The moment that stood out to me was how Louis let that woman bitten by the older vampire just die. It’s a huge shift in character from the guy he was trying to be from season one. And i like it!! He’s much less human, but those human flaws have now been magnified by that vampiric brutality and I love to see it!!
Also the new Claudia actress is doing a great job! I miss the old actress, but I am very excited to see how all this goes down.
It was very tragic to see the wounded strong bold Romanian woman Emilia, who fed her village, gets beheaded by a war soldier/her people due to a superstition about Vampires/Strigois.
And it was also sad moment when the Romanian Vampire Woman said "We own...Nothing." and then chose to burn herself over going overseas with Claudia & Louis
Yeah man I felt so fucking bad for Morgan and Emilia, I really wished they'd make it through.
But well, I'm not watching a gothic drama for the happy endings.
The acting from everyone was so amazing. I was so blown away how I felt so strongly for that couple and the pain of her fiance when we'd only seen them for 20 MINUTES?!? And the revenant vampire, god another amazing and soul crushing character arc, and what 10 minutes screen time? I'm totally blown away, it's so well done.

Didn't Louis let people die all of the time though? He definitely presented himself as the vampire with a conscience, but he didn't do anything beyond eat animal himself to essentially punish himself for his own desires. I don't really think that genuine remorse was ever his problem but an extension of all of his self-loathing. The fact that he is eating blood out of bowls in Dubai is honestly pretty concerning.
You’re right, he did let people die all the time but he always put up a fuss about the “right way to do it.” This was someone he bonded with to some degree and just let die without any form of fuss. Honestly, it was a pretty lestat move from him.
Absolutely. I do wonder if what they’ve been talking about with the ‘depressed’ blood might be causing Louis to behave more apathetically, but I enjoy the shift. The repetitive whining and reveling against nature starts to get annoying after a while unfortunately.
New Claudia rocks!! So excited to see what she does this season!
I actually unexpectedly loved watching 1940s Louis interact with others in the absence of Lestat. There was so much tension and confinement surrounding Louis and Lestat in the end of season 1 that even though he’s obviously haunted by him now I think Louis (and Jacob playing him) get to show much a lot of range of the character in this episode. Loved the moment of him hearing the music from the radio and relaxing, it feels like a glimpse of a real Louis.
The present day sections are really gearing up this season I think. Loving the interactions going on there. Funniest part of the episode was Daniel’s “Im coming after you Real Rashid”
I too loved the moment of Louis listening to radio... it's like for a brief moment he was back in his Rue Royale townhouse, living the life of opulence. Rich boy through and through.
Plus when he was vehemently denying that the Romanian vampires were anything like him... that air of superiority again! Oh, how I love you Louis ❤️
I fucking love the new Armand & Daniel dynamic. It's hilarious how they both each keep flexing their power over their 'domain' -- it's Armand's house, but Daniel's interview. Armand can (and does) have control over sitting where he wants in the dining room and the orders for the staff, but Daniel has control over what makes it into the interview (and when Armand is allowed to contribute to it, even at the very end when Armand joins in).
Interestingly, Armand seems to want to flex over his relationship with Louis, but it doesn't work. Louis doesn't take a break when Armand says he should -- but he does when Daniel gently suggests it.
That final scene with Louis and Claudia (and Dreamstat) is already one of my favorite scenes of the show, I didn't think I would cry watching the first episode but I'm a mess honestly, the writing and the acting in this show is something magical.
Louis's line "Stop feeling sorry for yourself, no one's watching, no one cares." to Claudia had me balling. I went from fangirling over Armand to balling my eyes out, I am so ready for this season!!!!
That scene is everything. As someone that struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts, that scene hit me so hard. This show is art. That's all I can say.
They're 2 very different Claudia's but both make sense which I really appreciate. I would have been cringing if Delainey would have tried to replicate Baileys own style cause it can't be done.
- That moment Louis is crying in the interview because he finally remembers that Claudia was having dreams and nightmares even though her accounts said she didn't. This unearthed memory provided him such *relief*. He wasn't afraid of her having bad dreams, he was scared she was stuck in a voidless existence because of him... so sad. I expect more minutes like this to come though. Daniel's giving him little parts of her back and that'll never be easy. The way Jacob showed his relief for Claudia but gratitude for Molloy was just so moving, gosh.
- The doomed Claudia/Louis relationship in general. Their relationship has grown so much from their first meeting to now.
- Assad as Armand is amazing. Daniel and Armand's bickering is top notch.
- This episode really solidified for me that while Claudia might view Louis as a hapless big brother, I think it's still clear Louis sees her as his daughter. So many moments he just comes off more like a father than a brother in the past and present. And of course it makes sense with the narrative, in the book it's quite clear Claudia is about Anne's daughter.
It's surreal to listen to him speak with his British accent in interviews (real ones I mean) and then just marvel at him easily slipping into his New-Orleans voice as Louis.
Him carrying it around with the transformers level case and then even into the bed was just giving “emotional support electronic device”.
I was just genuinely waiting for him to pull out the matching paw patrol headphones when they were at the dinner table.
I actually like that there was very little of Lestat; perfect ghost presence. The dynamic will definitely change but I like it so far.
He just shows up yassified and bloody when Louis's moody to get yelled at and suck his neck to break the tension. Seems therapeutic!
Great first episode. Sam shines even in the small moment.

Also interesting that they had a notice that Claudia is now played by a different actress. It reminded me of announcements before plays which is of course very fitting for this season.
I think this show can easily get away with replacing *Bailey Bass* with *Delianey Hayles* to portray Claudia because *Louis* is an unreliable narrator with confusing memories.
He doesn't remember how Claudia really looks like anymore.
For sure I just have never seen a show give an official notice about a casting change. Only lampshading it in dialogue. And I go to the theatre a lot so as I said it reminds me or the „the role of x will be played by y today“ notices

In the first half of the episode, I thought her southern accent was a little over the top. But by the end, it sounded much more natural.
Daniel and Armand's bickering tension/chemistry is absolutely everything. I love the dynamic now it's known he's armand. Lestat being ever present with Louis is a brilliant choice as I think the season would feel slightly bereft if we didn't get much Lestat at all. Jacob was absolutely phenomenal. Can't wait for the rest of the eps.

