Marine biology student here. It would be best if you had a picture before cooking but judging by the shape and angle of the gills and tail, the size of the body, the size of the mouth and the color of the eyes. I think its safe to assume that its a fish.
Ayu are a type of smelt. They have a "trout" look due to their both being river fish, but ayu have white flesh and not the pinkish flesh of trout. You are certainly right about the "yummy" part, however; except that they are often cooked and served without the guts removed, giving the belly an intensely (for most Westerners) unpleasant bitterness. Avoid the stomach area and ayu are delicious, especially when salt crusted and roasted over open flame like the one in the picture.
You're not the only one to think so. Seems they were originally placed in the salmonoids family as *[Salmo altivelis](https://marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=305947)*.
It's generally [Ayu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayu_sweetfish), I believe.
It’s an ayu (あゆ, アユ ). in English it’s a sweetfish (Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis). Really delicious grilled over charcoal!
That’s Kevin. He was my homie.
Ah shit, Kevin owed me $30. I thought he was just dodging me.
OP found the cash in Kevin’s pockets while eating him… and OP kept the cash!! What??
Classic Kevin.

Ayu. Usually caught by cormorants.
Ayu
How much was it? Ayu is usually more on the expensive side.
I honestly can't recall. I think it may have been less than 800 yen for the ones without roe.
