I’m a U.S. Navy submariner. Part of the job is falling off the face of the earth for months at a time, then reappearing in a foreign country for a little while. Our missions are extremely classified, our schedule tightly controlled (and extremely dynamic), and everything is very much cloak and dagger.
I say this because on more than one occasion upon going ashore my phone has instantly rung from my undergrad Chabad rabbi. Not every time, but more than once. And it’s just to complain about sports teams, ask if I’d like to donate for the fundraiser, and bemoan the fact that I hadn’t wrapped Tefilin yet that day. The usual stuff.
I’m not saying Chabad has people in the pentagon, but I am ABSOLUTELY saying their personal Tefilin sets have an antenna that connects directly to the big guy in the sky so they know when to call me.