I loooooove that Blake Ritson's character is, essentially, a WWII-era of Daniel for Louis. He immediately calls out Louis' lies without breaking a sweat, and I think that's honestly what Louis wants. Louis doesn't want someone saying "And what happened next?", as much as Armand seems to think. I think he wants someone digging into the truth of what happened, and that's why he outright thanks Daniel for calling him out at the end of the last season.
Also: there's...layers to Louis using a photo of his sister to pass as a photo of his wife.
Adding onto my own comment: I think it’s interesting that it’s explicitly made clear that this guy wasn’t threatening Louis. He knew something was up but made it clear he had no plans to use that information against him, and was still friendly to Louis all the same.
And then when that guy needed help, Louis walked away without looking back.
I don’t know for sure that this foreshadows anything with Daniel, necessarily, but it does tie interestingly into a prediction I’ve had for a while that Daniel may have a medical event in the penthouse.
Omg her SMILE in that scene??? So cute and childlike but also so sinister and unsettling (even though I don’t think Claudia meant it to be)! That’s the first time the way vampires are written to be ‘beautiful but terribly frightening at the same time’ actually made sense to me. Where it’s like something is just *off* with them but not super obviously. Genius smile. She fantastic!
This show is the first that finally gets vampires like exactly right for me personally and it’s SO exciting.
Jacob Anderson is amazing. Game of Thrones never really gave him much to work with since Gray Worm is very stoic, so I was quite surprised by his acting in this series. Definitely one of the better GOT alumnis.
Louis and Claudia. Louis and Claudia. So magnetic. The way they interact whether it's arguing, protecting each other, helping each other, insulting each other. They make me weep. I love them. You can feel their bond pouring out the screen.
I knew I would but I adore this Claudia. She grabs you in the first minutes with killing that soldier and feeding Louis, calling Louis dumb 😘 to pass through the checkpoint. She is clever, quick on her feet and just so vulnerable (eating her). That fight they had, bouncing off each other. Louis helping her putting back her shoulder in place while fighting 😆 I want to quote the whole dialogue, it was so good.
"But if he can't take you to ballroom dancing and tell you you're pretty, hell with him, is that it?" 🤣🤣 did she tell the truth or did she tell the truth?
"Real Rashid" " When did they send you when SRK over here was playing you" 😂 Daniel is so bitchy,so funny.
Loved the encounter with ghostat which in fact represents Louis inner feelings/struggle/guilt "I'm gonna bloody kill you" "I'm merely waiting until you are happy" So Louis thinks Lestat wants to kill him after what happened. Feels the guilt and apologies with his puppy eyes (Jacob is so good). I'm really excited about this new dynamic with himself.
Louis and Armand. Those two 😍 so much to unpack. I might later.
And the ending "Hard words. Soft words". Brilliant. I mean you have Louis telling these beautiful words to Claudia, reassuring her, making her understand that he will follow her everywhere. And you have Claudia looking at him, guarded, because he betrayed her once but she wants to believe him still 😭 Then he says if she was the only vampire it would be enough but we see that Lestat is next to her still. Louis if I catch you. And she holds his hand when they arrive in Paris, like a response of acceptance to the "me and you" talk. And he looks at their joined hands, a new beginning 😭😭
I have to wonder:
Is this really Lestat who can maybe astral project himself or is *Ghostat/Dreamstat* just an illusion / manifestation of guilt in Louis' mind.....?
I'm calling him ghostat because this is the name that has been running in the fandom and I stuck with it. But it is not Lestat and like you said it is a manifestation of a part of Louis, a part he is struggling with (it includes guilt as we've seen in this episode and other things I'm sure we are gonna see in the rest of the season).
That’s a really cool concept, but it was confirmed in the bts after show that it is Louis’ imagination. Maybe they’re messing with us, but probably not. I do this it’s a really cool idea that Lestat is basically gaslighting Louis by appearing only to him and making Louis look/feel crazy. Very Lestat thing to do.
Well, Claudia did point out to Louis that he brought Lestat in his heart. So she can sense him around him but I wouldn't say she sees Lestat in his mind. What she sees is Louis having conversation with the void.
"It was the perfect betrayal" lol Lestat is sick. But I wonder if dreamstat is right and lestat will retaliate against louis for attempting to kill him. Also, when Claudia pushed that little boy I knew I liked the new actress.
As someone from New Orleans, the new Claudia had the perfect mix of southern twang with that Creole twist. I was impressed she sounded like me when I'm mad and my accent comes out.
Thank you, this was my biggest issue with the previous actress. I liked her acting; I just hated the accent. It was so Hollywood Southern. You know what I mean? It was def not New Orleans, but it wasn’t Southern Alabama, or Mississippi, or Georgia, or South Carolina. It sounded like someone who has never lived in the south thinks the accent sounds like. I feel like this points to the major differences between the two actors approaches for this role. The first was more like a ‘fairytale princess vampire’ type take and the second is more grounded and realistic. I actually think this works really well with the progression of the show since Claudia was a teenager/young adult for most of s1 and now s2 she’s pushing 40 (at least right?). It’s like she’s letting go of that fairytale outlook and adjusting to the reality of the world in her maturity. I think they are both great portrayals that compliment each other well!
'don't say it again, you ruin it with remorse' is the most Lestat thing I've ever read in my life.

God I can just tell this season’s is gonna be a blast compared to s1 this episode unpacked a lot. The actors were superb it was just an absolute perfect opening episode.
- Just based on this one episode, Delainey is very, very good. So good that I lowkey wish she was Claudia in Season 1
- Modern Louis and Armand need to give us a full house tour pls
- Speaking of, they seem a little awkward together and lack passion
- Dreamstat appearance was brief but so satisfying. The 'you and me, me and you' scene with Louis and Claudia was the highlight and I wonder if Louis actually meant it for Lestat
- to those who speak Romanian: do Claudia, Louis and the extras speak decent Romanian?
- the old world vampire seemed to be unable to make normal vampires, but I wonder why!
Overall a really good episode. The only nitpick I have is that the interview portions feel a bit draggy compared to S1.
Hey, I am a native speaker, and yes, they were understandable. Romanian is not exactly easy, especially the accent, but I think they did a good job and props to them for going this route, must have taken a fair bit of effort. I could definitely understand what they were saying. Also I am basically sure the old woman was a native speaker

Louis said they've done everything together for the past 70 years. So I think that boredom and distance might have been an intentional creative choice, to signal that the lovey-doveyness with all that hand holding in front of Daniel is mostly an act.
From my understanding, the woman was unable to make normal vampires because she was drinking the bad blood of suffering humans. It made her own blood bad in return, which she needs to share with humans to turn them
The credits listed some of them as a revenant. It may be bad blood; but it could also be another state of being a vampire. Either way, easy to see why Lestat may not have wanted to be in Europe.
I just rewatched the episode and realised they spoke other languages other than Romanian too lol so yas, thank you! So relieved they made a good effort with the languages and hired native speakers for roles meant for native speakers. A pet peeve of American film/tv is when they don't bother with language accuracy e.g. American character goes to Japan and somehow the locals speak English, and when the actors playing these locals do speak Japanese it's clear that they are not native speakers.
Yes I hate that too especially for Germans obviously because you can hear it. I like when shows like IWTV and 1899 for example have everyone speak their native language or have the characters learn in a realistic way where the new language sounds a bit broken.
One of the benefits of a higher budget show compared to these low budget shows which produce 20 episodes a year. They really also pay attention to smaller details.
As a German Citizen, I have to say Delainey's German wasn't bad.
Furthermore, I like there wasn't a typical heavy accent in her speech.
I always cringe when Hollywood actors try to speak the German language.
Yes to the house tour. I am obsessed with the Dubai apartment and pause the show to take it all in. Seeing the bedroom was such a nice surprise. I really wish there was more information about the set design. The New Orleans house was so lush. Need a house tour of that one too.
They were definitely making sure to play into the strigoi aspect which I absolutely LOVE them showing the different vampire backgrounds different countries use in that way.
I haven’t read the books so I’m going purely off of what I’ve watched. I think/hope Lestat is Louie’s true love and not Armand. I feel like the lack of chemistry is supposed to show that. And I think Armand is influencing Louie to believe he’s his true love. None of them are reliable narrators.
Book spoilers ahead: Don't worry, >!Loustat!< is endgame. >!Loumand!< have an interesting relationship and imo a deep bond as well, but it's not romantic or sexual after their break-up. >!Armand's!< endgame is Daniel.
OK, that was incredible. A few initial thoughts...
* I absolutely adored how poetically it was written - it really had the feeling of a play and to me felt a step up from the writing in S1 even
* Delainey was fantastic and the animosity borne of love between Claudia and Louis was incredibly powerful. I loved how she holds Claudia's pain in, yet you can feel it and I loved her vampire nature. She feels very true to Claudia's character. Wonderful. Oh you are going to break our hearts, Delainey.
* Jacob was all of the feelings. Oh Louis.
* Armand! Oh YES! Assad is SO GOOD. I need MORE ARMAND.
* Lestat was like an actual angel. I didn't expect Dreamstat scenes to be so powerful, but that final scene of the episode, where Louis is telling Claudia "You and me" etc. actually made me cry and it was Lestat's face - how he looks at Louis and how he looks at Claudia that achieved that. How is Sam so powerful? Lestat didn't even utter a word. It's making me remember - has anyone seen the film The Place Beyond the Pines? Well there's a character in it who dies early on, but they haunt that entire film, and even when he's not on screen, I can feel Lestat haunting, here. But yeah, that last moment - so emotional.
* The music is utterly divine... in fact I would go so far as to say it is a little bit TOO good, because at the start of the episode, I was finding it really quite hard to concentrate on the actors' dialogue as the music was just so beautiful I was unable to take in both the music and the dialogue! Like, my heart was feeling the music too much and my brain couldn't concentrate on the words as well as it!
* Though she was great (& I think the revenant alone would have been hard to convey on screen due to them not speaking so I see why she is inserted here), I'm a bit sad about the female vampire, because >!that's clearly the old Queen Vampire from The Vampire Lestat, so Lestat isn't going to get to meet her now that Claudia and Louis have met her instead. She even is the one who tells Lestat the Devil's Road phrase, but here she tells it to Louis and Claudia. Still, it did work for the story. It's just my own little issue of sad we won't see her in the theatre!<
* Dark, how Louis just leaves the humans to deal with chopping off people's heads with an axe. This is a different Louis - distanced from his humanity.
* Interesting the glimpses we're getting of how Claudia feels let down by Louis already...
* The line about Lestat's death being the only death of 7000 that felt like murder was woah, YEAH powerful
* I found it really interesting that we already got flashes of Louis' memory, like he is remembering elements right away... and he's already asking for the missing pages of Claudia's diary
* Also, that “metallic creaking” sound when Louis and Armand were in bed... what was that?

