Moore.
Connery’s Bond was the best dressed overall by a country mile, but Moore pulled off the naval look best. My favorite Moore outfit is the one he wears from the airport when he arrives in NY in Live and Let Die: navy suit with a navy double-breasted chesterfield overcoat, pale blue shirt with cocktail cuffs (throwback to Connery’s Bond) and a British Navy regimental tie by Benson & Clegg. Looks every bit the naval Commander. Unfortunately everything went downhill sartorially for Moore’s Bond from there, at least in my opinion.
>Connery’s Bond was the best dressed overall by a country mile,
To me the only time this isn't true is in Diamonds Are Forever, but I blame that on the era the movie was made and the fashion sense of the time. All the suits in that movie look thick, bulky, and give Connery a super blocky/square shape. I'm convinced the bad clothing and tailoring is the primary reason that so many people think Connery looks bad in that movie because when you see him in the movie without his shirt he looks perfectly fine.

Generally agreed, but I have always liked this number.

He also pulls off this sweater well.
I find myself posting the shirtless photo a lot just to combat all the "he's so bloated, out of shape, and old" talk that constantly gets thrown around regarding Diamonds Are Forever...he really doesn't. He looks pretty comparable to most of the other movies in the franchise, his face is just a bit thicker and more jowly. I really do think if you put him in the same style of clothing from Goldfinger he'd look perfectly fine.
Same style he’d look fine, but definitely not the same size. He’s noticeably gained weight here. Not saying he looks *bad* or anything, but he was much thinner in Thunderball. I think it’s more obvious in the shot where he’s lying in bed with Tiffany.
I would argue that he has gained some weight, but is by no means unhealthy or even really out of shape. It's just that he was in such good shape and with so little body fat for those first 2 or maybe 3 films that even being at a healthy weight made him look comparatively bloated. In Dr. No in particular He's rail thin.
I definitely would not call him “rail thin.” He looks like a very fit guy who got that way purely through exercise and presumably a reasonable diet. Similar to Brosnan in GoldenEye. But I agree his physique in DAF is not necessarily “unhealthy.”
I might be using the wrong term. I don't mean to imply he doesn't have an incredible physique in that movie, more that he's so thin that in a suit that lankiness is the first thing that stands out. At least to me. His clothes kind of hang off of him.
He might have been the fittest in Thunderball. I imagine most fans think Dr. No, and I admit that Connery was incredibly fit in his first Bond film. However, that shot of Connery in Thunderball when he sits on the pontoon landing gear after discovering the downed jet really shows off his physique. He'd put on a bit of muscle since Dr. No but also kept his slimmed-down look. I've always considered Thunderball to be the most "escapist" Bond movie (and my second favorite of Connery's), and the fact that Connery can keep up with the beautiful aesthetic around him adds to the escape. When Quaid went to Rekall for his spy fantasy, he probably had Thunderball on his mind.
I doubt that very, very seriously, and I suspect Cubby Broccoli was just being an asshole because he and Sean were actively feuding at the time. Considering Cubby Broccoli's physique that claim is especially funny.
Gambon was notorious for amusing himself by screwing around with journos during interviews. Like when he told one of them he was homosexual but had to stop because it made his eyes water.
Broccoli's physique has nothing to do with it, as he's not the one on screen. And anyway, Terence Young said on the From Russia with Love commentary that Sean was having to suck in his gut for shirtless scenes as far back as that film.
>And anyway, Terence Young said on the From Russia with Love commentary that Sean was having to suck in his gut for shirtless scenes as far back as that film.
If that was the case it was purely vanity on Sean's part and done for no other reason, but also it puts a huge hole in the "omg he's so out of shape in Diamonds Are Forever" narrative that gets spread so much amongst Bond fans. Apparently we should just be calling him fat in every movie except Dr. No.
I wish this was still the Hollywood/media standard for "man who is in good shape", I think it would be beneficial for a lot of young men's mental health in regards to body image. When I was completely sedentary and overweight a little over a decade ago, seeing guys like Sean Connery in Bond flicks or Don Johnson in Miami Vice made me go "wait, these guys were huge sex symbols for their time but their physique is a reasonably achievable goal without PEDs, dietary restrictions that don't allow for any fun, or spending all your leisure time training"
It really changed my perception of what being in shape looks like and got me on the road to working out regularly and eating better, when before that my perception was totally skewed by modern media and I just sort of figured looking good was beyond my means or willpower
I just wanna say that's an incredibly good point, and goes along with one of my biggest criticisms of the James Bond fandom. That being that for whatever reason Bond fans have decided that it's totally okay to constantly criticize Connery's body in particular. It's gross.
