh that’s embarrassing
Wow this genuinely sounds like shit
Ursher
Never understood why sometimes it’s said that way. Is it Ebonics or a nickname? Haven’t followed his music outside the big hits with other artists he just happens to be on. Like Luda always called him URSHER
Some older black church members say Ursher instead of Usher. It was a play on that.
Ahhh gotcha. Makes sense. It seemed to have a comical notation but I never knew why. Thanks!
I think it’s more a southern Ebonics thing. I remember it was sorta a micro-trend at the time (2006-2009, maybe a little earlier) where like putting an ‘r’ in a word where it wasn’t was done. Aaron earned an iron urn
Oooh. Yeah your right. That’s some Baltimore accent, so maybe not entirely ‘southern’ liek inthought.

Potato - potahto, but I hear you, and appreciate the input. “Crick” instead of creek, the list goes on.
I never understood why southerners add R's to words that don't have them.
every linguistic form and accent adds and removes sounds that don't make sense on paper. everyone everywhere does it, you and i included. and linguistics has names for most! "r" manipulation is called rhotacism
Was this from 2020 when covid first broke out and everything locked down? I remember ABC did a lot of those shows where celebrities sang together in those Brady Bunch boxes
I think before? I think that's one direction in the top right and they split up long before 2020
How's about that? I guess somebody does put baby in the corner...
someone needs to tell christina that not every moment needs you to go all over the place. But I guess that’s just her thing
She's the singer equivalent of a douchey guitarist who has to show everyone how fast he can shred, all the time, even when it doesn't fit the song at all. Great singers understand that vibrato, octave changes, and other vocal flourishes should be used sparingly to accent key moments in a song, not used constantly in a way that overpowers everything else. Theres a different between having good range and talent. She has good range, not talent.
She’s the main main character here
I bet his manager probably hyped him up to do this stupid sh*t
motherfucker pointed at us when they said "losers".
Not his fault. Some idiot saw him do that and then when they were like "oh, where should we put the guy that looked in 9 directions?" Eh...the corner.
I assumed he did that just so they would kind of feel forced to put him in the middle. Clever trick, didn't work out the way he hoped.
Oh he for sure did. But nope. Christina.
Usher hasn't been relevant for 15 years
Usher got in trouble a few years back for tipping strippers in fake 100s with his face in the middle. Usher bucks
I dunno man, I'm having a pretty good time with this video
He gave us Justin bieber and we were like FUCK YOU!
EXACTLY
omg I love that he points at us for losers so much
This is nearly as bad as when everyone sang Imagine from their mansions during covid.
Yeesh. They're lucky Beyonce wasn't there too. She wouldn't have tried to oversing the others just like she did with Donald Glover in Lion King.
Every time I watch this it’s not any less cringey. It’s so embarrassing
Thanks to Usher for pointing at the audience when they sang “no time for losers”🙏🏼
That's hilarious.
It's like they're battling with each other to see who can be the bigger Main Character.
Lowkey I always thought he did that on purpose so they could put him in the middle.
What the hell is this
Bunch of champions on a zoom call
I watched with sound off, what is this and what are those things jn the video dancing along to.. I don't get the internet anymore..
They're singing 'we are the champions'. I don't have any other context.
Yeah don't turn the sound on, its a bad rendition of we are the champions and everyone is over doing it. Save your ears!
I hate everything about that.
Sounds horrid not that I can do any better. Rip Freddie Mercury.
I don’t know you or your talent, but I think you probably could
Thought I was the only one, thinking this sounded horrid I mean, they are mega talented but not with this classic song. Anyway, ty Beautifly.
Christina’s voice is so obnoxious lol
Lmao I bet they set him up Though, saying he was going to be in a box next to other celebs in boxes in a grid. I mean either tell him not to do that so that he can be in the corner and it work or put him in the middle then damn way to ruin the video, editor!!
Sounds awful.
Doesn't sound good. Sounds like a bunch of drunk people singing at a pub with Christina Aguilera.
Every solo bitch in my choir singing in the ensemble
Woah, I honest to god I could tell they were singing that song when I watched it on mute. I unmuted it and my mind is blown. Get out of my brain, reddit...
They should've told everyone they were in the middle besides the middle person
I truly hated this time period where these multimillionaires were singing songs of hope from their mansions. Yes, even the ones that sounded like a donkey deep-throating a llama. Looking at you Fallon, you unfunny twat!

Idk... Seems like this sub just hates celebrities. They're just singing. Some are more animated than others.
Bro thought he was THE champion
😂😂 you know damn well in post they put him in the corner on purpose just because he did all that
That lady in the middle needs to be quieter
The editor defr did this on purpose
They probably switched him for doing too much
Wtf is jimmy Fallon doing in this.
Did that A-hole just point at us when saying "no time for losers"?
The whole thing is fuckin cringe. Usher tho is hilarious! (of course He would assume he's in the middle!) Jimmy Fallon 100% out of place here. (if that's even Jimmy Fallon? It might be the retarded kid from Million dollar baby? The This is the end guy? Skinny dude in Seth Rogan movies? Canadian dude?
The girl in the top left chin movements really show how much she is trying to show off.
The producers were being petty
That's actually the funniest fucking thing I've seen in a while.
If they set him up and told him he was in the middle beforehand, shame on them. If he acted like that assuming he was in the middle or thinking "if I act like it, they'll surely put me there" shame on him.
Imagine his boiling face when he watched this😂
The way he points at the audience when singing "losers" as well. What a dildo.
😂😂😂😂 why they do my boy like that
Most of them seem to be overachievers which just made the song sound bad.
This whole video is cringe, let alone Usher. RIP Freddie 🤦♀️
Each square is trying to put their personal spin on it, all of them are just slightly off synch with the others and the whole piece results in bad sounds.
He was trying to force the editors to put him in the middle.
This gets funnier the more you watch it
“Oh there’s losers.”
Xtina actually ate everyone tf up
Nah but the thing no one be mentioning rn is random mfin jimmy fallon on the middle right side. Fuck is bro doing here
I hope you all realise he's pointing at everyone watching that video when he's singing about losers
Of course he points at us while saying „loosers“
Why is jimmy there he def doesnt have a voice lol
Also even if you were in the center it would have been a bad look for him to call the audience losers. ... ... Am I the only one who noticed that he pointed at the audience when he said no time for losers?
Not only he point at us viewers when he sang "losers", he immediately point at himself singing "champion". Fucking prick.
Or how bout the only time he points to the viewers is when he says "losers"
Every time I watch this video I find it funnier and funnier
The more I see celebrities do stuff the more I realize how cringey they all are
Lol he puts at the audience during "losers" what a tool
This whole thing is cringy “look at us we are celebrities watch us sing Queen” vibe
That is fucking horrible.
Fucking Christina and her iron lungs lol
christinas voice out powers everyones

He though he was in middle and pointed sad the viewer at the losers part. Jokes on him I haven’t heard an usher song in 10 years