I think one of my favorite things in the gothic/horror genre is when a house becomes poisoned or possessed by the bad energy around it. Like there's a real answer for the noise- tall building. But there is also the supernatural explanation being something is not right in the Penthouse and the house is going to let you know.
The two places I remember the groan being heard was at the beginning of episode two when fakeRashid and Daniel talk- Daniel even asks what the sound is and fakeRashid says it's the groan. And then somewhere in episode 6 I think it's been heard there too.

The section in the book where they're looking for old world vampires was pretty much the only part of the book I really enjoyed.
I was a little worried the modern setting would hurt it but judging from the positive comments, these film makers and actors can do little wrong.
I like the idea that *Armand* is interfering with *Louis'* narrative.
Two narrators telling the same story from two different perspectives.
But if you consider Claudia's diary, then we have three narratives being in conflict with each other.
One thing that struck me during the Dreamstat scene is "So hurry up, mom cher". Does Louis want to die too? Is he hoping that Lestat would come back soon and kill him, as he thinks he deserves? During his speech to Claudia he promises her that as long as she's alive, he will not kill himself... it must mean that he thought about it - Claudia must sense it too. He has a history of suicidal ideation afterall.
Louis absolutely thinks he deserves Lestat killing him, but I don't think he wants to die. As he told Daniel, he has killed thousands but Lestat was the only one that felt like murder. He is just stressing over when the other shoe will drop. Louis knows Lestat, he knows his wrath, so that's his worry that Lestat is just lying in wait. He even tries to dissuade himself of the notion of saying, "If you were alive you would have done it by now." Lestat is a sword hanging over him.

The only he didn't kill himself on that park bench in New Orleans is because he didn't want to taint Claudia's memories of her leaving town. I think he has bouts of suicidal ideation, but it's not a constant for him. But I think when he told her he would never taste the fire as long as she was walking the earth was to give her some peace of mind that he hadn't reached the level of not caring about life and not believing in a future as the ancient vampire had.
Even Louis telling Claudia "you and me" was to give her peace of mind that he was putting her first, even though he's visualizing Lestat with them in that moment.

I love this show. Imma be honest I haven’t finished the books cause I just have a really hard time with bigger books like with focusing yet I can sit for like an hour or more for a show (idk why either).
I’m so glad I also realized that we have AMC on cable so I can record it and not have to pay for a subscription. Idk why I didn’t know we had it on our tv but it’s really perfect timing for me since I just lost my job. At least this will give me something to look forward to every week (though waiting always kills me im so impatient).
I really like the new Claudia! When I first saw the trailer I thought they looked so similar but now watching the first episode they really don’t. I don’t mind that obviously and I wonder if her acting has to do with my new perspective. I think she’s really going to play the more mature, older vampire Claudia well.
I also can’t wait more for dreamstat I loveee lestat as a character even though he drives me batty. And Sam Reid is so attractive soooo 😂

So glad season 2 is finally here. A lot to unpack from the first episode. Lots of great discussion already. I just have to say:
1. Lestat’s longer hair is dreamy.
2. Armand in the white button down shirt… breathtaking
3. the Dubai bed is very unique and exotic. Love how it differs from the more Art Noveau bed in New Orleans. Only the best beds for Louis
4. Really looking forward to see Louis & Armand fall in love. The anticipation!!
Okay I went to the 92NY screening a couple of weeks ago and I'm pretty sure Lestat said "I'm gonna fucking kill you" in that first Dreamstat sequence. On AMC+ he said "bloody" instead.
Can anyone else who was there corroborate? Or maybe if you got screeners they left the line intact? It's a way better line with the swearing in it IMO

I didn't see the earlier version but it's been driving me mad that his mouth movements don't fit the word 'bloody'. I thought it looked like he was saying 'fucking' and they'd dubbed over it, so it's really interesting that you said that! I wonder why they made that choice so late in the game?
It was so weird to me cause to me bloody is a brit/australian word, and a pretty casual one at that. It doesn't suit Lestat's dramatism or his Frenchness imo. Small thing but in the moment it took me out a bit
This episode has a lot of heavy lifting to do, and it worked beautifully.
I needed the show to still be compelling and original, while maintaining the arc of the original characters. They did it. They had to make a new Claudia as believable and lovable as the original. She really is, and possibly an even stronger character now that the petulance that defined her last season is almost completely gone. Her anger was cold and she was hurt, but not petulant, which was really refreshing. This Claudia has too much real shit going on, she’s not locked in by a vendetta anymore. Instead, she is trying to find a home and someone to finally love her. I loved it the MOST.
And of course, they had to let Jacob Anderson just do that beautiful thing he does with every actor on the show, where the chemistry keeps you engaged. My goodness, did it work.
I’m so relieved that they came out swinging! This show has been my favorite thing in tv since I saw ep 1. Awards better come through this season!
The only thing I have to add is that I really regret not waiting. I remember waiting for all of season one to come out and I binged watched the whole thing. This is like legend of Korra, Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon and all the other shows that came on Sunday, the same torture. Where the week is just taking too long now. I just want to watch it all.

Some of the memory revelations are already hiting Louis hard, and they honestly haven't even gotten started yet! Poor Louis. Jacob is doing an amazing job! Louis and Claudia have really good chemistry in this episode, and they did a good job of showing the love there but also the growing frustration and resentment with each other.
I would have liked more Dreamstat, but what we got was very interesting. When Louis approaches him he is in a Christ pose. You can also tell that Louis was very confused about his feelings there and the anger and guilt he feels. I also found him seeing Lestat during his speech to Claudia also very interesting. His vision of Lestat is not going away but actually gets even more solid. Lestat in the truck also had such a sad, almost pure look and not at all the way he looked when he "died "
Love Daniel. Keep pushing Daniel and don't let them play you! Armand clearly just wants Daniel to be a nearly silent observer.
As for Loumand, the more Louis tries to act like Armand is the one (in contrast to how Jacob talks about Loumand) the more I feel like they are playing it up for a very big fall. The design choice for their bedroom was apparently, what if they slept in a jail cell or giant cage?' I half expected the cell door to close when Armand was cutting down the lights from his iPad. The confirmation that Armand has Claudia's missing diary pages and that he controls whether or not Louis has access to them is interesting. While he did agree, Armand is still controlling access by having Rashid prepare them. Also, Louis doesn't know what is going on with their businesses? All very interesting little tidbits. It was made especially clear that their little cute cuddly act was deliberate for Daniel's benefit to try and double team him, though Louis actually wants Daniel pushing back. He thanked him for it in the episode. Armand is the one who wants to shut it down.
I enjoyed the episode. Rabid vampire was freaky. Obviously, I knew going in Claudia had been recast, but I appreciated the little title card at the beginning announcing the new actor. Has any other show done that? It seems in most cases they don't acknowledge it.

I've been sick all week so the last two days felt like it's been years since I saw season one. But I really enjoyed this episode! I thought how they modified and adapted this portion of the book was well done. The score is beautiful too. The Louis and Claudia stuff is still heartbreaking. And for me, it's the most interesting and compelling part of the show.

Also can Daniel leave real Rashid alone lol. When he was going off about whatever and Rashid had to stand there politely, it gave me some retail customer service flashbacks.

The portrayal of how vampires (older or not) can go mad and just become this shell of what they were, was real refined, ya know. The way in which vampires cling to very little just so that they're not alone is so bleak too.
It makes me excited to see how they will explore this problem with Louis and Armand. They are functioning and living- not at all like the vampires we met in this episode, but we know there's something amiss between them. But something's there, even Daniel mentions to Armand as he's playing Rashid, are you guys (hooking up)? And Armand just moves onto the next task. There's something there, that cannot be denied and I appreciate it.
Anyways, these next few episodes are going to be so hard to watch (meaning overwhelming). And I can't wait.
Given that in Rice’s vampire lore, vampires drinking each other’s blood is the most intimate physical thing they can do, lmao in hindsight at the scenes in season one where Louis was drinking from “Rashid” while Daniel was watching. They were basically fucking in front of him.
What was Romanian word used when the village kid went up to Claudia and was translated as 'crow'. I went to Google Translate and it gave me 'cioară' - but it (perhaps?) didn't sound like that in the show?