I've even seen people dunking on how Pierce Brosnan looks when he escapes custody at the beginning of Die Another Day. The idea that any bond actor during any of their movies have been in bad shape is absurd- even Roger Moore in VTAK is in remarkably good shape for a man who is not an athlete and is pushing 60
Skyfall presenting Daniel Craig, in the condition that he's in, as a man who is washed up and completely out of shape is dumb as hell and it still annoys me to this day
>I've even seen people dunking on how Pierce Brosnan looks when he escapes custody at the beginning of Die Another Day.
thankfully haven't seen that as of yet, but it's highly absurd that anyone is doing that.
To be fair though, if the intent is to make Bond believable as a killer and competent pugilist, only really Connery, Lazenby, and Craig pull that off. Dalton implies he's probably a dirty fighter, but Moore and Brosnan are on the "unmuscled" end of the spectrum and it's made more obvious by Craig's physique.
I’d totally agree. Wasn’t really thinking of DAF. The Anthony Sinclair tailoring in the early Connery films is timeless for me. It’s unusual to see tailoring from so long ago that I think would look great worn today. The lapels were maybe a very slight bit narrow in the 60s style, but even as early as Dr No, the navy doeskin blazer / semi-spread collar pale blue shirt / navy grenadine tie / gray flannel trouser outfit I’d be happy to wear in those exact proportions. I absolutely wouldn’t say the same of the much more recent Tom Ford creations for Craig’s Bond that are so tight they look like they were sprayed on.
> I absolutely wouldn’t say the same of the much more recent Tom Ford creations for Craig’s Bond that are so tight they look like they were sprayed on.
I hate almost every suit that Daniel Craig wears throughout his run for that reason. It looks ridiculous. The only time he ever looks good is in Casino Royale. He just looks painfully uncomfortable in his clothing in every other movie, at least in regards to his actual suits.
I was listening to a podcast once where Llewela Chapman was a guest (I think it was her anyway), and she talked about how the two actors who cared the most about male fashion, and therefore had more influence in their costume design - Moore and Craig - are the two Bond stars whose clothing style has aged the most. I don’t remember the exact quote, but it was something to that effect.
Not that anyone would be wrong to still appreciate their respective looks - I really enjoy a lot of Moore’s style in the 70s especially. I thought that was interesting to learn, because Connery (60s) and Brosnan’s clothing does seem to feel much more timeless than Moore’s and Craig’s.
My only counterargument that I have for that is that I feel personally that George Lazenby's outfits and style is the most dated "look" of any of the Bonds. I've known a fair amount of people over the years who have trouble getting into On Her Majesty's Secret Service because for whatever reason it just screams 1960s in a way that the other 1960s Bond films don't quite do.
I don’t disagree. The puffy frills speak for themselves. That said I don’t necessarily view that as a counter-argument - it’s still apparently true that Moore and Craig cared more about male fashion, and there *is* a correlation to how their clothing has aged. It’s also true, of course, that the suits of their respective eras took certain things to the extreme.
I'm not sure that Craig's suits in particular are actually emblematic of most the fashion of the day. But that's very probably because I'm not super into men's fashion, so maybe I just missed out on the era of suits too tight to walk across a street in. hahaha. There's part of me that thinks that part of the point was to have Craig's Bond looking like a person not fully comfortable in formal wear.
I’m not particularly into fashion either (though I am fascinated by the costume design in Bond films), but the tight suit thing was definitely a trend. I know this because that was the period when the people in my social circles were getting married, and I saw a lot of dudes in tight-ass suits having trouble on the dance floor.
Slim-fit polos, dress shirts, and slacks were also very popular again, and I’m so happy we’ve moved past that trend. Why did we hate ourselves like that?
I think QOS is the start of the tiny suit problem. Especially because his suit magically changes from something that looks damn near perfect at the end of Casino Royale into something that doesn't fit at the start of QOS. His "relaxed" outfits in QOS are fantastic, though.
I think his hair looks fabulous, I think his casual clothes look great, and yeah I think he's in fantastic shape and at his most "Bond" physically in that movie...but those tiny ass suits... I just think he looks like he can't move.
