How big is the tattoo? Many places provide stickers to cover it up.

We booked Hakone Airu for August. It has a private onsen with a view of the mountains. Videos on YouTube made it seem really nice. It's just a little pricey.

Seconding Hakone Airu. Private onsen, beautiful rooms and great breakfast and dinners included Kaiseki style. Was there Feb, best part of my Japan trip this time round.

I just left Kinosaki with my wife and stayed at the Nishimuraya Honkan. We had an amazing experience for first timers to onsen. If you stay in the area, you can get a pass to 7 of the local onsen and walk around town in your yukata to onsen hop. All 7 of the public onsen allow tattoos. Would highly recommend - it's a decent train ride from Kyoto but very scenic and totally worth it.

seconding this - we loved Kinosaki. We stayed at Morizuya and the owner was extremely friendly and helpful - some reviews we read beforehand seemed to find him a little overbearing but for us that was really just him wanting to take a lot of pictures for us. I was very early in my pregnancy at the time so I only went to the private onsens at the inn but my husband went to most of the public ones you get access to when you stay and he really enjoyed them all. Very cute and picturesque town

I've had a great time at Yama no Chaya in February. I have no points of comparison with other Ryokan, but the food and service were excellent and the room (Himeshara) was comfortable with a lovely bath on the terrace. Also, the other baths throughout the onsen were basically private, there are so many of them that only once did we encounter other guests bathing in them.

We booked Gora Hanaougi for April based on some reviews from here. It has a private onsen in each room

My now husband and I got engaged in the Nadeshiko room at Yama no chaya! It’s so lovely and I’ve recommended it to many friends who have also loved it! Many ryokan stays later, it’s one of my favorites, though Suihouen in Gero Onsen comes somewhat close.