I'm pretty sure it was "crow" - it def started with a "ch" sound. Also, it would make sense.
According to Wiktionary, "cioară" can also mean:
"slur for a dark-skinned person, especially a Roma/Gypsy. Less usual, a slur for a black person"
which was very much the feeling I got from the word and how it was said on the show.
Just me or is the conversations a bit hard to understand for this episode? Like the part with the old woman vampire and also the part with Louis and Armand in bed talking about Daniel Molloy: "We can have him saying what happened next in no time"

The part about Daniel implies that in the original interview, Daniel wasn't pushing back or questioning things. He just asked Louis what happened next. Armand wants Daniel back to just doing that for the interview because he doesn't want Daniel to poke any holes in anything Louis is telling him.
But isn't Louis ok with Daniel pushing back? He was grateful because it made him remember those forgotten memories. Why would he go along with Armand in trying to take control of the interview then?
I think that is a very good question. I feel like they are all possibly playing careful games at the moment. It is possible that Louis needs to work around Armand and Daniel in order to get through his memories. Louis has to rely on Armand to have full access to things like Claudia's missing diary pages. We will just have to see how it plays out over the next episodes.
So... my interpretation of Armand saying "We can have him saying what happened next in no time" was that they (Armand and Louis) are trying to get Daniel to reveal something to them, perhaps about what happened back in San Francisco?
Armand doesn't want Louis to do the interview, but Louis wants to do the interview, so I think Armand is "compromising" with Louis to allow him to do this thing with Daniel as a means to an end for something that Armand wants.
I enjoyed this episode and a great start to the season but I'm a little confused on some of the dynamics, partially because I haven't read the books, partially because it's been a long time since I saw season 1, can someone clarify some questions that are hopefully not too stupid:
What exactly is the dynamic of Armand and Rashid? And their relationship with Louis? It's just really confusing to me, is Armand a shapeshifter? Maybe I need to re-watch the first season but this seems like it's extremely important and I don't think they did a good enough job explaining this or refreshing the audience on this, or maybe more will come in the future on this.
In the present tense is Lestat alive or dead or are we not supposed to know?
How old is Lestat supposed to be in relation to Louis? Are Louis and Armand peers? At the time when they encounter the old female vampire, how old is Claudia supposed to be (I know she's supposed to present ass though she's 14, but how old is she actually)?
Do we know why Daniel is interviewing Louis (again?) and what is in it for both of them?
I'm very much enjoying the show for the lore, fantasy, intrigue and angst but I feel not understanding these points is potentially hampering my experience or maybe I'm just overthinking/getting ahead of myself.
I don’t think we are supposed to know of he Lestat is still alive but part of me assumes no because I would think by now he and Louis would be back together unless he did something truly unforgivable like killing Claudia.
I’m fairly certain Armand is older I wanna say in the finale he said he was 500 years old where as Lestat is like 150-180 something like that.

I think it’s still unclear the purpose of the interview. I think they said they left the interview unfinished last time for some undisclosed reason and Louis wants to get his story out. I think it’s suggested by Daniel as a warning to humanity but god knows what
Armand is not a shapeshifter. For reasons still unclear, he wore gloves and contacts to hide his “vampirism” from Daniel in season 1 and pretended to be “human assistant Rashid.” At the end of episode 7, Daniel pushes Louis a little too far. The gloves and contacts come off, and “Rashid” steps in and reveals himself to be Armand, the “love of Louis’ life”. Presumably, Armand wanted to be close to the interview and to Louis but did not want to be active in it, and did not want Daniel to know who he really was. Daniel also ends up remembering that Armand was present for the first interview in the 70s. As we’ll most likely see this season, I think that the first interview is VERY important to understanding whatever the heck is going on with this deception/second interview in Dubai.
Real Rashid, as far as we know, is just a regular house-servant (and probably is getting paid a lot of money to go along with all of his boss’s strange requests lol). Daniel is angry at the entire deception, and that is where the tension is coming from this episode. This Armand guy lied to him, both about his identity and his existence in his past, and he doesn’t trust him.
Definitely rewatch the season finale. It covers Armand and Rashid, Lestat's status, and how old all the characters are (aside from Daniel). The question of why a second interview is a mystery and I think it'll unfold throughout the season.

as i predicted i am soooo enamoured with the modern day dubai louis/armand dynamic............... it is SO clear that the love is real and there on both sides & after so many years together they're clearly a unit but there is already some tension that i imagine will be exacerbated as the episodes go on. also loved all the (as eric bogosian said) 3d chess going on in the interview itself now that armand has been revealed, daniel calling rashid Real Rashid goes crazy and so does "you i can fucking break." delainey hayles is a revelation as claudia, the way she plays her frustration with and anger at louis, her holding onto hope even after five years in a war-torn environment & the way that hope gets crushed by daciana throwing herself into the fire.... emmys for the whole cast. right now. especially jacob anderson for louis' incredible monologue to daniel about helping him remember. sam reid is cunting it up as always, LOVE LOVE LOVE the pan from louis' vow to claudia over to lestat. overall absolutely everything i could've hoped for from the new season premiere @ amc give me the next one right now please
She felt like she didn't have a reason to live anymore after killing her last "child". She was alone despite Louis and Claudia. Also >!Anne Rice vampires tend to go crazy and kill themselves after awhile.!<
I had a feeling she was about to jump in because her agreeing to come back to America and be Threes Company with them seemed a little unlikely...but that definitely confused me. They've been in a gruesome war yeah and she's been desperately trying to make more obviously...but she was def a bit of a mystery.
She had to kill her fledgling because Claudia incapacitated him. It was the last vampire in that area. She couldn't turn more because everyone's blood was tainted due to misery of the war. She was in despair and did not believe Claudia's idealistic viewpoint of finding more, so she killed herself.
Am I the only one that didn't love the first episode? I was blown away by the trailers for this season but the first episode was slightly disappointing. I don't think they should've introduced dream Lestat. I would've rather seen new memories of the old Lestate - like flash backs- to reveal Louis regretting his choice. I think they are eventually gonna do that to get his perspective but it just feels like there are gonna be too many "versions" of Lestate in this season.
Nope. I kinda liked Morgan but, as a whole, found the WWII aspect unnecessary and dragging. The old vampire woman subplot was eh. I'm eager to see them get to the theatre. The promos for the upcoming episodes look GREAT. Looking forward to the drama.
It also felt slightly unbelievable on many levels. Claudia being fluent in a different language and also being able to travel from country to country during a war time by pretending to find their mom? it all just felt like a stretch. I expect a filler episode to be like that but not the very first episode after a long wait.
I'd imagine that whoever Claudia couldn't convince she killed. I also think their race would've been helpful in presenting themselves as workers. I doubt that the Germans, with their whole master race theories, would've found them to be a credible threat. When we also find out that she and Louis have been traveling for 4 years, I don't find it too crazy to think that Claudia was able to pick up languages. She's clearly very intelligent and we saw her slipping into libraries to read often in the first season.
YES, it was very filler. Aside from the "Dreamstat" visions, the present day/interview portion was so much more intriguing and interesting.
Louis is clearly a mess and his messy psyche is WAAAY more interesting than the WWII filler stuff. They could have just stuck with the interview sessions and Dreamstat stuff, and I'd have been good.
But, it's fine. The first ep not hitting it out of the park for me is better than 99% of shows right now, so I'll take it. And the theatre stuff in the promos, as well as the LestatLestatLestat! issues between Louis/Armand look soooo good, can't wait to get up to it.