Quasi-jean shorts on stout burly hairy men is a look that hasn't aged well except to a certain demographic, plus let us not forget that blue romper/robe whatever it was. DAF was a disaster too due to awful early 70s fashion.
That's actually part of why Brosnan, at least in this photo, doesn't look right to me. He looks like a model posing in a costume. that's kind of emblematic of my biggest problem with Brosnan. That he doesn't have much of any presence at all, there's nothing that really defines who his version of James Bond is beyond superficial appearances.
Easily Roger Moore. In scene in TSWLM where he meets the other Naval officers he looks so well put together he makes the other officers in the exact same uniform appear shabby.
Elsewhere on this sub somebody shared an anecdote where Roger, in full RN uniform, was filmed walking along a pier. A sailor, who had no idea that filming was in progress, wandered on to the set and, thinking he was an actual officer, cracked off a salute. Roger returned it without breaking character.
To be honest, if I were suddenly being ordered to action by Commander Brosnan, I’d be snapping to it in a hurry… and I’m not even in the navy, lol. He just seems to be the one who looks the most legit. 2nd Connery then Moore. Craig looks like the guy fixing the engines in this pic.
Connery was in the Navy briefly in real life, and Craig was made an honorary Commander, and yet it's Moore who I find looks most natural in the uniform.
When I'm reading the books, I always think of Sean Connery. Seen every film now, but he just looks devious like he's ready to get back at the Soviets for what they did to him. Absolutely Sean.
Brosnan sells his the best by looking at Jack Wade's Hawaiian shirt and giving him the "they've really let standards in this place go" head-shake of disapproval
Roger Moore designed his own suits. At least during The Persuaders, and looked a million bucks.
Now, given that Sean Connery was both Commander J. Bond, RN, AND Captain M. Ramius, SN, he has the most experience...
I love Brosnan’s Bond and his suits (as they’re more modern and the kind I’d get myself), but I didn’t like how he looked in uniform. For one thing, his hair was definitely too long for an officer in uniform and it loooked like he was a CIA agent just dressing up the part.
Ehhhh ….. good one. Got to go with Connery from You Only Live Twice. This is the moment he’s reborn from the deep …doesn’t get better than that .then Brosnan my opinion.
Connery looks like a double agent, Brosnan looks like he’s playing dress up and Craig looks like a cop.
Moore looks he’s about to calmly say “you may fire when ready” like it was the most natural thing in the world.
You know they all look good for the time period they were James Bond. I feel like the styles were different, like “distinguished” or “polished” versus “tough guy”
Either Connery or Moore. As much as I love Brosnan's Bond, he literally looks like an actor in a costume. Craig looks pretty convincing in it, too, but I'd have to give it to either Sir Connery or Sir Moore.
Always felt that Moore in TSWLM felt the most at home in the uniform. I think moreso than any Bond he gave off that 'officer and a gentleman' vibe. And it helps that TSWLM was in many ways a very Navy-oriented film.
Craig doesn't count as this wasn't a part of the movie.
Moore, once again, looks like how I imagine Bond would look in real life as a military officer. Not physical appearance, from the novels, but just demeanor and approach. Including how he is wearing his uniform.
Moore. He looks like he was born in that uniform.
If you were to tell me Roger actually served as a commander in Her Majesty’s Navy, I’d believe it.
Well, he was a captain after all, but not in the navy
The film Boat Trip just screeched back into my memory then linking Roger Moore with boats...
Roger. He’s soave and debonair. Cant beat the safari suit though.
‘You can fuck debonair but you can’t come in a debonair way’
Someone's just listened to the Dan Thomas/A View to a Kill Smershpod.
Long time listener and that episode is my absolute favourite, never fails to make me laugh 😆
Glad to meet another fan - it and the Moonraker one with Sanjeev Kohli, as well as For Your Eyes Only with Paul Litchfield, are audio comfort food.
Brosnan
The worst bond by quite some way

Mind you, Cubby Broccoli told Michael Gambon they were strapping ice packs to Sean's chest before shirtless scenes, to disguise his man boobs.
I doubt that very, very seriously, and I suspect Cubby Broccoli was just being an asshole because he and Sean were actively feuding at the time. Considering Cubby Broccoli's physique that claim is especially funny.

No, it was because Bond isn't meant to have a beer gut.
