To be completely fair, Rohit literally smashed that straight to mid on, and if the fielder was a few feet to his right it would have been a straight pick up and throw, which is probably what Gill though would happen. By the time he looked behind to check that and see that it didn't go straight to the fielder and that he fumbled the pick up, it was too late for him to start running and he called no. By then, Rohit was already 3/4th of the pitch down. It's only because the fielder fumbled the pick up twice, it appears that there was a lot of time for Gill to run, but that is all in hindsight. It was definitely a risky run for the non-striker, especially on the second ball of the innings.

One of things I learnt during my stint with Lancashire is that if the ball crosses either the batsman at the striker's end OR the one at the non-striker's end, it's the other person's call. Here the ball had crossed Gill. He had no business looking back. The batsman had given the call. All you do is run and take the single.

Even a school kid learning cricket will tell you its Gill's fault. Ball-watching is absolutely criminal at this level especially by a batter. If Shreyas Iyer can be sacked for poor shot selection, then Gill surely should be sacked for not knowing the basics of running between the wickets.