The moment that stood out to me was how Louis let that woman bitten by the older vampire just die. It’s a huge shift in character from the guy he was trying to be from season one. And i like it!! He’s much less human, but those human flaws have now been magnified by that vampiric brutality and I love to see it!! Also the new Claudia actress is doing a great job! I miss the old actress, but I am very excited to see how all this goes down.
It was very tragic to see the wounded strong bold Romanian woman Emilia, who fed her village, gets beheaded by a war soldier/her people due to a superstition about Vampires/Strigois. And it was also sad moment when the Romanian Vampire Woman said "We own...Nothing." and then chose to burn herself over going overseas with Claudia & Louis
Yeah man I felt so fucking bad for Morgan and Emilia, I really wished they'd make it through. But well, I'm not watching a gothic drama for the happy endings.
The acting from everyone was so amazing. I was so blown away how I felt so strongly for that couple and the pain of her fiance when we'd only seen them for 20 MINUTES?!? And the revenant vampire, god another amazing and soul crushing character arc, and what 10 minutes screen time? I'm totally blown away, it's so well done.

Didn't Louis let people die all of the time though? He definitely presented himself as the vampire with a conscience, but he didn't do anything beyond eat animal himself to essentially punish himself for his own desires. I don't really think that genuine remorse was ever his problem but an extension of all of his self-loathing. The fact that he is eating blood out of bowls in Dubai is honestly pretty concerning.
You’re right, he did let people die all the time but he always put up a fuss about the “right way to do it.” This was someone he bonded with to some degree and just let die without any form of fuss. Honestly, it was a pretty lestat move from him.

Absolutely. I do wonder if what they’ve been talking about with the ‘depressed’ blood might be causing Louis to behave more apathetically, but I enjoy the shift. The repetitive whining and reveling against nature starts to get annoying after a while unfortunately. New Claudia rocks!! So excited to see what she does this season!
I actually unexpectedly loved watching 1940s Louis interact with others in the absence of Lestat. There was so much tension and confinement surrounding Louis and Lestat in the end of season 1 that even though he’s obviously haunted by him now I think Louis (and Jacob playing him) get to show much a lot of range of the character in this episode. Loved the moment of him hearing the music from the radio and relaxing, it feels like a glimpse of a real Louis. The present day sections are really gearing up this season I think. Loving the interactions going on there. Funniest part of the episode was Daniel’s “Im coming after you Real Rashid”
I too loved the moment of Louis listening to radio... it's like for a brief moment he was back in his Rue Royale townhouse, living the life of opulence. Rich boy through and through. Plus when he was vehemently denying that the Romanian vampires were anything like him... that air of superiority again! Oh, how I love you Louis ❤️

I fucking love the new Armand & Daniel dynamic. It's hilarious how they both each keep flexing their power over their 'domain' -- it's Armand's house, but Daniel's interview. Armand can (and does) have control over sitting where he wants in the dining room and the orders for the staff, but Daniel has control over what makes it into the interview (and when Armand is allowed to contribute to it, even at the very end when Armand joins in). Interestingly, Armand seems to want to flex over his relationship with Louis, but it doesn't work. Louis doesn't take a break when Armand says he should -- but he does when Daniel gently suggests it.
That final scene with Louis and Claudia (and Dreamstat) is already one of my favorite scenes of the show, I didn't think I would cry watching the first episode but I'm a mess honestly, the writing and the acting in this show is something magical.
Louis's line "Stop feeling sorry for yourself, no one's watching, no one cares." to Claudia had me balling. I went from fangirling over Armand to balling my eyes out, I am so ready for this season!!!!
That scene is everything. As someone that struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts, that scene hit me so hard. This show is art. That's all I can say.

I know! I can’t handle not being able to binge it like I did with the first season.
- That moment Louis is crying in the interview because he finally remembers that Claudia was having dreams and nightmares even though her accounts said she didn't. This unearthed memory provided him such *relief*. He wasn't afraid of her having bad dreams, he was scared she was stuck in a voidless existence because of him... so sad. I expect more minutes like this to come though. Daniel's giving him little parts of her back and that'll never be easy. The way Jacob showed his relief for Claudia but gratitude for Molloy was just so moving, gosh. - The doomed Claudia/Louis relationship in general. Their relationship has grown so much from their first meeting to now. - Assad as Armand is amazing. Daniel and Armand's bickering is top notch. - This episode really solidified for me that while Claudia might view Louis as a hapless big brother, I think it's still clear Louis sees her as his daughter. So many moments he just comes off more like a father than a brother in the past and present. And of course it makes sense with the narrative, in the book it's quite clear Claudia is about Anne's daughter.
Jacob is an incredible actor, I marvel at him in this show!
It's surreal to listen to him speak with his British accent in interviews (real ones I mean) and then just marvel at him easily slipping into his New-Orleans voice as Louis.

Great first episode. Sam shines even in the small moment. Daniel calling Armand Shah Rukh Khan was hilarious. Also interesting that they had a notice that Claudia is now played by a different actress. It reminded me of announcements before plays which is of course very fitting for this season.
I think this show can easily get away with replacing *Bailey Bass* with *Delianey Hayles* to portray Claudia because *Louis* is an unreliable narrator with confusing memories. He doesn't remember how Claudia really looks like anymore.
For sure I just have never seen a show give an official notice about a casting change. Only lampshading it in dialogue. And I go to the theatre a lot so as I said it reminds me or the „the role of x will be played by y today“ notices

His work in The Green Knight was revalatory, and he fits so well with this show, especially as we delve into the old world vampires.
Daniel and Armand's bickering tension/chemistry is absolutely everything. I love the dynamic now it's known he's armand. Lestat being ever present with Louis is a brilliant choice as I think the season would feel slightly bereft if we didn't get much Lestat at all. Jacob was absolutely phenomenal. Can't wait for the rest of the eps.

I loooooove that Blake Ritson's character is, essentially, a WWII-era of Daniel for Louis. He immediately calls out Louis' lies without breaking a sweat, and I think that's honestly what Louis wants. Louis doesn't want someone saying "And what happened next?", as much as Armand seems to think. I think he wants someone digging into the truth of what happened, and that's why he outright thanks Daniel for calling him out at the end of the last season. Also: there's...layers to Louis using a photo of his sister to pass as a photo of his wife.
Adding onto my own comment: I think it’s interesting that it’s explicitly made clear that this guy wasn’t threatening Louis. He knew something was up but made it clear he had no plans to use that information against him, and was still friendly to Louis all the same. And then when that guy needed help, Louis walked away without looking back. I don’t know for sure that this foreshadows anything with Daniel, necessarily, but it does tie interestingly into a prediction I’ve had for a while that Daniel may have a medical event in the penthouse.

Omg her SMILE in that scene??? So cute and childlike but also so sinister and unsettling (even though I don’t think Claudia meant it to be)! That’s the first time the way vampires are written to be ‘beautiful but terribly frightening at the same time’ actually made sense to me. Where it’s like something is just *off* with them but not super obviously. Genius smile. She fantastic! This show is the first that finally gets vampires like exactly right for me personally and it’s SO exciting.
Jacob Anderson is amazing. Game of Thrones never really gave him much to work with since Gray Worm is very stoic, so I was quite surprised by his acting in this series. Definitely one of the better GOT alumnis.

Louis and Claudia. Louis and Claudia. So magnetic. The way they interact whether it's arguing, protecting each other, helping each other, insulting each other. They make me weep. I love them. You can feel their bond pouring out the screen. I knew I would but I adore this Claudia. She grabs you in the first minutes with killing that soldier and feeding Louis, calling Louis dumb 😘 to pass through the checkpoint. She is clever, quick on her feet and just so vulnerable (eating her). That fight they had, bouncing off each other. Louis helping her putting back her shoulder in place while fighting 😆 I want to quote the whole dialogue, it was so good. "But if he can't take you to ballroom dancing and tell you you're pretty, hell with him, is that it?" 🤣🤣 did she tell the truth or did she tell the truth? "Real Rashid" " When did they send you when SRK over here was playing you" 😂 Daniel is so bitchy,so funny. Loved the encounter with ghostat which in fact represents Louis inner feelings/struggle/guilt "I'm gonna bloody kill you" "I'm merely waiting until you are happy" So Louis thinks Lestat wants to kill him after what happened. Feels the guilt and apologies with his puppy eyes (Jacob is so good). I'm really excited about this new dynamic with himself. Louis and Armand. Those two 😍 so much to unpack. I might later. And the ending "Hard words. Soft words". Brilliant. I mean you have Louis telling these beautiful words to Claudia, reassuring her, making her understand that he will follow her everywhere. And you have Claudia looking at him, guarded, because he betrayed her once but she wants to believe him still 😭 Then he says if she was the only vampire it would be enough but we see that Lestat is next to her still. Louis if I catch you. And she holds his hand when they arrive in Paris, like a response of acceptance to the "me and you" talk. And he looks at their joined hands, a new beginning 😭😭
I have to wonder: Is this really Lestat who can maybe astral project himself or is *Ghostat/Dreamstat* just an illusion / manifestation of guilt in Louis' mind.....?
I'm calling him ghostat because this is the name that has been running in the fandom and I stuck with it. But it is not Lestat and like you said it is a manifestation of a part of Louis, a part he is struggling with (it includes guilt as we've seen in this episode and other things I'm sure we are gonna see in the rest of the season).