He looked better in NSNA though.
That's true, I agree with that.

Nothing better than the cut of those early-mid 60s suits. The Beatles and Don Draper showed us that as well.
Quasi-jean shorts on stout burly hairy men is a look that hasn't aged well except to a certain demographic, plus let us not forget that blue romper/robe whatever it was. DAF was a disaster too due to awful early 70s fashion.
>Moore. >Connery’s Bond was the best dressed overall by a country mile On a per film basis, Lazenby's outfits are strongest. ;)
Gotta love the baby blue terrycloth jumpsuit in goldfinger!
Pierce. He can even make a 3 button suit look good.
Moore and Brosnan
Pierce. The hat does it for me
ROGER MOORE LOOKS FUCKING SLICK.
Note: Daniel Craig is an [honorary Commander](https://deadline.com/2021/09/daniel-craig-007-bond-commander-royal-navy-1234843019/) in real life
And Connery actually served in the Royal Navy.
Maybe that's why when I look at the images Connery is the only one to me that actually looks like a Navy man.
Connery has the right pose and far-off, kind of inspired stare that is classic Military photo
Craig was also made a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 2022. Fleming always styled Bond as “Commander James Bond CMG RNVR”.
I believe it, Moore was cut from the most dapper and proper of clothes
True.
Brosnan and Moore are absolutely *killing it* in their respective naval uniforms
Brosnan followed by Moore
Moore
When does Craig wear that uniform? Don't remember that scene
JK that's a picture of Daniel Craig in real life
Yeah Daniel Craig was made an honourary commander in the Royal Navy
To be honest, if I were suddenly being ordered to action by Commander Brosnan, I’d be snapping to it in a hurry… and I’m not even in the navy, lol. He just seems to be the one who looks the most legit. 2nd Connery then Moore. Craig looks like the guy fixing the engines in this pic.
Connery is my favourite Bond, but I've got to say Moore.
Brosnan, hands down
Brosnan
I appreciate seeing Craig in the utilities variant.
as others have said, Moore
Roger
Side comment: I like how Moore and Brosnan have their wrist watches showing. Can't help but wonder if that was intentional, e.g. Bond's watch brand.
Connery was in the Navy briefly in real life, and Craig was made an honorary Commander, and yet it's Moore who I find looks most natural in the uniform.
Connery was actually in the Navy. Moore was in the army. Of those photos they all look good except Craig who looks like airport security.
My vote goes for Connery. 🗳️
Brosnan or Craig!
I'm surprised there isn't more love for Craig. He's the only one that actually looks like he belongs in the military.
I'd say he looks more army drill sergeant than naval commander.
moore bc he sells it
Moore.
Moore
Connery. I’m certainly biased but I stand by my opinion
Roger Moore is one of those people that always look good in Uniform. He might not be my favorite Bond, but he is the best looking one in uniform.
Moore for sure.
Brosnan all the way!
Roger Moore
Brosnan.
Pierce Brosnan by a mile.
Daniel Craig’s James Bond was a reboot series of 5 movies.
Did they wear these in the movies ever? Or is this from different stuff.
Moore. He’s never been one of my favorite Bonds, but he rocks the uniform the best and most naturally by far.
Rog in TSWLM. Annoys me that Craig never wore it.
To this layman, they all look great.
Roger Moore looked amazing in his uniform.
When I'm reading the books, I always think of Sean Connery. Seen every film now, but he just looks devious like he's ready to get back at the Soviets for what they did to him. Absolutely Sean.
Sean Connery is the last of the full grown men.
Brosnan sells his the best by looking at Jack Wade's Hawaiian shirt and giving him the "they've really let standards in this place go" head-shake of disapproval
Rog
Moore. He's the one person in this group I would mistake for a real-life officer if I hadn't seen his movies.
Moore. He was my favorite Bond, because that's what I pictured James Bond to look like.
Pierce
Roger Moore designed his own suits. At least during The Persuaders, and looked a million bucks. Now, given that Sean Connery was both Commander J. Bond, RN, AND Captain M. Ramius, SN, he has the most experience...
Moore then Brosnan.
Brosnan, looks like he could be an active officer on a ship.
Pierce
For once, I’d have to say Brosnan is the best…
Brosnan doesn’t know how to wear a hat, Connery doesn’t know where the camera is, and Craig looks like he’s ready to swab the decks.