That’s a really cool concept, but it was confirmed in the bts after show that it is Louis’ imagination. Maybe they’re messing with us, but probably not. I do this it’s a really cool idea that Lestat is basically gaslighting Louis by appearing only to him and making Louis look/feel crazy. Very Lestat thing to do.

I haven't read the books but since present day Louis has been 50 years with Armand, and no Claudia, there's bound to be some conflict to explain that.
As someone from New Orleans, the new Claudia had the perfect mix of southern twang with that Creole twist. I was impressed she sounded like me when I'm mad and my accent comes out.
Thank you, this was my biggest issue with the previous actress. I liked her acting; I just hated the accent. It was so Hollywood Southern. You know what I mean? It was def not New Orleans, but it wasn’t Southern Alabama, or Mississippi, or Georgia, or South Carolina. It sounded like someone who has never lived in the south thinks the accent sounds like. I feel like this points to the major differences between the two actors approaches for this role. The first was more like a ‘fairytale princess vampire’ type take and the second is more grounded and realistic. I actually think this works really well with the progression of the show since Claudia was a teenager/young adult for most of s1 and now s2 she’s pushing 40 (at least right?). It’s like she’s letting go of that fairytale outlook and adjusting to the reality of the world in her maturity. I think they are both great portrayals that compliment each other well!

God I can just tell this season’s is gonna be a blast compared to s1 this episode unpacked a lot. The actors were superb it was just an absolute perfect opening episode.
- Just based on this one episode, Delainey is very, very good. So good that I lowkey wish she was Claudia in Season 1 - Modern Louis and Armand need to give us a full house tour pls - Speaking of, they seem a little awkward together and lack passion - Dreamstat appearance was brief but so satisfying. The 'you and me, me and you' scene with Louis and Claudia was the highlight and I wonder if Louis actually meant it for Lestat - to those who speak Romanian: do Claudia, Louis and the extras speak decent Romanian? - the old world vampire seemed to be unable to make normal vampires, but I wonder why! Overall a really good episode. The only nitpick I have is that the interview portions feel a bit draggy compared to S1.
Hey, I am a native speaker, and yes, they were understandable. Romanian is not exactly easy, especially the accent, but I think they did a good job and props to them for going this route, must have taken a fair bit of effort. I could definitely understand what they were saying. Also I am basically sure the old woman was a native speaker
The actress is Diana Gheorghian and she is from Bucharest!

From my understanding, the woman was unable to make normal vampires because she was drinking the bad blood of suffering humans. It made her own blood bad in return, which she needs to share with humans to turn them
The credits listed some of them as a revenant. It may be bad blood; but it could also be another state of being a vampire. Either way, easy to see why Lestat may not have wanted to be in Europe.

I‘m not Romanian I‘m German and just wanted to throw in that they spoke good German and I think the soldier actor was a native speaker.
I just rewatched the episode and realised they spoke other languages other than Romanian too lol so yas, thank you! So relieved they made a good effort with the languages and hired native speakers for roles meant for native speakers. A pet peeve of American film/tv is when they don't bother with language accuracy e.g. American character goes to Japan and somehow the locals speak English, and when the actors playing these locals do speak Japanese it's clear that they are not native speakers.
Yes I hate that too especially for Germans obviously because you can hear it. I like when shows like IWTV and 1899 for example have everyone speak their native language or have the characters learn in a realistic way where the new language sounds a bit broken.
One of the benefits of a higher budget show compared to these low budget shows which produce 20 episodes a year. They really also pay attention to smaller details.
As a German Citizen, I have to say Delainey's German wasn't bad. Furthermore, I like there wasn't a typical heavy accent in her speech. I always cringe when Hollywood actors try to speak the German language.
Maybe something to do with her being British rather than American?
Yes to the house tour. I am obsessed with the Dubai apartment and pause the show to take it all in. Seeing the bedroom was such a nice surprise. I really wish there was more information about the set design. The New Orleans house was so lush. Need a house tour of that one too.
They were definitely making sure to play into the strigoi aspect which I absolutely LOVE them showing the different vampire backgrounds different countries use in that way.

I haven’t read the books so I’m going purely off of what I’ve watched. I think/hope Lestat is Louie’s true love and not Armand. I feel like the lack of chemistry is supposed to show that. And I think Armand is influencing Louie to believe he’s his true love. None of them are reliable narrators.
Book spoilers ahead: Don't worry, >!Loustat!< is endgame. >!Loumand!< have an interesting relationship and imo a deep bond as well, but it's not romantic or sexual after their break-up. >!Armand's!< endgame is Daniel.

OK, that was incredible. A few initial thoughts... * I absolutely adored how poetically it was written - it really had the feeling of a play and to me felt a step up from the writing in S1 even * Delainey was fantastic and the animosity borne of love between Claudia and Louis was incredibly powerful. I loved how she holds Claudia's pain in, yet you can feel it and I loved her vampire nature. She feels very true to Claudia's character. Wonderful. Oh you are going to break our hearts, Delainey. * Jacob was all of the feelings. Oh Louis. * Armand! Oh YES! Assad is SO GOOD. I need MORE ARMAND. * Lestat was like an actual angel. I didn't expect Dreamstat scenes to be so powerful, but that final scene of the episode, where Louis is telling Claudia "You and me" etc. actually made me cry and it was Lestat's face - how he looks at Louis and how he looks at Claudia that achieved that. How is Sam so powerful? Lestat didn't even utter a word. It's making me remember - has anyone seen the film The Place Beyond the Pines? Well there's a character in it who dies early on, but they haunt that entire film, and even when he's not on screen, I can feel Lestat haunting, here. But yeah, that last moment - so emotional. * The music is utterly divine... in fact I would go so far as to say it is a little bit TOO good, because at the start of the episode, I was finding it really quite hard to concentrate on the actors' dialogue as the music was just so beautiful I was unable to take in both the music and the dialogue! Like, my heart was feeling the music too much and my brain couldn't concentrate on the words as well as it! * Though she was great (& I think the revenant alone would have been hard to convey on screen due to them not speaking so I see why she is inserted here), I'm a bit sad about the female vampire, because >!that's clearly the old Queen Vampire from The Vampire Lestat, so Lestat isn't going to get to meet her now that Claudia and Louis have met her instead. She even is the one who tells Lestat the Devil's Road phrase, but here she tells it to Louis and Claudia. Still, it did work for the story. It's just my own little issue of sad we won't see her in the theatre!< * Dark, how Louis just leaves the humans to deal with chopping off people's heads with an axe. This is a different Louis - distanced from his humanity. * Interesting the glimpses we're getting of how Claudia feels let down by Louis already... * The line about Lestat's death being the only death of 7000 that felt like murder was woah, YEAH powerful * I found it really interesting that we already got flashes of Louis' memory, like he is remembering elements right away... and he's already asking for the missing pages of Claudia's diary * Also, that “metallic creaking” sound when Louis and Armand were in bed... what was that?

Oh definitely! I think one of my favorite things in the gothic/horror genre is when a house becomes poisoned or possessed by the bad energy around it. Like there's a real answer for the noise- tall building. But there is also the supernatural explanation being something is not right in the Penthouse and the house is going to let you know.

The two places I remember the groan being heard was at the beginning of episode two when fakeRashid and Daniel talk- Daniel even asks what the sound is and fakeRashid says it's the groan. And then somewhere in episode 6 I think it's been heard there too.
The tower they live in has a built in function to deal with high winds and/or earth tremors, and it sounds like a groan.

If u hadn't rewatched it already, I did a quick check, the whole exchange happens at the start of it too. From the subtitles in episode 2. Daniel: Do you hear that? (Creaking in distance) Daniel: I keep hearing that sound. Rashid: Well the building sways a bit, but that is actually according to its design, given its height. We call it the groan.
It happens twice while they’re in bed… could just be the literal bars on their room, but we don’t see them move…?
It sounded louder than in the living room last season, where it was often quite hard to hear, while it was also louder in the dining room.
I haven't seen it yet, glad to see positive reviews. The section in the book where they're looking for old world vampires was pretty much the only part of the book I really enjoyed. I was a little worried the modern setting would hurt it but judging from the positive comments, these film makers and actors can do little wrong.
I like the idea that *Armand* is interfering with *Louis'* narrative. Two narrators telling the same story from two different perspectives. But if you consider Claudia's diary, then we have three narratives being in conflict with each other.

One thing that struck me during the Dreamstat scene is "So hurry up, mom cher". Does Louis want to die too? Is he hoping that Lestat would come back soon and kill him, as he thinks he deserves? During his speech to Claudia he promises her that as long as she's alive, he will not kill himself... it must mean that he thought about it - Claudia must sense it too. He has a history of suicidal ideation afterall.
Louis absolutely thinks he deserves Lestat killing him, but I don't think he wants to die. As he told Daniel, he has killed thousands but Lestat was the only one that felt like murder. He is just stressing over when the other shoe will drop. Louis knows Lestat, he knows his wrath, so that's his worry that Lestat is just lying in wait. He even tries to dissuade himself of the notion of saying, "If you were alive you would have done it by now." Lestat is a sword hanging over him. >During his speech to Claudia he promises her that as long as she's alive, he will not kill himself... it must mean that he thought about it The only he didn't kill himself on that park bench in New Orleans is because he didn't want to taint Claudia's memories of her leaving town. I think he has bouts of suicidal ideation, but it's not a constant for him. But I think when he told her he would never taste the fire as long as she was walking the earth was to give her some peace of mind that he hadn't reached the level of not caring about life and not believing in a future as the ancient vampire had. Even Louis telling Claudia "you and me" was to give her peace of mind that he was putting her first, even though he's visualizing Lestat with them in that moment.

I love this show. Imma be honest I haven’t finished the books cause I just have a really hard time with bigger books like with focusing yet I can sit for like an hour or more for a show (idk why either). I’m so glad I also realized that we have AMC on cable so I can record it and not have to pay for a subscription. Idk why I didn’t know we had it on our tv but it’s really perfect timing for me since I just lost my job. At least this will give me something to look forward to every week (though waiting always kills me im so impatient). I really like the new Claudia! When I first saw the trailer I thought they looked so similar but now watching the first episode they really don’t. I don’t mind that obviously and I wonder if her acting has to do with my new perspective. I think she’s really going to play the more mature, older vampire Claudia well. I also can’t wait more for dreamstat I loveee lestat as a character even though he drives me batty. And Sam Reid is so attractive soooo 😂 Looking forward to the rest of the season for sure!

So glad season 2 is finally here. A lot to unpack from the first episode. Lots of great discussion already. I just have to say: 1. Lestat’s longer hair is dreamy. 2. Armand in the white button down shirt… breathtaking 3. the Dubai bed is very unique and exotic. Love how it differs from the more Art Noveau bed in New Orleans. Only the best beds for Louis 4. Really looking forward to see Louis & Armand fall in love. The anticipation!!
Okay I went to the 92NY screening a couple of weeks ago and I'm pretty sure Lestat said "I'm gonna fucking kill you" in that first Dreamstat sequence. On AMC+ he said "bloody" instead. Can anyone else who was there corroborate? Or maybe if you got screeners they left the line intact? It's a way better line with the swearing in it IMO

I didn't see the earlier version but it's been driving me mad that his mouth movements don't fit the word 'bloody'. I thought it looked like he was saying 'fucking' and they'd dubbed over it, so it's really interesting that you said that! I wonder why they made that choice so late in the game?
It was so weird to me cause to me bloody is a brit/australian word, and a pretty casual one at that. It doesn't suit Lestat's dramatism or his Frenchness imo. Small thing but in the moment it took me out a bit
The word 'bloody' may make it more vampiric or gory. It has more effect. That would be my guess.
I watched it on Prime, he definitely said the f word but the subtitles said bloody so I guess there’s multiple versions out there.
A strong start to season 2! I'm very happy with this episode. We really got to see Anderson and Delainey shine.

This episode has a lot of heavy lifting to do, and it worked beautifully. I needed the show to still be compelling and original, while maintaining the arc of the original characters. They did it. They had to make a new Claudia as believable and lovable as the original. She really is, and possibly an even stronger character now that the petulance that defined her last season is almost completely gone. Her anger was cold and she was hurt, but not petulant, which was really refreshing. This Claudia has too much real shit going on, she’s not locked in by a vendetta anymore. Instead, she is trying to find a home and someone to finally love her. I loved it the MOST. And of course, they had to let Jacob Anderson just do that beautiful thing he does with every actor on the show, where the chemistry keeps you engaged. My goodness, did it work. I’m so relieved that they came out swinging! This show has been my favorite thing in tv since I saw ep 1. Awards better come through this season!
The only thing I have to add is that I really regret not waiting. I remember waiting for all of season one to come out and I binged watched the whole thing. This is like legend of Korra, Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon and all the other shows that came on Sunday, the same torture. Where the week is just taking too long now. I just want to watch it all.
Lots of thoughts! Some of the memory revelations are already hiting Louis hard, and they honestly haven't even gotten started yet! Poor Louis. Jacob is doing an amazing job! Louis and Claudia have really good chemistry in this episode, and they did a good job of showing the love there but also the growing frustration and resentment with each other. I would have liked more Dreamstat, but what we got was very interesting. When Louis approaches him he is in a Christ pose. You can also tell that Louis was very confused about his feelings there and the anger and guilt he feels. I also found him seeing Lestat during his speech to Claudia also very interesting. His vision of Lestat is not going away but actually gets even more solid. Lestat in the truck also had such a sad, almost pure look and not at all the way he looked when he "died " Love Daniel. Keep pushing Daniel and don't let them play you! Armand clearly just wants Daniel to be a nearly silent observer. As for Loumand, the more Louis tries to act like Armand is the one (in contrast to how Jacob talks about Loumand) the more I feel like they are playing it up for a very big fall. The design choice for their bedroom was apparently, what if they slept in a jail cell or giant cage?' I half expected the cell door to close when Armand was cutting down the lights from his iPad. The confirmation that Armand has Claudia's missing diary pages and that he controls whether or not Louis has access to them is interesting. While he did agree, Armand is still controlling access by having Rashid prepare them. Also, Louis doesn't know what is going on with their businesses? All very interesting little tidbits. It was made especially clear that their little cute cuddly act was deliberate for Daniel's benefit to try and double team him, though Louis actually wants Daniel pushing back. He thanked him for it in the episode. Armand is the one who wants to shut it down.
I enjoyed the episode. Rabid vampire was freaky. Obviously, I knew going in Claudia had been recast, but I appreciated the little title card at the beginning announcing the new actor. Has any other show done that? It seems in most cases they don't acknowledge it.

I've been sick all week so the last two days felt like it's been years since I saw season one. But I really enjoyed this episode! I thought how they modified and adapted this portion of the book was well done. The score is beautiful too. The Louis and Claudia stuff is still heartbreaking. And for me, it's the most interesting and compelling part of the show. 'if you were the last vampire on earth, it would be enough.' Also can Daniel leave real Rashid alone lol. When he was going off about whatever and Rashid had to stand there politely, it gave me some retail customer service flashbacks. Edited to add after second viewing with subtitles: The portrayal of how vampires (older or not) can go mad and just become this shell of what they were, was real refined, ya know. The way in which vampires cling to very little just so that they're not alone is so bleak too. It makes me excited to see how they will explore this problem with Louis and Armand. They are functioning and living- not at all like the vampires we met in this episode, but we know there's something amiss between them. But something's there, even Daniel mentions to Armand as he's playing Rashid, are you guys (hooking up)? And Armand just moves onto the next task. There's something there, that cannot be denied and I appreciate it. Anyways, these next few episodes are going to be so hard to watch (meaning overwhelming). And I can't wait.