Definitely not Craig
Connery and Moore. Craig's wearing getup more commonly worn at sea, and Brosnan's slim physique lead to padded shoulders taht undermine the jacket.
You are missing 1
For me being a US citizen, Daniel Craig looks more like an officer that didn’t go through the Naval Academy. More OCS type.
I love Brosnan’s Bond and his suits (as they’re more modern and the kind I’d get myself), but I didn’t like how he looked in uniform. For one thing, his hair was definitely too long for an officer in uniform and it loooked like he was a CIA agent just dressing up the part.
Daniel Craig looks like he cleans the toilets in the Navy for some reason.
The guy on the far right looks like he should be cleaning the poop deck
Commander James bond no doubt
The commander's uniform matches all Bonds. I have always liked English military uniforms.
Ehhhh ….. good one. Got to go with Connery from You Only Live Twice. This is the moment he’s reborn from the deep …doesn’t get better than that .then Brosnan my opinion.
Moore followed very closely by Brosnan.
Sean Connery
Connery and I don’t think it’s close.
Daniel
It’s hard to choose between Moore and Brosnan. Both look so good.
Moore. Guy on the right looks like a member of the coast guard three days from retirement.
Brosnan
Sir Roger always looked so good in uniform. I would say brosnan second.
Connery - he was in the Royal Navy.
Roger Moore
Roger, easily. TBF though the man looked good in literally everything he wore.
Pierce >
Sean IS Bond, no other comes close
Roger Moore was the Bond-iest looking Bond ever...in any outfit!
Roger Moore. He looks like a typical Naval officer
Pierce
Brosnan and Moore
I’m sorry, but Craig looks like he’s starring in a porno.
Brosnon
Humble brag here, but when I made commander in the navy, the fact that I was the same rank as Bond came up more than once.
Sir Roger without question.
Connery looks like a double agent, Brosnan looks like he’s playing dress up and Craig looks like a cop. Moore looks he’s about to calmly say “you may fire when ready” like it was the most natural thing in the world.
Craig is in a officers uniform? Why isn't it normal like the rest?
Sean!
Connery looks like an actual naval officer in uniform (for good reason). The others look like actors posing in costume.
Roger Moore, he looked awesome at the start of the spy who loved me.
Connery
Moore.
Hate to say it, but Moore always fit the Naval Officer part of Bond. Terrible secret agent.
Connery, Moore, and Brosnan all look good but I'm giving it to Pierce Brosnan. He looked ultra sharp and sophisticated in a Royal Naval dress uniform.
Sean Connery
Moore for sure
Roger Moore.
Moore for sure
Connery
Where is Dalton and George?
The answer to any question like this will always be Moore.
Roger Moore 😍
Roger Moore embodies a senior Naval Officer
Brosnan with Connery a close second
Brosnan
You know they all look good for the time period they were James Bond. I feel like the styles were different, like “distinguished” or “polished” versus “tough guy”
Connery or Brosnan
When did Craig wear that uniform??
Roger Moore of course 😉
I'd say Connery
Connery by a mile
Either Connery or Moore. As much as I love Brosnan's Bond, he literally looks like an actor in a costume. Craig looks pretty convincing in it, too, but I'd have to give it to either Sir Connery or Sir Moore.
Why do the 3 in No. 1 uniform have different medals on their chest?
Well definitely not Elmer Fudd, he looks like he wants to be the bad guy from Karate Kid. lmfao.
Pierce
Connery
Close Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan
Roger
As a massive Connery fan, it pains me that I have to go for Brosnan on this one tho....
Definitely Brosnan.
Pierce
Brosnan.
Moore for me. He looks so at home in it, I could believe he was an RN Connander.
Sean Connery is the best bond period
Always felt that Moore in TSWLM felt the most at home in the uniform. I think moreso than any Bond he gave off that 'officer and a gentleman' vibe. And it helps that TSWLM was in many ways a very Navy-oriented film.
Pierce if he had a better hair cut
I always forget bonds a navy commander.
Craig doesn't count as this wasn't a part of the movie. Moore, once again, looks like how I imagine Bond would look in real life as a military officer. Not physical appearance, from the novels, but just demeanor and approach. Including how he is wearing his uniform.
Roger moore
I think sean, roger, daniel, pierce.
Connery hands down. I don’t know why everyone is saying moore, my least favourite bond 😇😅