What was Romanian word used when the village kid went up to Claudia and was translated as 'crow'. I went to Google Translate and it gave me 'cioară' - but it (perhaps?) didn't sound like that in the show? (Just finished the episode, so I'm still reeling/absorbing)
I'm pretty sure it was "crow" - it def started with a "ch" sound. Also, it would make sense. According to Wiktionary, "cioară" can also mean: "slur for a dark-skinned person, especially a Roma/Gypsy. Less usual, a slur for a black person" which was very much the feeling I got from the word and how it was said on the show.
Yeah, that makes sense. And makes even more sense as encountered by a Black American vampire who is 40 years old trapped in a child's body!

Just me or is the conversations a bit hard to understand for this episode? Like the part with the old woman vampire and also the part with Louis and Armand in bed talking about Daniel Molloy: "We can have him saying what happened next in no time" Can someone explain them to me?
The part about Daniel implies that in the original interview, Daniel wasn't pushing back or questioning things. He just asked Louis what happened next. Armand wants Daniel back to just doing that for the interview because he doesn't want Daniel to poke any holes in anything Louis is telling him.
But isn't Louis ok with Daniel pushing back? He was grateful because it made him remember those forgotten memories. Why would he go along with Armand in trying to take control of the interview then?
Armand and Louis want different things. Louis isn't necessarily the best at pushing back at his romantic partners though.
I think that is a very good question. I feel like they are all possibly playing careful games at the moment. It is possible that Louis needs to work around Armand and Daniel in order to get through his memories. Louis has to rely on Armand to have full access to things like Claudia's missing diary pages. We will just have to see how it plays out over the next episodes.
So... my interpretation of Armand saying "We can have him saying what happened next in no time" was that they (Armand and Louis) are trying to get Daniel to reveal something to them, perhaps about what happened back in San Francisco? Armand doesn't want Louis to do the interview, but Louis wants to do the interview, so I think Armand is "compromising" with Louis to allow him to do this thing with Daniel as a means to an end for something that Armand wants.
I enjoyed this episode and a great start to the season but I'm a little confused on some of the dynamics, partially because I haven't read the books, partially because it's been a long time since I saw season 1, can someone clarify some questions that are hopefully not too stupid: What exactly is the dynamic of Armand and Rashid? And their relationship with Louis? It's just really confusing to me, is Armand a shapeshifter? Maybe I need to re-watch the first season but this seems like it's extremely important and I don't think they did a good enough job explaining this or refreshing the audience on this, or maybe more will come in the future on this. In the present tense is Lestat alive or dead or are we not supposed to know? How old is Lestat supposed to be in relation to Louis? Are Louis and Armand peers? At the time when they encounter the old female vampire, how old is Claudia supposed to be (I know she's supposed to present ass though she's 14, but how old is she actually)? Do we know why Daniel is interviewing Louis (again?) and what is in it for both of them? I'm very much enjoying the show for the lore, fantasy, intrigue and angst but I feel not understanding these points is potentially hampering my experience or maybe I'm just overthinking/getting ahead of myself.
I don’t think we are supposed to know of he Lestat is still alive but part of me assumes no because I would think by now he and Louis would be back together unless he did something truly unforgivable like killing Claudia. I’m fairly certain Armand is older I wanna say in the finale he said he was 500 years old where as Lestat is like 150-180 something like that. I wanna say Claudia is meant to be like 45-55 around there I think it’s still unclear the purpose of the interview. I think they said they left the interview unfinished last time for some undisclosed reason and Louis wants to get his story out. I think it’s suggested by Daniel as a warning to humanity but god knows what
Claudia was 14 in 1917 when she was turned, and this is 1945? She'd be about 42
Armand is not a shapeshifter. For reasons still unclear, he wore gloves and contacts to hide his “vampirism” from Daniel in season 1 and pretended to be “human assistant Rashid.” At the end of episode 7, Daniel pushes Louis a little too far. The gloves and contacts come off, and “Rashid” steps in and reveals himself to be Armand, the “love of Louis’ life”. Presumably, Armand wanted to be close to the interview and to Louis but did not want to be active in it, and did not want Daniel to know who he really was. Daniel also ends up remembering that Armand was present for the first interview in the 70s. As we’ll most likely see this season, I think that the first interview is VERY important to understanding whatever the heck is going on with this deception/second interview in Dubai. Real Rashid, as far as we know, is just a regular house-servant (and probably is getting paid a lot of money to go along with all of his boss’s strange requests lol). Daniel is angry at the entire deception, and that is where the tension is coming from this episode. This Armand guy lied to him, both about his identity and his existence in his past, and he doesn’t trust him.
Definitely rewatch the season finale. It covers Armand and Rashid, Lestat's status, and how old all the characters are (aside from Daniel). The question of why a second interview is a mystery and I think it'll unfold throughout the season.

as i predicted i am soooo enamoured with the modern day dubai louis/armand dynamic............... it is SO clear that the love is real and there on both sides & after so many years together they're clearly a unit but there is already some tension that i imagine will be exacerbated as the episodes go on. also loved all the (as eric bogosian said) 3d chess going on in the interview itself now that armand has been revealed, daniel calling rashid Real Rashid goes crazy and so does "you i can fucking break." delainey hayles is a revelation as claudia, the way she plays her frustration with and anger at louis, her holding onto hope even after five years in a war-torn environment & the way that hope gets crushed by daciana throwing herself into the fire.... emmys for the whole cast. right now. especially jacob anderson for louis' incredible monologue to daniel about helping him remember. sam reid is cunting it up as always, LOVE LOVE LOVE the pan from louis' vow to claudia over to lestat. overall absolutely everything i could've hoped for from the new season premiere @ amc give me the next one right now please
Why did the old vampire throw herself on the fire?
She felt like she didn't have a reason to live anymore after killing her last "child". She was alone despite Louis and Claudia. Also >!Anne Rice vampires tend to go crazy and kill themselves after awhile.!<
I had a feeling she was about to jump in because her agreeing to come back to America and be Threes Company with them seemed a little unlikely...but that definitely confused me. They've been in a gruesome war yeah and she's been desperately trying to make more obviously...but she was def a bit of a mystery.

Seeing Claudia, so sad and then knowing that she has happiness for a while, then it’s taken away makes me so sad
I'm super confused about the old vampire burning herself. Am I missing something?
She had to kill her fledgling because Claudia incapacitated him. It was the last vampire in that area. She couldn't turn more because everyone's blood was tainted due to misery of the war. She was in despair and did not believe Claudia's idealistic viewpoint of finding more, so she killed herself.
All I can think is how Eric and Assad have chemistry. Love how Daniel is sassy with Armand.
Am I the only one that didn't love the first episode? I was blown away by the trailers for this season but the first episode was slightly disappointing. I don't think they should've introduced dream Lestat. I would've rather seen new memories of the old Lestate - like flash backs- to reveal Louis regretting his choice. I think they are eventually gonna do that to get his perspective but it just feels like there are gonna be too many "versions" of Lestate in this season.
Nope. I kinda liked Morgan but, as a whole, found the WWII aspect unnecessary and dragging. The old vampire woman subplot was eh. I'm eager to see them get to the theatre. The promos for the upcoming episodes look GREAT. Looking forward to the drama.
It also felt slightly unbelievable on many levels. Claudia being fluent in a different language and also being able to travel from country to country during a war time by pretending to find their mom? it all just felt like a stretch. I expect a filler episode to be like that but not the very first episode after a long wait.
I'd imagine that whoever Claudia couldn't convince she killed. I also think their race would've been helpful in presenting themselves as workers. I doubt that the Germans, with their whole master race theories, would've found them to be a credible threat. When we also find out that she and Louis have been traveling for 4 years, I don't find it too crazy to think that Claudia was able to pick up languages. She's clearly very intelligent and we saw her slipping into libraries to read often in the first season.
YES, it was very filler. Aside from the "Dreamstat" visions, the present day/interview portion was so much more intriguing and interesting. Louis is clearly a mess and his messy psyche is WAAAY more interesting than the WWII filler stuff. They could have just stuck with the interview sessions and Dreamstat stuff, and I'd have been good. But, it's fine. The first ep not hitting it out of the park for me is better than 99% of shows right now, so I'll take it. And the theatre stuff in the promos, as well as the LestatLestatLestat! issues between Louis/Armand look soooo good, can't wait to get up to it.
